Cowboy Bebop: Love and the Struggle of Time

The plot of Cowboy Bebop seems kind of simple at the beginning of the anime, a dystopian world from the future, where the main characters must grind working as bounty hunters, searching for wanted criminals to reclaim the reward like in the classic western stories. But since the first episode, one of the main topics of this anime appears, love. Spike and Jet went to an asteroid called Tijuana looking for Asimov Solensan, a fugitive criminal wanted for selling Red Eye, a drug that gives strength and fast reactions when consumed. Spike asks a native spiritual guide where Asimov and his partner (Katerina) is, so the native gives him the information, but also warns him, saying that he will find a woman, and that woman is going to get him killed, to which Spike replies that he was killed by a woman in the past. I think that it was not a reference to Katerine what Laughing Bull (the spiritual guide) said, it was a premonition of what happens during Spike's life. This is what I think the anime is about, the relation between love and the past from each character from the Bebop.

Spike Spiegel

Spike had a couple named Julia, but he abandoned her to assure her safety, due to the links he had with the criminal syndicate. That said, we can see that love wasn’t over, so it chains Spike to his past, living a monotonous life with no true destination. This happens until the end of the story, where Spike decides to face the syndicate by himself, because Julia was killed by that organization, so that way he would avenge her.

Jet Black

Jet’s story shows the embracing of past, even though he had a rough life with betrayals, both in love and at his past job, because he accepts that the relationship with Alyssa was over and his loved job at the Inter-Solar System Police (ISSP) was full of corruption. A symbol of this catharsis is that he throws away the broken watch that Alyssa gave him, meaning that he accepted his past, so he can go on with his future life.

Faye Valentine

The attachment to past that Faye has in the story is different to the other two crew members, because she wasn’t escaping from her past, she was trying to know about it since she was frozen and forgot everything of her memories. She tries to learn about her past by watching some VHS tapes of her childhood, just to realize that her past life, her friends and family, everything was already gone. That’s why she stayed with the Bebop crew, because she already made affection links with Spike, Jet, Ed, and Ein, embracing her long gone past and hoping to have a future with them.

just watched asteroid blues (episode one of cowboy bebop) with my roommate; her first watch, my third or fourth, and it really struck me how good it is at world building. how hopeless everything feels, how deep the sad emptiness that runs through the show really is. spike and jet, eternally broke, unable to make ends meet even when they succeed at a bounty. tijuana, the impoverished asteroid colony as the first location we see in this future world of humans living in space; something that in another show would be triumphantly introduced, a marvel. the villain of the week, bringing his pregnant girlfriend into gunfights. "she can't drink alcohol, she's pregnant!" throughout the episode, it's increasingly clear that katerina is in a hopeless situation; asimov is controlling her, using her, and she feels as though she has to go along with it to get to mars. everything's better on mars, after all. her easygoing conversation with spike at the gas station is crippled the moment asimov is brought up. and then they get caught, and katerina knows there's no hope, and she shoots asimov before he can do any more harm, dying herself. and there's the chilling image of her body, drifting through space in the wreckage of their stolen ship, bloody-eye capsules spilling from her stomach like blood. spike goes back to the ship, and the scene of him and jet from the beginning repeats; nothing's changed. the whole story was pointless. "she wasnt even pregnant," my roommate says. it's sad. it's the world our heroes live in, without a word of exposition.

and then, the next episode, they get a dog, and things get a little brighter :)

Katerina & Asimov foreshadowed Spike & Julia's fate.

Both Katerina and Spike wished to escape the life of crime they led and have a new life elsewhere with their partner.

“Road to the West” played just before Asimov and Katerina died, and again just before Spike went to see Julia.

These two scenes are the only times the song was ever used.

Going west is a references to going towards death and the afterlife.

The scenes are visually linked.

Both Katerina and Spike have the realization that they will never get the “Happily Ever After” they always wanted.

Both Katerina and Spike witnessed the death of their partner.

Both their partners were shot to death.

Both held their dead partner’s body in their arms.

Both Katerina and Spike got slashed across the abdomen which resulted in something red spilling out.

Both Katerina and Spike stories end with a pull out shot of their death scene.

Spike’s face when he realizes he’ll never get to run away with Julia is so sad. The rain drops on his face are arranged to look like tears too.
