So I finally figured out why the 118 dynamic changed into something so perfect after Eddie joined the team. And it's not just because Eddie is such a perfect character.

So you know the traditional Five Man Band trope in narrative storytelling, right?

The Leader = Bobby. I feel like this one is self-explanatory. He's the captain. He's the one everyone looks to for guidance.

The Smart Guy = Hen. I feel like this one is also obvious. She's the resident team genius. She can do complicated math in her head while completely drunk. She went to med school. She's the only one who consistently has a brain.

The Big Guy = Buck. He's the one who gets to do the most of the big moves and rescues. He's also physically big and kind of a idiot sometimes. He's a perfect example of a gentle giant.

The Heart = Chimney. We're renaming this trope from being called The Chick because that's too gendered. The character isn't always a girl, and that's basically what the character's role is in the story. He's canonically the heart of the firehouse. Everyone loves him. He's the glue holding everyone together. Everything fell apart when he left.

So in season 1, the team was missing its Lancer.

The Lancer = Eddie. The lancer is basically a reflection of the leader. Eddie is so similar to Bobby, but in some ways, he's the exact opposite. Bobby saw himself in Eddie. Which is literally what the lancer's role is in the story.

The team wasn't complete without Eddie. Sure, they functioned fine in season 1, but, especially looking back, there was something subtle missing.

And now the Five Man Band is complete.

Buck really wants to grab Tommy's hand. It's like there's an ache in his bones, he wants to feel the weight of it, trace the lines with his thumb. Instead he asks, "hey do you know the etymology of helicopter?" Tommy looks over at him, his nose scrunching up with his smile. "Can't say that I do, Evan." They are standing side by side, he could just reach out and hold on. "Well, you would expect it to be split up into heli and copter right?" Tommy nods, "The thing is it isn't. It's P-T-E-R, like in pterodactyl, which means wing. And helico which means helix," he starts moving his hands around each other in a dance. And suddenly Tommy's hand is wrapped around his, and the ache melts away. "Have I told you that you are adorable yet?"

ok like yes but also no

it is in the same vein of trying to be cutesy and a little flirty, but it is different enough that it doesn't feel as awkward.

because the awkwardness doesn't stem from it being his grandfather's name or just general chemistry issues -- it comes from the fact that clearly tommy feels caught red-handed somehow, the way he acts like eddie and buck have never met upon eddie arriving, so he tries to be a little flirty or funny by saying "just giving evan here the tour". i think one of the key differences is that edmundo happened in private, explicitly meant to be something that was intended to be sexy, and this is just like tommy being awkward while also maybe trying to flirt. and it clearly doesnt bother buck the same way as edmundo bothered eddie. also tommy doesn't know buck the same way that eddie does, he as far as we know, knows that evan buckley has a nickname which is buck, like his name is likely thomas so it wouldnt be weird if someone called him that so it isnt weird to call him evan. because i dont think buck introduces himself as buck buckley cause that sounds ridiculous and will immediately be met with ??? so he probably says evan buckley but everyone calls me buck. like edmundo was out of pocket because eddie never introduces himself like that.

and like eddie definitely caught it, and then immediate was like oh yeah buck :) thats buck:) both communicating to buck that he knows that thats what he wants and to tommy that maybe evan is not it ya know? and maybe has something to do with the only time eddie has called him evan. subconsciously it reminds him of that and can't deal with it.

idk to me its more complex and not a parallel to edmundo but more a direct connection to "because, evan" and commentary on what tommy knows about buck

He can hear how out of breath Buck is, how his voice is fighting to be level headed and clear while he works under pressure. "Don't worry about me, focus on getting Hen and Chim, and finding Bobby," he grimaces, biting his lip as the pain sears through his chest.

"How much does it hurt?"

"Hurts less than being shot-"

"Eddie." his voice is even more insistent now, "Tell me."

"About seven or eight if I don't breathe too hard. Happy now?"

"No. But thanks for answering. I'll get you."

"I know you will. Not like I am going anywhere."

so basically i kept seeing her with 911 related things, and then i got more into the swiftie side of tumblr too and they were also everywhere there, we became mutuals, she sent me their buddie ppt for swiftie ppt night (an immaculate work of art) and then we started chatting in DMs and asks and discovering that we are really fucking similar (one instance of this) and wanted to then send videos of rosa and juni so we exchanged numbers. and then for their birthday i wrote them a fic -- mind you i am oblivious at this point. i then sorta realized that i had a crush in like march or so and hopped on the dating apps again to try to combat it which got me three dates with someone but i was not comfy with them after that. so i deleted the apps again. and i get distracted by some other life stuff including realizinf that i need to fucking quit my job, so i deal with that. (all through out this amelia and i are sending each other asks about kissing each other etc etc) anyway-- July 2nd hits, Amelia is attending the Eras Tour, i'm watching a grainy lives stream as usual, and ms. swift begins to play ivy -- which is a very special song to amelia and i post this, why you ask? because i was crying over the fact that she was getitng to hear it live, and that i was by extension watching that happen through the stream, and that i was singing it with her too. i was down very bad. (still am btw) and then i said this and this

now-- its the end of september, crush night -- the pivotal moment. i reblog this and answer this ask amelia makes polls about dating tumblr mutuals etc etc -- moral of the story: we are dumb!!! Demisexual Eddie is so real to me.

He felt like it was easy to fall in love with Shannon, but he had known her and been friends with her for years by that point. And then wanting his next relationship to be like that as well.

And then he walked away from the obvious meet cute at the end, and he had to know it was a moment straight out of a romcom because that's literally what he watches for fun. Because meeting someone new and dating them isn't what he wants.

Okay! So! Do you remember how last year we were speccing and dreaming hard about Eddie’s trip to texas being his moment to come out? But then what happened made much more sense cause we are clowns? Yeah. I think this might be it. Now I don’t think we will get any glimpses of this trip like last time, this time his trip is about running out of time. He wants time with his mom cause he is realizing that maybe they don’t have as much time as he so generously awarded them. And even if they do have that time he wants to spend some of it with his family. But he also needs time himself. To chip away at some of the loneliness.

So all this to say, I think that this loneliness and pain will come up and how buck is a component of it. Which leads to him talking about his feelings with someone in his family, essentially coming out to them. Because he needs to talk to someone about this. And it’s different kind of talking oof he were to do it with Frank. And he can’t talk to much of his LA support because they see and/or know buck. And he wouldn’t want to put any of them in a situation where they know something like that. And of course his family knows who buck is, they can’t talk to Christopher without hearing about their trips to the zoo or how he helped make cookies for the bake sale. And they have met him a couple times. They know somewhat how entangled buck is in their lives in LA but they don’t know.

Anyway, yeah. We won’t see it on screen but I am always watching eddie and with the nuanced work that Kenny mentioned I am especially paying close attention. And I’m willing to bet there might be a slight shift.
