My little cousin (almost 16 now 🥲) watched season 1 of the legend of korra. Here's her opinions of the characters.

Korra: "beefy mommy"

Mako: "he's like zuko but somehow even worse"

Bolin: "every show needs a comic relief, and bolin is doing a horrible job at it"

Asami: "say what you want but irl she would NOT be attracted to mako in the slightest that guy has pointy eyebrows"

Tenzin: "i was expecting Aang's son to have a better sense of humor"

The airbender kids: "BABIES."

Lin Beifong: "now that's my kind of woman"

Pema: "boring i'm sorry"

Tarrlock: "he's like a slimy salesman so perfect for politics"

Amon: "i was genuinely hoping he'd be some cool spirit villain but he was just a dude who did everything bc he's angry. What's with this universe's villains and them just being random dudes all the time"

Bolin loved Toph- do you think that Mako liked Zuko in the same way?

I actually don't think so!!! Bolin does more hero worshiping; thinking of Toza, Toph, and even Zuko himself. I don't think Mako looks up to anyone that way. He was certainly honored to meet Zuko, but honestly Bolin seemed more excited to meet Zuko than Mako was!!

I think Bolin has this tendency to look up to people, something about being the younger brother and always looking up to his older brother. While Mako has always had this more pessimistic view on life, that you have to rely on yourself... I think when Mako was growing up he didn't have any time to hero worship. He was too busy surviving and trying to shelter his brother.

Also... Even though Bolin's an incredibly talented earthbender, even if you ignore his lavabending ability, he mentions in season three that he has always wished he could metal bend, ever since he heard about Toph. I think he views Toph as being like, the pinnacle of earthbending, like the greatest in the world who has a skill he doesn't.

Mako I don't think has that view of Zuko. Zuko's a skilled firebender, sure, but he objectively isn't more skilled than Mako is. Mako can lightning bend, and he is unbelievable skilled at it. Zuko doesn't have any abilities for Mako to envy the way Toph does for Bolin to envy.

I hope I'm making sense here. I just think Mako doesn't put people up on a pedestal the way Bolin always does

Imagine Bolin as a baby sitter.

He may not be the first choice because of his silliness, but when people see that he is actually responsible (he takes such great care of Pabu, after all), they realize how much fun their kids will have with Bolin.

Bolin does a wonderful job and often remembers back to how Mako took care of him, and uses that experience to make sure that the kids he babysits also have support the way Bolin had, even when living on the streets.

Still, once in a while, he might get a little overwhelmed. Thankfully, he knows who he can call: you!

When you answer, Bolin starts with just a touch of panic in his voice, "Hey! Hi! Sorry but, I could use a little help with these kids and you're the sweetest, most caring person I know. Would you be able to help me out?" Bolin is always relieved whenever you are able to help, and he and the kids have more fun when you're around.

It was no wonder that the kids always asked their parents for you and Bolin to babysit again.

Ik you went into the whole stupid "nonbenders are oppressed" thing in lok in one of the asks I sent you, but it keeps on making me think about how much I wish i got to see mako and bolin's mixed earth kingdom fire nation heritage play a role in the story. Maybe if lok had the themes of atla it could go into how the two are treated differently for Mako looking more fire nation and bolin looking more earth kingdom. I think it'd be interesting if Korra keeps on hearing Amon's followers yell on the streets about how benders oppress everyone but then notice how Bolin gets treated significantly better when he pretends to be a non-bender fire national/lean into his fire nation heritage by ignoring his bending compared to when he is openly an earthbender which directly ties him to his earth kingdom heritage.

right!!! i am literally always saying this. like it’s sooo weird how lok does not understand what it means to be mixed in any meaningful capacity. neither with the kataangs nor with mako and bolin, they’re each just largely tied to the element they bend with no consideration given to the other half of their heritage. bumi doesn’t consider himself an air nomad until he magically gains airbending, despite his father literally being the only air nomad currently in existence. instead of trying to preserve his familial heritage, he completely undermines all of aang and katara’s cultural values and joins the fucking military. kya doesn’t seem to give a shit about air nomad culture either, seeing as she doesn’t even know guru laghima’s name (and he’s the wisest air nomad who ever lived!). despite apparently being an independent free spirit who values her freedom, she seems 100% affiliated with her mother’s heritage, because waterbender. even though the values of community and tradition kind of conflict with her whole “you can’t tie me down” attitude, so. um. and they never once explore how the value of, for example, hunting as an important cultural tradition in the water tribes may conflict with the value of vegetarianism and doing no harm to any living organism. these are interesting tensions that could have been explored!! but instead, tenzin is merely an air nomad who takes after his father both culturally and physically, kya is a waterbender who takes after her mother, and bumi is a…..cosmopolitan, and nobody likes him.

as for mako and bolin, they don’t even get the privilege of being the children of the avatar and the chief of the southern water tribe (i said what i said), so being mixed race in the neocolonial cesspit that is republic city would be bound to cause some tensions. but instead of actually addressing what the ramifications and complex colonial dynamics of inter/multiracial family structures in a postwar society that is nonetheless still struggling to contend with a century’s worth of global imperialism and the lingering trauma of that violence would be, they kind of just….ignore it. yes, mako is a firebender who takes after his fire nation mother, and bolin is an earthbender who takes after his earth kingdom father, and they live in a city that was once earth kingdom land that now functions as a neocolony of the fire nation, but also, the police force are all earthbenders, and there isn’t any sort of lingering racial/colonial tensions in this city whatsoever! you know how mako and bolin were orphaned as children and forced to live on the street and dumpster dive for food and eventually did labor for a gang because they had no other means of survival? are we going to question or implicate the systems that enabled those abject conditions? no, of course not. look at mako fumble two gorgeous, ridiculously privileged girls! look at bolin do the charleston! isn’t republic city FUN???

1. The deciding factor, and there were other things too, but the one that brought them to the breaking point, was that Tenzin needed to have children if there were ever going to be more airbenders, and Lin wanted to be a mother about as much as she wanted to be buried alive. And now she's got two kids? It's a bit of a shock for Tenzin, let's be fair. He's married to someone else, and has children, and he's not unhappy about not being with Lin, but it's a weird feeling, a road not taken feeling, something like, but not really, regret.

2. But whatever mixed and complicated emotions Tenzin feels in regards to Lin's forays into motherhood, he recognizes a potential political ally when he sees one. And he has too few of those to throw one away needlessly. He, of all the Council members, treats Republic City as his home. Air Temple island is right offshore, and the United Republic is part of his father's legacy. Most of the rest of the Council expect to serve out their terms and return home to their respective countries. Tarrlock is the only one who intends to stay, but Tarrlock is slippery as an eel-shark, and anyway, he is two parts smarm, one part corruption, and he has no interest in changing the status quo to improve lives for the poor. Not a man Tenzin can work with. Lin however, Lin he can work with.

3. Technically, Lin isn't officially a mom yet. The official adoption is still about a week away when she has her audience with the Council. They still have to meet in front of a judge and declare that they are a family. Bolin is over the moon excited about it, and Mako is, well Mako has mixed feelings. He can't shake the worry that this is all some kind of trap and everything will change once he and his brother are legally Lin's sons. He knows it doesn't make any sense, but... Lin asked Mako's teacher about that, and she said it's normal, so Lin is mostly ignoring the worry, cautiously trusting that it will fade when nothing actually changes. And nothing does change. They go in front of the judge, the paperwork is filed, they go out to dinner at Mako and Bolin's favorite noodle shop to celebrate, and the next day, Lin signs a paper with their school to officially add Beifong to the boys' names. That's it. They're officially a family.

4. Okay, that's not strictly true. Zuko also shows up a few days later on the boys' day off school with Fire Nation style ginger honey plum cakes, and presents for the three of them, and a mock-stern warning that the boys are his nephews now. Lin pulls him aside later to talk to him about the problems in Republic City, and he promises to talk to Izumi, but it's all he can do not to pinch Lin's cheeks.

5. I just want to give a shout out to Kuvira. It takes a lot of bravery to do what she does next, calling Katara up in the middle of the night (for her, not for Katara) to talk.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Sorry in advance for this one, but to ME Bolin's neverending silliness and good cheer is his way of ignoring/sublimating what must have been an incredibly traumatic childhood. He simply is NOT dealing with it! Everything is fine and he's happy!! Could a depressed person do this???

Mako did the best he could to shelter him when they were growing up, but he was just a kid himself and here's no way Bolin ended up totally mentally unscathed.

Anyway. I made myself sad with this, so here's a nicer headcanon: post-series, Bolin and Korra will occasionally set up scavenger hunts for each other. That just seems like something both of them would be into lol.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

I really like his friendship with Asami! He was there fighting alongside her when her father tried to kill her, and she was there for him during the Nuktuk premier when his mask slipped for a minute and he expressed how lonely and vulnerable he was feeling. Their interactions are just very sweet to me, and I think their personalities mesh really well.

There's also some fanart out there of Bolin and Asami on a friend lunch date and the caption is something like "they're bitching about Varrick" and I LOVE THAT VISION FOR THEM.

Wheee someone's asking me about the rock boyfriends! 😊

1. Who is the better cook?

Bolin. Hands down Bolin. He's canonically a decent if not outright good cook. I can see him really enjoying cooking and food. Probably very excited to have so many ingredients at his disposal. But I imagine he can be a bit of a hoarder with food. He doesn't like throwing food out, even when it goes bad, because it feels like such a waste.. so Wei usually does this for him.

Wei has rich kid disease and grew up with a private chef. Can't cook for shit. Doesn't mean he won't try and make something for Bolin. Bo is touched by the gesture but wishes his boyfriend would stop tripping the fire alarm. He still eats the horrible, burnt foods Wei makes. Even though Wei keeps telling him to stop and he won't be upset if Bolin doesn't.

Eventually I feel like Wei and Bolin start cooking together. Which basically equates to Bolin doing most of the work while Wei stirs and chops stuff.

3. Are they into PDA? Who initiates most?

Oh absolutely! They're probably a very physically affectionate couple. Especially when in company of friend and people they trust because it's like the 1920s and folks weren't exactly nice to them queers at the time.

Bolin probably initiates most of the PDA. He's very affectionate regularly and probably even more so with a partner. He adores his boyfriend and wants everyone in a 5 mile radius to know.

Wei is probably more reserved with his affection. Probably doesn't initiate very outwardly romantic gestures but will often search out physical contact. He will, for example, just lean on Bolin or plop himself into his lap. Bo will linstinctively pet or cuddle or kiss him and that is what Wei is banking on.

4. Their favorite show to watch together?

Honestly, it pains me to say... Nuktuk. Definetly Nuktuk. Not only because it's like the only known tv show in universe.

I feel like it definetly started off with Bo being a goof filled wuth hot air over his show and really, really wanting to show Wei.

Wei ends up enjoying the silliness of it. And they absolutely cuddle and watch it to destress. Yes Wei also likes Bolin being half naked through it.

[And yes, before you ask, they have definetly brought, Nuktuk, hero of the South into the bedroom]

7. Who's clumsier?

It's hard to imagine either of them as clumsy in the conventional sense, due to their hobbies and skills. However, I think Bolin would better fit the term.

While he's very athletic and coordinated I can absolutely see him becoming overly animated and in his own world when excited. He gestures a lot while rambling and waves his hands in the air and forgets to look where he's going. He's definetly spilt many a tea while... spilling tea.
