Fenton's head whipped around when he heard the painfully familiar voice. Next to him, Gyro bristled.

"Shopping," the inventor growled. Fenton instinctively reached for his hand, but Gyro didn't take it. "What are you doing here? Don't you have some kind of personal shopper?"

Mark Beaks waved a hand as he strode down the aisle toward them, dressed in an oversized hoodie and sweatpants. "Yeeeaah, but it's fun to get out every now and then, you know? Mingle with you common class." He smirked, then blinked. "And is that Gizmodork with you? I never thought I'd see you two out and about together."

Fenton opened his mouth to snap back, but Gyro stepped between them, an arm out to keep Fenton behind him. "What do you want, Beaks?"

Afraid of Falling

“I swear Fenton, if you drop me…” Gyro threatened, his grip on the plating of the Gizmosuit tightening as his heart refused to stop beating at 200 some beats per minute. His face flushed, as he felt Fenton adjust his grip, his body being pulled closer. He could feel the cool press of metal against his skin, even through the multiple layers of clothing he wore.

It was a carefully thought out plan. One that had taken root in Gyro’s mind and had spread like a wildfire throughout his psyche when, for once, Gyro was the first to rise that morning. “Fenton…” Gyro whispered into his ear, his beak lightly preening the feathers of his neck as he worked to drag Fenton out of sleep. Fenton groaned in response, his eyes squeezing tighter as he shifted more into Gyro’s gentle touch.

Ferno

“What.” Because here he was, thinking that Gyro could never love him. How long had Fenton watched him from afar? How long had he stood at his side grasping at some thread of hope that Gyro would return his affections? His answer was way too long, so long that the very thought of it seemed more impossible than the grass turning blue and the sky turning green.

He knew better than to push, to continue to question and ask for communication when Gyro was in the midst of panic attacks like this. So he waited. His beak nuzzled into his neck as he waited. And then finally, "Why is everything I do just go wrong?" he asks, his voice slicing through the darkness of their room like a knife. And Fenton can feel his heart break.

“…uh…” Fenton began, voice trailing off as his gaze focused down, Gyro’s hands had absently ceased their rythmetic tapping on the desk and instead, had begun to play with his tail. His index finger poking at it and the dopey little grin that would follow when Fenton’s would shake his tail unconsciously. 

Head Empty

He hadn’t even realized when he began doodling Fenton’s profile in the margins of his latest set of blueprints, his mind unfocused as he struggled to come up with his next great invention. But there he was, well there there was the complete lack of any kind of scientific thought. It was as if a love struck teenage girl had suddenly inhabited his body causing him to draw sketches of not only Fenton’s face, but of hearts around it.

Gyro didn’t get a chance to blink or drop the wrench he had been using to adjust the gizmosuit before the sensors came back to life in the form of propelling forward at a speed he didn’t know was possible. His chest pressed against the suit and his back making contact with the glass of the undersea lab. Fenton’s arms quickly wrapping around his back in an attempt to cushion the impact but only served to bring Gyro closer to him.

"I think you're wrong" Gyro deadpanned in response, "I do not think my arms should be nearing their breaking point when it's supposed to be a half hug" he stated.

Fenton giggled, "You've got the right idea, just a little off on the execution." He let go of Gyro's hands before picking them up in the position they were supposed to be in. "This is where we need to be, how can you go from this position to the last one?" Fenton asked.

Gyro gingerly lifted an arm and spun Fenton, stepping back. "This?"

Fenton nodded, "Good. Let's start from here, now get me to the half hug."

Gyro stepped forward and spun Fenton the opposite direction, Fenton followed Gyro's lead, spinning into the half hug they had been working at.

"There you go Cariño!" Fenton exclaimed proudly, "We did it!"

Gyro smiled at the duck, "What next?"

Fenton chuckled, "Now we move forward together for 3 steps, then back for 2." They moved accordingly, "Now you lift my arms up and spin me to get me back to facing you."

Gyro awkwardly lifted Fenton's arms, his right hand moving to spin him. Fenton followed, slowly spinning as he let one hand go. As the spin concluded Fenton was facing Gyro. Fenton was smiling at Gyro as they came to face each other.

"Perfect!" He cheered and Gyro smiled, letting go of Fenton's hand. "You've made it through everything!"

Gyro's smile fell as he looked to the side, "At a pace of 5 minutes instead of 45 seconds?"

Fenton chuckled, "You'll learn to go faster. You've got the basics down now we just need to speed it up."

Gyro grabbed his arm, "Are you sure I'll be ready for your cousin's wedding? It's two weeks out and I barely know how to do the steps, much less the full dance."

Fenton cupped Gyro's cheeks. "Cariño, you've taught yourself fundamentals of ecology in less than 48 hours before. I know you'll be fine." Fenton insisted.

"That was engineering though!" Gyro replied, "That's all concepts. Dancing is physical and needs repetitive practice and even then you can screw up. Fen, I barely even know what I'm doing. I can tell you it's batata and that I apparently lead. That's it."

"Bachata." Fenton stated, "Ba-cha-ta" he annunciated.

"I don't even know the name of the dance!" Gyro threw his hands up in the air, effectively shrugging Fenton off. "Can't we just bring a really nice gift? I'll put a cast on and we can pretend I broke my foot."

"Prima Isabela did a mean flamenco routine wearing a boot, they don't let you go easily" Fenton reminded him, wincing as he remembered watching her stomp out with a sprained ankle and preform like she was in perfect condition. He also remembered pretending to not notice her putting ice down her boot afterward.

Gyro sat down on the couch in a huff. "I'm gonna embarrass you in front of your family."

Fenton sat next to him, placing a hand on his back, "Nonsense. I know you'll get it. It just takes time." he assured.

Gyro shook his head, "I doubt" was all he said.

Fenton stood, grabbing Gyro's hands, "Come on, let's try again. We'll go slow and then try to speed it up to 2 minutes today. Tomorrow we can shave it down more."

Gyro sighed, standing with Fenton's insistence. "I'm only doing this cause I love you."

Fenton smiled, pressing a kiss to his beak, "You're gonna do great cariño. I'll walk us through it verbally." He moved to put Gyro's hands on his arms. "I appreciate you learning for me." He said softly.

Gyro sighed, a soft grin breaking past his beak, "You don't know what all I'd do for you Fen" He replied.

Fenton smiled up at him, enjoying the gentle smile Gyro gave him. He mentally took a picture of it before coughing. "Alright, let's go from the top. We're going to your right first-"

(Also, do you see things good between Gyro and Gandra- Gandra apologized for knocking him out and for the destruction of his lab, and Gyro forgiving her- in such a relationship? Them friends and getting along in their own way, having grown to understand each other and their backstories?)

Well because the reason fendra is covered in the fucking ooze is because it was teasing that my friend group took too far saying I was silly (derogatory 😢) for liking fenro because Fenton already had a gf in canon. I got harassed so much for it from them that I don’t show them my fenro art anymore (it’s fine they’re cool they just took that one too far for too long). Fendra always felt like a direct attack on my lil faves because of them so I automatically get all defensive whenever I see it and it just makes me upset to be around it too much. So I think the thing is for me as long as the safe space (fenro) is kept intact, then I can let Gandra in. Which is why I think I like platonic fendra like I mentioned, as soon as it’s specified they’re simply friends then I’m immediately cool with it. So yeah anyway! As long as that fenro aspect of it is very much there then I think I’d be fine with gyfendra. It’s a fun dynamic I want to go into sometime.

What are your thoughts on Fenro? (Fenton x Gyro)

Oh boy.

Short answer: Not in my top DuckTales ships, but it's one I've learned to appreciate during my time in the fandom and on my second watch through of the show

Long rambling:

So first off let me just say that even before I started watching DuckTales, I was aware of Fenro. I followed an artist on Twitter who drew occasionally drew DuckTales related stuff and would retweet some things and I think that's where I came across Fenro stuff. I don't think I had any expectations for the ship but when I first watched Beware the B.U.D.D.Y. System! I remember thinking after watching the episode, "Yeah, I don't get it."

And it's not because I dislike either of the characters. In fact there really aren't any characters from DuckTales that make my blood boil or anything, they all have qualities that make them funny, unique, interesting, as well as represent some type of adventure genre that even if they're not one that's not my favorite I can understand why they're someone else's favorite

And yeah, Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera is one of my favorite characters from the show; he's one I found myself relating to a lot. (Seriously, that "I am not your amigo" scene is one that hits close to home and still one of my favorite Fenton moments)

Gyro Gearloose while not my favorite character is still a character I love a lot. He's always a blast to watch and the show surprised with the development they gave him. But I remember first thinking he was too much of a dick to Fenton for that ship to work for me. (I mean seriously, Fenton's office is the bathroom! What the fuck!? At least it's better working conditions than at Amazon, I guess.)

And honestly that thought stuck with me until the episode Astro B.O.Y.D.! where my reaction after that episode was "Okay, now this can happen between the two."

Anyway, I was pretty careful to not be spoiled by anything during my first DuckTales watch through, so I avoided looking up any DuckTales related art and/or fanfiction till after I was done watching the show

So if you read any of my stuff or just follow my page you'll notice that I enjoy the Fendra ship and that Gandra Dee is one of my favorite characters (to be honest, she didn't start off as a character I liked at first she grew on me over time). And like all the other blorbos I loved from DuckTales, after I was done watching the entire show I immediately started looking up any art or stories related to Gandra Dee. To which I discovered she was indeed a character that a number of people in the fandom are not a fan of; and a good portion of those people just so happened to be Fenro shippers

Not to say I am upset that they dislike Gandra nor that I don't understand why. People are entitled to their own opinions and I don't really join fandoms to pick fights. However, anyone who has had a comfort character that was not popular in the fandom knows the pain of searching said character in tags on sites such as tumblr or AO3 and getting a good chunk of hatred towards that blorbo and how it can really dampen your day when you just wanted to look for some nice fluff or something. Unrelated note; another favorite character of mine is Della Duck

Needless to say, seeing anti-Gandra related content from Fenro shippers kinda made me have a strong dislike for the ship for awhile but it's not something I ever held onto because it's not something I want to hold onto because I like all three of those characters. And if you want my honest opinion, even though Fendra is canon I can still see Fenro happening post-canon. Mainly because I headcanon that even though Fenton and Gandra are together, I always see them both having an open relationship. Gandra has never been one to follow societal norms or rules made by the patriarchy and Fenton has a big heart. And I can just see her saying to Fenton "Look if you wanna fuck the offspring of Rusty Venture and the dean from Community that's fine with me."

But hey, if you're not down with the poly-thing that's cool. I am subscribed to the AO3 story Can't You Tell That You've Got Me Wrong by Wacky_Nameless_Inventor_24 which I am enjoying. (But yeah, I only checked out the story because I saw Della and Ganrda were in it and were being the chaotic birds that they are so yeah, I was not disappointed.)

But I do like that story because even though Fenton and Gandra are no longer together, the friendship and chemistry is still there. I just hate coming across Fenro stories that toss Gandra aside, make her no longer friends with Fenton, etc. I just love their relationship, that's all. It's cute how they see the genius in one another, can be critical but not overbearing. And whether they end up together or not in the end, I have no doubt in my mind they'd still have a good friendship with one another. Also, Gandra would be the one who would make sure the duck gets a proper office

Speaking of Gandra, can we talk about the ships she's in that don't involve her and Fenton? Cause frankly, not a big fan of some of those. Her and Steelbeak?! Really? They just worked together, he's too much of a dumbass and she's too much of smartass, I don't think they'd get along. I've seen art of Gandra and Fethry before, which I'm not against, I think it's plausible but I would love to know more about that ship from whoever keeps commissioning art from that one artist. You know who I'm talking about. I mean I think it makes more sense than her being with Steelbeak or heck even that crack ship of Fethry and Steelbeak. No I don't hate Steelbeak, just not a fan of those ships

Anyway instead let me offer some alternatives. First off, why has no one shipped Gandra with Gabby McStabberson!? They're both anti-heroes who occasionally work for evil people because damnit it's hard out there in the real world when you don't have connections with a duck that swims in gold! Plus they're both badasses

Here's a shocker: I think Della and Gandra would make a good pair. They'd love each other's chaotic side. It'd be like Fenro but way more fun.

Anyway, bottom line: I love Fenton, love Gyro, and I enjoy Fenro stuff. And if you're a Gyro/Fenro stan who clicked this post because of the Gyro Gearloose or Fenro tags and read through this post only to see me talk about how it's not my favorite ship as well as throwing a few playful jabs at your favorite blorbo, while also going on a tangent on my favorite blorbo...

But seriously, if Fenro makes you happy. That's good, keep on shipping

It’s not personally my cup of tea. But I can see the argument for them, I can see why people like them. And I definitely feel like their friendship should have been expanded upon more from what we got in Astro B.O.Y.D.! At least, if they’d gotten a little more screen time between that episode and the finale. Maybe if there had actually been a fourth season.

1. The comics, I blame the comics. They were always my favorite dynamic as a kid, and I remember thinking “Huh, Donald seems to have more fun with Gyro than he does with Daisy” so I guess in a sense I’ve shipped them since childhood lol I’m just sad that you can only see their dynamic in the comics though, I was HOPING the reboot would show it but oh well.

2. I mean what haven’t I said about them? I love reading stories about them, their relationship is chaotically adorable, they’ve adopted the other’s nephew(s) as their own, they have a habit of being sassy with each other, they’ve smooched before, shall I continue my list??

3. None whatsoever that’s how perfect they are lol Hmm…I guess after reviewing character flaws, Donro could be a problem. Gyro probably shouldn’t use his boyfriend as his personal guinea pig, and Donald should pay for the inventions Gyro makes for him.

✨ Fenro, yeah I don’t ship them

1. There’s multiple factors: not a fan of the power imbalance (boss/employee relationship), the age difference, some personal gripe I have from stuff Fenton did to Gyro (uploading his blueprints on an online forum, leaving him in the closet), Gyro being a jerk to Fenton. I see too many cons for them to be a thing ffddf

2. I feel like if it wasn’t such a popular pairing, I wouldn’t be AS annoyed with it as I am y’know? At least then I can easily avoid it.

3. Okay, Sikyu trashing on fenro aside, I’ll give them this. A lot of mutuals post some cute ass content of them 👌✨ and you all have my full support even if I don’t like shipping Fenton and Gyro together.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Fenton whispered in the dark, Gyro cuddled next to him. He could still feel the older man shaking from where Fenton’s arms lay wrapped around him under the blankets. Huey and Boyd had fallen asleep sometime ago, the excitement of the day's activities catching up to them leaving them completely wiped and falling asleep almost immediately.

While Huey and Boyd had had a great time exploring the city, Fenton and Gyro had taken it in a different way. Attempted to search for answers while trying very hard not to ruffle feathers of the Tokyolk Police Department. Fenton didn’t have to be a mind reader to know that just being in the city again had left Gyro uncomfortable and skittish, jumping at everything and nothing.

“I don’t…” Gyro tried, eyes squeezing shut, Fenton could feel the way his heart pounded against him. He held him tighter and Gyro let out a shaky breath. “I never planned on coming back here.” He said. And Fenton didn’t need anything more than that, leaning in and closing the miniscule distance between them to press his beak against Gyro’s forehead. The silent message of ‘I’m here’ and ‘I've got you.’ made itself known in that simple kiss.

And they would lay there, Fenton filling the silence with whatever conversation topic had come to mind. Gyro relaxed in his hold, eyes closing and breathing evening out as he commented throughout Fenton’s sentences. He was at peace for the moment. Eyes finally falling close and Fenton smiled, pressing another kiss to the top of Gyro’s head as he whispered a soft “Love you.” before falling asleep himself.

I was expecting this lol. Imma be real with this ask, cause I've never commented much on Fendra.

I liked it when we first met Gandra. I think she's a really cool character that didn't get nearly enough development as she needed. It felt rushed and I wanted more for her.

I feel the exact same way about the ship. It needed more time and development. With Beaks in the Shell, we are expected to just accept their relationship happened behind the scenes and they're super in love. And that may be true, but I WANT TO SEE IT HAPPEN. I feel like the show glossed over the makeup of Gandra double-crossing Fenton in Dangerous Chemistry. It's hard for me to get 100% behind it when I can't see how that would've been resolved.

It's also hard for me to understand Fenton, a character defined by his sense of justice and good morality, to have gotten over that so easily. I just really needed to see it.

With Fenton and Gyro, we at least get to see Gyro's development and attempts to change. I wanted to see that with Gandra too.

ALSO, and honestly I feel like this is the biggest reason, is when the show was still airing and the fandom was popping, I got a lot of hate from Fendra shippers just because I shipped Fenro since before we even met Gandra. I was on board with Fendra and wanted to see where it was going, but because I ALSO shipped Fenro, I was called misogynistic, racist, and homophobic (???) since they assumed anyone who shipped Fenro hated Gandra. I never hated her and I had never spoke ill of the ship, but man, being targeted by people blindly like that really made the ship turn sour for me real quick. And it's a shame really that some very loud bad apples can ruin something for me and others like that.

Anyways, in summary, I don't hate it, I wanted more development, and people on Twitter can be really mean.

I've wanted to distance myself from the ship and unfortunately people who ship it cause I'm afraid of being hurt again. And that's sad, really.

BUT! I do want to eventually draw more of the Hadestown AU, which is Fendra, so there ya go. Thanks for the ask!

(also, as to why I didn't place her in the 70s AU to ship with Fenton: we needed a character who was religious and repressed for our story to work, and to change Gandra to make her fit that role felt like a huge disservice to her character, so we created Natalie instead)
