☕️ + the Scooby Doo fandom in general

Hmm okay so this is a very broad question to me and that really means it's going to recieve a broad answer, especially to me as "Scooby fandom" really has differing levels in my heart etc.

For example with my friends and the smallish community of fellow Scooby fans I've found here on tumblr (the Scooby Dootuals!!!) I really love and like! Everybody is so nice and it's cool that people have various levels of knowledge about different series and iterations. Like I really enjoy that on here Scooby fans (as in, like my friends and people who regularly post scooby) have such differing levels of experience with this huge huge franchise as it makes it so much more interesting. Like we have people out there who have seen almost every episode (or feels like it) and can seemingly remember the smallest of things from them, and then we have people who weren't into Scooby as a child but are exploring it now, and then we've got people (like me) who did like it as a child and kind of know a bit of everything, with huge areas of weakness in Scooby they haven't seen, (for me APNSD, anything more than the premise of 13 Ghosts, the 80s trio minus Boo Brothers, anything past s1 of bcsd, much of the 70s era movies, SD & SD, Guess Who, SDMI details, like the list goes on, people!!! I've only seen a Scooby series in order in its entirety one time in my life and that was SDMI age like 12) while also having a few areas with greater knowledge or familiarity and a few spots where they just know a ton/are constantly rewatching. (Me with Goes Hollywood for sure) anyways I don't really remember where I was going with this but uhhh I like that my buddies and whatnot all know different amounts with many being chill or knowing a little bit of everything so we can still like each others posts and talk about Scooby with there still always being so much more to discover <3. So like basically thoughts on the besties are that besties are cool

However I know anon that by sending this you likely mean "Scooby fandom" as in people outside of this insular little bubble so let's talk about that. I think I'm reluctant to really label this group "Scooby fandom" as for ME PERSONALLY fandom really means a kind of engagement with the work beyond what most general Scooby fans do. Like what I'm trying to say is that this group of "wider Scooby fandom" liked Scooby and watched it as a child and consider themselves a fan of Scooby but they aren't rotating Scooby characters like blorbos in their mind too much. Or if they are, it's generally in the creation of like dark!Scooby aus or the live action Scooby show pitches that blow up on here every time Scooby is a topic of general coversation. I guess for me personally the line between this "Scooby fandom" and my own little bubble of people I'm chill with gets drawn based on what fans want out of Scooby. Like do they love Scooby as it is, or do they want to change the audience to create a new Scooby for themselves. Hm, I'm not really phrasing this right. What I mean is like we're all Scooby fans. If you've ever liked Scooby, at any age, however long ago, you're a Scooby fan, I'm not trying to like, gatekeep Scooby fandom or whatever. I just think that differing groups of fans have different pictures in their head of both what Scooby Doo IS and what they want from it based on their familiarity with it and how long it's been since said fan has watched Scooby.

And that's kind of wherein my frustration with "wider scooby fandom" lies. It's really in the fact that there's thousands upon thousands of these "sleeper fans" (which in my mind is really a better term for it) who awake when I or the popular culture mention Scooby, to share their opinions. And these opinions just frankly drive me up the wall. This is because when confronted with a real life Scooby fan (me) there's generally 3 things they want to talk about: 1) SDMI and how it's the greatest thing since sliced bread 2) Doesn't HBO Velma suck 3) (once they learn I like Scrappy) Scrappy hatred and copious references to his portrayal in the Gunn Movies. Plus MAYBE a bonus 4 of other miscellaneous takes that get on my nerves (stuff like Shaggy always smoking weed, Fred and Daphne splitting up together to have sex, just all sorts of things I do not for the life of me want to talk about).

So I guess my take on the wider scooby fandom is as follows: there are positives like some genuinely funny SD posts once a blue moon, or people to share things like concept art and leaks to much of the content canceled by HBO Max, but the vast vast majority of the time it kind of gets on my nerves because people always want to talk about the same few things (which I feel have been talked to death already or I highly disagree with OR BOTH) and it's just really tiring to deal with. Idk I don't think I'm going to go into it to much more here because this post isn't too coherent to begin with (I'm blaming it on like 70% of this being written before work this morning) but there's so many people out there who think so similarly about Scooby (and SO differently from how I think about it) that it feels like I'm getting talked over constantly whenever I have a discussion about Scooby with someone from this group. And that's just like not fun for me? It's just like for me, Scooby Doo is my number one thing. Like I'll be in different fandoms concurrently or whatever and I don't really read fic for scooby but I will for other stuff etc. But like scooby is always there for me like MY MAIN turned into a scooby doo blog like honestly while that's just not the case for some other people. It's very much a difference in the value and time put into the franchise, (which like you can just like things casually that's not a bad thing) it's just that it's frustrating for me talking to sleeper fans about Scooby because I get trapped (literally, like irl) in the exact same conversation that I don't even want to be having(!!!!!) pretty much all the time.

So…. What do we think a Felix x reader wedding would look like at Saltburn? A grand extravaganza with a million guests or an intimate ceremony with just the Cattons?

Obviously they take every opportunity to throw a party at Saltburn so a wedding is the ultimate bash in the eyes of the Cattons.

Or would Felix just decide to change it entirely and just want it to be a tiny intimate thing since he wants this to feel quiet and special. And then maybe some big party another day to the delight of Elspeth and sir James.

For Felix he’s so laid back and in love all he cares about is his girl and what will make her happy. They are so young and in love i wouldn’t be surprised if he proposed on a lazy Sunday morning or a day reading naked in the field, just because he was so blissfully happy he knew there was nobody he’d rather spend these kind of days with for the rest of his life.

Side notes: Venetia would be maid of honor right? I see Elspeth as the mother in law that makes herself heavenly involved with planning and gives her brutally honest opinion picking out the dress 😅 I can even picture stoic Duncan trying to hold back tears while he’s holding a tissue box to Elspeth or sir James while they read their vows.

i needed a break from writing, so thank you for sending this, my darling! it's always good to refresh the pallet, and this ask really got me thinking!

let's get into it!

kinda-sorta wedding AU HC's

pairing: Felix Catton x female!reader

fandom masterlist: Saltburn

word count: 1.4k+

warnings: suspiciously none

so your question all depends on the Reader, but i'll try to answer best i can.

the Saltburn wedding is definitely a huge, extravagant ordeal. the Cattons are well connected, so, it wouldn't just be Felix and Reader's peers attending, but ALL family from both sides, as well as family friends, too. Reader's family is invited to Saltburn a week before matrimony; where they try to help, but the Cattons have hired 3 different wedding planners to make this the most talked-about event in any social circles.

every room in Saltburn is cleaned and decorated. an abundance of flowers are shipped in to be hung from the ceilings and bannisters. there's BOTH a live band and a DJ, an erected outdoor dance floor.

now, i can see two different things: 1. Felix and Reader marry in the local church and then the reception is hosted at Saltburn. 2. they marry on Saltburn's property and still have the big ass reception on the grounds.

either way, it's most def a summer wedding to utilize optimal weather. it's a reason to wear the best clothes, drink expensive liquor excessively, and indulge in gluttony. it's a night designed to make attendants jealous.

there's well over 300 people, Sir James and Elspeth combing through their address books to send invites even to family friends they haven't spoken to in years. they're the kind of parents that take advantage of their child getting married; it's the best excuse to show off and have a grand celebration, to prove the family doesn't do anything half-assed. if they can throw extravagant parties just for the hell of it, they definitely feel pressure to out-do themselves.

it's like this wedding isn't *for* Felix and Reader, but more so for the Cattons to show up and show out. it's not about a union of two people, but an excuse to gloat and smash their privilege in everyone's face.

Felix eats it up 'cause it's all he knows, the spoilt rich boy, but Reader's a little uncomfortable with the sheer size and details of her wedding. but in the same breath, she's relaxed because she KNOWS this is just how the Cattons operate and she doesn't really have to lift a single finger.

so, Reader lets Elspeth plan her ideal wedding - 'cause there's no way she's not involved. they make some decisions together, it's a bonding experience for Reader and her soon-to-be MIL, but for the most part, it's the matriarch doing most of the heavy lifting.

Felix and Reader only get to decide on wedding colors, catering options, and the cake. and even then, they have to endure his family's opinions.

Reader doesn't even get to 100% choose her dress, hair, and make up. Elspeth basically decides everything. i agree with you and think Mrs. Catton would impose herself even on the wedding dress selection, becoming persnickety, opinionated, and a little snarky when Reader shows off her dresses. this causes tension with Reader's family, who think the older woman far too self-important, and maybe it's Reader's mother or sister that stands up to her and insists Elspeth keep quiet since this *isn't* her wedding and they don't want any influences on Reader. they want Reader to choose her perfect wedding dress without scrutiny since she has no say in anything else.

in fact, maybe - juuuuuust maybe - Reader's family takes her to shop for a wedding dress without Elspeth in an effort to dial down the stress. it's not meant maliciously, but Elspeth simply cannot help herself and takes over everything; so, Reader's family figures if she's not there, Reader can make a decision *for herself*.

when Elspeth finds out, she's hurt, but it's Sir James that calms his wife down by reminding her that she had something not-so-nice to say about damn near every single dress Reader tries on. so, she accepts this one detail being out of her control.

the entire wedding screams "old money" because half of the decorations and details are wildly redundant, but there's no such thing as cost to the family. Elspeth is def living vicariously because she thinks she knows best, so she spares no expense - perhaps even going as far as to rent exotic peacocks to roam the grounds simply because the Cattons can!

they're definitely going "Crazy Rich Asians" in the sense that Felix's marriage is going to be the event of the decade, like Collin and Araminta's wedding. again, it's not even about the union but just a chance for the Cattons to remind everyone that they were lesser-than. Felix thinks it's normal, he thinks this is how it's supposed to be 'cause he's def removed from reality, and truth be told, he loves the attention. the bragging rights.

Felix might be a bit more reserved than his family, but he's still a Catton and glamour is *all* he knows, especially for an event like this. he doesn't stand up to his parents because they're paying for everything, which makes him feels as if he's not entitled to an opinion. so, he lets Sir James and Elspeth plan the wedding they want since all Felix has to do is show up. he'll do his best to alleviate stress, acting as a buffer between his betrothed and parents, but he doesn't dare open his mouth.

this is marketed as a once in a lifetime celebration, so nobody is willing to butt heads with Sir and Mrs. Catton.

on that note, yeah, i can see Felix having an intimate proposal. maybe in the field at sunset, maybe at a cafe in town, but not in bed. he's got a flare for the dramatic, so odds are, he's actually down on one knee. he's young, so he doesn't need to make a huge ordeal for the proposal since it's an incredibly intimate moment. he might even proposal on a whim / impulsively. he's had a ring for months, planning the best moment to ask Reader, but he gets anxious and one day, it just happens. it feels right. Felix has that burning feeling that he needs to ask now else he'll fuck up his plan in the future by being so nervous. so, yeah, he just asks one day - barely even thinks about it! he just knows Reader is who he wants, so why plan the "perfect moment" when an opportunity organically presents itself?

now, Venetia can be a bridesmaid, but she's not MOH. again, depends on the reader, but i imagine Reader's sister or her own best friend should be MOH. Reader wants Ven involved in everything, but no, she's not gonna be the one standing next to Reader when she gets married. Ven helps decide bridesmaid dresses, works with Reader's sister and / or best friend to plan the bachelorette party, and is present for any conflict between Reader and Elspeth. she's sorta like a tie breaker because Felix is on Reader's side and Sir James is on Elspeth's. Ven is the one who helps keep Elspeth under control, the only one bold enough to stand up to her mother without fear of repercussions. she sees how Reader is struggling to both have the wedding of her dreams and respect for her MIL, so, Ven imposes herself to give Reader a break. to be the voice Reader lost.

and just because it's fun, YES, Duncan is def in attendance, handing the Cattons and Reader's family tissues during the emotional moments of the wedding. he eats two slices of cake. and for the fuck of it, you bet your ass Duncan lets loose a little and Cabbage Patches on the dance floor.

i think it's nice to imagine Felix being all cute and intimate, but personally, i think he's so far deep in his family's way of living to truly be humble. sure, Reader anchors him to reality, but he still lives this extravagant life so he doesn't know the definition of "humble". but that's why i said, it depends on your reader - but in my opinion, Felix is a little too spoilt to have the forethought to marry privately. or maybe he knows it's a fight not worth having with his parents, that no matter what, they're going to do what they want.

so maybe Felix is the one encouraging Reader to just "go with the flow" because resisting is futile. perhaps Reader comes around to the idea of a grand wedding because she knows she'd never have this sort of experience with anyone else; so, why not bask in it?

I don't know what happened with this one. They seemed so painfully boring for my entire time in this fandom, and I have been in this fandom since before Kushina was introduced. Minato barely has a personality. Kushina's personality is basically just Naruto's, and I don't super like Naruto. Like, they did seem like they actually love each other, so good for them? But I didn't care about them. And then I did. And I don't know why. I don't know what happened. Their dynamic isn't super interesting. Maybe that's why I got brainworms? There's something comforting about the blandness of their romance. It's uncomplicated. They just like each other. If you shake them hard enough, you can reveal secret mildly unhinged personalities. I like this ship fine! I like Sakura/Akatsuki ships where the other party values her for her more violent, unhinged traits. I just think Sakura should get to go a little wild, as a treat. I liked their canon interactions, and I think Sasori would recognize a lot of really positive attributes in Sakura other people gloss over.

I will admit that lately I have been growing a little less interested in them as a ship, though. Like I think they might be more interesting with a platonic dynamic? I would read a "Sasori mentors Sakura" fic in a second.

martharose my beloved you have the potential to be so incredibly complicated for both parties through no fault of their own. because there is no erasing that rose just existing made martha’s time with the doctor worse, that her absence was this looming shadow over martha. and then i think about martha’s face when she sees rose for the first time, the ‘oh my god, he found you’, the surprise at seeing this mythical woman in the flesh. i think about how much rose doesn’t know about what came after her, and about how rose’s introduction to martha is her being brave and clever enough to hold the earth itself hostage against the daleks, about ‘she’s good’ and how rose knows the doctor would only let the best of the best onboard the tardis.

i want martha to have the world’s worst timed, most ill-advised crush on rose so bad. i want rose to fall a little in love with her for helping to save the world. i want them to dance around the topic of the doctor, because how can you ever just mention all of that casually? i want it lingering under there, though, this guilt for rose over the hole she left that the doctor tried to make martha fill and hurt them both when she couldn’t, when she was too much her own person to ever be rose, and. not a feeling like she couldn’t match up to rose because martha knows she’s that and more. but this sort of uncomfortable ‘should i have tried harder, or was i worse for trying at all’ about her time on the tardis.

i think they could get through it, i do. but i think it’d be rough. it’d be like going through a briar patch and getting all scraped up to get to the other side. but there’s a foundation there of respect from their very first meeting that could grow into a beautiful partnership.

i love it, i wish they had more screen time. the enemies to lovers where they are leading opposing forces, but they respect each other, and trust that the other one is honorable??? v sexy. locking eyes across the battlefield? v yuri. their subtle un-humanity, like they are very different, a crow and a sleeping water dragon, but this slight distance from ppl is similar. leaders but they feel like outsiders among their own ppl, do u see my vision. kokomi, a soft-spoken, but strong-willed leader and sara, her adamant knight, who finally has a leader who actually cares about ppl and is worth being loyal to. mwah. and ofc they can bond by nerding out about military strategies

also sara needs to get laid like very badly, soft dom koko tentacles bdsm would fix her tbh

To try to give a genuine answer to an apparently genuine question:

I personally dislike estinien and aymeric both.

Estinien is an unreliable ally who has shown himself willing to shun (post HW MSQ), disdain (HW MSQ), or be violent towards his allies (ARR DRG queats), and Aymeric is a proponent of the forced adoption of the WoL into an Ishgardian house, and manipulative in a way that makes him a very good politician but not a very good person.

I dislike the ship between them because I feel that they would both be bad for each other, for these reasons.

I'm not trying to hate on you, but you seemed to be genuinely asking a question so I'm trying to genuinely give an answer.

I debated on actually replying to this because what I have to say might come off as rude. But I'm afraid this interpretation of both Aymeric and Estinien feels EXTREMELY innaccurate. I'm not sure how far you are in the story because you only mention up to Heavensward, so I don't want to spoil anything post-Heavensward. But even then, these claims simply make no sense.

In my opinion, calling Estinien "unreliable" and "disdainful" to his allies is wild. He can be distant and harshly blunt sometimes, but he very clearly cares about other people. He is open about his respect for people like WoL, Alberic, and Aymeric, and his familial fondness for Alphinaud. That is NOT disdain. If anything, his aloofness is due to the trauma of losing his entire family and village, making it difficult for him to form new connections out of fear of losing them too. While his all consuming desire for revenge was unhealthy and misguided, it was fueled not by disdain for others, but rather extreme grief for those he loved so dearly and lost so violently.

During the DRG quests, finding out the truth about Alberic and Ferndale was DEVASTATING for Estinien. He openly admits that Alberic is a father figure to him, and learning that his mentor was hiding the full truth was shellshocking, making him more susceptible to Nidhogg's influence and manipulation. And it was that manipulation that led up to the questline's final confrontation.

As for Aymeric, since when has he ever "manipulated" WoL? He's probably one of the most honest characters in the game. If you're talking about his appearances in ARR, you're far from the only player who initially got "secret villain" vibes from him. But most players eventually realized that was never his intention. He's not lying to you or trying to trick you into doing anything during those initial meetings. If anything, he's being brutally honest about how Ishgardian bureaucracy works, regardless of his personal opinions on the matter.

Also, I have no clue where you got the idea that WoL was "forcibly adopted" into House Fortemps to further Aymeric's political agenda, because that is not even remotely close to what happened. Haurchefant is the one who petitioned for them to get into Ishgard because he wanted to protect them after the events in U'ldah. Count Edmont took WoL, Alphinaud, and Tataru in because Haurchefant vouched for them, and because they had literally nowhere else to go. Pretending it was some political scheme by Aymeric and not Haurchefant's faith and admiration for WoL that got them into House Fortemps is a major disservice to both characters and a critical misinterpretation of the plot.

I couldn't disagree more with the idea that Aymeric and Estinien are somehow "bad for each other". Like I said in my original post, they have been friends for a decade, and it says a lot that Estinien opened up to Aymeric despite the former's reluctance to form bonds with others. Aymeric considers Estinien his "dearest friend", while Estinien sees Aymeric as Ishgard's "best hope" and literally threatens to take down the Holy See himself if they threaten harm against him. Whether that's romantic or platonic love is up to interpretation. But it's very obvious that love is there.

So yeah, I'm sorry, but I can't humor this reasoning. To me, these claims unfortunately give off the same frustrating energy as players who insist their WoL hates the Scions because they are "manipulating" their WoL and "using them as a weapon", when it is glaringly obvious that the Scions do not view WoL that way at all. At most, the only Scion to behave even remotely like this is Alphinaud during A Realm Reborn (and the ARR finale and Heavensward literally show him growing out of that and realizing how arrogant and inconsiderate he'd been.)

I swear I'm not trying to be mean. But I really think you should replay some parts of the game over, because based on what you've said here, I think you're severely misunderstanding many aspects of these characters as individuals.

Meronia for the ask game?

My least favourite ship.

I’ve talked about it before, but I’m not satisfied with the wording of that post, so I won’t link it here.

Just to make it clear, I am absolutely chill about people liking ships I dislike.

But if you ask my brutally honest opinion, I think Mello and Near are Antarctic cold.

They’re too different, and none of them wishes to step into the other’s world.

One of the things that makes Mello furious about Near is that Near doesn’t take things personally. Mello makes everything personal - his rivalry with Near, his actions against Kira, his interactions with Soichiro, and with Halle. Mello is extremely involved in life around him, and he is furious when it comes to interacting with Near, because Near is NEVER personal.

Even when Light Yagami makes his pompous Kira speech in the end, Near answers with pure facts. You just cannot get to Near. The way that Mello is used to deal with people doesn’t seem to work with Near. It makes Mello furious and normal relationships impossible.

for fandom, preferably the marauders fandom if that's alright- i have recently been sucked into the marauders fandom due to a friend(i did not expect this much angst-), now onto some info about myself. i am an intp and a libra, currently taking psychology, who also does art from time to time- but for the most part i am a cosplayer. i read, occasionally, and it's always either a really dark novel or a light-hearted romance. my hogwarts house is slytherin, which people say are a half surprised and half expected, because i try not to get too confrontational but when i am- i get too brutally honest and make sure my opinion and thoughts are clear. i can also be a teeny bit petty at times, and i've been known to somehow always get what i want- i am a big big big hopeless romantic, and i pretty much spoil my friends by buying them flowers or writing letters to them almost everyday because that's my love language. when people first meet me, i am very cold and distant which intimidates most people but once i feel comfortable around someone i get pretty loud and clingy. my aesthetic, in the best words that i could put it in, is the grungy rockstar gf aesthetic.

i also do makeup on anyone, to the point that my classmates will ask me to randomly do their makeup during lunch break. i practically live in eyeliner and black coats. i am also polyamorous, asexual, omniromantic and identify as a demigirl(though i am starting to question my gender identity AGAIN). i spend most days at the library or just my room in general, but on the occasional days where i go out, i will normally go visit museums, go shopping, or stop by cafes(i love cafes alot). and i think that's everything? again, apologies if i did something wrong and congratulations again on finishing school :DD

Gideon/Dulcinea is obviously not a "good" ship but I find it hotter than I'd like to--unless this referring to Gideon/real!Dulcie rather than Gideon/Cyth!Dulcie, in which case I've never actually thought much about that possibility but I think it could potentially be really sweet. Griddlehark is Fundamental and Harryanthe is great (and hilarious, and potentially also really upsetting in ways characteristic of this series!) as a waystation on the long and winding path to endgame Griddlehark.

Nottpott for the ship game asks!

Send me a ship and I'll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it (and also maybe a fic rec).

NottPott for me is a cute ship. When I want something a little softer, a little less in-your-face about the dramatics. If Scorbus is next gen Drarry, then NottPott is Drarry light 😂. You still get that Gryffindor-Slytherin dynamic, the meddling friends, the shift in ideology, but Harry and Theo never had the same animosity that Harry and Draco did or Harry and Severus even. The het equivalent would probably be Hansy or Panville.

Still a great ship though! It might not be top tier for me, but all of the NottPott fics I have come across (or written) I have absolutely loved. Also, this one artist (who I will rec below) super converted me hard to get aboard the NottPott ship because they kept prompting NottPott in all the fests and drawing them so cutely.

ohh please do, i have so many opinions about dmbj. that being said, obligatory disclaimer, all of these are very much my subjective opinions, not fact. fandom discourse ahead, you’ve been warned

for the ‘choose violence ask game’:

1. the character everyone gets wrong

if i had to be completely honest, my hot take would be that technically a distressingly large portion of the vocal dmbj fandom gets pretty much all the characters wrong to the point it’s actually kind of concerning, but if i had to choose one character in particular, it’d have to be xiaoge.

and look. i understand that a number of people have only watched the dramas and aren’t particularly inclined to read the books because of the time commitment that comes with so much material to get through, and that’s fair. but it’s very telling when someone only goes off of the dramas to shape their characterizations (and even then, i could have a hotter take that the dramas, exceptions aside, all have the broad strokes of the characters down with only details that change, so there’s really no excuse) because in the books, xiaoge is repeatedly described as being indifferent and very much disinterested and untouched by what goes on around him. xiaoge choosing to invest himself in something or someone is very much something noteworthy coming from him. and it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have emotions, but it does mean he’s a very nuanced character to explore when it comes to them and how they’re displayed.

it’s incredibly frustrating to see how many people, often times for the sake of a trope or a ship dynamic, make him one dimensional. either he’s a cold, almost brutal s*x predator, or he’s a tortured angsty soul that’s meek and emotionally vulnerable the moment he trusts someone enough, or he’s dramatically waxing poetic in his head about his feelings for X Y or Z, or possibly worst of all, he’s a mindless one-fit-for-all doll that caters to whatever ship he’s been placed in.

it’s not like i’m the authority on characterization, everyone has their biases, myself included, but the key to understanding xiaoge is to remember that he’s an old soul, disconnected from the world and people around him both through his particular circumstances and through the way he’s been consistently dehumanized practically since he was a baby. his sense of self is in shambles, and only begins a slow (re)construction through his slow-growing friendship with wu xie and pangzi. of course he has his doubts and fears—the whole evolution from ‘i have no connection to this world’ to ‘my one connection to this world is you’ doesn’t come out of nowhere—but those doubts aren’t expressed in conventional ways, just like any love or affection he might feel will never be thought of or expressed in grandiose or over the top ways. a lot of the things he feels just are, and it doesn’t make them less true or complex just because xiaoge isn’t one to overanalyze things and accepts and is secure in them so long as he’s been made aware of them. he’s also assertive in his judgment of things in general. i could go on and honestly i’m not sure i’m even touching the tip of the iceberg as far as fandom treatment of xiaoge goes but just. yeah.

6. which ship fans are the most annoying

this. is a very loaded question with a very loaded answer. i keep feeling like i need to make disclaimers before i say things like “if you like this it’s fine” because yes it absolutely is. i’m not telling anyone a ship is bad. but if i have to point fingers, there’s a group of people who happen to be very into particular ships with whom i’ve had. less than great interactions. so this isn’t a judgment of the ships so much as it’s a reflection of my experiences with a lot of people who happen to be vocal about liking them.

and in my time in the dmbj fandom, no group of people has been more aggravating to me than ls shippers and lc character shippers in general. and tbh i can extend that to the people who make shipping every possible character combination under the sun their entire personality. again it’s fine if you like any of these things. but that i’ve personally experienced, too many of these people manage to often offer the unholy combination of being extremely pushy about their preferences even when someone politely expresses they’re not into them, and having the worst takes imaginable on any given character they claim to like. it’s to the point where while i initially had no particularly strong feelings about ls as a character, i genuinely do not like him now and do not want to hear about him in general. and tbh by extension i’m not the biggest fan of lc and his characters just because i unfortunately associate him with these people and their behavior. you can imagine how much i enjoy the fact that these are also the group of people who’ve effectively silently bullied a number of other people out of fandom spaces enough that they’re now the face of the dmbj fandom on a number of platforms.

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

once again this could apply to so many things. but i think the one thing that gets me the most is the very widespread opinion that dmbj as a canon is inconsistent and full of plot holes and makes no sense. i’ve had people tell me that dmbj canon doesn’t exist because the canon is so incoherent and incohesive, and that the fandom likes it that way because it’s more fun. and that’s just a preference for fanon over canon that’s being justified by passing it off as a fact for some reason.

it’s fine to have preferences, but i draw the line at intentional misinformation. and once again, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, it’s telling of people having largely engaged with the dramas over the books, because the books, while imperfect and sometimes leaving things unanswered (and even then that’s becoming a moot point seeing as npss is tying up a lot of those loose ends in the more recent arc of the story that predictably over half of the fandom is unaware of because it hasn’t been adapted), very rarely end up having major discrepancies. the books, which sorry to say are very much the definitive canon, are actually very cohesive both for plot and characters, and the loose ends, while frustrating, are never to the detriment of the plot. nothing is openly contradictory, or rarely. and with such an extensive source material that doesn’t hand you answers on a gold platter, it also requires some close reading of seemingly innocuous details that become relevant down the line, which can get complicated given the sheer amount of information.

so while it’s not necessarily easy, no dmbj is not full of ‘pits haha’. people only think that because a) they’ve only watched the dramas which are an absolute mess and b) it makes them feel justified in considering dmbj like some free-for-all chinese tomb raiding themed dnd game they can remix ad infinitum, when i honestly don’t understand why that even needs justification. you can enjoy fanon without dunking on both the canon and the people who enjoy engaging with it idk.

17. there should be more of this type of fic/art

this is honestly a great question and i had to think about it for a bit, so i’m going to offer two (ish) options. the first kind of general one is i wish there were more book-centric fics instead of drama-centric ones, because while i enjoy the shows for different reasons, i love the books and the specific vibe they have, and just overall i prefer them by a fair margin. i’d specifically love fic about anything post restart but that’s a pipe dream tbh.

the second is i wish there were more gen fics about the main characters? i know there are a number of gen fics out there, but a lot of them tend to include or focus on minor characters i don’t particularly care for, and so much of the fic involving the iron triangle specifically tends to either be shippy, or even when it’s gen is still flirting a very close line to shippy that’s gen only in name and hinges on the fact it doesn’t include s*x or kissing or explicit mentions of relationship status. but i want the gen fic where it’s just wu xie and pangzi goofing off over a beer, the gen fic where it’s just pangzi trying to get a rise out of xiaoge by telling him ridiculous dirty jokes as they clean xilaimian’s kitchen while xiaoge stays impassive and eventually wu xie comes back from wherever he was and digs at pangzi for it. i want the gen fic where it’s just wu xie and xiaoge on a walk in the mountains, no talking, just enjoying each other’s presence and the peace the silence brings.

special mention to i would also like for ship fics that include one pair in the iron triangle to not write off the other member for very obvious reasons. like shipping pangxie and conveniently taking xiaoge out of the picture by writing him off as ace (which is a hc i vibe with but not when it’s a poor excuse for excluding him). or like shipping pingxie and just not including pangzi in situations where he very much would be. romance and friendship are different types of relationships but both are as valuable and can and should coexist without invalidating each other.
