Remisa?

I don’t like human x Shinigami ships in general. Remisa is the one I dislike the least, mainly because of the cute fan art. While I don’t like it romantically, I really like it as a mother/daughter dynamic. I think this fits better with what we get in canon: Misa as the ungrateful daughter and Rem as the unconditionally loving mother who sacrifices her life for Misa.

How I feel about this character

I love Katara. I love that she can be kind and generous, yet she's also given space to be full of righteous anger, or even lash out viciously from a place of selfishness or deep emotional hurt. She's one of the most hope-filled and idealistic characters in ATLA - but once someone shatters those ideals, beware the wrath that she will unleash. I love that she's a strong and nuanced character that happens to be female, and NOT the generic and boring girl power trope.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Hmm...Toph probably? I adore their friendship, probably because it feels so genuine and realistic to me.

My unpopular opinion about this character

So I have several lol. One, Katara is WAY overshipped in ATLA fandom. Not surprising, since she's at the center of the "ship wars" where people fight about whether she belongs with Aang or with Zuko (like what??? why are we fighting about this lol). But even outside of her main ships, I can't stand that her character gets reduced to someone to be shipped in most circles, which is evidenced by the fact that I have a really, really hard time finding Katara metas that have nothing to do with shipping and that also have the depth and thoughtfulness and substance afforded to metas about other ATLA characters.

Two, her character gets too much unwarranted criticism, especially for the times when she actually exercises her agency (and she does this a lot) and when she is less than kind toward her friends (usually Aang or Zuko). The double standard of criticizing female characters for things that would be praised in male characters absolutely applies to how people treat Katara's character.

Three, I don't agree that "Katara deserved better" in ATLA. IMO, Katara deserves better from the fandom.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I really, really would have liked to see canon pursue her arc as the last waterbender, especially with relation to Hama. I understand why the show didn't do this (time and plot constraints), but that was the one loose end that left me hungry for more. But fortunately fanfic is a thing, so I wrote Snow Demon to explore that thread as far as I could take it.

for the ask game! Verde/Skull?

SHIP IT!!!

What made me ship it?

Honestly, Verde/Skull is one of my all-time favorite ships. Mainly because they have a lot of similarities, actually. Both have attacked fellow Arcos. Skull during the mafia land arc attacked both Reborn and Colonello. And then Verde also attacked the Arco during one of the anime's filler arcs. So they both don't have the best of morals. For real, if Skull wasn’t so weak, he'd be as dangerous as Verde. Both also have flames that make them hard to kill, what with Skull being immortal and Verde having overpowered lightning flames. I think it'd be cute if Verde used his lightning to protect Skull and if Skull, in turn, made it so Verde couldn't die so easily. There is nothing more romantic than forcing your bf to live forever with you. These two can definitely make up the chink in each other's armor.

I also headcanon that Verde started out as a civilian who ran with a bad crowd in college/university so I feel like Verde can relate with Skull's plight of being the 'civilian' of the group. Which I think would make him a bit more softer to Skull.

I also really really really love small/tall ships. Especially when the small is the more fighting oriented one and the tall is the cool intellectual one. (+1000pts if the Tall is also really good at support)

What are my favorite things about this ship?

I love how soft they can be or how sinister. They fit both of those vibes so well. Like Skull can be seen as a weak civilian in over his head or the wolf in sheep's clothing fooling everyone. While Verde could be the monster who doesn't hide who he is, or the man who's so smart, he's ignorant to what's hiding in plain sight.

Skull is strong enough to carry Verde brainrot.

I love how Skull is like, idk he's kind of that ball of sunshine character while Verde is more like a moon, I'd say. So I think it's cute when people have Skull doing things like making sure Verde is caring for his health or just dragging Verde out to experience the world instead of shutting himself away from it.

Alternatively, I love the idea of Verde patching Skull up and worrying about his reckless behavior. He definitely carries around a portable first aid kit so he can patch Skull up on the go. He's probably working on an invention where he can project his lightning flames around Skull to better protect them.

Which leads me to another thing, I really like the thought of them both being too weak to protect the other, but they try to anyway. Verde is a scientist,he's so ridiculously smart, but he'd never win in a fist fight. Skull tries to be strong, but he doesn't have the right training. So you know, just imagine them being so helpless to protect the other but trying to anyway despite knowing it would be futile.

I also like the opposite, where both are strong enough to protect each other.

They have power couple villain vibes!!!

You gotta love the scientist x dumb sweetheart that willingly let's himself be experimented on trope.

And....look there's probably more, but this is getting long, so yeah....just going to move on to the third question.

And you’re the only one he’ll deal with. The other archivists will try to help him, if only to give you a break because you’ll spend the rest of the day steaming. But he’ll simply stand at the counter and open his book, fully ignoring whoever talks to him unless they wear your face and share your name. It drives you insane, makes your skin crawl. 

Today is such a day, and you stubbornly stay in the back room, sorting through recent submissions of physician research that’s already been uploaded to the Akasha. Your coworker pleads with you quietly, hands clasped, “Please, he’s been standing there for twenty minutes! We can’t get any work done up there!”

“Why not? It’s not like he’s talking your ear off or anything,” you respond flatly, slotting a book into place before turning back to your cart. 

At this, your coworker practically whines aloud. “He’s menacing!”

“It’s just Alhaitham. Trust me, the worst thing he’ll do is flip the pages a little too hard.” And it’s true, because he won’t say a word to anyone he doesn’t have to, and it’s only through trial and error that the archival team realized you’re the outlier. If it’s not you at the desk, then it might as well be no one at the desk.

Alright, first things first-*rambling activated*

From Day 1 of getting my sights on the Twisted Wonderland art alone, Sebek was definitely one of my favorite characters designs. He just looked rad as hell with the green hair, them antique green-gold peepers, that bone structure. Mwah, chef kiss 🤌 then Hairdown!Sebby came into existence? Oh man. 10/10 💚

So I didn’t completely fill in the “mean fandom” square cuz I see/have seen a lot of polarized responses to Sebek in the fandom. People have either LOVED or HATED (or loved to hate lol) Sebek from what I’ve seen. I get it: at first glance he is very rude, loud, stubborn, obsessive, etc etc.

Lately, oh yes, he has gotten more popular across the board due to the Diasomnia chapter releasing on both servers, and his inclusion in side events, which makes sense. Croc boi has gotten more screen time so we get to know him better and see him interact with his dormmates and the other characters. Also shout out to @nuitthegoddess and @ryllen whose Sebek x OC/Yuu content endears me to the tsundere croc even more lol (aka “blorbo by proxy”)

But me personally? I haven’t disliked Sebek since the beginning. I thought he was kinda funny and silly in that he is so boisterous and hyper focused to a fault. Lately, though - from seeing his interactions with Silver and other characters in side events and the main story, he has grown on me tremendously. Some of my favorite cards that I have are Sebek cards (Camp Vargas!Sebek I’m looking at you, buddy)

so yeah, I’m a bit anxious about our crocodile boi because I’ve gotten attached and once you get past the loud angry Malleus obsessed nerd-jock, Sebek is actually a very kind, loyal person and I don’t want anything bad to happen to him but I do wanna know more about his background.

I would love for there to be a closer look into his upbringing as a fae halfling and how it’s affected his self image and other things psychologically/emotionally and such. That would be hella fascinating!

FREE SPACE: I am lil’ biased cuz I have had a deep love of reptiles from lizards, alligators and crocodiles to dinosaurs and dragos so that makes me very fond of Sebek too lol 💚

Ok, here are my top 5 DN hcs that I’ve read somewhere (at least from the ones that came spontaneously into my mind) in no particular order. (ask game)

Light can’t drive. Idk why but the thought of Mr. Perfect not having a driver’s license or being able to drive amuses me.

Mikami is shredded af. He goes to the gym on a regular basis, so this makes sense to me. And I like the thought of the nerdy guy with glasses who hides a six-pack under his coat.

L also eats other things than sweets. If everything he eats is sugar and fat with no nutritional value, he wouldn’t live long enough to reach his 40s.

The tennis match in the manga/anime is the idealized version of the events in L and Light’s head. Both have no muscles whatsoever and are terrible at tennis. This is one of my absolute favs.

And because it’s one of my otps, I like the hc that Light developed a bit of a soft spot for Misa at one point. Not that he directly loved her, but he felt some affection for her.

"Unwillingly" is a bit strong, but Haley x Abigail is pretty good, and what I'm currently making scenarios for.

I know Penny x Maru is usually the go-to for f/f, but I don't really love how the most popular ships are usually just pairing people with their friends.

But Haligail has the opposites attract, two people who need each other but absolutely will not say it aloud vibes that make writing that pairing interesting. Deep down, I feel like they're both just people who want to be allowed to do their own thing, but also want someone to care if they don't come home.

12. the unpopular character you like and why more people should like them

this is one i feel like kataang fandom in particular could use a little more work liking, if i'm being honest. actually, scratch that, i think everyone in fandom could use a little bit more work liking this character.

and that is... zuko.

not fanon zuko, mind you - canon zuko. because let's be honest, canon zuko is far less popular most people would want to admit. they hold up a woobified oc and claim that it's zuko, but fanon zuko is really just aang in zuko's body.

canon zuko, on the other hand, throws temper tantrums like a brat and is a racist, colonist piece of work. he's impulsive and reckless (in all the wrong ways) and berates everyone who's around him. he's crappy even to his friends and family, betraying his uncle for his sister and chasing after his perceived "honor," trampling everyone - even an extinct culture - underfoot.

so why do i like him? because of his friendship with aang.

i know a lot of kataangers dislike zuko because of how his stans scream his praises from the rooftops and demonize aang for things not even a thousandth of what zuko has done in canon. similarly, i know a lot of so-called zuko "fans" absolutely hate it when someone (rightfully) points out zuko's flaws in canon, hitting them with the "but he apologized for it!1!1!"

which... no.

instead, what i find beautiful about zuko is how his relationship with aang changed him, how his redemption arc was fueled in part because aang extended a hand of friendship out towards him. i also really, really enjoy delving deep into zuko's rightful guilt about being part of an imperialist nation, of helping his nation continue their conquest over the world, even if he didn't directly contribute to the air nomad genocide or fought as a soldier against the water tribes or the earth kingdom. and it's always aang, who should have more reason than most to hate zuko, who forgives zuko, and from that zuko learns how to heal and forgive himself and be better.

that's the zuko i like from atla. not the bad-boy, suave, blameless womanizer that fanon likes to uphold, but zuko, who has done wrong and will continue to do wrong, who will still stumble as he grows and learns, who may not ever unlearn some of the things he's been taught, but who will still try because his friends are right by his side and can help him back up when he falls... even if they have to call him out for it.

21. part of canon you think is overhyped

zuko's and azula's agni kai. i think everyone focuses on it because it involves two fire nation siblings duking it out.

even withholding the shipping lens, i've found that a lot of fandom tends to hyperfixate on the fire nation, from only exploring those characters to even explicitly defending them from anyone who points out they're an imperialist nation.

and we all know which ship fandom just loves that scene🙄

why not more love for aang vs ozai?? an epic battle betwee the last of an extinct nation and an imperial who wants to kill him off, a battle that was only won when aang held steadfast to his values as the last air nomad. in a world that told him he couldn't be both the avatar and the air nomad, he looked them in the eye and said, "i can, and i will."

and i think that's a beautiful message for everyone to hear.

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

i'mma be honest, despite shipping kataang... i don't really consider myself a shipper. i don't tend to look at media through the lens of my favorite ship, so as a result, i sometimes feel almost... disconnected from the shipping community as a whole.

the most notable example of this being the balcony scene with aang and katara during The Avatar State. a lot of kataang shippers love that scene because it shows how worried katara is for aang, which is great! don't get me wrong, everyone has their own lens and they are valid... most of the time.

but for me, it was less about that and more about the conflict between aang as the avatar and aang as a person and what it means for katara. because if you think about it, when katara grew up, all she has ever heard was legends of the avatar, this godly deity who could singlehandedly stop the 100 year war - only to find that he was just a kid, like her.

so for me, that scene wasn't so much that she was telling aang that she loved him as it was that she was worried about losing aang, her friend, to aang the avatar. she was worried that in the process of trying to stop the war, he would lose his humanity, sacrificing it for the "greater good" - something something similar to how he didn't want to lose his heritage as an air nomad for the sake of victory something something parallels something something. i could go on, but this ask is already getting long, so i'mma stop it here for the sake of your and my sanity.
