FUCK LABS

I do 8 hours a week of them irl, and fallen london labs, I am sad to say, mirrors reality in that labs are lengthy, torturous, and make you wish you were literally anywhere else. There is one improvement: there's no strict time limit in which to try and get everything done – I am free to abandon the lab any time I like and zail to Godfall to try to cleanse my misery through pilgrimage.

The university laboratory is too realistic for me to enjoy it.

H: How would you describe your writing style?

Hmm...if I had to name parts of it, I'd say: close third person perspective, a focus on emotion/character work/character voice, and a certain flow or rhythm? The last bit feels ambiguous, but I can't find a better name for it.

M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with?  Did it turn into a story?

Probably my mer!Cullen AU. I constructed a whole world where the Dalish are largely seafaring and Templars are these nightmarish mermaids (I started this shortly after reading Into the Drowning Deep, which is fantastic if anyone is into horror books about killer mermaids forced to the surface by environmental pressures/global warming) with Circle Towers under the sea.

The fic itself is about Cullen deciding to leave the Templars and washing ashore where Emmaera is conducting a study of some Elvhen ruins there. I've written part of it! Unfortunately, like most of my fics that require a lot of worldbuilding, I stopped having fun and haven't picked it up for a while.

U: Is there a pairing you would like to write, but haven’t tried yet?

Lots of platonic relationships! I have lots of little bits and pieces of fic about Bethany and Maria, Wen and Morrigan, Wen and Sera, and so on.

Romantically, I have been meaning to write out some of my Merrill/Isabela feelings. Also I have been thinking about Andraste and Shartan a lot, not necessarily in a romantic way. I just think they're Neat. But writing them coherently would require a level of lorediving that I'm not prepared for at the moment haha

Have a couple- TUA fic not my own... man hard to choose. Obviously Shifting Mirrors is up there. Along the Corridor and Up the Stairs by @ancientstone is a classic one, too. TUA fic of my own is absolutely A Rusty Cog. I miss writing that fic, not because I really have more to write of it but I miss being in the headspace thinking about it. A great outlet for a melancholic mood. Still one of my favorite things I've written.

Non TUA Fic, forever and always Walking With a Ghost/Running With a Ghost (Being Human UK fics), and unpretty's Sorrowverse DC fics, specifically Christmas in Kansas and Third Wheel

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

I've got so many half-baked things sitting in my WIP folder. It's getting a little ridiculous (I just checked and there's 37 WIP files in there what the fuck). A lot of them probably aren't going to ever really go anywhere, but they're in that folder with the little snippet I've written. A lot of them spawn from playing around with ideas with @non-plutonian-druid. Highlights... There's the Centaur AU (Pluto's art all with that found HERE) where the Umbrellas run into centaur!Delores. There's the Number finds out about/meets mannequin Delores. There's the Amanda meets Old Five while he's out on a job in the 70s because Number fucked up some time travel. One that I've never even written is this whole plot where Amanda gets kidnapped with Five as collateral, Five gets drugged so he's loopy and useless, but Luther, Diego, and Klaus come to rescue them. Amanda meeting our Five with Number is in the same Nothing Written boat. Got too many WIPs and ideas and so little writing happening.

😐 What embarrasses you most about your own writing?

Man, I think the same stuff that embarrasses most writers. If I get too aware of what I'm doing, how often I use certain phrases or words, I overthink and get self-conscious and embarrassed about it.

There's also the funk of just being embarrassed about people irl finding out I write fic, even though there isn't anything to be embarrassed about - I've written a fucking novel! Two novels! How many people can say they've done that? But I think I've still got that Was In Fandom In The Late Aughts baggage when fanfic was more taboo and cringy in mainstream instead of the normal thing I guess it is now. It's a thing I'm working on.

Always happy to draw a Caius, so have a serious-faced Caius leading (the heavily obscured) Volturi troops through some water! I found the idea of vampires coming out of the water very interesting, because it's definitely a great tactic strategically (I assume it hides their scent and it's harder for people without gifts to follow their tracks because the water is shifting things around.)

🗝: Asdfgghjkl. Well. Obviously Edward in his moon-milked state would love to live with Art. Unfortunately Perihelion already has a lot of companions, lovers, suitors, and paramours so aside from the fact that Art would get a restraining order if those existed there isn't really space (that's the polite excuse Art uses to get Edward to fuck off. In actuality his partners generally have homes of their own and not every single one of them is at his house all the time and there's also his base camp so he's totally capable of making room, he just doesn't want to). Also Edward would not contribute to the household upkeep (NOT THAT PERIHELION DOES. VICTORIAN ERA THIS PERSON HAS NEVER COOKED IN HIS LIFE).

💜: Perihelion's favourite memory of the pianist is probably every time she trusted him during playing with soul. He loves being trusted, it gives him the opportunity to demonstrate his care through keeping that trust.

The pianist's favourite memory – (and this will show my "forgot to screenshot pretty much all of playing with soul") is probably how steadfast he was when she showed back up again and asked him for help – she showed up and he was not only delighted to see her and welcoming but offered immediate material support. Instantly ride-or-die.

Oooh sorry this took a minute to answer - it was really tough to choose! In no particular order:

Cole: Absolutely fascinating character concept (he made himself a physical being out of an attempt at compassion and then immediately murdered a bunch of people, also out of an ideal of compassion and justice that ultimately caused unintended harm? I'm gnawing on it) and some of my favorite party banter only happens if you're traveling with Cole (he and Bull fascinate me).

Merrill: I think it's her desire to stare down something that caused you harm and think I can understand this. I can fix this. I can make this what it was supposed to be. The way she sees beauty in places nobody else bothers to look. Her equanimity in the face of people being so condescending all the time. I just love her.

Josephine: We are presented with a world with very clear expectations: violence has to happen, death is the obvious means to the end the Inquisition is working toward, and pretending otherwise is naïve. And yet, in Josie we have a character who experienced death firsthand once and dedicated the rest of her life to finding any other solution to the problems of Thedas. What incredible strength of character she must have to look at the world we see in the games and say "This is not the only option." I admire her so much - I could write a whole essay just about Josie haha, but I'll leave there for the moment c:

Zevran: I absolutely love "liar" as a core character trait and Zevran is an expert. I think the game presents you with a very two-dimensional person initially (flirtatious assassin) and the more you talk with him the more obvious it becomes that this is only one of several masks he wears. I love that so much of his romance is uncovering what parts of him exist beyond this performance and I love that the artifice is as much a tool as his sword is. He is more clever than he makes himself out to be, has more depth than he is often given credit for, and writing in his voice never fails to cheer me up.

Cullen: I think there's something really interesting about the fact that we see Cullen in every game. We see him at his lowest and most vitriolic. We see him unaware of what horrors will come. After everything, we see him struggling to become a better person. I think that's what has always fascinated me about Cullen: there is no blunting how we see him act and how drastically he chooses to change afterward. I have written whole paragraphs to go here instead, but I will sum up by saying it was very unfair of Inquisition to hand me this man and say "here you go, he is horribly flawed and painfully aware of it and struggles to do better against overwhelming odds. be cool about it."

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

Here's another (head)canon - Hargreeves specific, is that when they're talking to one another/thinking of one another, names go in number order. I think they grew up in that order and it is ingrained in them in a deep and subconscious way. Saying "Five, Luther, and Diego are over there" sounds Wrong in a way they're not even aware of, so they'd say "Luther, Diego, and Five are over there".

💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done?

Yes and no. I gave up long ago on researching actual physics, the most I do on that front is scour Wiki pages for terms so things at least sound Smart and plausible.

I don't go on too deep of dives, mostly quick googles for statistics or facts so I know how to pace things, so they sound right, or I have a better reference of how to set up a situation. I've done some gun research recently for a Patch, Lila, and Five fic I've been playing with (ex: what does a big rifle with a silencer sound like?). Sketchiest dive I've gone down was when I was trying to figure out how fast Five would realistically bleed out in Holding It Together so I was googling things like "how fast bleed out from direct stab to heart" "how much blood children have". You know. Normal things.
