Your champion has won the poll. We did our best and came close at the end with a 1% difference, but alas, the Taxpayer armada was just ever so more numerous than ours. Our armies for our respective overworked blorbos shall part on this battlefield not as enemies, but as compatriots. Your followers fought well, as did ours. Congratulations to Miss Taxpayer, she managed to beat Little Miss Child Labour.
it was a damn good fight but susan managed to finally beat a 12 year old in fist to fist combat......impressive work

I’ve seen people state that Dana Terrace has a tendency to emasculate the characters she doesn’t like, especially villains . Like often making them be defeated incredibly easily or making them do things that go against their established characters. From what you’ve seen do you think this is true?
Honestly, I think you can make the case that she does this to characters she DOES like as well; not the emasculation part, but the out-of-character moments. The most recent offender is The Collector who was previously established as enjoying watching Belos abuse and murder grimwalkers and is looking forward to the Day of Unity, but in For the Future, none of these malicious traits are present, and he seemingly does a 180 in his characterization. They're just a Lonely Kid with superpowers instead of the chaotic god child who apparently delights in misery.
It's one thing to present a character one way and gradually reveal the layers underneath but such a drastic change with seemingly no explanation is not character development, it's a retcon.
The show also has a problem with setting up how some characters change: Darius was initially presented as being contemptuous of Hunter but warms up to him once he stands up to him. Considering his history with the previous Golden Guard, shouldn't Darius know what Hunter goes through instead of assuming Hunter is spoiled? Darius' rebellion against Belos is also muddled; he becomes a fully-fledged CATs member because he cares about people and is suspicious of the Day of Unity. Except, I don't believe we're ever shown why this is the case. Darius is a Coven Head and it's his job to get more recruits and was trained by the previous Golden Guard. Logically, he should be a firm believer, but instead he uses his status to climb the ranks to act as a mole. This is a great starting point but we're missing what triggered this in the first place. The only hint is that the death of his mentor is what started his rebellion against Belos. But this isn't really expanded upon and it raises more questions. How did he find out that it was Belos who killed his mentor? How much did the Golden Guard tell him? If the death of the previous GG is what made him turn on Belos, then why does he treat Hunter poorly? If you're going to have a character act as a mole, then at least explain what their motives are and how they were developed.
This shows how fundamentally flawed the world-building in The Owl House is; characters only follow Belos when it's convenient to the plot. So in the end, you have characters who oppose Belos because they're on Team Good Guy (Darius, Raine, Eberwolf), the ones who support him because they've always been Evil (Kiki and Terra) and the rest of the isles who either celebrate him at a parade or denounce Eda's potential execution because two teenagers said so.
Anyway, onto the villains...
Odalia is essentially a war profiteer who doesn't care that her entire species is about to be wiped out by the DOU, even though logically she should. She cares about her company and a company can't profit if the majority of your customers are dead. She is tyrannical, cruel, and greedy and it's fun to watch her be reduced to a mere servant. I don't mind this development for Odalia, however, it does point to the trend of taking powerful enemies and reducing them to a shadow of themselves for comedic purposes.
Kikimora was presented as a terrifying enforcer of the Emperor's laws but she got progressively more pathetic to the point where she had to impersonate a teenager and serve as the right hand to Boscha, a character we haven't seen properly since Season 1. She is presented as power-hungry, pathologically ambitious, and has an intense desire to earn Belos' favor, but when he turns against her, she helps King find the Collector, effectively helping defeat Belos. But recently, she is back to her Season 2 shenanigans by taking over Hexside and the question is why exactly? We saw her world crumble before her and she reverts back to her previous traits instead of actual characterization. A common interpretation is that she is just THAT obsessed with power that nothing can break it, which isn't...realistic. FtF doesn't show why Kiki does this, she just does. Perhaps because of the psychological damage of Belos betraying her she decides to continue with what she's always done, except that this isn't telegraphed clearly. Instead, she just comes off as a mini-boss before the final showdown.
That leaves Belos as the only real credible threat and while he is terrifying on a personal level, we never see him at his full power; for apparently being the most powerful "witch" in the isles, his magic doesn't really stand out from what was seen before. And in King's Tide, he was just playing with Luz. He is ultimately brought down by his own hubris and misplaced trust, and an over-powered god child. Belos' defeat is thematically appropriate so it's not as egregious as Kiki's but it does fall into the category of "Easily Defeated." Obviously, we'll have to wait for the finale to see if that trend continues.
Belos' defeat by the Collector seemed to set them up as the new threat in town, that Belos, for all of his power, was ultimately nothing and the mysterious Collector is a force to contend with. But no, the Collector is largely kept in check by King. So Belos' defeat doesn't do anything for either character; we don't get any reaction from Belos about his centuries-long plan blowing up in his face and the Collector isn't even bad, just misguided. As for the misunderstanding between King and the Collector and their "new game"? I don't think the Collector will actually do anything that will have lasting damage, not while Belos still breathes.
And that's a common problem the villains in this show have, any attempt at interiority or psychological depth is explicitly rejected by the show (remember Kiki and her family, how she was worried about being disowned? Psyche! She'll drop everything for even a smidge of more power!) and the lesson seems to be "these characters have always been Evil and nothing will change that."
It can be fun watching villains go from intimidating to pathetic, but if that's all you do with them then it becomes boring fast, at least for me. Ultimately, I think the biggest problem with the villains is that you're supposed to take them at face value: Belos, Kiki, Odalia, are Evil for petty reasons and will do anything for power. Not all villains need to be nuanced with complex characterization but if all of your villains are just Evil all the time and the text explicitly does not want you sympathizing with them or even showing a different side to them, then that's just a wasted opportunity to flesh out your world with interesting characters.

We know that if they were to throw down, even with magic, Olivia would punt Kiki like a football.

okay sorry if youre over toh at the moment but one thing i just realized is that despite preaching being different is good all the important characters are pretty elves and the other non human looking charas are relegated to comedic background characters like ill never be over how they treat hooty be so fr
Buddy, I don't know if I will ever be over how hard that show dropped the ball on basically everything. Anyway, more to the point, I actually have an example of this exact thing that's been causing me eye-twitches since early season two: Kikimora and Lilith.
I am still a major hater about how Lilith's entire arc went down and how she... never really faced any real repercussions for ruining Eda's life, but the fan response to her was nothing but positive. Kiki, on the other hand, was constantly getting the short end of the stick, has a legitimately very interesting character, and she was the one getting hit with the more negative fan opinion.
And guess which one is the more conventionally attractive.

What kind of Halloween costumes would the witch switch characters wear?
Phillip: Previous to the events of Witch Switch, he'd go as something generic like a zombie or something in order to not stand out or invite ridicule. If he'd gone as something he'd WANTED pre witch switch, it would have been a witch hunter outfit, but post... well, that's not really him anymore. So he doesn't know what he wants to go as!
Alador: Mad scientist. He begged Odalia and Darius to be The Creature. They both refused.
Darius: Oh, he just turns into an abomination. To Phillip's horror and belief that he's going to blow their cover.
Odalia: Elizabethan era queen costume
Kikimora: Brings her abomaton. Also to Phillip's horror.
Ada: Traditional witch (she gets into Azura while in the human realm)
Raine: They dress up like a fox to match their palisman.
Caleb: He loooooooves matching costumes, so whatever Phillip or Evelyn are, he dresses to match. He'd also dress in that cardinal costume from the montage at the beginning of TTT
Evelyn: Masquerade style costume

In another round of Interesting Details Flouting Around Possibly Worthy Of Notice — Hunter’s hands
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other people have noticed this as well — Hunter grabs his hand after high fiving Gus and grabbed it earlier when it was shaking. The aren’t the only times attention was given to Hunter’s hands, though they’re the first ones I can remember off the top of my head. This, combined with the fact he’s Never shown without gloves in the show, has made people wonder if something is up with his hands — if he’s hiding scars or is missing fingers under his gloves or something
But outside the show…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are by TOH’s crew, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re canon — just because someone works on a show doesn’t mean they can’t have fun and make silly art, after all. The top two are very clearly non-canon from how Hunter is dressed — but consider for a moment this: the top two were drawn by Dana Terrace, the creator of the show, and even featured pretty consistent scarring that we haven’t seen on the show yet (Terrace draws Hunter with a scar on his left arm both times. The scar seems to be high enough on his arm that his short sleeve outfit could conceivably hide it), and the bottom one is a behind the scenes showcase of how Hunter almost looked in Labyrinth Runner. And the all show Hunter without noticeable scars or limb differences in his hands. And they show his hands at several different angles, too — front, back, palms up and down.
Again, these drawings aren’t canon, but they were either done by the person who created Hunter or were almost canon by almost appearing on the show. It’s possible Dana Terrace could be pulling an Alex Hirst and deceiving us with her art, but honestly that doesn’t seem like her MO. Likewise, it’s possible that the Hunter designs were discarded specifically because they showed his hands ungloved, but I’m pretty sure that given the focus on Hunter’s hands in the past, the designers would not be left in the dark when making alt outfits for him (and the derby outfit just held more narrative weight than if they made Hunter a new outfit completely)
So if Hunter doesn’t have anything visually different about his hands, why does the camera focus on them repeatedly and why hasn’t he appeared without gloves on the show yet?
Here’s a couple ideas:
A) they’re a way to show vulnerability and isolation
Hunter looks at his hands in almost confusion after high fiving Gus, and given how he didn’t understand being hugged later in the episode (and his overall isolation from other teens), he might not understand what a high five is. He might have even been startled by it, going off his reaction. And when his hand shook, it was after watching a stone bird crumble while he held it — he was probably thinking about Flapjack, whose life he has reason to worry about, given Belos’s stance on palismen
A lot of people start to shake from anxiety, fear, and exhaustion, too, and given Hunter’s trauma and implied sleep deprivation it isn’t surprising that he’d show physical signs of them
The TOH crew could also just be using gloves to symbolize being separated from the rest of the world, like how in Frozen they were used to symbolize hiding and lies. Given that Hunters arc includes him forming healthy relationships when he was abused and isolated in the past, there could be a huge Elsa moment coming up where he rips the gloves off for good
B) While Hunter might not have physical scars, his hands could still be damaged
Hands are incredibly sensitive, after all. They’re full of nerve endings and are pretty darn fragile all things considered. Hunter is a child soldier, and even though he was given a magic staff by Belos, it’s stated he didn’t get it until after he had become Golden Guard — he, as a non-magic child had to go through the same gruesome training teenage and adult witches had to. There’s also the fact that Belos is all but outright shown to physically abuse him.
Odds are he’s broken fingers or damaged nerves in the past, and while he’s shown to be pretty dexterous, he could still have flare ups of pain (something that could also be triggered by trauma) or might just not be able to physically feel things the way someone with undamaged might feel — they could be hypersensitive or numb and the gloves provide him with a layer of sensation dampening or could help him with his grip
The Owl House is not a show that shies away from disability in its main characters, metaphorically, fantastically, or literally — Eda’s curse is played completely one for one as a metaphor for chronic illness, and Luz is written as neurodivergent. Hunter is already written as someone with PTSD and anxiety, and his magic staffs could be seen as mobility aids. I could totally see TOH showcasing someone with an invisible disability by having a character have not-visibly different but still not completely abled hands
C) hands are a minor symbol for either the Emperor’s Coven, or for the abuse Hunter has endured. Specifically humanoid vs non-humanoid hands
We’ve seen Belos grip Hunter’s shoulder tight enough to at least be comfortable while Belos’s was, essentially, falling apart.
Tumblr media
Belos has also struck walls in front of Hunter hard enough to crack them while Hunter turned away, and even nearly cut Hunter’s face, while in similar gooped up states
And while Hunter isn’t exactly popular in the Emperor’s Coven, Kikimora is debatably the one in the coven who hates him the most, even trying to outright kill him at points, and her entire thing is being a hand demon
Tumblr media
Lastly, Darius
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don’t lie, for a second we all thought Darius was gonna strike Hunter here with his abomination arm, Hunter especially — he visibly braces himself — before gently donking him on the head instead.
While Darius, as a Coven Head, technically isn’t part of the Emperor’s Coven, he’s still part of Belos’s inner circle. Darius in second went from being just another adult who mistreated Hunter to being one of Hunter’s biggest allies and positive parental figures. And it’s visually shown in how his hand went from a monster’s to humanoid’s
While not every character with inhuman hands is evil on this show, the focus on Hunter’s hands vs his enemies and allies could just be simple visual contrast.
D) it could be foreshadowing to a future injury
Granted, I don’t have as much evidence for this one, so it’s just speculation, but like. The audience’s attention is only drawn to Hunter’s hands because it’s meant to be on Hunter’s hands. What if what we’re supposed to take notice of is the fact that Hunter’s hands, though hidden by gloves, are what you expect from hands — unscarred, unhurt, and paired off. Hunter currently has a bounty on his head, after all. Him being killed off just feels kinda unlikely, but I can see him being injured, maybe with a gory discretion shot (not gonna name the show, but we do know Disney is willing to go there)
Maybe a scene of Hunter without his gloves to really bring the audience’s focus in, followed by him being hurt or even losing a hand
What do y’all think?

Camila: *is put under a sleeping spell by a witch/Kikimora*
Luz: *panicking* “Oh no oh no oh no what to do what to do-“
Beardo Philip: *kisses Camila on the lips*
Camila: *wakes up*
Luz: “….WHAT?!”
After yawning, Camila asks what happened while rubbing her head.
When Luz explains, Camila looks at Beardo Philip and smiles.
She then gradually pretends to go back to sleep and, in a playful, helpless tone, states that she requires more kisses from a very handsome man in order for her to awaken once more.
Beardo Philip, being the handsome man that Camila is referring to, develops a playful smirk as he sweeps Camila off her feet and carries her away.
Each time he lowers his face, he places a gentle kiss on Camila's lips, causing the mother to let out a chorus of immense giggles.
Luz grimaces at the couple's affection as she follows behind them, grumbling under her breath about how she wishes that the random, short "witch" with red skin who had taken off had put Philip to sleep so that he wouldn't be able to make out with her mom.
Meanwhile, Kikimora, dressed as a witch while hiding behind the bush and having witnessed the kiss, was FURIOUS.
Nothing was worse for her than accidentally falling into a time pool, and upon doing so, seeing her future boss with someone who wasn't her.
She was certain that the sleeping powder she had bought would have been effective.
(She poured some sleeping powder in her hand, blew it in Camila's face, and quickly took off.)

Did you think Owl House lacks nuance when it comes to its villains Like how Belos gets hinted to have a deeper relationship with his brother but was written off as evil or Kikimora and her family life?
Yeah, the Owl House had some difficulties with its villains. Either they got redeemed and turned into nerds with a lot of their pizazz taken away, or they ended up having their complexity taken away and were treated like one-dimensional characters that ultimately were treated like jokes.

What I’m getting at is that they’d be friends, not enemies. They’d bond over the annoyance of filing taxes.
Also Molly should win. Viva La Blyndeff

op I am obsessed with your kidnapped AU please when you have time (I know you're busy, no pressure!) please infodump about it I am fascinated, so curious, I want to study the AU like a scientist studies a newly found organism (/compliment!)
Oh, you flatter me :> You’ve also given me permission so uhhhhhhhhhhh heres some random stuff bout the
*~*~*~Kidnapped Caleb AU~*~*~*
Hunters upbringing:
Hunter was kidnapped from the hospital in his mothers room by Philip, who kind of just picked him up and walked out with him (prolly while dressed as a nurse)
Philip names him “Caleb” cause he’s fucked up like that (but I’ll be calling him Hunter when describing him, to avoid confusion)
He’s been responsible for most of the upkeep in the house and has been since he was about 9 years old. (cleaning, taking out trash, organizing stuff, doing laundry, and occasionally cooking- though he couldn't follow recipes that were too complication)(starting going on grocery runs around 10-11 years old)
He’s also responsible for cooking whenever the cult gets together and has a Big Meeting with food and everything. He became responsible for this at around 13-14 years old cause his uncle realized he was Really Good at Cooking.
He likes birdwatching, it's one of few things he can do from inside the house that lets him interact with the outside world safely. Philip fucking hates it but lets him do it anyway.
Nobody in the cult is aware that Hunter’s been kidnapped, except Kikimora, who overheard it one day while snooping like she always is. The ones who know about Philips brother assume he’s dead because Philip barely ever talks about Caleb. And when he does, he does it in the past tense and doesn’t use his name.
Nobody knows Hunter is Philip's nephew, as Philip insists on being called “father” while others are around. (except kikimora once again, because shes Just Like That)
Hunter doesn’t find this that weird because other cult members also refer to Philip as “father” on occasion
The Cult: (name pending)
This might be the least developed part of the AU. My knowledge of cults is mostly about Weird American Fundie stuff, and a few instances of big cults from like the 80s that used a lot of spiritual language and perpetuated a lot of abuse. And The Family International (I went down a rabbit hole about them a while ago.)
I don’t want to be insensitive about how I portray the cult either, because I know there’s kind of a problem with people not taking cults as seriously as they should be taken. So if I have the time I might wanna flush out the cults structure a bit more later.
Soo keeping that in mind, the cult is gonna be mostly based off of christianity. I might get some things wrong/weird since I was raised Catholic and most cults I know about are more fundie based, I think.
But the basic ideas I have right now are these:
Philip is the head of the cult, obviously
Hunter is his right hand man but isn’t actually given a lot of power in the cult, just duties and chores to run
There are a few smaller branches of the cult across Gravesfield, but they all get together for big celebrations and stuff
There is some sexual abuse that happens but I wont go into graphic detail or anything. It’s mostly just crossing people’s boundaries and making them feel humiliated and stuff.
A lot of crossing ppls boundaries in general, under the guise if bringing people closer together
Physical abuse, verbal abuse, spiritual abuse, honestly just about every kind of abuse you can imagine. Some of it is ritualized, especially when Philip makes
NO PETS. ESPECIALLY BIRDS/MAMMALS. If you have a pet, they can never be in Philips presence or you won't hear the end of it. Something about keeping animals under the same roof as humans being “dirty” or something idk
A somewhat loose hierarchy system, mostly based on how much Philip likes you. Except for Philips “Eyes and Ears” which are initiated with an official ceremony (eyes and ears = coven heads but there are no “covens” so they’re tasked with being his Eyes and Ears instead, to make sure everything is going good and report back to him if not. I might change this name later cause I just came up with it)
A lot of talk about what to do specifically to save your soul, how much income to contribute to the cult, how much time and labor to give to the cult, how to get other people interested in the cult yadda yadda yadda u get the point
I’m toying with the idea of Camila nearly joining the cult after Manny died, since the community seemed very comforting and offered her a support system to help take care of Luz. But I haven’t thought about it much yet.
The CATTS:
OK SO I’ve been thinking about Raine a lot. Sort of. I’m just thinking, because Raine, Darius, and Eberwolf are actually anti-Coven ppl in TOH. Which makes their role in this au a bit confusing. My first thought was that Raine could be some kind of investigative journalist who’s in the cult to take it down or expose it or something. They’re a relatively new recruit who heads their own branch of the cult, and is in charge of the music for get together and like drum circles and stuff.
They know Philip had a brother, but haven’t realized yet that said brother is still alive cause they haven’t gone looking into Caleb much. Right now, they’re mostly focused on trying to uncover anything super illegal, specifically about whatever weird machines Philips always tinkering with. If Raine had looked into Phillips family history more, they probably would’ve found the story about Calebs kidnapped kid and put two and two together about Hunter.
The thing is though, they probably wouldn’t have gone to the police immediately even if they found out Hunter was kidnapped, cause they have a very bad feeling about whatever Philip is using those weird creations of his for. They’d be worried that if he gets busted for kidnapping, then whoever he’s collaborating with on his creations will get away scott free and Raine will never find out what they’re actually for.
HONESTLY idk if that’s how investigative journalism works. Maybe a real investigator would go in knowing everything about Philips background and would begin to suspect things immediately when they saw Hunter. But for now Raine doesn’t know about Hunters kidnapping.
Anyway, I don’t see Darius or Eberwolf as being in a similar situation, I think the two of them joined the cult genuinely and are still a bit caught up in it, but are now a bit disillusioned with its leader for whatever reason (god knows there are plenty of good reasons but I’ve heard it's hard to break out of a cult mindset so I’ll have to think of a really good one later.)
Kikimora is a diehard cult member from a rough family background who is desperate to please Philip and hold power over others. Just like in canon! I'm also excited to develop Caleb (the real one) more, but I’ve run out of steam to write about the AU so that’s all for now.

Imagine the Hexsquad comparing mythological depictions of magical creatures and going, "They got that right/wrong." Discussing possible mutations, evolution links (missing or not), and unique ones to each realm. At least until getting to goblins/imps, seeing similarities to Kikimora, and swearing to not even present to her the adult material involving them. She may have tried to take over the world, but even she doesn't deserve that mental scarring.
I could see that early on when the Hexsquad was trapped on earth they’d look through the books Luz has and clarified some stuff.
Kikimora, while mythologically r house demons and r more bird like. Tho’ I didn’t really get the goblin girl fascination that happened several months ago. I mean, I understand the appeal of shortstacks, just look at how cute and hot Midna from Twilight Princess is, but goblins? Idk, I guess they’re not my thing.
The Hexsquad, at least one of them would have a file drive of those sexy goblin girl pics in case Kikimora gets too annoying and goes “hey Kiki, this is what humans think of you” “what? What?! What!! Oh, my!!! H-Humans are disgusting!!”

Weird question but with how small witch switch Kikimora is does she basically just have to run everywhere to get to places on time
I just feel like she’d get exhausted very fast
In terms of class, she probably has accommodations that either let her leave class a few minutes early to get to her next one on time, or an eternal late pass so if she gets to class late it's not counted against her.
Honestly, most people don't notice or miss her when she is missing from stuff, so. Depressingly, it's not an issue. But yeah, she has to run, or hitch a ride on someone/thing bigger.
