Hmmm just gonna spit this headcanon out in text post form since A. I don't think I could exposit it well enough in image form and B. It's not actually textually/thematically substantiated and I don't like actually staking my stuff on just vibes alone*

But anyway. I'd say it's pretty evident that all the islanders forgot their names, right? King obviously. Because why the hell else would he do that, but also Siffrin No Middle Names No Last Name.

They're 'pretty sure' they've 'always' been 'Just Siffrin' 'as long as they can remember'. It's a pretty cruel twist of the knife to say that they don't even get to keep their birth name as a memento, which is why I'm saying as such.

My utterly unsubstantiated claim is I think it'd be cute to say that Sisyphus *is* the name Siffrin initially picked, assuming the myth of King Sisyphus is recontextualised as idk, just a play or something in the setting. But I like the idea of Siffrin going 'oh shit 🫵 he's just like me fr' at a tortured fictional character long before the irony kicks in.

As for how Sisyphus -> Siffrin. I think that chronic mumbler and emotional doormat Sif just did not correct people who misheard the name during their time travelling, and went through enough places with incompatible phonologies (pronounceable sounds in the language) without ever really writing it down that it just got kinda. Changed until it was unrecognisable, and Siffrin just went with it until the earlier pronunciations slipped out of their swiss-cheese brain. And they just kinda don't remember any of that.

Also, something something the horrid realisation that Siffrin also named themselves after a King. Just not as blatantly.

*(though I think there's something here about Siffrin, a guy from a belief system that seems to thoroughly disincentivise autonomy and self-motivated choice continuously having their hand forced to make changes/choices they don't want but have no choice but to... It's not solid enough to really back this up tbh, but it informs it.)

worst part of canon

probably almost everyone's endgames, Bonnie and Elena's in particular. Bonnie has to go to the wedding of the guy that killed the love of her life and Elena has to live out her human life with Damon like,,, Bonnie's is obviously more tragic from a general character treatment perspective but god my girls. you deserved so much better.

That and the season five d*lena arch. Even when I was thirteen and shipped them I thought it was terribly written, bulldozing Elena's entire character base and just on the whole being a boring mess of noncommittal storylines. It felt like the writers were too afraid to fully stick to one point of the love triangle and just hopped back and forth between potential endgames to avoid alienating one side of the audience. While also just playing out a horrific abuse storyline while displaying a remarkable lack of self-awareness.

Honestly, thinking of that I actually might change my answer. My least favourite part of canon is the Katherine body-switching mess in season five. Truly the holy grail of tvd writing, disregarding bodily autonomy, and the trauma of it all immediately after the storylines run its course, reducing Katherine and her inconsistent moments of being interesting down to being dick whipped by Stefan of all people, Damon literally killing Elena's childhood friend and trying to kill her brother all because Katherine (honestly, quite politely) broke up with him. And all of it being completely ignored two episodes later. It's the pillar of everything tvd does badly and I hate it so much.

worst part of fanon

pretty much everything I've discussed in previous asks, the treatment of Elena, the idolization of the Salvatores, and the twisting of canon to serve those two purposes.

adding onto that this really irritating idea that you can only like one character at a time, its not always the case but like-, if you love Caroline you have to shit on Bonnie and Elena (the babying of Caroline another thing I fucking hate about this fandom), if you love Elena you have to shit on Bonnie and Care. It makes sense because tvd was built on picking sides but this hell fandom would be a much easier place to navigate if people could just like a character without playing trauma wars and having to prove their fav was the most wronged of all wronged.

I think the romanticization of their relationship misses the mark by as wide a margin as denying the plausibility of romantic relations/entanglements between them.

Owing to the lore connecting them, imo, Ciri's and Avallac'h's relations hold an obvious unwritten potential for explicit or implicit romantic developments.

I also think, however, that people should have fun with fictional characters in whatever way they please.

you could say that vriska's highest desire is safety, and that she pursues it in two ways--control, and escape, with control being secondary to escape. foremost she wants to simply be out of the bad situation, but if that doesn't feel possible to her, she'll settle for trying to control it. and when you look at her relationship with terezi through this lense, it seems pretty clear that terezi provides her with control. control over herself ("vriska you're doing bad fix your behavior") and control over her situation (helping her feed her lusus/being her co-leader). and that's nice, but when i first thought of it like that, it made me a little sad. what terezi gives vriska will always be secondary to what vriska wants most, which she tries to acquire from john or tavros. but then i thought... at the end of homestuck, vriska is "stuck." she can't escape paradox space and make her way back to earth c (or she doesn't want to, but for now let's assume she simply can't). what does terezi do, then? she resolves to find her and bring her home. she decides to provide her with escape, rather than control. and the only other time she's done so is when she killed her on the meteor rooftop. and i think that's just... really kind of beautiful? killing vriska was an unintentional act of love, and now, at the end, she's repeating it, intentionally, not to help her on accident by getting rid of her, but to help her on purpose by finding her. like kissing someone on accident once and re-doing it, better this time.

#im not alone in wondering why john doesn't just retcon powers nab vriska and bring her home #and i suppose this provides an answer to that question #because it's not john's /place/ to do that #it's best if terezi is the one to save her #it's important that she has the chance to prove that her relationship with vriska can be more than just a salve for inescapable misery #and to perform that inversion of their meteor roof incident #asks
