Oh so vet appointment went well. Puter still weighs about the same as he did last year, so he's still a little chubby and could lose a wee bit. Gonna cut his dry food down a little bit and see how it goes. He could use some dental work again, but his teeth aren't too bad so my vet isn't too worried about it, but he did say that his broken canine tooth should maybe be pulled, which is what they told me last year and when I took him to my other vet for his dental work they told me it was fine and I didn't need to worry, but today he showed me that there's a little pink dot at the tip of the tooth so something is exposed. I'll schedule him a dental again soon and talk to my other vet about removing that tooth. He still eats fine, so I figured he was probably okay, as opposed to when his teeth are bothering him and he stops eating as much which is what got me to have his teeth done last year in the first place and then afterward he was fine. They did pull one of his molars last year also. But yeah now that he pointed it out to me I will be speaking with my other vet. Only reason I don't have Puter's dental work done here is they charge me legit twice what the other place does and a 2 hour drive is definitely worth $300 for me thanks.

Hey who wants to hear the miserable story about how I had to deal with loneliness this year? Feel free to scroll on I just need to write it down to, I suppose close the chapter on the story? Read if your curious, or maybe also need guidance, or just want to learn some tips on how to help someone dealing with it. This will be poorly structured it’s just... getting it off my chest I guess.

People talk sometimes about university students often struggling with loneliness, and often going overlooked because they’re not seen as ‘vulnerable’ as other populations. I mean, look! They’re in a city! They go out every night and piss off the locals! They can’t be lonely!

It started back in 2018 (yup, that far back), when my friends decided that it would be better for my mental health if I didn’t live with them. No lie, that was the actual fucking reason. I was heartbroken; I’ve missed out on a lot of typical “growing up! Yay!” Type things because of my mental health, trauma and bullying and the fact that “living with friends” was gonna be added to the list was fucking heart breaking. But I dealt with it, because I had no where else to turn. No one else to move in with. I cried for like 2 hours solid after they so sweetly told me they didn’t want to live with me because I have *anxiety*. Not even one of the quote unquote “””scary””” mental illnesses (which would have been a MAJOR dick move), just plain old anxiety attacks and hiding from people to calm down. I proceeded to have break downs every Wednesday for 3 months while searching for somewhere to live, bc it was always a stabbing reminder that I was so unwanted.

(They planned to move in with 2 other people so it’s not even like they were only searching for a flat to fit *just* them)

I study 300 miles away from home, literally the exact opposite part of the country. Despite not having many friends growing up I was never lonely because I had a great family who would always chase it away. Maybe I was lonely a bit at school, but I could always come home and my parents chased it away. It was recurrent, but not constant.

I got a place for the new academic year. Studio flat, great location, tiny and over priced to Hell but I was in a safe area which was great because *no one was looking out for me anymore*. I didn’t have flat mates to check I was alive everyday, no one to chat to when I got home. If I got sick, I was completely on my own. My next door neighbour is lovely, don’t get me wrong, but she’s a working professional, and I’m a second year student. Everyone else in studio flats are mature students, masters, phD students or working people. And me. I have so little in common with these people it’s tough to start a conversation with them.

My birthday is early in the academic year, so we didn’t celebrate it until about a month after. Half of my friends didn’t even bother, no card, no presents. Okay, fine, I’m not materialistic, but acknowledgement would have been nice I suppose. This is the only time they came around my flat, and they are the cake I baked to celebrate.

But they inexplicably started to just stop interacting with me. There were 5 of us, they’d pair up in lectures and only talk between themselves between lectures and left me sat quietly trying to speak to someone, ANYONE, because hello? I haven’t got FLATMATES. I talk to NO ONE outside of this “friendship” group. They don’t seem to care much, they just keep telling me how wonderful it must be to live in a studio.

They invited me round to celebrate another friend’s birthday at their shared flat. He gets presents from everyone, including the two that left me out. Their flat looks lived in, there’s board games out while I don’t have room for any of them in mine. They’ve got bean bags everywhere it looks so damn nice. “But your kitchen is bigger than ours!” Eve tried to tell me (an absolute LIE), but they don’t roll out of bed and immediately land in the kitchen. They don’t have to chose between watching tv, eating or living the flat any time they want to dry clothes bc there’s no room. I want to cry throughout the visit, I storm off once were done. I don’t know why. I know now.

Loneliness feels like a weight on your chest. It’s a double edged sword where both edges only cut you. You desperately seek interaction but it also upsets you. I wanted to hang out at their flat because I hadn’t hung out with them in nearly a month at this point, but when I got there I realised they hung out together every. Single. Night. While I cried alone in my room. It made everything so much worse. And they laughed it off.

They stopped posting in the group chat, they talked to me even less. Never invited me out, but there’s no way I could prove *they* went out so it was pointless complaining about it. I was meant to go to a concert with one of them, I reminded her about tickets an entire month before, offered to buy hers. She cancelled 5 hours beforehand. I went alone.

It was a Toyah concert. I fought back sobs in the opening song “Good morning universe”, because it repeatedly asks “how are you today?”. I was awful. I finally had it figured out. I was lonely, isolated, and I didn’t know what to do.

Before anyone gets too sad, the story only continues for 2 weeks past this concert.

1st November, they joke about how Blake, friend number 4, practically lives at their flat, and I get angry. Why does HE get to live there? Blake has flatmates, Blake’s not alone! I should be practically living there because there’s NOTHING in my flat but silence. The internet is on the fritz and I’ve yet to figure out the tv, I don’t even have background noise except the kettle! I storm off, vow to never interact with them again.

I go out for drinks with my neighbour for her birthday. She buys me a pint of coke bc I don’t drink. I hate coke, but I drink it all and chat with her friends. It was a great night.

That weekend I bake pumpkin cake and bread for knitting society, and calm down. I overreacted a bit surely. One more chance, that’s all I’ll give them. The cake and bread doesn’t all get eaten at the society so I bring some for them on the Monday.

Tuesday night is bonfire night. I sit in my flat wishing I could go out and see them rather than just hear them, but I don’t know where to go. I have no one to go with.

Wednesday im sat in lectures beside them, and a friend not in the group but still a friend comes over to chat. One of them excitedly tells her about how they went to a display last night “look at these photos I got of (friend in group)!” I ask if they went out last night, the phone is quickly put away, they ignore me. I ask again. The friend outside of the group is confused and leaves before the lecture starts. I spend 3 hours with loneliness ripping out my lungs, because how could they? They could’ve dropped me a message to say they were going and I could meet up, but they didn’t even do that? Why?

After the lectures finished I corner one of them. The first of my friends at university. The first person on my course I befriended. “Did you go out last night?” “Yes” “without me?” Another runs up “it was last minute it wasn’t planned!” Laughs it off. So I rush off. I don’t say good bye. That was it.

I went home and cried. Told my parents what happened. Cried down the phone to them. “It’s time to cut ties with them”. I know it is. It’s still hard.

So yeah. Miserable story. But any sad story should have a happy ending, right?

The next day I told someone what had happened. She immediately called it bullshit and invited me to join her friends. They’re really nice. I like them.

I left the old group chat. No explanation, just “I’m hanging out with X now. Laters” and I left. I wrote my frustrations and explanation in a shitty poem, called it shitty in the poem itself, but also said they didn’t deserve better. They didn’t deserve even that, so I didn’t send it. I think it was a very sexy decision of mine.

But most importantly, through the hardest points, most of my weekly socialisation every week came from the two societies im part of: my society (knitting) and the nerd society. 4 1/2 hours a week of socialising isn’t enough, surprisingly. But it got me through.

But more importantly are the people I met there. I don’t want to tell them what happened, I fear they’ll be upset that they didn’t help more, but they helped so damn much. So much more than could ever be expected from anyone. That final Wednesday, when I’d cried my heart out, 2 people texted me out of the blue and lifted my spirits so much I laughed that evening where I’d cried in the day. Stupid texts too. “Baby rabbits and kittens, cos you’re a vet right?” And “I only just got this message, I would have LOVED some pumpkin cake 🙁”. Poor lads probably weren’t expecting the wild conversations we had afterwards but friendships blossomed from it. Sorry new friend, hope you like the cheese scone recipe you definitely did NOT see coming that day.

The society meets on a Thursday, but it was to be a video watching thing more than a social thing. Loneliness was still tearing me up inside, I wanted to talk to someone damnit! But I went because I needed cheering up. I laughed so hard, I sang theme songs with others, and we all went to the pub afterwards. I’d never been before, I planned to leave at half 10 so I could shower and go to sleep in reasonable time for a 9am lab. I got chatting to the cake boy at 22:25. By the time we left the bar and he’d had his fill of chocolate rolls at my flat (I offered, he was hungry and Sainsbury’s was closed) and I was in bed, it was 00:40. Oops.

But I wasn’t lonely anymore.

Whats there to learn? I suppose don’t take advantage of your friends. If someone is living alone, check on them OFTEN. Make sure you don’t just pair up for conversations in lectures. Invite people round more.

And don’t under estimate the power of a text message. The lack of one ruined one friendship, one daft one about pumpkin cake built another.

(Plus interest) Im a bit of a safety freak so Im not too worried about injuries such as car accidents or dog attacks as I would stay way clear of other dogs. Id be more concerned about leg injuries or infections...cancer. But with cancer, depending on the age and likely hood of survival as each case is different, it may not even go to surgery. As a family we are not known for being on time when travelling, always last minute leaving and always late arriving!  For our River Thames Cruise with Le Boat we chose to take Rosie (cocker spaniel) on her first holiday.  This trip would include Rosie’s first ferry crossing with Stena Line on the Stena Line Superfast X from Dublin to Holyhead then return.  Rosie is young and hyper, quite needy and definitely a nervy dog, so…should we take a hyper, needy, nervy dog on a ferry?  More importantly, was taking her on holiday a good idea or a bad idea in the first place?  Only one way to find out…do read on!

DOG ON A FERRY

Not wanting to stress Rosie or make her feel unwell in the car we knew that we’d have to leave home early, drive carefully and make frequent stops.  When travelling with your dog on a ferry it’s a must to arrive at the ferry terminal early and with plenty of time spare before your sailing.  This will allow your dog to get out of the car, have a walk around the ferry terminal and stretch their little legs before boarding.  Also, and on the flip side of the coin; don’t arrive at the ferry terminal too late!   Be mindful that the dog is going to be in the car, or the kennels; for a considerable length of time during the sailing.

When taking your dog on a ferry with Stena Line; you have two options.  Your dog can either stay in the comfort of your own car, or stay in one of the dedicated kennels that are situated on the car deck.  For us, the decision was easy and we chose to leave Rosie in the car.  Rosie is happy in a crate in the boot of the car and it is a safe place for her to feel relaxed and comfortable.  Normally Rosie is left with Nana and Granda when we travel and we’ve never left her in a boarding kennel before.  With that in mind we felt that the onboard kennels would not have been appropriate for Rosie on this occasion.

SWITCH OFF THE CAR ALARM

If you leave your pampered pooch in the car, there’s a couple of rules we think you should follow.  Always remember to leave your windows partially open to allow for ventilation during the ferry crossing.  If safety is your concern, use a window ventilation guard, we find the expandable type work best.  A small amount of water is advisable depending on the sailing time; use a non-spill bowl or a non-drip water bottle with roll dropper.  Oh yes, almost forgot…if your dog is in the car and the car has an alarm…don’t arm it!  If you’re unable to disarm the car alarm, then you’ve two things to consider: do I really need to take pooch on this trip, and/or, am I happy to leave the car unlocked on the ferry?  If the latter suggestion is what you opt for, remember to take any valuables on board with you.

That really depends on your dog, its nature, how calm he or she normally is and whether they’re used to travelling.  .Whether you leave your dog in the car or use the Stena Line kennels, we would always recommend that you try to remain with your dog as long as possible before the sailing.  You should also try to remain calm around them.  Allow other guests to board first and ensure your dog is settled before securing the vehicle and making your way to the lounge.  Also, try to be one of the first to return to the car deck upon arrival to eliminate any unnecessary stress for your dog as other guests return to their own cars.  And a handful of sausage bites is always going to go down well.

FOOD, WATER AND DOGGY BUSINESS

Food and water are important when taking your dog on a ferry.  Both before, after and during (not so much during) the crossing.  Our recommendation is to try and stick to your normal walking/feeding routine where possible.  If you’ve an early morning or late evening ferry crossing, ensure your dog is fed and watered in plenty of time to digest their food and also do any necessary toilet duties before the crossing.  Imagine returning to the car and there’s vomit or even worse, dog cack in the boot!  And, you’ve got a 12 hour drive in the hot European sun to get to your destination…the smell…doesn’t bare thinking about does it?  Eurgh!

WHAT TIME SHOULD I TRAVEL?

When travelling with your dog on a ferry it is important to consider what time of the day is best to travel.  If you’re travelling in the summer time, you may wish to consider a night time crossing when the temperatures are considerably lower.  If you do have to sail through the day when temperatures are at their hottest;  ask crew for a shaded spot where there is also good airflow…windows…ventilation…we’ve covered that already!

HAVE ESSENTIALS AT HAND

Remember to have all your ‘essentials’ at hand for when you’re taking your dog on a ferry.  Your ‘essentials’ list may differ from ours.  We always have the following essentials to hand in a LeanPac bag when travelling with Rosie;

lead (collar with id tag on dog, remove once secured in the crate)

water and food bowls

food and treats

the all important ‘poo’ bags

a towel, handy if it’s raining before or after your ferry crossing

wet wipes

If your dog is staying in the onboard kennels for the ferry crossing; give them their comfy bed, blankets and favourite toy.  You could also consider wearing an old jumper travelling to the ferry then place it in the kennel with your dog so they have your scent.  Please don’t leave raw hide chews in with your dog, or anything your dog could possibly choke on or strangle themselves with.  Always remove your dogs collar once secured in the crate to avoid snagging which could cause injury to your pooch.

These aren’t the ‘bear necessities’ but they are the ‘doggy essentials.

PASSPORTS FOR YOUR POOCH

This is an area that may change in the future due to (dare I say it)…Brexit!  If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, after 31 October 2019 the rules for travelling to EU countries with your pet will change.  Travelling from Ireland or UK to mainland Europe, it is important that you have the necessary travel documents.  You may never be asked to produce documentation when taking your dog on a ferry, but do you really want to take the risk?  Obtaining a Pet Passport is straight forward and can be done with your Vet.  A Pet Passport confirms that your dog has had all their necessary vaccinations.  Your dog will also be required to have a rabies vaccination before a Pet Passport can be issued.  Your dogs Pet Passport is valid for life (vaccines must be up to date, including a rabies booster every 3 years).

Lastly, but most importantly, before thinking about taking your dog on a ferry crossing, please consider if your dogs time away with you will be enjoyable for them.  Will the length of time in the car before, during and after the ferry crossing; be comfortable for them?  At your destination; is the accommodation suitable for them?  Will there be plenty of places to take them for walkies?  Where will they stay if you are going to places that are not dog friendly?  These are all factors to take into consideration before you make the decision to take your dog on holiday.

Rosie’s first journey on a ferry was for a boating holiday on the River Thames with Le Boat.  We knew before travelling that Rosie wouldn’t be left alone for more than an hour.  Thankfully there are lots of dog friendly restaurants, pubs and places along the River Thames.  Little miss Rosie was calm on the Stena Line Superfast X ferry, and she absolutely loved being on the Crusader by Le Boat.  And Rosie has since been back on a boat for our River Shannon Cruise with Emerald Star by Le Boat.  In our honest opinion, you should definitely consider taking your dog on a ferry and on holiday with you if are able to.  After all, they are part of the family!

I was so glad that we got to take Rosie on holiday with us and she behaved well considering it was her first holiday.  Rosie loved standing on the upper deck watching the swans as they swam by.

Do parents really expect their teens in highschool to pay for their own cars?

Its enraging when I hear my parents/parents in general tell their kids, who have their licenses to pay for a car yourself . Not even a split? A loan? These kids are still in highschool! Even after highschool in college, I just don't see how one can pay for even a cheap used car themselves unless they dedicate their life and save every penny for the damn car. People that age usually earn close to minimum wage, and if they spend all their time working instead of studying, that's all their ever going to make. Ex) my friend earns 9.25 hourly at a grocery store (he's worked there for a while so its not exact minimum wage), and works 40 hours a week. He is ALWAYS at work. At the end of the week, his checks are worth about 338 after taxes. A crappy used car is probably about 5000? I'm not fully sure. Someone that age would have to work 40 hours a week for quite a long time. Since they're teenagers, that would pretty much leave them no time for studying/doing homework and a social life in general. Don't parents want their children to perform well academically as well? Aside from financial issues of their own, why wouldn't a parent with a decent amount of money atleast agree to help their responsible teenager pay for a used or inexpensive car? I'm not suggesting brand new BMWs or mercades, but why not like an 06/07 used toyota or honda in good condition? Why not agree to help pay for.half or a smaller fraction of it? Hello, I Live in the UK, I am 22 years old and I have a Kia picanto which is my everyday car. My girlfriend is the main driver and owner and I am a named driver on the policy. Back in June I knocked into a stationary vehicle in a car park. I waited for the guy to come back and apologised straight away. (when its your fault in life own up) He was initially annoyed (fair enough) but went on to tell me that someone else had knocked into his car recently and caused 600 worth of damage (the other driver had sped off and hed already had a quote for the work). I cant remember the exact wording of the next bit - but it was understood that I would pay whatever it cost on top of that to fix the area (bumper / side corner area) We exchanged details. There were also photos taken at the time that I forwarded on (not sure if they were actually any help) Next I hear his insurance company has approached mine with a bill for 700. The total amount for fixing his car. I brought up the matter of the previous damage - couple of conversations between insurance companies - his asking him directly if there was any previous damage and him saying no. I told my insurance company that there was a friend with me (we were walking our dogs in the park) who had heard the whole conversation - in fact she was the one that took the pictures. She is a responsible, respectable person who was happy to make a statement. I was told by the insurance company that as it was someone who knew me - they couldnt be seen as an impartial person and they ended up paying the whole amount to his insurance company. I have just received my new insurance quote. Last year it was 437 and now that I have lost my 3 years no claims bonus (I have been driving for much longer but have only owned a small van for 3 years (practicality for my dogs muddy feet) and insurance starts again for vans) but I also have this 700 fault against my name this year. This has been a big complication for a few months, but back in October of 2008, I had a physical exam and my provider billed, what I assumed at the time, my primary insurance company (Horizon NJ Health). However, two years later, Horizon took back that money and my provider has been billing me for that physical back in 2008. I called Horizon and apparently they took back the money because I had another health insurance, and Horizon was no longer my primary. I had not known about my other health insurance company, Aetna student health care, since they never gave me any information or membership details, and I was automatically enrolled for it when I entered my university. When I contacted Aetna, they told me that they weren't the primary insurance company because they were just student health care. After several phone calls back and forth between Aetna and Horizon... I STILL haven't figured out who my primary insurance company is since they both claim to be the secondary insurance (and they seem to have endless reasons why the other is primary). I contacted my provider and asked them who they have listed as my primary, and they seem to be clueless about it too (when I spoke to the receptionist and asked, they kinda changed the topic). Straight from the start right after the accident my car kept dyeing out, so I had to drive it like a standard car with my feet on the gas and brake at the same time. So in the end , last I have heard there is a short somewhere so I took it to Spitfire and place that specializes in electrical problems and he told me my computer is bad. First of all the things my battery kept dyeing out, my car would not start up in the mornings,I took it to Auto zone and my battery was fat, swollen no good. Bought a new one, then I took it to a man at midas , he said I needed a valve cover gasket and he showed me my spark plugs we filled with oil, fixed that. Now Midas ran a scan and said I had either a bad map sensor or a short. Changed the map sensor the car is still barely running, so then another place said it was a short but had it for two weeks and could not find the short . I would like to know , if the guys Insurance is still on the hook for all the problems I have had with the car since the accident. Transitioning to online selling means growing pains for solar installers

When Sheryl Lane, COO at Earth Electric, first heard about consumer solar marketplace EnergySage, she was excited about the opportunity and signed up her company right away.

But after putting in more than 100 quotes and not landing any jobs, she wondered what was going wrong. Lane thought her most important selling point was missing from the platform: The personal touch of a local installer.

“It’s making it like some cheesy, non-personal experience, and it’s just not the way it should be done when you’re talking about such a large investment and people putting holes in your roof,” she said.

Earth Electric is a small installation company in San Jose, California, that employs six people and averages 300 kW in annual (mostly residential) installations. It’s been in business for almost a decade, and Lane credits its success to thorough industry knowledge and personalized attention to detail.

So the fact that EnergySage requires installers to communicate exclusively through its internal messaging system, without requiring the customer’s phone number or email address, is problematic for Lane’s business model. But EnergySage founder and CEO Vikram Aggarwal said it keeps contact information optional because consumers don’t want to be solicited. They want to be in the driver’s seat when they’re online shopping. And until the industry makes system prices more transparent and easier for consumers to search, they’ll continue to turn to marketplaces for easy, unobtrusive answers.

“Today, without EnergySage and without picking up the phone and talking to a solar contractor, there is no way to get prices,” Aggarwal said.

Aggarwal thinks the solar industry avoids publicizing detailed pricing and product information on installer websites for fear of losing competitive advantage. He compares the secrecy to shopping at his family’s clothing store in India, where there were no price tags and the sales associates set the price based on what they thought each shopper would be willing to pay.

“Solar is sold like we used to sell clothes in India, which bugs the hell out of me,” Aggarwal said.

As solar becomes more mainstream, Aggarwal sees more visitors come to EnergySage to scope out prices. Last year, he said the site had about five million U.S. visitors. This year he expects that number to double.

“The good news is that a lot of people are very interested in solar,” Aggarwal said. “But the bad news is it takes time for them to go from being interested to becoming actual customers.”

These quote seekers are a huge time suck for installers like Earth Electric putting in bids through marketplaces without any results.

To request a quote, consumers must fill out a profile on EnergySage that is reviewed by the marketplace for viability. Aggarwal said people who make it that far are pretty motivated consumers. Approved consumers are shared with EnergySage’s network of contractors. Up to seven installers can submit a bid on any one request.

“Yes, there are a lot of tire kickers. There are a lot of window shoppers. I don’t think the industry can get away from that. I think what the industry needs to do is get ready to serve window shoppers, because these window shoppers eventually will become customers,” Aggarwal said.

Rudy Wright, president of Wright-Way Solar Technologies based in East Texas, said he has landed one big job from EnergySage. He likes the tool because he knows consumers enjoy the ease of online marketplaces. But he and his colleagues have put in hundreds of hours of work sending proposals with little return on the time investment.

One problem he had with the marketplace was that installers had to submit bids through the EnergySage platform instead of their own solar modeling software like Aurora Solar.

“I raised nine kinds of hell with them because they kept calling me going, ‘Why aren’t you doing more bids?’ and I’m like, ‘Well guys, there’s 100 tire kickers a week in Texas, and I can’t do 100 bids in your software and still do my job that puts food on my table,’” Wright said.

EnergySage’s Quick Quote feature somewhat solved that issue by allowing installers to input a few pieces of information to generate a generic quote in a matter of seconds, but these quotes are general estimates rather than carefully tailored projections using sophisticated software. Wright uses Quick Quote and tells customers to call him for more information.

Wright said one of the things he likes about the platform is if a customer ends up buying solar through a different EnergySage contractor, he gets an email from EnergySage telling him so. In the past six months, Wright said his company sent out about 500 bids. He only recalls getting three to five emails back from EnergySage saying those customers opted to go with a different contractor. The other 495 customers didn’t go solar, at least through EnergySage.

“I kind of get a little bit of feedback to know OK, it’s not just me. They’re just not buying,” Wright said.

Marketplaces spread solar awareness

Azam Kazmi, president of YellowLite in Northeast Ohio, thinks online marketplaces are well worth his time. YellowLite has been signed up for both Pick My Solar and EnergySage since their inception.

“For the returns, they don’t ask for a whole lot,” Kazmi said. Compared to the cost of organically researching and following up with leads, he said these platforms charge less. He does admit organic leads are much more valuable and likely to end in a sale, but he likes the volume of leads these platforms generate, especially in a market like Ohio where solar is still not a kitchen table topic, or as competitive as Southern California.

Kazmi said he doesn’t get many leads from Pick My Solar yet, but the ones he has received have been more qualified than EnergySage’s.

“You’re dealing with fewer customers, so the close rate is better, versus EnergySage with more leads,” Kazmi said. He doesn’t have a problem with the lack of serious leads on EnergySage, though. “They’re leads. There’s not a whole lot that they could do, I think, on their end besides just saying that ‘Hey, we are a tool available.’”

Although Pick My Solar is also a consumer-facing marketplace, it serves a different purpose. Pick My Solar is meant to replace an installer’s sales and marketing team, so its rates for signed contracts are higher than EnergySage’s. Pick My Solar calls this distinction a “managed” marketplace versus the “unmanaged” consumer-to-installer communication on EnergySage.

Pick My Solar staff receives customer requests, creates quotes based on information in its installer database, designs systems using Aurora Solar, sends the customer three different quotes and then sends the signed customer contract to the winning contractor.

“We’ve already kind of done all of the legwork for [the installers]. When we close that sale, it’s basically plugging into their pipeline, into their operations team,” said Rex Kehoe, partnership director for Pick My Solar. “So it kind of bypasses all of that work that needs to be done and time, energy, money that’s spent up-front.”

EnergySage’s Aggarwal said Pick My Solar is not a true marketplace for consumers because its main function is to become an installer’s sales team. That may be so, but Kehoe said Pick My Solar is a better option for installers that don’t have the time or resources to spend sending many quotes to customers who may not be serious about buying.

Pick My Solar has focused its expansion efforts on partnering with certain utilities like Con Edison New York to serve their markets. It has about 100 vetted installers signed up on pickmysolar.com currently. EnergySage aims to serve a national consumer market and has 500 pre-screened installers on the site now.

Transitioning to online selling

Kazmi tasks entry-level employees at YellowLite with working the solar marketplaces. Once a customer gets closer to buying, he assigns an experienced sales consultant to the lead.

Although Quick Quote makes it easy to send that initial bid, winning a customer usually requires much more effort. Installation companies must continue to follow up with leads through the platform.

Aggarwal said contractors should have a salesperson dedicated to working EnergySage on staff, or at least someone who’s internet-savvy and can close deals on the platform. In its “Top 10 tips for installer success,” EnergySage advises installers to submit quotes within one hour of the request, avoid pushy sales tactics of door-to-door sales and make sure all messages to consumers are friendly and free of spelling errors.

Some smaller installation companies don’t have the resources to have an employee work the site full-time. Dara Bortman, VP of marketing and sales at Exact Solar in Philadelphia, said her company signed on to EnergySage around the time it launched, but hasn’t done much with it since then. The type of jobs that interest her company almost always reach EnergySage’s seven-bid limit before Exact Solar has a chance to submit a bid.

“They’re getting them really quickly,” Bortman said. “So if you don’t do that, and you go on and see the email an hour or two later, you look at [the potential job] and it’s full. You can’t even bid on it.”

Bortman said most of her company’s leads contact Exact Solar directly by phone or through its website. Often, customers find the company through its good ratings on Angie’s List and SolarReviews.com.

“Unless I have extra time, I’m not going to go to [marketplaces],” Bortman said.

Exact Solar is adding a second salesperson this year, so if the normal lead pipeline doesn’t keep both salespeople busy, Bortman said maybe they will spend some time on EnergySage.

Verification practices

Another reason Lane thinks Earth Electric didn’t win bids on EnergySage was she often found herself being outbid by unqualified contractors. She thinks third-party companies are using the site to find jobs, then subcontracting the work out on the cheap. Her company has been contacted by some of these companies offering to hire Earth Electric at 60 or 40 cents per watt.

“So these out-of-area ‘contractors’ are getting local installers who are hungry in a very competitive marketplace to install for them while they rake in the cash and aren’t even licensed to contract,” Lane said.

EnergySage said it is aware of the problem of verifying subcontractors and is working to develop more checks and balances to make sure all parties, contractors and subcontractors alike, are properly vetted.

“I understand it,” Aggarwal said. “We are trying to figure out how to address that through more transparency, while being respectful of the trend in the industry of this specialization.”

Aggarwal said many companies are now either focusing solely on sales or on installation, and subcontracting installations out or using tools like Pick My Solar for sales and marketing functions. He said the best way to fix the problem is through more transparency. Installation companies that perform all the labor in-house should call attention to that on their profiles. If a company tells EnergySage it uses subcontractors for the installation right away, Aggarwal said EnergySage will verify both the sales company and the subcontractor.

Playing with numbers

Exact Solar does most of its business in two states that are very different solar-wise: Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Pennsylvania has cheap electricity and low-priced SRECs, so the profit margin is thin. The added cost that must be paid to EnergySage for the sale could kill a job.

“If someone has a perfectly sunny roof that faces south, it can still work,” Bortman said. “But add in any variable like shade or orientation, and then you add in 12 cents a watt [for EnergySage], it can really make a difference and really make the numbers just not make sense.”

Add in the module price increase from the tariffs, and the system price would probably make the payback period longer than 12 years.

In New Jersey, solar makes a lot more financial sense. Electricity costs more, and SRECs are about $200 per MWh. Bortman is open to giving EnergySage another shot in the state if it makes sense in the future and Exact Solar employees see better returns on their time investment.

Making the numbers generate profit for the installers with the added payment to EnergySage can be tough because many consumers are just looking for the lowest price on the site instead of the best comprehensive deal to fit their needs. That type of “race-to-the-bottom” mentality hurts smaller contractors like Bortman and Lane.

“I’m not in it to be the lowest price,” Bortman said. “I’m not in it to be the highest price either, but, you know, I’m in it to be the highest quality. And maybe it’s hard to get that across in a bidding setting like that.”

Lane said she’s spoken with other local companies that have managed to clinch a couple of jobs through EnergySage by pricing jobs very low.

“That’s fine for a little while when you want to keep your employees working, but you can’t continue to grow and prosper…which is why we’re all in business,” Lane said. “We’re not here to be the low-price leader. As a local solar installer providing the level of customer support that we do, we can’t afford to be the Walmart of solar.”

In the still-young solar market, marketplaces like EnergySage can help spread awareness of the technology and the cost that’s missing from solar websites. For solar contractors who don’t like buying leads outright but need more jobs, solar marketplaces can serve an important role in their project pipeline. But EnergySage does hear the valid concerns of installers about verification and time commitment and is working to improve the experience for installers.
