so is it bad that I’m a black person and haven’t heard of anti rick Riordan until a few days ago? I only really read the books, and even though I’ve been on tumblr for a while I’ve never interacted with 99% of the pjo fandom

sorry i think i got this yesterday and didn't answer. so, first up, nearly all of your tumblr experience is dependent on who you follow. i've been aware of rr crit for years because of the people and topics i follow. there's a huge chunk of fandom that won't reblog or talk about the racism in rick's works because they believe "fandom should be fun". which it should be- a lot of my friends in pjo i made because of their talent and i enjoy their content. however, because of that attitude, rr crit gets silenced or passed around the same 15% of fandom that cares. so consider this: 🤔 who are you following? 🤔 are any of your pjo bloggers people of color? 🤔 do they only talk about certain topics? 🤔 how have they been involved, if at all, this past week?

regardless, you did mention not being that involved in tumblr pjo fandom. when it comes to pjo, tumblr is probably the most critical fansite. so just get more involved then! read up and follow, think and analyze. it's that simple.

finally, you asked if "it was bad because your black". it's not particularly bad, merely unfortunate. but sometimes it takes a little push- you're not the only one who needs it. alright, so since you're black, let's do a quick rundown of explicitly black characters in pjo and hoo: beckendorf, kelli, hazel, and hazel's mom, marie. in ten books, we've got (only) four explicitly black characters. here's what's so crazy about these characters:

beckendorf dies.

→ fandom wise, despite being kind and compassionate in canon, there are some fans who will display beckendorf as the angry, rough black guy stereotype

kelli is a monster.

hazel's from the 40s, says little about the romans involvement of the confederacy, is written like someone way more mature than her age (this is called adultification and is extremely prevalent with the treatment of black girls), and tossed into a love triangle with older teens. she is the only black girl in pjo/hoo but is given white and exotic features.

→ fandom wise, hazel is consistently white washed or simply ignored, despite being a main character in hoo

marie is a poor caricature of a voodoo witch, while being an awful and manipulative mother.

these are only the black characters- if we were to pinpoint the other marginalized groups rick disrespects with harmful stereotypes and blatant racism, this ask would be ridiculously long. in the books, it might not be able to get the issues so quickly, but when written out like this, it's very plain to see. 🤔 as a black person (or anyone nonblack reading this), consider how this could ever be considered good representation. but yeah, if you want to rectify this problem of not being aware of rr crit, then here:

📖 reread the books, and read the 'rr crit' tags

🤔 think about if you feel represented. but also consider that your experience may not be universal

🖱️ follow bloggers who openly critique rick. these are often blogs of color, but there's some that aren't

🔍 learn more about microaggressions, stereotyping, and representation. search what you don't understand, and find actual diverse books and authors

📝 write your own posts about problems you see

what the flying fuck is going on??? i wake up to see a warzone from 4 am and then also more of rick’s stupidity wtf

there are four things that i can think of:

1, the most pressing is that rick our beautiful diversity martyr released a statement about piper mclean and the racism that (definitely) went into his character. normally i would say, read and decide for yourself, but white ass rick is pathetic for not properly apologizing, fearing cancel culture, and not shutting up. he created pjo and with it has added racist stereotypes into his characters... @tsigililimclean, @pjolesbian, and @piperisgay have talked about it with multiple points, but i believe the later has gone to take a much needed break. it's ridiculous.

2, people are now figuring out that the actors who played annabeth and percy, daddario and learman, were in a relationship despite learman being 17/18 while daddario was 23/24. additionally they were engaged and he cheated on her??? unbelievably messy

3, rick's wife, becky, made weird ass cryptic tweets about past mistakes (racism 😐) and not harrassing the actors... like anyone would harrass CHILDREN for the racism and misogyny of the creators, but knowing this fandom, they absolutely will [I don't think I linked the tweets in the right order, but it's all the same thread so it doesn't matter]

4, it's tannabeth chase's birthday 😐

Hey, sorry if this is a weird question (and sorry for stalking your replies), but what do you mean by “the cloud fluff” (for Hazel’s hair)? I really love your blog by the way

Not that weird of a question. I'm referring to the left picture. It's typically very cartoon-y and in some instances is whatever, but when it comes to hazel, she's drawn with cartoon fluff while Annabeth has defined curls. (the gold eyes also suck but hnnng)

Curly/Kinky hair always has shape, whether it's type 4 or type 3, and its typically in Z or S-shape. It took me 4 seconds to draw the right image. It's not that hard to reference curly hair or an afro or whatever you want for Hazel. Hair has weight, texture, and form to it, and it's not just a bunch of cotton balls, is all I'm saying lol. A lot of black girls growing up get teased for their hair, and while some "soft puffy cloud I can touch" may seem poetic, it's not.

is there anything problematic about the first pjo series? obviously hoo is a shitstorm but i haven't really seen a lot of posts about pjo being problematic

everything rick has shat out of his brain has been poisoned by his problems. orig pjo... anon, please name at least 5 poc from that series. now how many of those are alive by hoo? how many of the rest are monsters or evil? .... anon. please recall the implied romantic relationship between luke and annabeth, in which he genuinely asks her "do you love me" and she hesitates to look at percy before saying no- the only other person she was having a romance with? dare i mention the entirely blond athena children 🤔 or the piss-poor adhd representation as the books continue? the ableism in all of rick's works? the unnecessary ostracization of children? the lack of conversation of ptsd and abuse? the "gods don't have dna" argument? these are just to name a few off the top of my head.

bigoted people don't suddenly become bigoted. the reason why there's all this sudden burst of color and diversity in hoo, is because there was none in the first books. "I haven't really seen a lot of posts-" that's because the original pjo series is clouded with nostalgia, and the problems in hoo are so gold-eye glaringly obvious, that we have to talk about it.

if you are not seeing posts or not recognizing patterns/problems in ALL of rick's work, you are A, not following the right people, B, not thinking hard enough or critically, C, need to be more aware, or D, probably a little bigoted yourself

so here's where she says it in moa:

Piper hadn’t studied him up close before. After hearing so much at Camp Half-Blood about Percy Jackson this and Percy Jackson that, she thought he looked…well, unimpressive, especially next to Jason. (MoA, ch 10)

there's a few things that need to be considered here:

1, percy hasn't done anything big in front of piper thus far. she, however, has seen jason in action, leading into:

2, piper has only heard about percy but has actually seen jason. there is a difference between seeing and hearing second-hand about amazing feats. all the praise piper has been hearing came from percy's friends and girlfriend, so there's bias. the funniest part about this, is that this is why fandom criticizes jason: we know he's done some sick shit, but that's only because we (and jason himself) are told about it second-hand. percy seems more impressive because we've actually seen/read about it

3, piper is a new demigod. she doesn't yet know the full capabilities of other demigods, especially children of the big 3. thus far, her only experience are with jason and thalia. she does not know the differences between a roman big 3 vs Greek, nor zeus vs poseidon. she does know that jason was tough shit and a leader in SPQR, a literal war camp for babies, while percy goes to a summer camp. she is also aware that zeus is the king of gods, and knows that jason is hera's favorite

4, the only thing percy's really done so far is knock out her best friend. percy tackles leo and knocks him out when leo's possessed. piper is now faced with this guy who's supposed to be a hero and cool guy, but he is immediately distrustful of her best friend and mindlessly tackles him without thinking. this does not paint percy in good lighting, for someone in piper's position

⭐ for piper, her thinking percy is unimpressive is completely reasonable. she did not read five books watching percy grow like fandom has. imagine your friends telling you about this celebrity that they're obsessed with. you kinda just go "oh cool! sounds so cool!" but that's about it. that is piper in this situation. as for if jason actually is better, that's an entirely different post lmao 💀

am i the only one who feels like Coach Hedge was almost completely unnecessary? Like, not to come on your blog and complain but I feel you would understand or be able explain why this angry war goat with zero personality traits was Rick's satyr of choice

Coach plays pretty well to say that not all nature spirits are calm or timid the way Grover initially was, plus he momentarily peeks into the life of an older satyr, with his whole “i was sent to wilderness because the council saw me fuck up and i’m getting old”.... But my whole issue is that most of the characters could’ve improved if Riordan just wrote a side story for them. Like, maybe he’s searching for Leo with Jason and Piper because those three are the kids he’s supposed to be protecting, and he has to act more serious to comfort those two, while  dealing with fucking up again, but LOL he’s also wearing a baby carrier and Chuck is teething. like... short stories really could make a character and build relationships that don’t have time in the main series but instead we got... nachoes. 

Anyway, here’s what Coach Hedge could’ve done (and this is primarily lost trio based as he was their protector but later applies to the rest of the scooby gang):

He could’ve played into the father role for the lost trio. Jason and Leo didn’t grow up with parents and probably could’ve used an actual adult to depend on, while Piper gets the attention she wanted, as well as her having an adult to talk to about her demigod issues 🥰 This works pretty well ESPECIALLY with a milder Millie to balance out Hedge’s roughness and play as a hesitant mothering figure

Found family with the lost trio is very important but like.... Hedge could’ve and should’ve been apart of that, if he explicitly mentioned having empathy bonds with them. After Jason dies in TBM, having Hedge off-handedly say “I’m getting too old for this, it’s too much” or something, would’ve been VERY cool to see, because it shows, A, sign that yes, being a demigod can wear down even the most excited souls, B, there was actually some love shared between them all over the past year, C, how satyrs react to the death of their protected

On the flip side, him on the Argo could’ve show the kids, that not even adults have it figured out and that literally no one has any clue what’s going on, and living longer doesn’t mean you’ll figure it out. And like, the only reason why this doesn’t really work is cause no one paid too much attention to Hedge anyway so... dunno

Could’ve served as a better mentor to the kids. Idk, scene where he trains Piper or teaches her about his dumb healing Gatorade. Probably could’ve did more with Frank, but that seemed a little last minute anyway. hazel probably could’ve had some fun asking about horses and nature and horses and magic and horses and horses and hor-

In all honesty, Hedge could’ve been left home at CHB, and there could’ve been points where the Lost Trio IM’d him 🤔 like that scene in HoH where they figure out that the prophecy was for them, could’ve just had Hedge figuring it out with them. At the somber moment, when they realize someone is probably going to die, Hedge interrupts, a little pale in the face, with some “YEAH BUT NOT IF I KILL GAEA FIRST” and then they slowly laugh, Piper meaningful thanking him with her eyes or some shit i dunno, but like, something about those three feeling frustrated and calling back Hedge to talk, and while he’s totally useless, it always made them feel better

So.... I also typed that last point knowing that in TLH, literally every time Hedge speaks, Jason gets annoyed, and it’s the funniest thing ever. Hedge would say something, and Jason would go 😐 and say the equivalent of “That’s Great, Gleeson.” I just think that’s a funny dynamic considering it’s Jason who doesn’t have much of a problem with people but DAMN when Coach speaks, he’s all 😐🙂😐

I forgot what this ask was saying, but yeah, it’s probably just to contrast Grover, but like, idk Hedge could’ve been interesting... That short story would be hella cool too, cause while they’re sad about losing their friend, he looks down at his baby and thinks about losing Chuck and Mellie, and how Hedge felt Leo die cause of a link, and he just says something like  “have I ever told you guys how I ended up at Wilderness? The real story.” .... something like that, you know?

imo caleo would've been good together if not for the way they were written, leo shouldn't have had to rely on a love interest to gain confidence and feel accepted

any relationship could be good if you write it well enough and it's not used as a main plot device in an adventure series. caleo was not good because it squashed away leo's potential arc and made his motivations feel shallow, while also pushing the worst tropes ever onto him. calypso was always a minor character and probably shouldn't have been brought back to hoo, but when she was brought back, she was morphed into a "reward" and "goal" for leo. in botl, calypso proved to be a learning point for percy, while caleo's introduction was a mere pit stop to take up pages and shove him into a relationship.

now, while the need to put all the teens into relationships was ridiculous, it's not completely unfounded. teenagers date. things get sloppy and jealous and lonely and confusing. however, we already had that reflected in jason/piper/leo's previous dynamic (which was solved anyway), and jason/piper/reyna, or even percy/annabeth/AndAnyGirlHeTalkedTo 😭. it did not need to be amplified in the seven. the thing about teens dating... is that most of them don't. lots of kids don't date because of intrinsic and extrinsic reasons. that's so incredibly normal.

sure, all his friends were dating, and that is off-putting, but pushing leo into a relationship? wack. there was no growth there. nothing was learned or developed (except for maybe my irritation 😔). all we got from this is that you need to be in love to feel happy and complete. all your problems will go away if you meet The One. that's not exactly a message to send impressionable middle schoolers. in short: caleo would've been fine if leo had gained his confidence through friends and learning his own self worth, rather than being used as a cheap and quick romance as a plot device for two characters who didn't need it.

what social media would each member of the lost trio use most and what would they do on it

dude i thought wattpad was social media up until 8th grade, I'm so bad at this but:

Leo: Made really strange vines that all flopped, except for one which boosted his ego, and he became annoying. Vine died and he moved to YouTube. from there he makes extremely niche videos that only 5 people would get. Random 8 second clips, bass-boosting songs, obscure memes- but also the occasional vlog, like "Hey Guys, So uhhhh Just Made a Jetpack if You wanna See lmao". However, he does have a TikTok and he does exactly what you expect him to do in TikTok. A sizeable following so you probably have seen his face a few times but not exactly that well known. Leo is also known for going on Reddit a fair amount, for both cool and helpful reddits but also the weirdo ones. He trolls people on any site tho

Piper: Isn't actually into social media that much. Has the usual crap but opens it about once a month. People follow her on Insta because of her dad, but she barely posts. When she does post it typically soars in likes. Her Finnsta is just making fun of Leo and he still doesn't know yet, (He'd get huffy and be like '😠 they made another post' and she goes 'oh really? 🤔 that's so craaaazy'). She has a secret Tumblr that was made for her aesthetic stuff and rants but then she forgot it existed and it hasn't been touched in 3 years. The type of person to tweet a single sentence and leave while everyone loses it

Jason: He has a VSCO account cause he likes the pictures. Pretty into Instagram but only because he starts scrolling and then loses track of time. He does InstaLive or whatever when the three of them do stupid shit. He also uses Snap a lot and sends annoying morning streaks (Jason: gm, beautiful day 😊 Leo: *sends pic of the ceiling with his hair peeking out at the bottom* shut up ❤️ Piper: OPENED). People thirst follow him but then he posts shit like puppies or something he saw on a walk. Jason takes an obscene amount of selfies with his friends but he also uses the dog filter. He turned off Insta's comments cause people kept calling him a furry and wolf kinnie.
