asoiaf quotes (1/?)
“You are the gentle sex,” said Lord Karstark, with the lines of grief fresh on his face. “A man has a need for vengeance.”

“Oberyn wanted vengeance for Elia. Now the three of you want vengeance for him. I have four daughters, I remind you. Your sisters. […] If you should die, must El and Obella seek vengeance for you, then Dorea and Loree for them? Is that how it goes, round and round forever? I ask again, where does it end?” Ellaria Sand laid her hand on the Mountain’s head. “I saw your father die. Here is his killer. Can I take a skull to bed with me, to give me comfort in the night? Will it make me laugh, write me songs, care for me when I am old and sick?” - A Dance with Dragons, The Watcher

"How is it that you did not wed?" Jaime asked him.
"Why, I went to Tarth and saw her. I had six years on her, yet the wench could look me in the eye. She was a sow in silk, though most sows have bigger teats. When she tried to talk she almost chocked on her own tongue. I gave her a rose and told her it was all that she would ever have from me." Connington glanced into the pit. "The bear was less hairy than that freak, I'll----"
Jaime's golden hand cracked him across the mouth so hard the other knight went stumbling down the steps. His lantern fell and smashed, and the oil spread out, burning.
"You are speaking of a highborn lady, ser. Call her by her name. Call her Brienne."
Connington edged away from the spreading flames on his hands and knees. "Brienne. If it please my lord." He spat a glob of blood on Jaime's foot. "Brienne the Beauty."

DAENERYS TARGARYEN APPRECIATION WEEK Day 2: Themes/Tropes
Longing for Love, Home and Family
She could smell home, she could see it, there, just beyond that door, green fields and great stone houses and arms to keep her warm, there. — Daenerys IX, AGOT "I was looking for a house with a red door, but by night all the doors are black." — Daenerys VI, ASOS In her dream they had been man and wife, simple folk who lived a simple life in a tall stone house with a red door. — Daenerys II, ADWD She was the blood of the dragon. She could kill the Sons of the Harpy, and the sons of the sons, and the sons of the sons of the sons. But a dragon could not feed a hungry child nor help a dying woman’s pain. And who would ever dare to love a dragon? — Daenerys II, ADWD
... and finding it eventually. ❤️

Arya being Ironic
“Oh.” Arya did not know what else to say. “Why did she jump in the sea, though?”
“Her heart was broken.”
Sansa would have sighed and shed a tear for true love, but Arya just thought it was stupid. She couldn’t say that to Ned, though, not about his own aunt. “Did someone break it?”
He hesitated. “Perhaps it’s not my place . . .”
“Tell me.”
He looked at her uncomfortably. “My aunt Allyria says Lady Ashara and your father fell in love at Harrenhal—”
“That’s not so. He loved my lady mother.”
“I’m sure he did, my lady, but—”
“She was the only one he loved.”
Oh Arya, you are just as much of a romantic as your sister Sansa, lol
I really love the moments where Arya is being a total child, in so many ways she is trying to be more grown up and is wiser than her years because of having to experience so much so young, but every now and then GRRM reminds us that she is indeed a little girl, still with little girl sensibilities, understanding, and full of confusing and conflicting feelings.

"The northern girl. Winterfell’s daughter. We heard she killed the king with a spell, and afterward changed into a wolf with big leather wings like a bat, and flew out a tower window."
The Hound poured a cup of wine for Arya and another for himself, and drank it down while staring at the hearthfire.
“The little bird flew away, did she? Well, bloody good for her. She shit on the Imp’s head and flew off.”

MARTELL WEEK - day O3
⤻ favorite moment
“I will not fight you,” Princess Meria told Rhaenys, “nor will I kneel to you. Dorne has no king. Tell your brother that.” “I shall,” Rhaenys replied, “but we will come again, Princess, and the next time we shall come with fire and blood.” “Your words,” said Princess Meria. “Ours are Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. You may burn us, my lady...but you will not bend us, break us, or make us bow. This is Dorne. You are not wanted here. Return at your peril.” Thus queen and princess parted, and Dorne remained unconquered.

There was no place for him in Winterfell, no place in King’s Landing either. Even his own mother had not had a place for him. The thought of her made him sad. He wondered who she had been, what she had looked like, why his father had left her. […] Something dark and dishonorable, or else why was Lord Eddard too ashamed to speak of her? – A Game of Thrones, Jon V

"Lady Sharis Footly, the widow of Tumbleton, achieved a different sort of fame by her efforts to restore that shattered town. Ruling in the name of her infant son (half a year after Second Tumbleton, she had given birth to a lusty dark-haired boy whom she proclaimed her late lord husband’s trueborn heir, though it was far more likely that the boy had been sired by Bold Jon Roxton), Lady Sharis pulled down the burned shells of shops and houses, rebuilt the town walls, buried the dead, planted wheat and barley and turnips in the fields where the camps had been, and even had the heads of the dragons Seasmoke and Vermithor cleaned and mounted and displayed in the town square, where travelers paid good coin to view them (a penny for a look, a star to touch them)."

She knelt before the Mother. “My lady, look down on this battle with a mother’s eyes. They are all sons, every one. Spare them if you can, and spare my own sons as well. Watch over Robb and Bran and Rickon. Would that I were with them.”

I'll go to sleep, she told herself, and when I wake it will be a new day, and the sky will be blue again. The fighting will be done and someone will tell me whether I'm to live or die.
