The head bounced off a thick root and rolled. It came up near Greyjoy’s feet. Theon was a lean, dark youth of nineteen who found everything amusing. He laughed, put his boot on the head, and kicked it away.
“Ass,” Jon muttered, low enough so Greyjoy did not hear.
AGOT, Bran I
Moat Cailin has fallen, Reek realized then, only no one has seen fit to tell them. He rubbed his mouth to hide his broken teeth, and said, “I need to speak with your commander.” “Kenning?” The guard seemed confused. “He don’t have much to say these days. He’s dying. Might be he’s dead. I haven’t seen him since … I don’t remember when …” “Where is he? Take me to him.” “Who will keep the door, then?” “Him.” Reek gave the corpse a kick. That made the man laugh. “Aye. Why not? Come with me, then.”
ADWD, Reek II
Two kicks, two different audiences, two very different reactions. Both intended to seem careless and flippant, the first earning him contempt, the second a laugh.
And yet both of those kicks seem like a part of a character he puts on:
Theon Greyjoy, ward of Lord Stark, the self-fulfilling prophecy, catering to the bias against him.
And then Reek, playing the Prince of the Iron Islands and invoking Theon Greyjoy the ward.
That boy has spent every moment of his life, from the time he was taken away from his home, on stage. Always watched, always trying to fulfil expectations. He definitely knows how to please his audience.

jory cassel, who checks all the boxes of an IDEAL knight but is not one, being killed by jamie, who has forsaken every aspect of ideal knighthood and yet is actually a knight, is something that can be so impactful... especially when you consider the other person who fulfills this dichotomy is brienne, who he falls in love with.
jamie can only kill or fall in love with his former/ideal self. he cannot simply allow it to exist......

Their children were everywhere underfoot, and the yard teemed with their cows, sheep, and chickens. “Who are all these folk?”
“My people,” Edmure answered. “They were afraid.”
Man GoT really turned Edmure into some buffoon and took away every single redeeming quality, act of kindness or compassion that he had in the books.

Masterpost Targaryen/Stark parallels and contrasts in AGOT
This post is a list of the parallels/contrast I found during the reread in AGOT alone (I’ll do one for each books).
The first one I found was the Direwolves and the dragons being born which bookends a game of thrones. the Direwolves were born in the snow/ice while the dragons were born the sand/fire, all of them are born of the dead, only death can pay for life is probably illustrated there with both species.
Viserys says: “the dragon remembers” in the first Dany chapter about the stolen throne by Robert and the rebellion which later parallels with “The north remembers” when talking about the red wedding and the death of (some of) the Starks.
the Starks and Dany both have anti slavery values: We can see it in Dany’s chapter’s (this feels obvious) but also with Ned when he said that about Jorah “so the slaver has become a spy,’ Ned said with distaste. He handed the letter back ‘I would rather he became a corpse’  (I cheered)“ which is followed by Arya “he should have killed the masters”.
The description of the traits of blood of the dragon and the wolf blood are actually extremely similar : reckless and passionate and a bit chaotic and independant.
The way they talk about the dragon skulls (which are Targaryen thing) as if they are still alive and watching in King's landing and the way they talk about the dead men in a crypts (which is a Stark thing) as if they were alive and watching in Winterfell.
The parallels/contrast between Viserys and Ned’s death. Both of them dies a traitor’s death by execution but only one of them is guilty.
I think that’s a stretch but Dany plunge her entire body into the fire to create life and Jon plunging his hand into the fire to save a life might be put in here.
Cat’s quote which makes the Targaryens and the Stark direct parallel explicit : “if you lose, there is no hope for us. They say there is naught but stone at the Heart of Casterly Rock,Remember the fate of Rhaegar’s children”.Two houses seemingly destroyed by Tywin Lannister with horrifying means with secret heirs and children still alive all over the world with magical creature maybe able to change the outcome of the war for the dawn.
The parallel/contrast between Rhaenys and Arya, two little girls who got Balerion the Cat and the first victims of Tywin, (the parallel is done by Varys), Arya being the one saved by Jon’s gift (who is technically both of theirs brothers) and her knowledge of the tunnels created by the Targaryens (and she feels protected by the dragon’s skulls).
Robb being crowned king and the next chapter Dany getting the symbol of her queenship and essentially being crown queen in her own right with the birth of the dragons a chapter away from each other
There are a lot of Fire (for Targaryens) and Ice (For the Starks) symbolisms, although some characters from said house are associated with other elements (Arya and water, which is what happen when Fire melt ice so this feel relevant to her character in general but this isn’t about that) :
In the first Dany chapter again: her brother had often said that it was never too hot for a Targaryen. “ours is the house of the dragon” he would say, “The fire is in our blood”
In the Second Cat chapter:: Ned could never abide the heat, the Starks were made for the cold: “Even now, he was a Stark of Winterfell, rage and grief froze hard inside him” which links the Stark explicitely with the cold.
I might do a seperate post on Dany and Arya’s arcs specifically (in the entire series) paralleling each other sometimes. We’ll see.

something about eddard xiii is changing my brain chemistry upon reread. ned coming to see robert paralleling him finding lyanna; the three kingsguard outside, ascending a tower, finding them in a pool of blood, begging for ned to protect their children. lyanna’s voice echoing in ned’s head as robert speaks. ned reassures him him was never as bad as aerys, but even robert knows he is not a good king. ned not being able to tell robert the truth of his children and of cersei, he doesn't want his friend to die in more pain than he already is. robert saying ned he was always a bad liar, when that is so far from the truth.
the way ned had no time to grieve for robert before. he wishes to go to the godswood and pray for him and to the gods. he knows people will whisper that ned had betrayed his best friend who had more than a brother to him, but there's no time and its enough that the gods will know he didn't, at least not this time. he cries as he writes to stannis, and refuses to take action when renly offers his men; let robert die thinking joffrey tommen and myrcella are his children, and the comfort of ned's promise to protect them. the way ned died not long after robert did, the way mercy for robert killed him as well. man.

Theon "Sherlock" Greyjoy...
There had to be two or more, he decided. While the woman was entertaining Drennan, the others freed the wolves. Theon called for a torch and led them up the steps to the wallwalk. He swept the flame low before him, looking for … there. On the inside of the rampart and in the wide crenel between two upthrust merlons. “Blood,” he announced, “clumsily mopped up. At a guess, the woman killed Drennan and lowered the drawbridge. Squint heard the clank of chains, came to have a look, and got this far. They pushed the corpse through the crenel into the moat so he wouldn’t be found by another sentry.”
ACOK, Theon VI
...and Theon Poirot
“A drunk,” Ryswell declared. “Pissing off the wall, I’ll wager. He slipped and fell.” No one disagreed. But Theon Greyjoy found himself wondering why any man would climb the snow-slick steps to the battlements in the black of night just to take a piss.
[...]
Then, before the day was done, a crossbowman sworn to the Flints turned up in the stables with a broken skull. Kicked by a horse, Lord Ramsay declared. A club, more like, Theon decided.
ADWD, A Ghost in Winterfell
Unlike the corpse/head kicking this doesn't feel performative to me, so I'm guessing it's a trait of Theon's to play private eye. He's clever in many ways (and utterly stupid in some), and his curious mind is never, ever repressed no matter what happens to him - is there anything equivalent to detectives or investigators in Westeros?

thinking about asoiaf's lost/forgotten kids, and i don't think i've ever seen much commented about euron's bastards? i mean, they are super minor characters, but there are other super minor characters that are more frequently mentioned and discussed, like weasel (love her). personally i think about those kids often. we know euron brings three of them to the kingsmoot, and one of them (a 10 year old boy) actually appears on page in affc, telling victarion that euron wants to talk to him. i've seen a lot of people who think they've also had their tongues cut, but i think that's because the text refers to both euron's bastards and euron's crew of mutes as mongrels and that creates some confusion. i don't know if the other two are older or younger or where they are from on their mothers side, but i think that and their relationship with their father could be some really interesting points to explore. i am of the opinion that the other two are older than the 10 year old, it would make sense for euron to bring sons that are almost adults to the kingsmoot (?) but that's about it lol. where the hell are those kids now. is euron going to use them as blood sacrifices? probably, he doesn't give a shit about them. are they aware of their situation? is any of them anything like their father? honestly i don't think they're going to be relevant in the following books but it's still entertaining to think about it.
