I have been rewatching ASOUE Netflix and re-appreciating how it's a wonderful, lovingly-crafted, heartfelt rendition of its source material. With every new half-baked adaptated remade reimagined reboot that gets spat into the media cycle, I really want to believe ASOUE was something special. it was so clever and funny and never felt childish or dismissive.
I know there are people out there who didn't enjoy it (though god forbid that I actually read as far as their reasonings why.. I immediately scrolled away whenever I saw such a disagreeable take) but I hope those people can at least admit it the same earnest spirit as the source material.
not to say I don't have my gripes with the Netflix series, love it dearly but of course there's things I would change, but as a whole it is so solid, so entertaining, exceptionally faithful to the books and darkly comedic without being overwhelmingly depressing.
We really had it so good. If you haven't watched since its initial release, I definitely recommend revisiting.

Yeah I am a little disappointed that Netflix didn’t show Dewey descending from the ceiling in The Penultimate Peril like he does in the books

Who is the possible survivor of the fire to which the Snicket File refers?
Short theory:
The sentence on page 13 states: "Because of the evidence discussed on page nine, experts now suspect that there may in fact be one survivor of the fire, but the survivor's whereabouts are unknown".
It can't be Quigley Quagmire, as the file explicitly states "one survivor," not "another survivor." Given that Isadora and Duncan Quagmire's survival is public knowledge, we're not discussing the Quagmire mansion fire. The clues point to the Baudelaire mansion fire and the alleged arsonist, Lemony Snicket, who has also been declared dead. This leads us to believe that Lemony, initially presumed dead and guilty, had his death status questioned by experts. Kit and Jacques Snicket, as shown in LSTUA and TCC, are on a mission to clear Lemony's name and confirm his survival, despite their grave doubts.
The Snicket File, aptly named "Snicket Fires" by Hall, underlines their fight against their brother's fiery accusations.

My least favorite thing about the ASOUE Netflix series is how they made Isadora have a crush on Klaus. I mean they picked the most lesbian coded girl in the history of childrem's literature (i'm exagerating everyone knows this is Dorothy's tittle but still) and were like: but what if instead of being compared to Sapho she liked a boy?
And people were super fine with it.

Iconic aro moments in literature... to me.
There's not a whole lot of explicit positive representation of aromanticism in media. However there are sometimes stories that so heavily deprioritize or complicate romance that I have jokingly started calling them aro icons even if none of the characters are actually aro, and now I am putting some of them in a poll.
Tragically the poll text limits are too short, so check under the cut for full descriptions + the poll itself.
Tiffany Aching getting hassled by a guy who won't take no for an answer so hard it's literally the end of the world until she uses a kiss to vaporize him. (Wintersmith). TBH most successful Discworld romances also feel like they were hastily tacked on out of obligation making the whole series iconically aro to me.
Wolf 359 being all about personhood, communication, and connection while the writers repeatedly stated no characters were being written to be romantically interested in each other. (Wolf 359)
Klaus and Violet each getting an obligatory love interest for one book before said love interest vanishes to get eaten by a sea monster off screen. (ASOUE)
Everything Katniss Everdeen ever says but especially responding to a love triangle by thinking "I can live just fine without either of them" (Hunger Games)
None of Father's sacrifices doing forbidden necromancy for romantic love and the only non-human entity with a romantic partner being a huge asshole and unrepentant villain (FMA)
Everything about Murderbot also but especially the "Thiago thinks you love my mother" "Not the way he thinks" exchange. Debated including this since I think SecUnit is intentionally aro but the poll would not be complete without it. (Murderbot)
Michael Tate building strong and entirely platonic best friendships with people he could potentially be romantically attracted to and writing everyone he's ever met letters when he thinks he's going to die and ending them all with "I love you" (Greater Boston)
I know I have joked about more things being huge wins for the aros but it is too early in the morning and I can't remember them. Please give me your own unintentionally iconic aro moments.

Hi! Do you have any lgbt+ hcs for the unfortunate gen? :) 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️[I’ve read a few of your Dunklaus fics so I know there’s at least them :)]
Hi Ven ! I've thought about this somewhat, so I have an answer for you.
I think Klaus is bisexual, my reasoning being I like him both with Duncan and Fiona. He has the opportunity for such interesting dynamics with both, though as you and anyone who follows me knows, Dunklaus is my favourite.
Duncan I would headcanon as gay - no, I don't think he had any romantic feelings towards Violet. I think she perhaps liked him, but he probably didn't even notice. Duncan can be a bit clueless in the romance department, I think. Which is why the thought of him and Klaus stumbling around trying to admit their feelings is pretty hilarious to me.
For Violet, I'm really not sure at all. I would say she's maybe bisexual or something? But I've never really been sold on a headcanon for her sexuality and can only say I really, really love her with Quigley, but also love the idea of her with Isadora or Fiona. Violet, I think, would fall for someone without any notice of their gender.
On that note, Quigley is my favourite unfortunate gen character and I have so many headcanons about them. Firstly, I really, really like the headcanon that they are non-binary, which I wish was more popular. I could make a whole separate post at some point on this headcanon (which I might?) so I'll leave that there. Anyway, Quigley's sexuality.... I would say they are just attracted to women, but I totally respect the bisexual Quigley headcanon I see quite a bit. Since we don't see them show an interest in anyone besides Violet in canon, it's pretty hard to say?
Moving on to Isadora, I headcanon her resolutely as lesbian. Honestly, I'm usually very flexible and not bothered about headcanons, but to me this is, like, canon. I mean, come on, Sunny calling her Sappho during their first meeting? AM I MEANT TO READ NOTHING INTO THAT, DANIEL HANDLER??? I love her femslash pairings. Her with Violet, or Fiona? Absolutely iconic and should be worshipped by everyone because to me she IS a lesbian. Loves women . Her and Quigley bond over it.
Oh, and I know the popular headcanon that Isadora is transgender - male to female - and I've made a short post about that before. Love it ! Totally see this being canon and would love to read about it more in fanfiction. Though I may not explicitly state it, it can be happily assumed that Isadora is transgender in any fanfiction I write for ASOUE!
Lastly(?), Fiona ! Not 100% sure here, I don't really have one - but perhaps like Violet, gender isn't something that really comes into account for her when she starts dating. I could see her definitely having a crush on Violet and love when I get the ship on my feed. (Thanks to whichever mutual is reblogging them, I can't remember who you are.)

Hello! 👋 What do u hc the clothing styles of the unfortunate gen kids as?/what sort of clothes do u think r their favourites? 🧥👔🧣
Unfortunate Gen Clothing's Styles/What Clothes They Wear Headcanons:
Violet: If she's not wearing her iconic dress (which either came from the 1950s or 1960s no one really knows) or her skirt (goes down to her knees, worn with white tights), she will be wearing purple in some way in her clothes (socks, shirt, jacket, etc). Violet also prefers to wear jeans and other durable material trousers with her blouses and shirts. The dress and skirt are the two exceptions.
Klaus: 100% dresses semi-formally. He likes bowties and regular ties, button vests (not sweater vest, thank you very much), chinos and dress pants and pleated pants, button-down shirts, and blazers. That's not to say Klaus doesn't have casual wear; he has a few windbreakers and jeans and regular short-sleeves shirt. He just won't be seen wearing those a lot in comparison.
Sunny: Haven't thought much on Sunny (given she is a baby throughout ASOUE), but I like to think as she grows up, she mainly wears casual clothes. Things like cargo pants, jeans, and shirts with graphics on them. Things that are loose on the body, but not too loose. Oh, that, and hair scrunches (yellow).
Duncan: Enjoys wearing wool/knit sweaters, as well as cardigans and sweater-vests (match with long button-downs) in cool weather a la early spring and fall. For warm spring and early summer weather, he wears striped short sleeves shirt or short button-down shirts, sometimes with a hoodie jacket with a zipper if it's on the colder side. For winter, he'll wear a strong windbreaker hoodie over whatever he's wearing. Regarding trousers, Duncan likes jeans, khakis, corduroys, and sweatpants (that last one is for home though).
Isadora: While she has wool/knit sweaters, she only wears them if it's a very cool/cold day that will remain cool/cold throughout. She mainly wears blouses with the puffy short sleeves, and sweatshirts with graphics on them. She's also the sort to wear double shirts; long-sleeve underneath and short-sleeve on top. On occasion, she will wear dress and skirts; Isadora prefers black dresses and skirts of any style and lengths. Most of the time, she wears Capri pants because she likes showing off her socks.
Quigley: Unlike his siblings, he wears rollnecks/turtlenecks. And unlike his siblings, he tends to cover up. He mainly wears long button-down shirts and sweatshirts, and if he has to wear a short-sleeve shirt, he'll wear a jacket over them. Trousers-wise, he wears sweatpants, jeans, drawstrings, and parachutes. When Quigley wears either his dress or skirt (the dress has long sleeves), he has to wear leggings with them. The only time he'll show his legs and arms is when at the beach because that would make him stand out a lot.
Carmelita. Mainly wears clothes of the color pink, white, and red especially pre-canon and in canon events. Her style here is poofy; she has to wear a poofy dress with ribbons or skirt, like a ballerina skirt (not tutu) or poodle skirt. She never wore pants until TPP. And in post-canon, Carmelita starts to wear more Capris and Pedal pushers (similar to Capris; they go higher up the lower calf), as well as wearing different colors (she got to change it up).
Fiona: Nautical Style Clothes(TM) is her main style. Anything that looks like it's something a sailor or navy person would wear or has a strong sailor/navy vibe to it (think sailor dresses, or the sailor blouse, or the most mainstream of them all, bell-bottoms), she has to get. Having live in a submarine all her life, Fiona finds herself wanting something that reminded her of her former home of the Queequeg. That said, she does has some non-Nautical clothes; overalls, jumper dresses, and rompers.
Friday: Having to wear only white on the Island, living on the mainland and seeing her options has Friday going over the moon with possibilities and combinations. Her main style in the first year in the Land of Districts is a colorful overalls (red, orange, or purple) or colorful denims (red, pink, sky blue), with a sweater (pastel colors usually) or sweatshirt with either her bright yellow or green sneakers.
Beatrice Baudelaire II: I also haven't given lot of thought for Bea II. I do like her wardrobe in Netflix ASOUE.The beret is something I really dig. I like to think she has more in different colors, like grey and white.
I hope you enjoy my surprisingly long answer, dear anon!

Into the woods if you feel up to it
Thanks for the ask, darling!!
Just answered for asoue here
What We Do In the Shadows
OTP: oh it's gotta be Nadja/Lilith. What can I say; I'm a sucker for lesbians, Lucy Punch, and bitter exes. They really have it all <3
Favourite canon pairing: Nadja/Laszlo of course. Though in recent series they haven't really been getting any screen time so my love for them has been dying somewhat. I hope they get some good scenes in the last season!
Worst pairing ever: Nadja and Colin. Why did they do that. Why did they do that. Why did they do that. Why did they-
Guilty pleasure pairing: I WAS HALFWAY THROUGH WRITING AN 'OH I DON'T REALLY HAVE ONE' PASSAGE WHEN I REALISED I DO. I FUCKING DO AND NO ONE WILL KNOW WHAT I'M ON ABOUT BUT HERE GOES ANYWAY!! Okay so you know in that one episode when Nadja was on the council and they had a fancy banquet and Nandor was in his depression nap and everyone thought he was dead?? Well one of the sexy vampire ladies that turned up was Carmilla (famous vampire from the vampiric novel, Carmilla) and I ABSOLUTELY wanted her and Nadja to get together. There it is, that's the guilty-pleasure ship, yet another one-episode character but somehow worse than Lilith because Carmilla only had like three lines
A pairing you want to see more: Nadja/The Guide!! The Guide is throwing herself at my girl and she is absolutely clueless. Icon <3
That pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: Nadja/Jenna. Really not into it, she gave me a VERY strong maternal vibe and I am. Not a fan of shipping them. Again, you do you, but like. Not for me
Favourite non-romantic pair: Nadja & Guillermo! I wish we'd given more focus to their dynamic earlier in the show, they' 've always had the potential to be really great bitchy friends, but we DID get her going absolutely fucking feral to save his life, risking hers in the process, so... it's a win <3
Into the Woods
I have basically never thought about shipping these characters so this is going to be fun
OTP: Baker's Wife and Cinderella. Straight up, I think it would be really fun and also the whole "when you know you can't have what you want what's the profit in wishing?" vs "how can you know what you want til you get what you want and you see if you like it?" I'm just saying, their little late night heart-to-hearts could have turned into something fruity
Favourite canon pairing: Cinderella's Prince/Baker's Wife is literally just funny. Like girlie what was even going through your head there
Worst pairing ever: Rapunzel/Rapunzel's Prince. I'm sorry, she was locked in a tower for her entire life, then abandoned by her mother for the horrible crime of making a friend (and fucking him, but still, that was your fault too buddy-boy), and he has the audacity to complain that she cries too much?? She wandered alone in the desert with newborn twins thinking that you were DEAD. It's been less than a year! My girl had TRAUMA and she deserved better
Guilty pleasure pairing: the Witch and the Stepmother. Do they ever interact? No. Do I think it'd be super funny to pair up the only villainous women just because? Absolutely. They can start an "I was a bad mother but also I love my children with my whole heart" club and make each other worse
A pairing you want to see more: Florinda and Lucinda with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, respectively. First of all I think it's funny that it would fulfil the whole 'good marriage' thing, but also I just think the stepsisters get a really rough deal and someone needs to get those princesses out of there before the aspiring Henry VIII's get on to their second wives
That pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: Baker/Baker's Wife. I'm sorry, there is no good option here. She cheated, he undervalued her at every turn, yells in her face because she just wants to help, and then has this ~wonderful realisation~ that "wow, maybe I should work with my wife!" before going straight back to his "you stay here and do nothing Because I Said So" mindset in act two. Mans has anger issues and I don't like it. Also, again, she cheated. There is no good angle to this relationship
Favourite non-romantic pair: Cinderella and the Baker. They really said "well, that was an awful lot of trauma none of us asked for. Guess we're sticking together and raising a family of two orphans and your infant son that you had with your wife (who's now dead) who cheated with my husband (who's telling people I'm dead)". Like that's so fuckin iconic.
Wait but ALSO the Witch and Rapunzel??? That's a fucking fascinating dynamic right there, like the Witch does love her! She absolutely unequivocally does! But also she doesn't know how to love her, and it is SO endlessly interesting to me and always will be
Send me a fandom and I'll answer these questions!

Did I solve the mystery of Dr. Sebald?
One of the first ideas I tried to discuss on Dark Avenue was how to solve Chapter 4 of LSTUA. This was an unresolved question left open by Hermes and Dante, Two of the three A Series of Unfortunate Events theorists I respect the most in the world, (the third being @Snicketsleuth [despite our temporary schism due to chronological issues of asoue on which we didn't reach a consensus]).
The big problem involving chapter 4 involves the chronology of events. Comparing TRR with LSTUA, we come to Lemony's conclusion, while researching the main events described in TRR (everything indicates that the research of Lemony happened a few years after the events actually took place) he received from Dr. Sebald the script for the movie Zombies in the Snow. However, Count Olaf claimed that he killed Gustav by drowning during the main events of TRR.
Furthermore, the Zombies in the Snow script contains a secret message that seems to apply in some way to the Baudelaires' case. However, the secret message indicates that there is a fire survivor inside the snowman and asks the recipient of the message to take the three children to the location where the movie takes place. Also, the secret message alerts the recipient of the message that his new assistant is not one of us.
This generates a lot of confusion in the reader's mind, as Gustav was certainly taken by surprise when he suffered the attempt on his life.
"One day when he was out collecting wildflowers I drowned him in the Swarthy Swamp. Then I forged a note saying he quit." - Count Olaf, TRR, Chpater 13.
The entire process of shooting the movie to send an urgent message to Uncle Monty seems completely impossible to do, especially when you consider that the movie Zombies in the Snow looks like it was filmed when Gustav was a kid (according to a photo in LSTUA) when Lemony was a teenager (according to an observation made in File Under 13) and appears to involve 3 similar-looking children who are unrelated to the Baudelaires. (LSTUA chapter 4).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can proudly say that I resolved this last issue some time ago in what I think is the best possible and canonical way: Despite what Lemony may think on the matter, Zombies in the Snow's secret message refers some old case unrelated to the Baudelaires. That is, when Uncle Monty and the three Baudelaires watched that movie, this was a rerun. The secret message they might have received did not apply to them. [Some might want to believe that someone decided to play the same film as the subject was relevant again... But this is something that in practice doesn't matter for my main goals, which is to understand the chronology of events in this chapter of LSTUA in relation to the TRR].
Even though I have satisfactorily resolved this last question, the first problem I raised in this text still remained. In Lemony's letter to the cheesemakers, Lemony states that he received the script from a man named Dr. Sebald. He was getting ready to return the script to Dr. Sebald, but he just didn't show up. Lemony begins to realize that the possibility that Dr. Sebald has been captured is high. So he decided to send at least the part of the script containing the Sebald code to the cheesemakers. The letter makes it clear that all this happened after Lemony had already unsuccessfully tried to publish at least one book by ASOUE. The Baudelaires hadn't been at Uncle Monty's house for quite some time, and the cheesemakers were Lemony's penultimate chance to publish ASOUE. That is, Gustav Sebald had already been presumed dead.
Dante suggested two solutions to this apparent contradiction: the first is that Uncle Monty's assistant named Gustav and the film director named Gustav Sebald are different people. Another suggestion from Dante is that although Count Olaf assumed that the attempt to cause Gustav's death was successful, Gustav actually survived. So years later Gustav was still alive so he could give Lemony the script, but he died (for real this time) before he got the script back.
I'm here to say that Dante was wrong on both assumptions, and that the best way to solve this mystery is to remove from our eyes some of the preconceptions we have as readers. Furthermore, we must accept that the simplest explanation is usually the best explanation. Consider again Sally Sebald's letter to Lemony. I must say that everything indicates that this letter (actually the set of letters) was written by Daniel Handler on purpose to reinforce our prejudices, in order to prevent the understanding of a simple truth. First of all, the order of the letters is wrong in the way it is presented in the chapter. (In the introduction to LSTUA there is already confirmation that you can read the work in any order, indicating that the documents are not necessarily in the chronological order in which they were originally produced in that universe.)
Evidence that Sally Sebald's letter was written before Lemony's letter to the cheesemakers is in the fact that Sally comments that Lemony first requested the photographs related to Zombies in the Snow, which were kept in files referring to the film. Sally Sebald stated in the letter that if Lemony had any more requests, he should do so. When Sally received Lemony's first letter requesting the photographs, Sally thought Lemony was dead, indicating that Lemony had not yet published any ASOUE books. In the letter, Saly found it necessary to describe the scene where the Sebald code had been used. Evidently, it was Sally who sent Lemony the script for the film, after Lemony requested it at some later point. So Lemony was about to return the scrip to Sally Sebald. Please note that in Lemony's letter to the cheesemakers, at no point does Lemony refer to Dr Sebald as "Gustav". Lemony calls the film director just Dr Sebald. Sally Sebald states in the letter to Lemony that now the one who takes care of the business left by Gustav Sebald is Sally Sebald. Evidence that Sally Sebald also became a film director is in the fact that Sally Sebald uses the symbol of a cinematographic camera in the letter.
So the person who didn't show up for Lemony's appointment was in fact Dr. Sally Sebald and not Gustav Sebald.
This idea is not completely new to me. However, Dante made a powerful counter-argument that he convinced me for over 2 years. I'll paraphrase Dante: "You're an idiot! Don't you realize that the person called "Dr. Sebald" in Lemony's letter to the cheesemakers is a male? Lemony uses masculine pronouns to refer to "Dr. Sebald" all along the letter!" But the correct answer I should have given Dante at that moment shouldn't have been exactly an "answer" but a "question." I should have asked the right question. But I was prejudiced.
I should have asked Dante, "How do you know Sally Sebald is a woman?"
Yes dear reader, "Sally" is a name that can apply to both boys and girls.
Nothing indicates that Sally Sebald is a woman. However, Daniel Handler knew of our prejudices as readers. Intentionally Daniel Handler provided a handwritten signature in a typical female handwriting. And the prejudice is precisely in the word "typical" of the previous sentence. In fact, you cannot tell a person's gender from their signature, especially if the person's name is commonly applied to both male and female genders. In my case, there is an aggravating factor in my prejudice: The ending of the letter "yours" seemed to me (mistakenly) more appropriate for a female friend to write to a male friend. But that has nothing to do with it! Similarly, Sally Sebald when talking about Gustav uses the word "siblings" instead of "brothers". In my prejudiced mind, "siblings" was more common to refer to children of different genders, however it is obvious that two brothers can refer to each other as "siblings" especially in the context of the letter, since the relationship between the three Snickets (one female and two males) is compared to the relationship between the two Sebalds (two males). However, Daniel Handler's choice of words makes a prejudiced reader like me fall into his trap.
So, putting together in a summarized and simple way the puzzle involving Zombies in the Snow, I propose the following chronology:
1 - When Gustav Sebald was a child, he recorded Zombies in the Snow and entered a secret code involving some relevant case at the time. (A teenage Count Olaf/"Omar" may have participated in the filming.)
2 - Years later, when Gustav Sebald was an adult and became Uncle Monty's assistant.
3 - Just before the children arrived at Uncle Monty's house, Gustav Sebald was surprised and drowned.
4 - Years later, Lemony sends a letter to the man and doctor Sally Sebald, requesting photographs from the movie Zombies in the Snow, as he had become a film director and took care of his late brother's business.
5 - The man and doctor Sally Sebald sent the photographs, and then lent Lemony Snicket the script for the movie Zombies in the Snow.
6 - After reviewing the script and photographs, Lemony deduced that Uncle Monty had never learned the Sebald code. (The word "never" here probably indicates that not even when Uncle Monty was younger had he been able to understand a Sebald code that had been sent to him, back at the time of the shooting of Zombies in the Snow.)
7 - After reaching the conclusion mentioned above, Lemony went to meet the male and doctor Sally Sebald. However, the new film director did not show up at the meeting point. Lemony then sent the script to the cheesemakers.
In other words, by understanding this chronology, we don't need to create yet another character with the same first name as Gustav involved also with Uncle Monty. By understanding this chronology, we need not believe that Gustav Sebald survived the drowning. There are already canonically more than one Sebald. And it was this man, who was misgendered by me and most fans who read LSTUA, is the person who holds the key to solving this mystery.
