Phantom Threads
Aspergillus fumigatus is a common fungus found in the soil. While it's usually harmless, it can infect people with weakened immune systems, killing over half of its victims. This infection depends on hyphae – branching threads of fungal cells used to collect nutrients and spread through the body. A healthy immune system attacks these structures to stop the fungus in its tracks, as do some antifungal drugs. But the molecular details of hyphae growth during A. fumigatus infections are still unclear. Here we see A. fumigatus growing as hyphae. These cells were genetically modified to produce more of a protein called ZfpA and have more branches and stronger cell walls (blue) versus normal cells. Researchers discovered that ZfpA increases the growth of hyphae during A. fumigatus infections, thereby protecting the fungus from our immune systems and antifungal drugs. Learning more about how this protein works could help scientists develop more effective treatments for A. fumigatus.

The first pic is on the post of an earring. Small. And I FUCKING HATE IT. It's a spore of Aspergillus fungus. We found out it's in our house. It's made me very sick. And it took our beautiful asshole away from us.
Midnight had a human-level intelligence and was a delightful jerk. She was 15. Aspergillus fungus and orbital/sinus cancer. The vet assured us that we did the kind thing today.
And now I've got leverage, in a way. I've been having Aspergilliosis symptoms for months now. Can't shake it because I have multiple immune disorders. Even had an Infectious Diseases specialist tell me I had Delusional Parasitosis.
My dead cat would beg to differ, bitch.
Her saying that put me in a deep hellscape for 3 days, because I thought I didn't know what was real. Then I thought "hey, what the actual fuck," and started advocating better...remembering all the SCORES of ways the US health system has failed me.
I plan on being a SEVERE asshole in plenty of asses.

Researchers find that the notorious fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus produces more meiotic crossovers than any other known organism. This means that the fungus can establish its complex resistance mechanism after just 1 cycle of sexual reproduction.

Identifying Common Types of Mold Found in Homes
Tumblr media
There are over 100,000 well-known species of mold, one of the most common types of indoor mold are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus.Understanding the various
types of mold and just how to determine them by color and also appearance is crucial for maintaining your family members safe. There are three primary categories of mold: allergenic, pathogenic,
as well as harmful molds. Each type has its very own distinct attributes that help you identify it quickly. In this post, we will talk about the most usual molds discovered in homes and supply an introduction of every one consisting of where
they can be discovered, their category, appearance, and also degree of danger. You can check more about the common types of mold here The Duct Kings Of Dallas

COVID-19 infection has been shown to lead to hypoxia, immunosuppression, host iron depletion, hyperglycemia secondary to diabetes mellitus, as well as prolonged hospitalizations. These clinical manifestations provide favorable conditions for opportunistic fungal pathogens to infect hosts with COVID-19. Interventions such as treatment with corticosteroids and mechanical ventilation may further predispose COVID-19 patients to acquiring fungal coinfections.
Viral binding to the host target cell results in interleukin-6 (IL-6) production and the activation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway, resulting in a proinflammatory state characterized by an increase in macrophage and cytokine concentrations. The presenting cytokine storm and immune dysregulation of COVID-19 may develop acute respiratory distress syndrome, organ failure, coagulation, and more [9]. This cytokine storm response can lead to T-cell exhaustion, seen often in chronic infectious states. Patients with COVID-19 have been found to have decreased levels of CD4+ T-lymphocytes (< 200 cells/μL), which increases susceptibility for fungal infection development [12,13]. Given that CD4+ T-lymphocytes play a role in the effective immune response to presenting pathogens, they indicate a patient’s immunologic status and functioning [14,15].
Fungal infections, for instance, often have similar symptoms to COVID-19, such as cough, shortness of breath, and fever, making it difficult to distinguish between the two diseased states.
Fungi cause a variety of diseases in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Fungal infections can develop as primary or secondary to other diseases, with modes of infection and risk varying with the pathogenic fungi that ultimately result in activation of the immune system [22]. A multi-infected state may function to increase systemic inflammation and consequently prolong recovery, leading to increased use of treatment methods, need for intensive care, and risk of death.
Researchers from Iran found that COVID-19 patients with oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) had at least one of the following risk factors: lymphocytopenia, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, corticosteroid use, broad-spectrum antibiotic use, or an immunocompromised condition (Table 2). Of these risk factors, broad-spectrum antibiotic use was the most common as it was present in 92.5% of OPC patients [90]. As antibiotic use may disrupt the balance between oral bacterial and yeast populations, it can create an environment that permits candida overgrowth and infection [91]. Clinicians in Turkey observed that COVID-19 patients who were receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics were at an increased risk for developing candidemia.

A colored scanning electron micrograph of fruiting bodies of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. The round structures (conidia) are covered in tiny spores, about to be released into the air. A. fumigatus grows in household dust and decaying vegetable matter. Although harmless to healthy people, the fungus can cause complications in people with respiratory complaints or weakened immune systems. Inhalation of the spores may lead to infection of the lungs and bronchi, which can be fatal in some cases.

Can anyone who knows things about fungi help me identify this fungus I grew in a lab a few weeks ago

If it helps we were testing the contamination on common herbal teas. The one I was testing was St. John's wort. Unfortunately these pictures are the only ones I have. I don't need the identification urgently, I'm just curious what it is. Ignore the "10 ZIF", this is just how my desk was marked.
