their universe is 1990s san francisco. by day they work as a struggling writer for the bugle, sort of following in the footsteps of (movie-adjacent) eddie brock; by night they’re spider-scrawl, fighting systemic injustice, writers’ block, and the occasional mad scientist invention. his world is less rife with supernatural evils than most, but he’s also fucking with the government and corporations and all, so it balances out

their unique thing is that they have, like, shitty meta clairvoyance in the form of inherently understanding tropes, clichés, story structure, etc. like if cinemasins/wins were a superhero. they were approached to join the society because miguel thought they’d be chill or even helpful with canon events—unfortunately scribble here is not whatsoever into following rigid plot structure for the sake of unnecessary thematic suffering, saw the plot twist a miles away, and peaced. but not before snagging a day pass so they could watch atsv in person

they never take off their mask, and no one knows their name—he says it’s because he doesn’t want to lose his identity in a sea of spider-people, leading most to theorize that san-fran-spidey is some flavor of peter parker, but who’s to say for sure? the doylist reason, which he is in fact aware of, is that i don’t know either lol

Yes Kalei is a mermaid. I've hinted it in this post (and its tags) how mermaids started appearing after cleaning up Sulani. Then in this post with 'new students' one being Kalei, how she is shy (mainly because she's never lived on land or interacted with humans). There's more but I don't wanna list everything lmao. Renee respects her wishes for both of their safety and is holding back how she really feels, so she can remain friends with her. All this added mermaid stuff makes studying history at uni more important for Renee! Firstly she loves history and gaining knowledge of the world around her. Secondly the degree can lead to law, so she could perhaps make a difference with the world. The final point is, there may be special classes to do with history/laws of the supernatural. That is IF she wants to take them and if she will be 'accepted' into those classes. But yeah, who knows if I will stick to this plot or if other things happen 👀

every single thing said about kaz is just like, patently false to the point of irony. dirtyhands about a man whose hands are literally spotless because they're never uncovered. without morals or conscience, would do anything for money when it is repeatedly implied he's passed over business opportunities if they involved slavery or indentures. doesn't say goodbye, just lets go about a man who has made it a point to never let anything go. doesn't need a reason when he is proven to never act without a reason, and in all actuality usually has at least two. and this is without mentioning bastard of the barrel about probably one of the only barrel kids to have at least started out with a "normal", happy nuclear family...

and it just makes me think: kaz is deliberately written not to be better than people say he is, but just bad in different ways. he is not good or virtuous or compassionate; the point of having people say things that are not true about him isn't to make a point of his completely different nature.

so the point of it can only be to emphasize how nobody really knows him. to draw attention to his absolute isolation. and maybe to give more credit to how much his 'armour', which is supposed to protect him by keeping everyone away, really only serves to keep him away from everyone else.

I have so many thoughts about Kingsley and Fjord and I played myself by nestling them into the second book — where everything is extremely complex and sad — and where those thoughts couldn’t be as central to the piece.

But I think even while wearing his boots, Fjord clears Kingsley height wise by like half an inch and it bothers King a lot, though he’d never say it. I think often about what Taliesin said about how much Kingsley enjoys being better at Fjord’s job than Fjord is, but nevertheless only ever refers to him as Captain. I think about how people said plenty about Kingsley poaching Fjord’s crew when he leaves — how long do you reckon they’d stay?

I think about Kingsley as a captain years later and with more experience under his belt, repeating things to crewmen that Fjord once said to him at least a little bit to get him to shut up, and having to go stare at a wall about it.

In other words, I think about how we’re all doomed to become our parents a little bit — and how Kingsley actually has those.

I made and deleted a post about this a few weeks ago but I've been thinking a lot about projecting onto toxic ships/dynamics in fiction, and not onto the romantic parts ("I relate to Pete in Vegaspete because I want someone to unlock me to human touch") but onto the very toxic parts ("I relate to Vegas in Vegasporsche because he's lying his ass off and orchestrating Porsche's downfall, and mentally blaming Porsche for everything he's planning to do to him, for believing the wrong things and choosing the wrong side, AND for falling for Vegas's obvious facade! Dummy I've always been your enemy it's SO OBVIOUS!! Yet in the moment, when they're riding bikes or hugging and Vegas is compartmentalizing, he does genuinely care about Porsche and feel honest affection for him, and that's what sells the lie... and makes Vegas hate himself for his traitorous weakness and want to sabotage any sincere moments they have"), and how huge this distinction feels to me. So I wanted to do like a Tell me the most toxic fictional thing you overidentify with meme.

Not sure that's the best way to word it, and you don't have to (and probably shouldn't) explain why, but like. Don't tell me "I relate to Korn as a parent;" tell me "I relate to Korn when he's preventing his children from competing by pitting them against their cousins instead, because he can blame that on their grandfather and his brother and not himself, and pretend his kids are fine and it's just the cousins who are getting destroyed". Does that make sense? This way also I don't have to know your toxic blorbo to understand your toxic emotion. Anyway do it

This fic is so So SO good. It keeps me up at night thinking and I mean that in the best way. Also makes me want to eat my own pillow. Trying to find all the clues and figure out the mystery is an absolute DELIGHT. At the end of every chapter I feel like that one Charlie Day image with the pin board and cigarette, you know the one lol Imagine a fic with all the delicious vibes of a The Magnus Archives episode, and thats Sweet Little Lies.

In fact I was listening to DaughterofProspero’s Music of the Fears (based off of, well TMA) while doodling this. 

I’m ashamed to admit that of this moment I am not entirely caught up. I had to pause for a while, a part for life reasons (which I’m not ashamed for, it happens, no worries), another because I’m an absolute Weenie™ and want to wait until all the chapters are out so I can binge the rest in one go, the suspense is OUGH so good, just thinking about it makes my hands clammy(positive).
