Alan Post’s Union 76 opened circa ‘57. The phrase “Free Aspirin, Tender Sympathy” appeared in their print advertising that summer, but the earliest dated visual we have of the sign is a traveler's 8mm film from Fall 1958. The sign was referenced in the newspaper later that year:

“A service station attendant got some of his own ‘free aspiring and tender sympathy’ last night on the Strip after he was slugged twice with a crescent wrench by two teenagers who attempted to rob him.”

The S&H Green Stamps section of the sign was in place through the mid 60s when the station was owned by Wayne Nickerson. That section of the sign lost its neon in the 70s, and was used for painted lettering of later owners names: Jay G. Manning, 70's, and Kenneth L. Lehman, 80s til closing in 2001.

I'm giving Donna Noble some slightly uncanny qualities as little a treat. Nothing that immediately marks her as anything other than completely human, mind you, but there is oddities here and there. Sometimes at night her eyes seem to reflect light in a way they shouldn't, and she seems to be able to see more color in the darkness. One time she stuck her head under water for a bath and when she came up, according to the clock it had been ten minutes without issue. She used to run cold just like her mum's side of the family, but now she neither shivers nor sweats when by all accounts she should. She swears she can hear those whistles that are meant for dogs, and they're bloody annoying. It's not enough that she suspects anything is different about her, at least not like that, but it's enough to be just the slightest bit off from the experiences of those around her.

This is my last piece for this years event, and I am SO beyond happy with it! Particularly the coloring on DPs and RHs suits.

The dialogue:

Red Hood nudging a groaning Deadpool who ate too much: “You guys are such losers.”

Spider-Man: “Says the guy who moved cities to join Team Red.”

Red Hood: “I did not. Believe it or don’t, but New York has job opportunities.”

Spider-Man: “For a theater kid like you? What, gonna audition for Matilda on Broadway?”

Red Hood: “Fuck you, if I did, I would get the lead role and win every Tony Award possible–”

Spider-Man: “Oh my god, you’re such a nerd–”

Daredevil: “Would you two shut up–”

Barbara is absolutely listening to this through Jason's helmet and snickering to herself, imagining him as Matilda, brown wig, red bow and all.

Hey I was talking to a coworker and they said that it was safe to take aspirin "until your ears ring", which is the first sign of overdose. If you then immediately stop you'll be completely fine. She claims her surgeon brother told her this. Is this true???

While it's correct that tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is one of the first symptoms of overdose (along with nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, and fast breathing), logistically there's not really a way to take it "until your ears ring".

Tinnitus is most common in acute (one-time) aspirin overdoses. And it takes about an hour after a toxic dose for enough of the aspirin to get into your system to cause tinnitus. So by the time you have the symptom, you already took too much an hour ago.

Plus, tinnitus is just one of the first symptoms. It doesn't say anything about the severity of the ingestion, or whether or not it was lethal. All it says is that there is too much aspirin in the body.

Following tinnitus, nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating, and fast breathing, the blood becomes very alkaline. Symptoms include numbness and tingling, muscle twitching, fatigue, and dizziness. You also lose a lot of potassium in your urine in this phase- and the resulting low potassium in the blood can cause lethal heart rhythms. If you survive this, the blood then becomes life-threateningly acidic. Symptoms here include weakness, confusion, headache, and fast heartbeat. If the acidosis is not corrected and the potassium replaced, either of these things can lead to death.

About half of aspirin overdoses are intentional. The rest tend to be children who accidentally drink liquid preparations of aspirin or ingest oil of wintergreen (one teaspoon (5ml) of oil of wintergreen contains the equivalent amount of salicylate (the active part of aspirin) to 21 adult aspirins).

It is super important if you are having symptoms of overdose to go to a hospital. You need to get potassium back into your blood and get your pH back to normal or the overdose can absolutely be lethal.

All this to say there's not really a safe way to overdose on aspirin. I'd just stick to what it says to take on the bottle, and if you need more pain relief than that take acetaminophen/paracetamol (not ibuprofen) on top of it, along with other modalities of pain control like heat, cold, distraction, positioning, splinting, or mobility aids. If it continues, talk to a doctor.
