From the studio that brought you Monument Valley comes a story about a globe-trotting antique restorer. As she arrives in the sun-soaked town of Bellariva, she has no idea just how broken it will turn out to be.

A Note On... Item Restorations
Tumblr media
Assemble with Care is a narrative puzzle game by ustwo Games.
So I actually cried while playing this game. The themes hit hard and I'm an emotional human being. And to that point, the writing was great.
The sound design is immaculate. From voice work to music to sound effects. Absolute masterpiece.
My only gripe about my experience was that the game auto-continued while a voice line was running at the end of levels. I'd have to listen extra close through the music to make out what they were saying.
As short games go, Assemble with Care one gets a big thumbs up from me.
As always,
Enjoy Gaming!

How can I ask for help, when all she cares about is herself?

Watches measure minutes and hours like they're infinite. I didn't know we had so little time.

Even the smallest object can hold the biggest meaning.
I hoped fixing this was one small way I could help him move forward.
I loved figuring out their stories, revealing the memories hidden beneath the screws and wires.
The people I'd met, the items I'd restored, they'd taught me so much about what was really important.
They'd each learned to see things from someone else's perspective.

Door Reviews: Assemble With Care (2019)
Hello! I played this one game a while ago, but only got to reviewing it now. I decided I wanted a cozy game to try, and settled on this one. It looked like it had nice aesthetics, and it caught my eye. Now that I’ve played it, it is time for me to write a review! Let’s get to it.
Tumblr media
What’s it about?
Maria, an antique restorer, arrives at the small town of Bellariva in search of work. She manages to find some jobs to fix various items. As time goes on though, it seems like she’s finding herself fixing people’s lives as well…
STYLE (Gameplay, Graphics, Music)
Tumblr media
The game looks very neat. Polished, even. As if it belongs in a graphic design class or something? Font looks neat, art looks nice and well placed. I see that the game itself has a lot of chapters, and so I begin.
The game itself is a sort of puzzle game. Fiddle with the item until it is fixed. Unscrew bolts, open up caps, remove and replace the broken parts, etc. You get to fix a different item each chapter.
Tumblr media
It reminds me of Unpacking (2021). It feels kinda therapeutic, fiddling with stuff and fixing them. The gameplay itself is very simple, but the vibes it gives off are rather calming.
I… honestly don’t really have much comments on the style. It’s neat. It’s clean. But by itself… it doesn’t really speak to me? I like fiddling with the objects though, but I do experience some moments of immersion breaking when I find that the object itself isn’t mechanically consistent, like when a screw hole doesn’t exist for the second layer of an object.
The art is nice, music calming, and overall vibes very chill!
SUBSTANCE (Story, Characters, Impact)
Tumblr media
The story introduces us to Maria, the main character. She is a trusty fixer who can fix anything! We get a look into her life and as the game goes on, we see how she influences the community of Bellariva.
The way the story was told felt run-of-the-mill, and even felt like... a PowerPoint maybe? It kinda put me off when I realized it, but for the resources put into this, it felt okay enough.
I’m amazed with the full voice acting! Did not expect such scale of it, but I like it.
Tumblr media
The story itself was somewhat touching. It’s a simple enough story, but it is nonetheless moving. I liked the journey and how the gameplay itself relates to the struggles the characters go through.
VERDICT
Tumblr media
Ultimately I found this game nice for the time I spent on it, but I left it wanting more in like, a general way. The game told its story well enough for a game that started out as a mobile game. I can see how it’d play decently on mobile. But… I want better innovations in terms of storytelling. I want more complex stories. I feel like I ate fried chicken when I really crave is a steak. The chicken is still delicious and filling, but I’m still gonna chase the satisfaction that the ideal steak as shaped by my mind can provide.
I’m rambling at this point. Assemble with Care on its own is a nice game to play when you have a free afternoon. It’s zen enough in vibes, and it’s nice to fiddle with the objects. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a nice enough experience.

Top 6 Games of 2023
Special Mention: Raji: An Ancient Epic
Raji: An Ancient Epic is a story of a young girl, Raji as she journeys to find her brother. This game is beautiful and incorporates Hindu beliefs and mythology. While just not making it into my top 6, it deserved a spotlight as a brilliant showcase and first major title for Nodding Head Games. I can't wait to see what they do next.
Tumblr media
#6: Bugsnax
Bugsnax follows your journey as a journalist while you try to find clues as to the disappearance of famed explorer Elizabert Megafig and, discover the secrets of Snaktooth Island. I was initially put off by Bugsnax because of the weird body stuff, something about it just squicked me out. But when I decided to give it a try, I actually found it fun, inventive and endearing.
Tumblr media
#5: Captain Toad: Treasure TrackerCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, follows Captain Toad and Toadette as they journey across many lands, securing stars along the way. Using motion controls or touchpad, help navigate puzzles to unlock stars and find hidden treasures. This is just cute, if a little frustrating at times.
Tumblr media
#4: Assemble with Care
Assemble with Care is a story based game about fixing broken items. But through your careful assembly of the many different things, you uncover a lovely woven story. One day you might be helping put together a neon light for your friend's cafe, the next you're fixing an old cassette player, so a little girl can hear her mother's voice again.
Tumblr media
#3: Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead follows four survivors: Bill, Zoey, Louis and Francis as they try their best to navigate the zombie apocalypse. Left 4 Dead's graphics might not be up to today's standards but the game play still holds up. While I will probably never be good at first person shooters (spray and pray method, mostly), I can still appreciate the game and what it brought to the genre and, what a lot of games tried and, mostly, failed to replicate. All these years later, it's still a solid game.
Tumblr media
#2: Super Mario Bros. Wonder
I knew when the first reveal trailer was announced, that this game was going to be something special. I was already captivated but once the piranha plants began to sing, I was sold completely. This game blows all other Super Mario games out the water with it's stylized gameplay, beautiful soundtrack and weird and wonderful(pun intended) surprises. I hope that Nintendo continue down this route because only more creative works can come from it.
Tumblr media
#1: Stories of Blossom
Stories of Blossom did so many amazing things through it's: game play, accessibility and stories that I couldn't place it any lower on my list. It follows Clara, a little girl and her grandfather as she journeys through several different stories, using items collected along the way to solve problems and help the people of the land and, Clara with their worries. I'm excited to see what this game studio has in store next.

Assemble With Care
Rating: 3/5. The assembly puzzles are fun, but mostly obvious. The plot is cute, but pretty cheesy and unrealistic.
Tumblr media
Assemble With Care is a game about, you guessed it, assembling things. You play Maria, an antiques restorer, who has arrived in the town of Bellariva to visit their food festival. Over the course of 16 or so object repairs, you become entwined in 2 families' stories and see if you can't help them out, and in the process, maybe fix something of your own story.
Tumblr media
My main issue with this game is the story just rings very hollow to me. I know "fixing things" is a job... perhaps... but can you really just show up as a stranger in a foreign town, throw a couple fliers around, and have 16 jobs in 3 days? I feel like if I had something broken, I would not hire some random person whose flier i saw on a telephone pole... but maybe I'm a cynic.
Tumblr media
Aside from that, the assembling game is pretty fun and cute. It's not super challenging, but it is very satisfying to put things together and see them light up and start working again. (Side note, another unrealistic aspect is Maria has everything in her Mary Poppins bag, from DSLR mirrors to rotary phone circuit boards.) So overall, a fun hour or so, if you don't mind cheesy plots!

And now is time...for Satan to be super duper stressed out at a game that should not be stressful at all. Everyone is going to have so much fun....except for maybe Satan, but that is what was paid for right?
