Von Woody Allen gibt es diese schöne Geschichte mit einem Helden namens Sandor Nadelmann. Als dieser einmal mit Freunden die Mailänder Scala besucht, beugt er sich in der Loge so weit vor, dass er in den Orchestergraben fällt. Obwohl das natürlich heftig schmerzt, gesteht Nadelmann nicht ein, dass ihm ein Missgeschick widerfahren ist. Er besucht die Oper Abend für Abend und wiederholt jedes Mal den Sturz; einmal zieht er sich dabei auch eine leichte Gehirnerschütterung zu. Sein Motto: lieber absichtlich leiden als sich tölpelhafterweise Schadenfreude aussetzen. Diese Anekdote fällt einem unweigerlich ein, je länger man über das (neuerliche) Scheitern von Deutschland beim Eurovision Song Contest nachdenkt, für das in erster Linie der NDR verantwortlich ist. Seit Jahren versucht der Sender, dem europäischen Schlager-Pop und Konfetti-Furor etwas Konkurrenzfähiges entgegen zu stellen. Jahr für Jahr der Absturz, zuletzt am Samstagabend in Turin mit Malik Harris. Dessen Beitrag war beileibe nicht so schlecht, wie es der letzte Platz vermuten lässt. Es gab eben nur wieder kaum Punkte aus Polen, Italien & Co. Wir können singen, was wir wollen, die Anderen mögen uns nicht Das diesjährige Konzept hatte ja eine stärkere Einbindung einzelner Landesrundfunkanstalten vorgesehen. Die ARD-Popwellen sollten im Vorfeld Songs abspielen und Hörer abstimmen lassen. Zuvor hatte die deutsche ESC-Delegation fünf Künstler mit ihren Titeln ausgewählt. Hat dem NDR und Deutschland nichts gebracht. Zum einen: Deutschland lässt sich im ESC-Halbfinale krachend hinaus wählen, dass es gar nicht zur großen Blamage vor 200 Millionen Zuschauern kommt. Wir können singen, was wir wollen, die Anderen mögen uns nicht. Zweiter Vorschlag, und damit zu Nadelmann und dem NDR, den ESC-Tölpeln und Wiederholungstätern. Der Sender verzichtet tatsächlich auf die Vorauswahl und überlässt es dem Privatfernsehen, RTL & Co., für deutsches Liedgut 2023 in der Ukraine zu sorgen. Schlechter als der NDR geht nicht. Das schmerzt. Leider gibt es wenig Hoffnung. Der NDR werde den Vorentscheid für den ESC einmal mehr überarbeiten, teilte der Sender mit. Wie genau, werde bekannt gegeben, wenn es steht. Ab in die Oper.

IT IS THE STONES FOR ALTARS AND THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM

Passar tempo no mundo humano sempre foi uma das grandes diversões de Sól. Podia viver vidas diferentes, sendo pessoas diferentes e conhecendo pessoas diferentes. No seu tempo de existência - que era muito - a deusa já passara por uma grande sorte de vidas. Mas sempre havia algo em comum entre todas as vidas que tivera no mundo humano: estava sempre sob os holofotes. A bela e jovem rainha que conquistara o rei da Inglaterra, a diva do rádio com a voz doce e as canções que conquistaram o mundo, a top model que fora considerada a mulher mais bonita a pisar em uma passarela. Independente de qual a vida, Sól gostava de, assim como o astro do qual recebe força, ser o centro de tudo.

Não vê a atividade de ter filhos com humanos como uma necessidade, Sól apenas tem filhos quando sente algo pelo homem com quem se relaciona. E quando isso acontece, a deusa permanece ao lado da nova família por todo o tempo que lhe é permitido. É uma mãe afável e carinhosa, gostando de curtir todo o tempo possível no mundo humano, se preparando para quando precisaria partir. Quando começa a perceber que a hora está chegando, Sól começa a parecer fisicamente doente, o que sempre colabora com o fim humano dela: uma doença que tira a vida da jovem mulher. De certa forma arma suas “mortes” para que seus filhos não se sintam abandonados e a odeiem, como ela vê acontecer com outros filhos de divindades que simplesmente vão embora de uma hora para outra.

Sól não exatamente escolheu lecionar em Aspera, as coisas apenas aconteceram. Mas quem melhor para ensinar astronomia do que alguém tão ligada aos astros como a deusa-sol? Gosta de estar em contato com os campeões e ensinar a eles. Quando está com seus alunos parte da Sól-mãe aflora, sendo paciente com eles. Entretanto, isso não a impede de ser rígida e exigente com os jovem campeões. Há algum tempo não tem um campeão seu, ela entende a lógica do torneio e de reencarnar em outro corpo, mas seu envelhecimento é mais devagar que o dos demais deuses, por isso passou pelo processo poucas vezes - tendo sendo a mais recente no torneio passado.

Árvakr e Alsviðr: Um pequeno amuleto carregado por Sól em um colar, no pingente pode se ver dois cavalos, os dois mesmos que puxam a Álfröðull pelos céus. Árvakr concede à deusa atenção aguçada e Alsviðr lhe deixa mais rápida.

Heliocinese: Como era de se esperar, Sól pode manipular o próprio sol. Sua ligação com o astro é muito forte e ela se beneficia dele enquanto é dia, podendo ficar um pouco fraca enquanto é noite ou em longos invernos.

Envelhecimento lento: Assim como seu irmão Máni, a deusa Sól foi abençoada por seu pai Mundilfari por um retardamento do envelhecimento. Mas não é algo completamente inato dela, a deusa precisa estar exposta ao sol com certa frequência. É como se o sol a rejuvenescesse. Por isso é tão comum vê-la ao sol e perceber mudanças significativas em suas feições quando fica por dias loge do astro.

Weak Masculine Nouns; German

So whilst these aren't the biggest aspect of German grammar, these are something you ought to know because they're quite funky.

What the heck are "weak masculine nouns"?

"Weak masculine nouns" is a bit of an odd name for them, but let's just go with that because that's what they're often called. They are a group of masculine nouns which have the ending "-(e)n" in every case and every number EXCEPT for Nominative Singular and some other exceptions which I'll discuss later. Here's an example of two weak masculine nouns:

Nom.: der Bär, Bauer / die Bären, Bauern Akk.: den Bären, Bauern / die Bären, Bauern Dat.: dem Bären, Bauern / den Bären, Bauern Gen.: des Bären, Bauern / der Bären, Bauern

As you can see also, they do not usually take an S in genitive either. Okay now onto all the other important bits and bobs.

1. Two important exceptions

Herz and Herr are two important exceptions here, because i) Herz is neuter and behaves this way, and ii) both decline a bit differently:

Nom.: das Herz, der Herr / die Herzen, Herren Akk.: das Herz, den Herrn / die Herzen, Herren Dat.: dem Herzen, Herrn / die Herzen, Herren Gen.: des Herzens, Herrn / die Herren, Herren

Herr only adds a +N in singular (and the +EN in plural), whereas Herz has a genitive +S and does not change in Accusative Singular.

2. Exceptions with the genitive

There are 10 of these nouns which take the S in the genitive, also irritatingly they can have TWO forms in the nominative singular (except Buchstabe) - one with the +(e)n already there, and one without.

der Buchstabe, Fels(en), Friede(n), Funke(n), Haufe(n), Gedanke(n), Glaube(n), Name(n), Same(n), Wille(n).

Ex. der Buchstabe/den, dem Buchstaben/des Buchstabens, der Funke(n)/den, dem Funken/des Funkens, der Name(n)/den, dem Namen/des Namens.

3. Which are weak masculine nouns then?

There's no 'easy' answer ;D You can usually work out which are weak masculine nouns based on a few things:

- Most masculine nouns ending in unstressed 'e' (Käse and Charme are part of a small number of exceptions). > e.g. der Löwe, der Erbe

- Most of those referring to nationalities, which too usually end like^. > e.g. der Däne, der Brite

- Almost all ending with one of these suffixes: -ade, -ale, -and, -ant, -arch, -(kr)at, -ent, -et, -graf/ph, -isk, -ist, -ik, -it, -loge, -nom, -one, -ot, -(s)oph, -und. > e.g. Nomade, Kannibale, Proband, Demonstrant, Anarch, Autokrat, Abiturient, Exeget, Biograph, Obelisk, Anarchist, Katholik, Alewit, Biologe, Astronom, Mormone, Chaot, Theosoph, and Vagabund.

- And the remainder are a group of (usually one syllable) nouns which relate to male beings/animals. > e.g. Bär, Bauer, Bayer, Bub, Mensch, Held, Fürst, Prinz, Zar, Welf, Schenk, Hirt, Schultheiß, Spatz, Fink, Pfau, Greif, Leu, Narr, Tor, Depp, Geck, Mohr, Oberst, Partisan, Magnet, Untertan, Vorfahr, Ahn, Typ, Graf, Tyrann, Kamerad, Bote, Rabe, Welpe, Chirurg, Barbar, Nachbar, Ochs, Papagei, etc.

4. Anything else to know?

Two things;

i) Colloquially the endings are usually dropped but in formal writing you ought to retain them. ii) If you are using a weak masculine noun without an article DO NOT ADD THE (E)N ending; this is to make sure there's no confusion between singular and plural.

Statistical analysis of variability properties of the Kepler blazar W2R 1926+42. (arXiv:1804.10245v1 [astro-ph.GA])

We analyzed Kepler light curves of the blazar W2R 1926+42 that provided nearly continuous coverage from quarter 11 through quarter 17 (589 days between 2011 and 2013) and examined some of their flux variability properties. We investigate the possibility that the light curve is dominated by a large number of individual flares and adopt exponential rise and decay models to investigate the symmetry properties of flares. We found that those variations of W2R 1926+42 are predominantly asymmetric with weak tendencies toward positive asymmetry (rapid rise and slow decay). The durations (D) and the amplitudes (F0) of flares can be fit with log-normal distributions. The energy (E) of each flare is also estimated for the first time. There are positive correlations between logD and logE with a slope of 1.36, and between logF0 and logE with a slope of 1.12. Lomb-Scargle periodograms are used to estimate the power spectral density (PSD) shape. It is well described by a power law with an index ranging between -1.1 and -1.5. The sizes of the emission regions, R, are estimated to be in the range of 1.1*10^15 cm - 6.6*10^16 cm. The flare asymmetry is difficult to explain by a light travel time effect but may be caused by differences between the timescales for acceleration and dissipation of high-energy particles in the relativistic jet. A jet-in-jet model also could produce the observed log-normal distributions.
