each hour of the day is ruled by a specific planet. every planet holds a different energy, resulting in each hour holding a different influence. planetary hours are great to schedule important meetings or dates, to study, manifest, post content, etc. and it's a technique often used by wealthy people to boost their success ✨ this practice dates back to hellenistic astrology; as such, we'll only take in consideration the seven classical planets: the sun, the moon, mercury, venus, mars, saturn and jupiter. in this reading I'll show you how to calculate planetary hours, what they mean and how you can use them based on your birth chart 💫.

calculating planetary hours

calculating planetary hours is extremely easy, and also free. first of all, I suggest using the website planetaryhours.net. you just have to select the date of the day you want to check and the place of your location, and you'll automatically get a chart of all the planetary hours of the chosen day. apple users also have access to the planetaro app, which pretty much works the same. the advantages of this app are the possibility to enable notifications, in order to be noticed whenever it is a certain planetary hour, and you can also add an aesthetic widget to your home screen to always keep an eye on them.

how to make the best out of planetary hours

☉ sun hour: great for being in the spotlight, creativity, confidence and self-expression. during sun hour, try to schedule your job interviews, post your social media content to reach more engagement, work on your creative projects to be more inspired; talk to authoritative figures during this hour (for example to ask your boss for a raise). sun hour is also great for manifesting success, fame, popularity and confidence.

☽ moon hour: great time to spend with your family or at home in general. you can book a table at a restaurant during moon hour, since it's also the hour for food, you can have a meal with your family, or also cook, as the food cooked during this hour turns out very delicious. moon hour is also great for serene naps, with frequent dreams. in fact, during this hour we tend to be more in tune with our imagination and intuition. as such, you can also read tarots or your birth chart with better results during moon hour. this is also a great time for journaling and writing down your feelings.

☿ mercury hour: this is the best time for communication and learning of any kind. it's the best hour to study, you may find yourself easily more focused on the topics you're studying. this is also the best time to write essays or any kind of formal document. if you have to write and send an important email or message, this is the best time to do it. this is also the best hour to take a lesson or an exam, if you can schedule them at your leisure. this is also a good time to write content for your blog (it's mercury hour as I'm writing this rn!) and for creative writing. this is also a good hour to sell items and to make deals in general.

♀︎ venus hour: during venus hour you can do a bunch of things! first of all, it's the best time for love, therefore you can schedule a date, a marriage during venus hour in order to make it turn out well. it's also a great hour for creative activities and for entertainment in general. during venus hour you may attend a concert, go watch a movie, go shopping, throw a party... it's also the best time to book an appointment with the hairdresser, with your nail tech and anything that involves beauty. this is also a good time to grow your social media, create and post content and manifest luxury and money.

♂︎ mars hour: great for physical activity; if you workout, make sure to do it during mars hour for better stamina and results. this also applies for sports and competitions of any kind. mars hour also makes you more assertive, so it's a good hour to make decisions and plan your week, do something that you always procrastinate. on the other hand, remember that mars is also a malefic planet: try to avoid confrontations that may escalate into an argument, as during this hour it's easier to get stressed or lose our temper.

♃ jupiter hour: jupiter hour is obviously the lucky hour of the day! it's the best time to manifest abundance and wealth, you may want to play the lottery during this time. this is also a good time to launch your business, do anything that you may want to grow and turn into success. that can implicate studying for an important test, investing your money... during jupiter hour you can also pursue spiritual activies like meditation, astrology, yoga, tarot reading, etc. in addition, it's the best time to study a foreign language and planning trips.

♄ saturn hour: during saturn hour we tend to feel more disciplined; as a result, it's the best time to do your house chores, complete a project you are procrastinating, organize your week and your plans for the future. saturn usually makes things slow, therefore if you want to do something swiftly make sure not to do it during this hour. instead, do things that you want to take slow and nurture with time. saturn also rules karma, therefore be mindful of what you do and what happens during this hour. most of the time, significant events that occur during saturn hours are karmic events that were meant to be.

a little trick

to make the most out of planetary hours, look at your birth chart and act based on your personal planets. for example, let's suppose you want to cut your hair. you can book your appointment during venus hour, but what I suggest you to do is to look at the sign your venus falls in. for example, if your natal venus is in virgo, it means it's ruled by mercury, and therefore mercury hour will activate your natal venus and give you its benefits. in this way, you'll be able to match the energy of your birth chart to planetary hours for better results.

Planetary Days & Hours

Each day and hour of our lives is ruled by different planets. If you study astrology, you already know every planet profoundly influences our lives from birth until death. Understanding the different planetary movements can help you find the best time for performing any ritual, scheduling a meeting, and everything in between.

Understanding the Planetary System

The planetary day begins with sunrise, is sectioned into 24 planetary hours, and ends at sunrise the following day. It sounds like a regular day; however, planetary hours are not divided into 60-minute intervals--in other words, some planetary hours are longer than others. Our days are divided into 2 sections: sunlight and moonlight. From sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal sections; sunset to sunrise is divided into another 12 sections.

This results in moonlight planetary hours being longer than sunlight. Rarely are the planetary hours precisely 60 minutes. The only exception is the spring & fall equinoxes.

This chart helps you better understand the order of the hours and how they move throughout the day. 7 influential planets rule the days and hours: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. Each day begins in the hour of their respective planet.

Sunday always starts in the hour of the Sun. Monday always starts in the hour of the Moon, etc.

From here, the hours move in a linear pattern.

Sun (1), to Venus (2), to Mercury (3), to Moon (4), to Saturn (5), to Jupiter (6), to Mars (7): Repeat.

Regardless of the day, the hours will always move in this order. You might be wondering /how/ the days start in their respective planetary hours if we maintain this order. We skip three planets between the last hour of moonlight and the first hour of sunlight.

On Sundays, we end in the Hour of Mars (the last hour), skip the Sun/Venus/Mercury, and start in the Hour of the Moon - beginning Monday. You can refer to the previous picture to get a better visual.

earlier today i made a tweet about ordering food under a mars hour, and how mars hours can be helpful for doing things quickly. here, i’ll define what a planetary hour is and how they can be used in our everyday lives !!

planetary hours are periods of ~60 minutes that occur on a repeated cycle throughout the day, with each hour ruled by one of the seven traditional planets. the hourly cycle is arranged by each planet’s orbital period, from longest to shortest:

saturn (29.5 years)

jupiter (12 years)

mars (687 days)

sun (365 days)

venus (225 days)

mercury (88 days)

moon (29 days)

HOW TO USE PLANETARY HOURS:

saturn: taking care of responsibilities, getting rid of useless items, working with the elderly, meditating and enjoying stillness, any kind of selfless action or donation, reflecting on forgiveness

jupiter: traveling long distances, learning a new language, having discussions about commitment, starting new commitments in general, prayer or leaving offerings, political or academic work

mars: doing laborious work (like saturn hours), exercising, ordering food or cooking, getting things done quickly, participating in competitions (especially of an athletic nature)

sun: working with people in power or children, applying for jobs or other career opportunities, enjoying yourself recreationally, achieving success, humorous or comedic activities, selling things

venus: sending a romantic message, learning a form of dance or music, spending time in the natural world, expressing yourself artistically, having sex, giving yourself a new cosmetic change

mercury: getting groceries (like moon hours), business transactions and meetings, reading, making progress on literary projects, washing your car, taking your animal to the vet, teaching

moon: helping out pregnant people or new parents, taking care of infants, buying dairy products or other goods made of milk, redecorating or cleaning up your home, doing chores, gardening

it’s also important to note that the state of the planet you’re relying on will be important — be sure to check the dignity and motion of a planet before trying to use its energy for a specific task !!

venus, for example, is fallen in the sign of virgo. so it may not be the best time to cut your own hair under a venus hour while it’s in this sign (as virgo governs criticism and nitpicking). however, this is an amazing time to be generous and helpful to others (since virgo governs service and assistance)

HOW TO TRACK PLANETARY HOURS:

personally, i like to use the cosmic insights app to track planetary hours because you can add the hourly calendar to your lock screen !! planetaryhours.net and astro-seek.com are resources i've used over the years that are also reliable — just keep in mind that some websites may show different times for the planetary hours because of the calculations they use to find them

𖤓 Planetary days ?

In various languages, the names of the days of the week are derived from the 7 visible celestial bodies, and English is no exception to this rule: Sunday, Mo(o)nday, Satur(n)day. Certain days like Thursday and Friday took their names from the Norse/Germanic (e.g. Friday from Frigg, Wednesday from Odin/Woden, Thursday from Thor) counterparts to the Greco-Roman gods after which the Planets are named. And through their names, each day is consequently tied to a planet.

On those days, it’s advised to partake in activities related to the ruling planet & incorporate its respective colours into your outfit or surroundings.

𖤓 Planetary hours ?

Not only do days carry individuating temporal flavors, hours do also. The initial hour of each day at sunrise is connected to the corresponding planet, e.g. with today being Wednesday, the first hour was Mercury’s.

The first hour of Monday corresponds to the Moon, Tuesday's first hour to Mars, and so forth. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto do not have individual hours, as only the visible planets are assigned hourly segments.

Hours get assigned in a standard order, called the Chaldean Order. This is the ranking of planets from the slowest- to fastest-moving. The Chaldean Order goes Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury & Moon. Saturn is farthest out & slowest mover, while the Moon is the fastest & closest to earth.

The order is pretty straightforward: if, for example, the last hour was a Mars hour, this hour is a Sun hour. If last hour was Sun hour, this hour is Venus hour; and next hour is Mercury hour. Once Moon hour is over, you restart from scratch, & next hour will be Saturn’s hour and so on. The pattern is predictable.

A planetary day always commences at dawn, not midnight. There are always twelve planetary hours in a day, and twelve planetary hours in a night, which means that you must calculate the total minutes spanning from sunrise to sunset, and then divide that sum by twelve. This calculation will determine the duration of each planetary hour in terms of “clock” time.

Why does this matter? Because days are shorter in winter, & longer in summer, so the length of planetary hours varies from a season to another. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to calculate any of this manually (unless you want to, of course) — there are apps and sites designed to tell you which planetary hour it is. The aforementioned info was just for the culture.

It’s very useful to keep planetary hours in mind when wanting to initiate certain things or to see how certain situations will play out. You don’t have to follow them to a T, but they still proffer a nice framework around which you can structure your day.

Now let’s see what each Planetary hours is good for.

♄ Hour of Saturn ♄

— from experience, anything INITIATED at this hour will experience delays.

— imo, it’s best to utilize this hour to do things that you’ve already initiated previously and that need some more work or refining.

— Great time to engage in physically or mentally hard work.

— If you have to deal with administration work, do it during Saturn's hour.

— Great time to do selfless jobs and activities. Take care of your plants, for example, or spend time with the elderly.

♃ Hour of Jupiter ♃

— Very beneficial hour for philosophical readings, learning in general & satisfying your curiosity.

— Right time to deal with law/justice related matters.

— Great time to do spiritual work.

— Ideal time to seek & offer help (therapy time, for example).

— Beneficial in promoting your work/business & having social meetings (best time to deal with people!).

— Avoid negative thinking during this time as those thoughts will be expanded.

♂ Hour of Mars ♂

— Mars hour is auspicious for starting any project & investing your energies in doing hard work related to said project.

— Perfect time to work out, do some physical training, & practice all kinds of sports.

— Great for practicing for competitive exams — not studying per se, but rather taking mock exams.

— Great time to engage in activities that demand effort.

— A great time to challenge competitors. Just make sure to avoid fights (unless you have it planned out, lol).

— My personal favourite time to go on night rides or motorcycle rides. Consider trying, you won't regret.

☉ Hour of the Sun ☉

— This is the best hour to channel creativity and self expression. Tap into your creativity juices and tackle some of those things you’ve been procrastinating on starting.

— Favourable time to get in touch with figures of authority such as leaders, e.g. if you wanna write a mail to your boss, do it during Sun’s hour.

— Also advantageous when dealing with governmental matters.

— You can also utilize this hour to meditate as the sun represents a source of energy & life force — & pray if it’s your thing, recharge your crystals, etc. It’s a great time to do some occultism in general (remember, the sun rejoices in the 9H).

— And lastly, if you aim to gain recognition in any project, the hour of the sun is the opportune time to initiate it.

♀ Hour of Venus ♀

— As it comes right after sun’s hour, if you started any artistic or creative activity (painting, drawing, etc) during the former, you can keep on doing it during Venus’ hour.

— Best hour to bath/shower and take care of your hair, body & skin.

— Ideal time to get your hair done, do your nails, put on make-up, get dolled up, that sort of things.

— Best time to go out on a date &/or get laid 🫡.

— Great time for shopping, going outside with friends, enjoying yourself basically.

— Beware of overindulgence though.

☿ Hour of Mercury ☿

— Auspicious for writing, blogging, posting on social media.

— Great for trading, purchasing things & initiating short trips.

— Positive time for language learning.

— If you wanna start writing or reading a book or an essay — now is the time.

— Any intellectual activity is encouraged during this hour.

— Best hour when you want to advertise something you made or wrote.

☽︎ Hour of the Moon ☽︎

— Auspicious for travelling, especially short trips.

— Ideal for recalibrative meditation & journaling.

— Great time to practice rejuvenating, stress-relieving & meditative sports such as non-competitive swimming, pilates, yoga.

— Best time to cook and clean.

— You can also use this time to take a relaxing bath.

— It’s crucial not to start anything important during this hour since the mood is very shifty & impermanent so you might end up taking rash decisions you’ll regret. It’s best to just use this time to rest and rewind.

The first thing we have to learn is, which day of the week is associated with which planet, since that’s how we assign a planet to an “hour:”

Monday - Moon

Tuesday - Mars

Wednesday - Mercury

Thursday - Jupiter

Friday - Venus

Saturday - Saturn

Sunday - Sun

(It’s a little more obvious in different languages, eg Spanish. English is such a magpie language.)

Next, we take the time between sunrise and sunset, and divide the total daylight by 12. Results are going to vary hugely, depending on where you live and what time of year it is.

Where I live, for example, at 40°01’ north latitude: on the Cancer Solstice the “day” is 15 clock hours long; dividing that by 12 gives me planetary hours that are 1 hour 15 minutes in length. At the Capricorn Solstice, though, from sunrise to sunset is only 9 hours 19 minutes; that divides into 12 planetary hours of 46.583 minutes each.

We do the same thing with the nighttime hours: measuring the time between sunset and sunrise, and dividing into 12 equal “hours.”

To assign which planet goes with which hour, we consider what day of the week it is, and start by assigning the first planetary hour (beginning at sunrise) to that planet. For a Monday:

Moon

Saturn

Jupiter

Mars

Sun

Venus

Mercury

Moon

Saturn

Jupiter

Mars

Sun

(That “order” is based on planetary speed, from slowest (Saturn) to swiftest (Moon).)

At night, after sunset, we keep going in the same order:

13. Venus

14. Mercury

15. Moon

….and so forth. It works out beautifully and we start Tuesday, Mars’ day, with a Mars hour.

Now that we know the mechanics, and could possibly calculate this all on our own - there is a web site that will do it for us:

planetaryhours . net

Just remove the spaces. (It didn’t work at all on my admittedly ancient cell phone; worked quite well on my iPad 10th Generation.)

What do we do with this information? If we’re working a spell, we can use the best timing for optimal results. I would not want to cast (say) a love working during a Saturn hour, for example. If I bought a lottery ticket, I would pick a Jupiter hour.

This can also help us hone what we do with lunar phases. The 2023 Leo New Moon happens, in my locale, during a Saturn hour - so I’m going to focus on Saturn-type things with that energy. (The lunation is also exactly trine my natal Saturn, which makes it easy to feel that energy.) Somebody in Marquette MI, though, would experience the lunation during a Sun hour.

Sometimes (as with the Leo New Moon and my natal Saturn) the skies will poke at the natal planet which happens to rule that planetary hour. Other times, the ruler of the planetary hour is also the ruler of the Ascendant. That’s also going to strengthen your working. (Not sure it would be worth it to do the staggering amount of calculation involved, to ascertain when this happens, though.)
