Hazbin/Helluva are hated for the exact same reason theyâre loved:

I donât care if youâre a fan looking for their opinion or a âcriticâ looking for their response. THESE PEOPLE ARE WORKING HARD, THIS IS NOT A CALL OUT POST ITâS JUST FAN DRIVEL LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE OKAY?!?!?

Here are the facts of the matter:
Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are independently produced cartoons made by a bunch of people juuuuust breaking in on the animation market, and/or internet famous artists having fun with the world theyâre producing. The creator, like her style or not, is inspired and VERY passionate about what she likes and what she wants. Everyone working on the show is really into it and their work. Itâs such a self-made fandom it was technically a fandom first and a product second. Fans feel like they (and technically do) have a say in how the show should be run and what the characters should be.
It is popular enough to attract attention online but not overblown by the mainstream media.
On the positive side all those things mean:
Itâs crew is tight-nit and very passionate + stick up for each other and their projects. Itâs basically a giant colab. Whether they were preexisting fans/friends of Viv, the people working on it got to work on something they liked and with people they liked.
The animation community is super pumped and excited for them be they fans of the animators or just people who like cartoons and monsters and stuff. Theyâre positively skeptical and in on the hype cause they want to see more fluid adult animation and more indie projects take off (also 2D)!
Itâs fandom LOVES the characters, concept, and story. They are more invested in what the characters could be rather than what they actually are, but thatâs not necessarily a bad thing; to love something based on the concepts presented and use it to make AUs, hypotheticals and what not. Cringe all you want at the Onceler fandom (you can) but it is impressive to make all that material from so little!
Theyâre both edgy and insensitive based on their subject matter alone. And yet, the creators and fans DO intend for the show to be a net-positive: there IS supposed to a be representational aspect to itâs design and itâs audience. Brandon Rogers, the modern John Waters, is a pure shock-humor artist; an example of the sincere but not TOO serious risque nature these shows should have, and BOTH attract a pretty happy and excitable LGBTQ fanbase who hate bigotry.
The creators directly talking with fans means thereâs again a sense of togetherness to the whole production. That the creators tell people to ship what they want BUT NOT TO BULLY is really cool + important.
As an aside, they can only say so much and Viv is at this point not 100% of Hazbin or Helluvaâs creation. Itâs other people speaking for or with it now. Neither pilot is a singular idea and musing of one person anymore, they are stand alone products and they are not immune from critique or favoritism.
Buuuuuuut, thereâs a flipside to these things as well:
Beyond NDAs (as an aside, a lot of productions have these I donât think itâs amoral that Viv had this) the crew is tight. When they hear how a site that theyâve heard through the grabevine hosted the guy who sent Viv rape porn*, even if the critique is from a user who hates that guy, THEY ARENâT GONNA HEAR THEM OUT. And they shouldnât. They are tired and donât want to be involved, at best (or want to move on from past drama) and biased towards Viv, at worst. They stick out for each other in the business and also who are you gonna stan if you were in their shoes? A person you donât know on a forum youâve seen post creepy shit OR your friend who paid you, promos you, talks to you and you like to work with?
Ask yourself honestly what you would do if someone said:
âhey Iâm from [4chan/Kiwi, ED, Tapatalk, Reddit, ect]. Iâm sorry for what happened but just so you know-â
I so get the crew just straight up blocking on sight. I donât CONDONE it, but in a postGamerGate world I understand it.
AND when it comes to accusations made against the VAs, a producer, or one of the artists, and ESPECIALLY the creator - people are gonna just handwave it away convinced, itâs just whining or has alterier motives + again, friends stick together and choose sides...like Brock Bakerâs :B
Itâs popular so itâs gonna get love and hate. I know critics are not gonna like to hear the later, but it is true. It feels cathartic to dunk on a property when fans are crazy and you feel itâs overrated/bad. People feel good dunking on this mishandled, problematic clusterfugg cause they know not as many people are watching and unironically liking, say, Alfred Alfer ----- (please donât look that or Emily Youcis up. Hereâs the tvtropes page. Do not look beyond this point PLEASE)
Likewise, the clout surrounding the show is biased and detracted form being too mean as well. Everyone can tell thereâs a kind of toxic mess under the covers but no one wants to deep dive or prod the details of something people are working on and liking so much, especially not when the loudest detractors are asshats like P.K. Russel.
A lot of merch has been sold and produced WELL BEFORE the rest of the shows or the finalized series/designs have been laid out. If nothing comes of either show it will be bad having all this merch hyping something that doesnât exist. If it does but is so radically different than the vision in Vivâs and fanâs heads (these are both PILOTS, Iâll remind you) itâs gonna disappoint. I just know it.
People were writing Hazbin fanfics and AUs before the pilot was dropped and have made sequels to both before we have even a clear picture of what the ending is gonna be. People are in love and writing for a franchise they donât know. They know the idea of it and the version of it in their head, but they donât really know it.
The fandom can not take criticism. This is bad. Everyone is a critic and inside every critic is a nerdooo ~ ((critics do have fandoms and everyone will like something problematic for reasons)) Fans want to criticize but theyâre scared of being ostracized from the fandom and kicked off of forums/servers, which has happened to two underage fans already. **
The fandom feels entitled to their ideas and to the creatorsâ attention. If it were any other fandom it is sooper cool that creators allow people to ship as they please, but not one thatâs currently still in development and whose finalized characters havenât been figured out. The babies have been sent into the battle field at only a few months old alongside veteran ship/canon/entitled cartoon fandoms like Steven Universe and Rick and Morty. Itâs like the scene from mother! where the crowd dismembers and eats the baby.
Viv and has a serious influence on these people so even when her and a bunch of fans/artists are just gabbing about stupid memes on twitter, this invites a slew of onlookers to attack these people***. Despite the influence you can have or say to stop this behavior, itâs waaaay harder to put a stop to it than just saying âhey guys be niceâ (Anyone else remember the inner-drama of Brony fandom? Like chuds would even take the word of the AskMolestiaMod to heart when their one goal was to take down the dreaded Essjaydoublewes that threatened their rape jokes).
Fans also have no boundaries. Sea also; Lincar Rox.
Being a netpositive doesnât mean everything you say or do is devoid of critique. If you make vulgar/shocking adult content it will have fans and it will have detractors regardless of the positive intent. As Iâve said earlier, the problem with Vivâs works isnât really the content but the context and the presentation. You can say Angel Dust is an inspiring character all you want. To some people thatâs absolutely true but that does NOT absolve the fact that the itâs a cis woman writing and glamorizing an abused crossdressing gay man. People are gonna be offended and the creator needs tougher skin about this be it satire, parody, or drama.
*back when they were fixated on Zoophobia, there was a guy on Bad Webcomics Wiki/Tapatalk for the comic who posted art of Vivâs decapitated head getting raped by Angel Dust as a âjokeâ. Oh! and he also took the complaints the wiki had and made Viv and ED page. The rest of the forum was not happy but yeah that happened. The forum itself is the same as any reddit thread and NOT a hate site, but yeah um Viv has every right to quit after that, sorry.

Voltron: Legendary Planning Fail
Thanks to @ptw30ââs post, âA Few Thoughts on DW/VLD Marketingâ for reminding me that Iâve had a draft about VLD toys, merch, and marketing copy inconsistencies to complete. Read her post first.
Iâve been researching the toys and merch for several months now to follow-up on weird things that I noticed much earlier. Iâm a toy collector who is also a designer and have worked in advertising/marketing, and in broadcasting at Cartoon Network. I left that world to design and develop applications in genetics/life-sciences, best decision I ever made (co-founded a startup in between all of that too. Good times). My experiences had me zeroing in on this show bible business that came up during that Letâs Voltron interview (March 28th, 2019). Iâve been suspicious about it for awhile, as the gradual unraveling of VLDâs narrative, lore retconning, and OOC dialogue and behavior of the characters (most egregiously in S8) is indicative of a lot of problems, and an incomplete or poorly-done show bible is at the top of that list. Now combine that with the weirdly slow-to-market of VLD merchandise and toys.
Both manufacturers and merchandise license program partners canât get product to market in time to meet (or even anticipate demand) if they donât have official assets from the show, and that includes anything that would have been in the show bible. When the show-runners let it out that their show-bible was the âloosest youâll ever seeâ, and then complained about the elemental icons used on the toys by the manufacturer (Playmates) not matching their aesthetic, and after they redesigned them, Playmates didnât want to use them, I was like: âReally? Yâall got hung up on that?â
It takes months, sometimes over a year, to design and test molds for toy prototypes and then to go into mass production and distribution. Traditionally, there is also a step where the IP holder has to approve the design concepts created by the manufacturer (toys and other merch).
The IP approval step could potentially have been made more complicated by the different players involved in the communication: WEP, DreamWorks Animation, Playmates, Studio Mir, and the most complicated layer of all, DreamWorks Classics, aka Classic Media. All of them could have been involved, Iâm not saying that they all were, but itâs something to consider.
DreamWorks acquired Classic Media in 2011-2012 and formed them into a separate unit within DreamWorks Animation. Classic Media were the managers of the Voltron IP among many other brands in their huge IP library. Thatâs the short version b/c itâs complicated. IP ownership and licensing is not always as straight-forward as one might think, especially with these toy-cartoon properties from the 80s.
So where did the elemental icons come in during the creation of the show bible and toy design approval process?

I kept the package inserts becauseâas a toy collectorâI strongly felt that the packaging was done very well. The graphics are slick and look good. The ink has a nice saturation with a lot of color depth, range, and fidelity. The die-cuts are excellent and intricate. The packaging on the larger lion sets makes great use of aqueous coating and spot varnishes. Whomever designed the packaging knew what they were doing, and also understood the print production process (Hi! I used to do that too).
I kept these even though I always ditch packaging because I wanted to scan them for collage art. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these elemental icons, and they look reasonably well integrated with the graphic assets from DreamWorks and Studio Mir. These inserts were from the toys released in 2017.
The toy packaging gets more interesting when you see what marketing copy was sent to Playmates to use (or work from if it was from the show bible).

âFive young heroesâ eh? They must have gotten that text early on because thatâs kind of a weird way to say it when the Shiro packaging also says ââŚwise beyond his 25 yearsâŚâ. I mean, 25 is still young, but thatâs not what comes to mind when I read âfive young heroesâ on a toy box!
Shiro is the only one with a listed age in any of the packaging. I noticed this when I got these toys in 2017 and it reminded me that I had originally read that it would be five teenagers and I had to go looking for articles that I kept (yeah I do that b/c toys).
From this article on ActionFigureInsider.com about Playmates launching the VLD toyline in 2016:
âLetâs Voltron! Playmates Toys and DreamWorks Animation today announced plans for a new toy line based on the new DreamWorks Animation series Voltron: Legendary Defender, a re-imagining of the classic property featuring five teenage pilots and mystical robot lions, set to debut as a Netflix Original Series in 2016. Playmates Toys will serve as the master toy licensee and will create an expansive line of toys set to launch in spring 2017.â
and
âVoltron: Legendary Defender follows five unsuspecting teenagers as they are transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war and become pilots for five mystical robotic lions in a battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite their lions to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron. Voltron: Legendary Defender premieres on Netflix in 2016.â
LULZ. That ainât no fluke yâall. That loosey-goosey show bible and the initial story planning drafts/concepts must have had Shiro as a teenager. Oops.
Playmates got part of the message in time to slip-in Shiroâs age on his packaging, but why the discrepancy between the article in early 2016 and the 2017 toy release in the first place?
Obviously, things changed between the first story planning phases, the release of marketing copy to media, the release of production art assets to Playmates, and when S1 was made. There still would have been time to update that copy for Playmates and media in early 2016, given that S1 would have already been in production, with S2 to quickly follow by that time. The show-runners already knew before that article ran that Shiro was not going to be a teenager anymore (and likely many other toy-relevant details). Did they intentionally not update anyone who had a right to know, or did it just slip their minds? Did someone else in the chain of communication mess up? Did that disagreement over the design of the elemental icons take up a lot of time, or possibly include larger disagreements?
Since the first wave of toys were released in 2017, when Keith was in the Black Lion, they would have been designed for production and manufactured much earlier than that. Playmates canât turn around on a dime to manufacture toys (not to mention design the packaging) to match the seasons. They need to have the information of what will happen in a season way ahead of time. This is one of many banal-yet-important reasons why your show bible needs to be tight, and your character arcs well-planned out.
We can see the first wave of the toys in photos from Toyfair 2017. Thereâs even a Zarkon figure, and various toys that are clearly for young boys (prop swords, masks, and the like). I remember seeing these photos right after Toyfair and thinking that Zarkon figure was looking pretty cool looking for what it was.

Since Playmates was able to create a prototype of Zarkon ahead of Toyfair 2017, that means that they began the design phase in early 2016 before the show first aired (possibly before that even). This also means that they knew that Zarkon had the black bayard, so that much was planned out.
Then in Toyfair 2018, Playmates had new toys, including prototypes for the Hunk, Pidge, and Allura figures, the HyperPhase lions, and the âStealth Modeâ translucent lions. Itâs worth noting that photos of the Pidge and Hunk paladin figures show up on the inserts in the 2017 toys as they were originally intended to be part of that wave.

So salty that Playmates cancelled these.

Pixel Dan asks about the possibility of a Lotor figure, and what happened to the other villain figures from 2017 (e.g. the Zarkon figure, and there was a prototype for another robeast other than Myzax). The rep says those were pushed back, and there âwill be more Lotorsâ (LOL) in the next phases in development. Iâm pretty sure he got Lotor confused for Zarkon.
Itâs important to note that Pixel Dan and the rep talk a lot about the slow distribution of the first wave of figures based upon what retailers were doing with their ordering and stock. That people werenât seeing them in stores. The rep explains that the toys are made in response to demand and thatâs also up to the retailers to order them, but thereâs also some comments that I interpreted as though they didnât have enough details about what to make in the first place.

The video above explains a lot about why Playmates had problems with distribution, as ALL manufacturers were-and-still-are having distribution problems. Itâs really hard to find toys at stores, my partner and I go hunting all the time, the lengths we go to are absurd.
Iâm certain that retail distribution problems contributed to demand for the toys and thatâs partly why they were cancelled. But this problem with the show bible also contributes because if Playmates had future season information when they should have, then they might have been able to design toys that more closely matched the show, thus boosting demand once it hit critical mass. I also wonder how much time they lost in the beginning due to the back-and-forth over the elemental icons.
Other merch, like t-shirts should also have been in production before 2017. They would have required details from the show bible as well. We could have had lion slippers yâall. Just sayinâ.
So about those Allura with the Red Lion t-shirts that @ptw30â mentioned in her post:

Someone (ptw30? headspacedad?) called these shirts to my attention privately a few months agoâafter S8 but ahead of Hot Topicâs recent new t-shirt releaseâand alarm bells went off in my head. Typically, this is the kind of error that youâd see in a knock-off, but these are officially licensed and they were linked to directly from the Voltron store page (at the time they had a re-direct promo image for merch on Amazon, in addition to what they sell on their own store page).
Descriptive text in the shopping page for all of the t-shirts of this style reads:
âJoin the Paladins Shiro, Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk and Coran as they combine their lion mechas together to form Voltron! Help them take on the Evil Galra Empire with these officially licensed Voltron: Legendary Defender graphic tees, pullover hoodies and popsockets!â
Coran eh? Interesting choice for text about combining lions. Why no mention of Allura on her own t-shirt? And what the hell is a popsocket?
On another Allura t-shirtâwhich also has different product specification text indicating that itâs probably not manufactured by the company that made the t-shirts aboveâhas descriptive text that reads:
âVoltron is the classic cartoon series that began in the early â80s. It is an animated show that brings back the nostalgia of classic cartoon fever. Not to mention a popular show pretty much stole the idea. (starts with pow- ends with -angersâŚ.) Voltron will always be number #1! This womenâs juniorâs shirt features a high quality character design of Princess Allura and Blue Lion.â
Why are they dragging Power Rangers in the text for an Allura t-shirt?
And actually, itâs incorrect. Power Rangers aka Tokusatsu Sentai shows came first. Voltron/GoLion descends from the combining mecha genre that began with Go Nagaiâs Getter Robo series in the 70s, which was influenced by the Tokusatsu Sentai shows. So no, Power Rangers didnât steal that idea.
Did anyone involved with VLD do their homework other than Tim Hedrick and May Chan?
We can see here that the t-shirts that are available on the Voltron store, and whatâs available on Amazon are not always the same, even though the shirts say they are officially licensed. Whatâs going on here?
Someâbut not allâof the t-shirts in the Voltron store list âFrom Trevcoâ in their description. Trevco.inc does licensing for branded merchandise, and selling t-shirts via Amazon appear to be one of their licensing product programs. Both DreamWorks Animation and Voltron: Legendary Defender are among the brands listed. Oh look, another layer in IP licensing cake!
Meanwhile, in the Hot Topic store, thereâs a completely different styleâin terms of aesthetic and designâof both VLD and Voltron DotU t-shirts being sold. I suspect that HT licensed VLD and Voltron DotU for in-house design, plus artist collaboration design, as these are exclusive for Hot Topic and Iâve not seen them anywhere else. That could mean they have a different kind of license than what Trevco and others selling on Amazon have. The t-shirts from HT donât list any other manufacturer on the label, other than being made in Haiti. I kind of want to buy that weird Allura with Red Lion t-shirt to just compare them. (Surprising no one, I bought the Lot//ura and Black Paladin Shiro t-shirts from HT).
The difference in style between whatâs on WEPâs Voltron store and Amazon, versus whatâs in Hot Topic is very interesting, and I assume it has a lot to do with demographics for their respective markets (perceived or real). In a traditional merchandize licensing agreement, WEP and/or DW would still have to approve any designs created byâor if artist collaboration withâHot Topic.
How long did that approval process take?
The recent release of t-shirts (Feb/March 2019) include a t-shirt with a scene from S5 (the chosen marks scene for Allura and Lotor). There are no MFEs, Atlas, white-haired Shiro, or anything else from S7-S8. There is a Keith t-shirt with his cosmic wolf, and a shirt with the Monsters and Mana designs, so they got something from S6.

The VLD Funko Pops came out in the end of 2018 but ahead of S8. Iâve seen them at Hot Topic, and online (Amazon, and BigBadToyStore.com), but I have not seen them at other retailers that carry Funko Pops like GameStop and Target. We go toy hunting to those all the time, in many different places. I guess that demographic of boys aged 9-12 just arenât interested in VLD to demand it at GameStop and Target. At least Hot Topic knows whatâs up.
The Funko Pops use Alluraâs uniform from S1-S2, and have two designs for Shiro (Black Paladin, and his black outfit). How long did these take to license and approve? Funko Pops are the lowest hanging merch fruit, so they should have been an obvious licensing choice by the end of 2016 once it was clear that VLD was a hit. But we didnât see these until just before S8?
Finally, apparently WEP and the Voltron Store donât mind those elemental icons that the show-runners hated, since they have a lanyard with them on it in their store (image below):
Itâs almost as if no one is on the same page!
If I didnât know any betterâoh wait, I do because this is kind of my thingâit looks like these elemental logos were designed to be like Boy Scout merit badges. Thatâs fitting as the toys were meant to be bought by boys aged 9-12, and are safe for children aged 4 and up. With over 15 years of professional design experience across multiple fields and domains of design, if I were designing these, thatâs exactly what I would have done from Playmatesâ end, especially if DW and WEP had told me that their target demo was boys aged 9-12.
Shouldnât the show-runners and Studio Mirâs very different design aesthetic have been made clear in the show bible and in any discussions and communications with Playmates (and whomever else was involved)? Who was responsible for communicating that?
To be clear, I like Studio Mirâs aesthetic much better, but what I like is irrelevant when weâre talking about toys and target demographics for marketing them, vs whatâs appropriate for merchandise that could be for all kinds of demographics.
Iâve been in situations where Iâve had to design in parallel with an outside agency, and in the dark with little communication between us. Itâs an awful position to be in, and Iâm surprised that DreamWorks didnât know better than to make sure that didnât happen between those designing for the show and Playmates and anyone at DreamWorks Classics and WEP that might have been involved in communications.
I spat out my coffee when I read that bit about the show bible, because damn, if youâve ever had to design an ad campaign (which can last for years!) with a half-assed or incomplete branding guide and little-to-no marketing and romance copy (let alone a style guide to help your copy editors write it), then youâre looking at a huge mess once that thing finally gets finished.
How did DreamWorks not catch that?

Warshaw: Charmed Atlanta United to face first big test with Martino leaving

Atlanta United announced on Tuesday morning that head coach Tata Martino declined his contract extension and would not be returning for the 2019 season. It shouldnât come as a surprise to anyone â rumors have been swirling for weeks. Yet itâs still a big moment for Atlanta, and their first serious inflection point. Theyâve been on an exponential rise since they announced their club, and Tataâs departure marks the first potential obstacle they need to overcome.
The Five Stripes have built something incredible over the last two years. They have a successful, entertainment product on the field; a passionate, engaged fanbase; and a brand recognized on multiple continents. Martino has been the man to lead them from a concept to a potential champion. They must not venture into their unknown.
Tataâs departure is bad because:
Tata has built something special. Change is always risky. Atlanta have been one of the top two teams in MLS all season and will head into the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs as a favorite. They play fun, entertaining, effective soccer. Will the new guy be as good as Martino?
Tataâs name recognition carries a unique influence. When he calls to recruit someone, that player will answer the phone. Players around the world want to play for the guy who managed Barcelona, Argentina, Paraguay and Newellâs Old Boys. Atlanta United can lure players that other clubs cannot because of Martinoâs status. Miguel Almiron has repeatedly stated Martinoâs importance in his recruitment to Atlanta.
Tataâs personality has helped shape the soul of the club. Club executives didnât bring Martino in to just coach the team; they brought him in to build a club. He had to set the path, both on and off the field, for what the organization would become. And the Five Stripes have become the coolest thing in Atlanta. That wouldnât have happened with a boring guy in charge. Martinoâs cool. He walks with a smile and wears the sweater over his shoulders even when he obviously wonât wear it just because he wants to look good and he laughs off critical questions like heâd never spend a second worrying over something so frivolous. Heâs someone weâd want to get a coffee with or have over for Thanksgiving dinner. His image has set the image for the club.
The new coachâs first task will be Concacaf Champions League. He or she will have a shortened preseason and then be thrown against tough competition. Atlanta are a club that expect to compete with the biggest teams on the continent. A quick CCL flameout could deflate their momentum and diminish some of the sparkle.

Itâs fine because:
Coaches often start to lose their influence over a team sometime in or around the third year in charge. Itâs hard to keep players on their toes and motivated (or scared) for three years. World-renowned coaches like Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Marcelo Bielsa and Luis Enrique have recently sought a change of scenery after three years. Tataâs leaving a year ahead of the timeline, but major decisions are always made too early or too late, and itâs unclear which is worse. Had he stayed the full year, perhaps that year-three syndrome would have taken effect.
If you want to be a club that brings top talent in, you also have to be a club that moves top talent on to where they want to go. Tataâs value increased while with Atlanta United. It might be a blow to lose him now, but it sets an example that Atlanta can then take to any top player or head coach.
Teams might start to figure Atlanta out as some point. Atlantaâs playing style has been clear from day one under Martino â play out of the back, crush teams on the counter, counterpress in the final third â and they rarely deviate. In their defeat last month to New York Red Bulls, for example, Red Bulls boss Chris Armas was able to build a specific gameplan because he knew exactly what Atlanta wanted to do. When it was clear Atlanta was getting out played in the first half, Martino had his team stick to their usual routine. A similar comparison around MLS right now would be Columbus Crew SC this year. Columbus have struggled in the second half of the year. Itâs important to have a specific philosophy for a team, but that philosophy will be implanted to opponentâs brains at some point.
In the short term, I donât expect Tuesdayâs news to be a factor on the rest of Atlantaâs season. Atlanta players have been reading the news just like you and me. Theyâve had time to mentally prepare. And itâs been clear for a while that this would probably be the last year with Atlanta United as we know them. The roster, in addition to the coach, could be in flux this offseason. Anyone in the locker room should have recognized that this is a special season and a potentially small window.
If anything, the news could be a good thing for their trophy run this year. It cements that nothing is certain for the future. They wonât fall subject to the âOh, being this good is easy, weâll make it back here next yearâ syndrome. With Tataâs departure, next year may look very different.
Itâs up to Atlanta, and their quest to be the dominant club in Major League Soccer, to ensure that it doesnât. Â
