All this discourse over Kataang and Zutara is so fucking exhausting. Like, I’ll be looking through the Zutara tag tryna find a cute lil thing to read and all of a sudden 50 people are bashing and hating on the ship. Now, I can’t speak for kataangers and whether they see the same shit on their tag but I’m sure it’s true. Y’all, literaly just stick to your ship and… Enjoy it??? Is it really that hard to watch other people enjoy a ship??
Now for a personal message:
Kataangers- YOUR SHIP IS CANNON!!! You have nothing to prove! It’s cannon!
Zutarians- I respect the dedication to the ship. But you have GOT to stop provoking Kataangers😭 (Kataangers also need to stop provoking)
How long has this been going on for??? How many circles have y’all gone through??? Is this not FUCKING EXHAUSTING!?
(I’m going to tag both Kataang and Zutara so just so y’all know: I ship Zutara. If you come onto my blog looking for Kataang content, you won’t get it, but that doesn’t mean I won’t welcome you!)

the craziest Thing in the atla fandom is
that ppl forgave zuko for being sexist, racist, classist and burning down a Village
BUT WILL N E V E R get over Katara saying
" then u didn't love her like i did" when she was upset and feeling like she was the only one who still cared and couldnt let go
INSANITY

It’s just interesting to observe the differences in how people treat Zukka vs how they treat Zutara. Because I searched Zutara on TikTok to look for some edits and the comments were filled to the brim with people saying “But Katara belonged with Aang 🥺” or “How can you ship Zuko with her after Mai said such a romantic line?” Or perhaps the most insufferable of all “Maturing is realizing that Zuko would’ve thrown himself in from of lightning for ANYONE” as if that’s some revolutionary reading of the text. It’s so irritating how this kind of behaviour is…accepted by the fandom.
But you don’t get that with Zukka, instead you see people gushing over how sweet they are together, hailing it as a wholesome and unproblematic ship, praising artworks of it with positivity and appreciation. It’s difficult to find much negativity under Zukka posts, you won’t see people saying “But Sokka belongs with Suki 🥺” or boldly going on a tangent about how another ship is SO much better. I saw one person praise Zukka as the most unproblematic ATLA ship because of how little conflict there was about it, that you wouldn’t see the same hostility among that fandom as you might with Zutara.
But there’s a reason for that which has less to do with Zutara shippers themselves, and more to do with the harassment and hostility they face on all sides of the fandom. Fans will go out of their way to antagonize Zutara shippers, they’ll feel brazen enough to leave backhanded or outright hostile comments under Zutara posts and art, they’ll interject their shipping opinions in spaces where nobody asked and condescend Zutara shippers by framing them as shallow or delusional for shipping it.
I think Zukka is admittedly cute, and they definitely have their haters, but the difference between it and Zutara is astounding. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch this phenomenon play out, especially when these shippers carry themselves with a kind of false moral superiority that can only be found in shipping discourse.

It's always "No I don't hate A@ng or Ma! I just want to criticize how their characters were handled", and never "They're fictional and you're offended on the behalf of literal nothing".
Ps: Zks say what you gotta say to avoid harassment. I don't hate them either. It's just absurd that hating a fictional character that doesn't exist is something to be denounced in order to be taken seriously.

god the atla tag is just going to be unlivable until the show comes out and (hopefully) the gifmakers step up, isn't it?
"no wonder the creators left" BRYKE LEAVING IS A GOOD THING THEY WERE HACKS WHO ABSOLUTELY SUCKED AT THEIR JOBS AND THE ONLY REASON ATLA WAS AS GOOD AS IT WAS FOR THE TIME (it does not hold up nearly as well as some of you think it does) WAS BECAUSE OF THE WRITERS IN THAT ROOM WHO WERE COMPETENT AND NONE OF THEM WERE NAMED BRYAN OR MICHAEL.
Also, the fact is that there are SO many more asian and indigenous people in front of the camera AND behind it than have been involved with any installment of this franchise to date, maybe give them a chance to tell the story that the white men who created it mined their cultures for aesthetics to dress up?

A little Azula rant:
I really hate it when people say “Azula couldn’t have been redeemed because it would ruin her storyline”
RUIN THE STORYLINE FOR WHO?!
I’m sorry, but if you couldn’t have thought of a better way for Azula’s storyline to go, that’s your problem. Team Aang had no problem having two non benders on the team, why couldn’t both Zuko and Azula be on it? Why couldn’t Zuko join up first (and sooner) and then after all Azula has done, through the efforts of Zuko and herself, finally realize she was nothing more than a weapon to Ozai and join up with her brother and the others later?
You could have your cake and eat it too, the affects of Ozai’s abuse making Azula break off less sooner than Zuko but still having her redemption once she does.
Why is Azula failing, taking the fall and being chained up by the NECK in jail the only way for her story to work?
This mentality REEKS of “Perfect Victim Mentality” and it’s gross.

i already have so many gripes with the original show and how they handle aang’s character arc and his relationship with katara/how they disserviced her by putting her in that relationship and i don’t trust netflix to fix ANY of that in the slightest, in fact i think they’ll probably make things i actually like about the original even worse and the actors are so young too oh my god Kiawentiio get behind me and it’s gonna be another horde of new fans rehashing the same tired old discourse i cannot do this again helpppp

ATLA: Nobody is born good or evil.
Fandom: Azula was born evil, therefore she deserves to be killed. Only then will Zuko find true peace😌

really telling how every other chucklefuck who talks about atla won't shut up about katara needing to apologize for what she said in the southern raiders, but no one ever even suggests that aang should apologize for crumpling up and hiding hakoda's letter and mocking and belittling southern water tribe culture, nor does anyone say sokka should apologize for years of misogyny directed at his own little sister who HE ADMITS looked after him after their mom died. funny how that works.

"Genuinely asking ppl not to watch the show because they removed (insert plotline)"
Genuinely asking people to actually read the articles whose headlines they're quoting as fact. Or even confirm that the article EXISTS and wasn't A: made by a parody Twitter news account or B: a stranger on the internet making a joke.

So...it has recently come to my attention that one of my friends who wished to remain anonymous had recently been harassed in real life due to their views concerning ATLA. Specifically on the topic of incest shipping and opinions on certain characters.
Now, I have talked about proships before on my blog and have admitted that while I do NOT ship it, I have friends who do. So let me make this perfectly clear to anybody reading this: supporting incest shipping is never an excuse for irl harassment. There is a huge difference between a problematic ship for fictional characters, and supporting real life incestuous relationships. I thought we were mature enough to make the difference between fantasy and real life, but I guess I was mistaken.
And for godssake, can we talk about characters without turning it into a minefield?!? I get it. You get invested in a character and you get annoyed when people talk about them in a less than appreciative fashion. I've been there. And I get the need to defend them. But has it ever occurred to anybody that you could...oh I don't know...make a post yourself defending your position without having to drag anybody else through the mud? Or do something so cowardly and underhanded as harassment in real life?! NO character should be worth that. Hell, if the character you're defending were real, they'd be downright DISGUSTED with what you were doing in their name.
For fuck's sake people, no work of fiction is worth this level or ANY level of harassment. Hell, it's stuff like this that turns fandoms incredibly toxic and can sink any possible interest in a franchise. You're not helping anyone. You're just making things worse. So to anyone who ever thinks of going through with some form of harassment, just ask yourself if this is really worth scaring and bullying people over. And if you decide yes, then maybe you shouldn't be in this fandom in the first place.

1, 6 and 7 for the choose violence ask game
1. the character everyone gets wrong
I was going to say Raava and Vaatu, but unfortunately I think that doesn’t count because I’m comparing to my own convoluted headcanons, not canon. Although I think they’d be far more interesting if Raava was treated as an unreliable narrator and LoK explored more on Vaatu’s impact on the seasons past 2.
As far as fandom vs canon, I’d say Azula. I find the two popular stances on her are either that she’s inherently evil and deserves the awful ending she had, or that she’s an innocent cinnamon roll who did nothing wrong. I find both stances to be pretty ableist-because one demonizes her, especially with the kind of language and arguments those fans use, and the other infantilizes her. I think she’s a far more complex character than that.
6. which ship fans are the most annoying?
I have to say that most popular ships in the AtLA fandom have really insufferable fanbases (except sukka, which I find to be really chill), but Zutara fans bother me the most.
7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?
Hmmm I must say Zuko, unfortunately </3. I do love him still but his fanon self is incredibly out of character-I fear he suffers HARDCORE infantilization from his fans. Either that, or people treat him like he’s an irredeemable shitbag and redemption arcs are Bad actually in retaliation to the first fans. So I guess I don’t hate Zuko, but I dread all conversation about him.

It’s a bit of a self-own to express pride that the Zukka shipping base doesn’t produce many essays or meta analysis on the ship. That kind of content and engagement with the text is arguably one of the best things a fandom can do when it comes to shipping. Of course, not everything has to include in-depth analysis because sometimes you just want to ship something based on vibes and a dynamic you like. But…it is kinda odd to see this be touted as some amazing quality to the Zukka crowd (particularly when it’s a not-so-subtle dig at Zutara shippers).
To me, it reads as them trying to prove themselves as “humble” shippers by constantly trying to prove how unseriously they take it. But like…you can take it seriously? I don’t ship Zukka, but I see the appeal and can understand why that dynamic appeals to people, so it puzzles me that a bunch of Zukka shippers pride themselves on this front. Maybe they should consider channeling their energy into writing metas instead of constantly trying to prove that they’re above Zutara shippers lol

lol you just know all those "well zutara is bad cause colonization or something" arguments are all bad faith cause like 50% of the time u take a look at the blog that is saying that and they wholeheartely shipping zukka, like i guess the colonization argument doesnt apply if its sokka then.
There's so much 'it's ok if it it's gay' hypocrisy going on in that side of the fandom and it's just so funny to me. Especially when it's coupled with trying to give z/s all the zutara moments and dynamics rather than leaning into Zuko and Sokka's canon dynamic, cause at that point what it tells me is that they really do wanna just ship zutara but they're allergic to m/f ships and don't wanna admit it
So they make up reasons why zutara is bad and problematic, ignore the fact that all of those reasons apply just as much to z/ukka because 'it's ok if it's gay' and then pretend they 'solved' the ship war (by removing the girl the war centered around from the equation). But it's really just hypocrisy all the way down and also probably more than a little jealousy, so at this point I just have to laugh.
And even the people who ostensibly apply the same argument to z/ukka won't say boo about ships like jetko or jinko and I think that's ultimately because neither of those ships are very popular so they aren't a 'threat' to the canon ships the way zutara is for some reason. (I will never understand why k/ataang shippers are so damn insecure. Like even if on the remotest chance the endgame ships in the netflix adaptation are different, it won't affect canon in any way, so WHY do so many of them have such a bug up their ass about zutara being so popular?)
Anyway, I maintain that jetko is the m/m ship that actually deserved to have the massive surge in popularity during the renaissance that z/s got and I'm still bitter about it cause jetko actually has the sauce. (And allows for my favorite atla ot3 without a whole lot of contortion hehe)
