Entry 2: Design Innovation Of A Sports Venue
Mercedes Benz Stadium
As the world advances so does technology leading to greater marketing opportunities for organisations when planning for the creation of a new stadium. The world most innovative stadium is Mercedes Benz Stadium, which can be found in the United States in Georgia.
Mercedes Benz Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium, which hosts events such as the NFL, MLS as well as music performances from artists like the Weeknd, Luke Combs, Elton John and Coldplay. The stadium acts as a home to the Atlanta Flacons and Atlanta United Football Club, which can be filled with up to 71,000 screaming fans and supports.

As a multi-purpose stadium it is built to cater for different sporting and social events, the stadium can be modified to adapt to the needs of the host for who ever and what ever.
The stadium was designed around a few major features that make the spectacle truly unique. One of these being the “pinwheel”. This feature is the roof, designed to retract itself allowing the venue to be either indoor or outdoor for the event. Mercedes Benz bought the naming rights to the stadium which included them to put their logo on top of the retracting roof, making the modern designed stadium truly a piece of art. The roof is made up of eight triangle pannels all of which with sharp edges, these run across two parallel rails which allows all eight sections of the roof to retract simultaneously as the sharp edges precisely glide past one another.
The innovative roof design of the roof was inspired by the Roman Pantheon, architect Bill Johnson designed the structure directly from the Pantheon. A point of difference and what makes Mercedes-Benz Stadium so unique is that it was made “from top to bottom”(Owens, C 2018). This being the opposite to a traditional building, as the art on the roof was the true spectacle of this now world renowned stadium.
The material used to design the roof is clear so that the famous Antlanta Skyline could be seen from within the stadium, this material was made from a lightweight flexible material which increased the practicality of opening and closing the roof.

Another design innovation is what is seen within the stadium seats, a huge circular halo is displayed from the venues roof. This halo is a ginormous video board, providing fans to feel closer to the action of the game then ever before! Halo board also allows the stadium and hosting clubs an opportunity to use sponsor advertising to monitor their products and increase return on investment.

Sustainability Practice of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium
In this day and age, sporting venues are starting to become more and more sustainable in order to reduce the amount of waste produced. When the Mercedes Benz Stadium was designed, the owner set a goal to not only be beautiful to the eye, but beautiful to the environment as well. This stadium, which is home to the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL and the Atlanta United FC of the MLS, is the first professional sports venue to achieve the Platinum LEED certification in the United States and the most sustainable sports venue in the world (Mercedes Benz Stadium 2020). ‘LEED was created through a consensus process involving many stakeholders to help move the building industry towards more sustainable practices’ (Sepani & Rajitha 2015). This certification is a system used for rating the design and construction of how sustainable and environmentally friendly high-performance buildings are. To achieve this sort of certification and set a global standard, the Mercedes Benz Stadium has many measures in place.
Altogether, the stadium has a 29 percent less energy consumption rate than the average stadium, mostly due to its energy efficiency and renewable energy projects (Climate Action 2018). 4 thousand rooftop solar panels give the stadium enough renewable energy to power the stadium for 13 Atlanta Untied FC games or 10 Atlanta Flacons games and to add to that, the 82,500 square feet of LED lighting and LED video screens last 10 times longer than the normal lighting which ultimately reduces the amount of energy used by as much as 60 percent (Mercedes Benz 2020). With all the energy saved, this can help the local electric plant give much needed energy to the residents of Atlanta. The stadium also uses 47 percent less water than the baseline standards for stadiums due to water efficient fixtures. In addition to this, over 2 million gallons of storm water can be stored on site which helps the neighouring areas from flooding (Mercedes Benz Stadium 2020), which have been affected by this catastrophe in the past. Recycling is urged in and around the stadium with multiple recycle bins everywhere around the premises. The stadium is also equipped with electric vehicle charging in their parking lots (Mercedes Benz Stadium 2020). This promotes the use of electric cars that have zero carbon emissions which ultimately help the air in the environment. The Mercedes Benz Stadium has repeatedly shown why they have an LEED Platinum certification and setting a global standard for every other sporting venue.

With the Atlanta Flacons recently acquiring Todd Gurley I think they are now a real threat in the NFC. They now have Gurley to go with pro bowl quarterback Matt Ryan and outside they have pro bowl wide receiver Julio Jones. I believe now that the Falcons could make the playoffs with their new running back and have a chance to even go further. Gurley is a hard hitting running back and I think this is the best thing that the Falcons could do in hopes of turning their seasons around.
