IT WAS LATE SATURDAY NIGHT, AND AS
the stars painted the mid-summer night sky like a thousand lightning bugs in a dark forest, the cool breeze sending a chill down the brown haired boys back. hugging himself tightly, he took notice of the constellations above his head, the millions of twinkling lights.
her favorites, he thought, gazing up at the objects with such intent.
perhaps, had he been quicker, had he been nicer, had he just said those simple words sooner, she would be here sitting beside him. but, she was gone. she was one of the stars now. and maybe he was ok with that. maybe he was happy the girl he had loved for so long was finally at rest. yet another part of him told him to be furious, not at her, but at himself. furious for not realizing sooner the pain she was in. annoyed for brushing her off so many times. pissed for the fact that he thought everything was ok when in reality the walls she had spent so long to keep up were crumbling down around her, and there was no one there to help the frail girl rebuild them. he knew the moment she didn't come to the fields to help him farm the next day, she was hurt. maybe it was his brain going into overdrive, telling him he should've stayed awake longer. checked on her more often. he should've been there just like he promised. but he wasn't. he was sound asleep while she sat in her bed, the remains of her walls being knocked over as if they were made of legos, not stone. turning his gaze back to the stars, the teenage boy noticed the way in which they all shone. he knew no two stars would be the exact same, but it seemed to the tired boy they all blinked at the same time, like a light switch being turned on and off. he could remember her voice, the way it spoke with such syrup-like sweetness as she told him facts about the stars.
"𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴?"
"𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵, 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴."
"𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳. 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯-𝘣𝘭𝘶𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘧𝘺 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳."
"𝘪 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳."
"𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘪 𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘴."
he wished he had taken the conversations more to heart, barely remembering what she had said most nights.
"𝘧𝘶𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵, 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘭𝘦."
they don't twinkle because of how bright you shone, they knew that even if they did twinkle, you would be the only star people payed attention to, his thoughts were paused as the brown eyed boy took one more gaze up at the sky, noticing the crescent moon at its peak. the way the moon casted a shadow overhead was almost intoxicating, the craters on it adding colors that the boy never thought he'd see in his life.
“carl, it's getting cold outside, come in." michonne called from somewhere behind him, yet the teenage boy was so captivated by the world around that he paid no mind to the words she in which she spoke.
"just give me five more minutes, she always liked it outside, so i want to spend as much time as i can out here... to honor her."
“they’re having an official burial for her on wednesday, you should go.”
"i want my last memories with her to be the happy ones, or at least as happy as they can get."
"well, find a way to find happiness in going. she would have wanted you to attend, if she was as nice of a girl as you said she was."
"yeah, it's selfish of me."
"it's not selfish, it's love."
"why did it have to be her, why couldn't it be me?"
"who knows dear, but if she was here and not you, she would be in just as much, if not more, pain."
"is it possible to re-write history? to change it?"
"no one can rewrite history and change the past."
"but what if we did.. what if we at least tried?"

WITH YOU II | AN APARTMENT IN ATLANTA
Daryl Dixon x Charlie Reed
Summary: In searching for Beth, Carol and Daryl find a shelter in an empty apartment.
Warnings: none
Words: 1,108
The apartment in Atlanta stood as a souvenir of a bygone era, a testament to the opulence and extravagance that once defined someone who lived there. As Daryl and Carol stepped inside, they were met with a grand foyer adorned with marble floors, polished to a gleaming shine despite the passage of time. A chandelier, now dim and dusty, hung from the ceiling, its crystals catching the faint light filtering in through the broken windows. The walls, once painted, now bore faded remnants of their former grandeur, the paint peeling and chipped in places.
Moving further into the apartment, they entered a spacious living area, where plush sofas and armchairs sat atop snow white, fluffy rug that had seen better days. The kitchen with a marble countertop, stainless steel appliances now rusted with neglect, and cabinets adorned with intricate carvings. Daryl noticed the absence of all knives from the room, as he was looking for a possible danger.
Throughout the apartment, glimpses of the past peeked through the layers of decay—a grand piano in the corner of the living room, its keys dusty and silent; a collection of fine art lining the walls, now faded and obscured by years of neglect.
Despite its current state of disrepair, the apartment still exuded an air of faded elegance, a reminder of the lives that had once been lived within its walls. And as Daryl and Carol moved through the space, they couldn't help but wonder about the person who had called this place home. A person none of them were as they couldn't even imagine standing in a place like that now. A person whose life had been forever altered by the cruel hand of fate. A person that felt the fall more than anyone.
"Let's look around," Daryl said quietly.
Daryl cautiously stepped into the master bedroom, his boots sinking into the plush carpet beneath him. The room held a somber atmosphere, the faint light filtering through the dusty windows casting shadows over the remnants of a life once lived. His eyes scanned the room, taking in the faded grandeur of the space. As he moved closer to the dresser, his gaze fell upon a collection of photographs arranged haphazardly on its surface.
He wasn't a nosy person, and he couldn't care less about the person who lived here. However, the place was so out of place, he almost needed to see the face of its owner.
That's why he leaned in for a closer look. And there, staring back at him from the faded photographs, was Charlie - her bright smile frozen in time, her laughter echoing in his head, clenching his heart. She stood surrounded by her brothers, their faces filled with happiness. His heart broke a little at the sight. He never saw her so careless, so free, and happy. Her eyes were shining so bright, lightning her face...or maybe her face was lightning the photo. The moment was like a crash for Daryl, as he finally saw faces of her brothers, people so mystified that he wasn't sure if they were real.
But they were. Three tall, well built men that even Daryl would try to avoid. All of them handsome, all of them strong, and all of them gone. Three, because the last man was short and not so muscular; however, his eyes were the same as Charlie's.
His heart skipped a beat as he realized the truth -the apartment belonged to Charlie. The realization hit him like another a punch to the gut, filling him with a mix of emotions he struggled to comprehend. As he lingered over the photographs, his eyes caught sight of something glinting on the rug beneath his feet. Stooping down, he reached out and picked up the object—a delicate necklace, its chain tangled and tarnished with age. Turning away from the dresser, Daryl began to gather up Charlie's belongings, his movements methodical and purposeful. Each item he packed carried with it a piece of her past, a connection to the life she had left behind. And it was only fair to give it back to her.
He emerged from the master bedroom, a sense of purpose guiding his steps as he made his way to the office where he had left Carol. Pushing open the door, he found her standing before a large painting that adorned the wall, her gaze fixed on its intricate details. A thought flashed in his head: how Charlie would like something like that and why she would want to hang it in her living room. "It's horrible."
His mumble was well heard. Carol turned as she heard Daryl's approach, a faint smile playing at the corners of her lips. "I like it. I would like to have something like that," she said softly. "I think Charlie would've liked it."
"Yeah," Daryl murmured, his voice tinged with emotion. "She would've."
Carol turned to him, her expression curious. "What's wrong, Daryl? You found something in there?"
Daryl hesitated for a moment, the weight of his discovery pressing heavily upon him. "This... this is Charlie's apartment," he confessed, his words hanging in the air between them.
Carol's eyes widened in surprise, her hand instinctively reaching out to grasp his arm in support. "Are you sure?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Daryl nodded, his jaw set with determination. He took out and thew on the desk one of the photos he had found. For a moment, there was silence as Carol absorbed the weight of his revelation. She started looking around the apartment in shock.
Then she looked at the man, who became even more troubled and insecure. "Have you already told her?"
"Told her what?"
"That you're in love with her." Carol studied him intently, her expression softening with understanding. "You should, Daryl. She needs to know how you feel."
Daryl's chest tightened at her words, a surge of conflicting emotions swirling within him. "It ain't that simple, Carol," he said, his voice rough with uncertainty. "There's...I could be her father. I'm an old man."
Carol's brow furrowed in concern, her gaze steady as she met his eyes. "That doesn't matter, Daryl. What matters is how you feel. Age is just a number...And your last concern in those times."
Daryl sighed heavily, his shoulders slumping with the weight of his insecurities. "I ain't exactly the type of guy she'd go for, ya know? She's... she's smart, and kind, and... and I'm just..."
"You're Daryl," Carol interrupted gently, her voice firm with conviction. "And that's all she needs. Someone who cares about her, who'll protect her no matter what."
"Mmm."

I remember one time I was talking with my friend Jacob about me going to Atlanta for a friend’s wedding and he said,
“Bro in Atlanta, be careful, you could get shot.”
…
I live in Florida, I live an hour away from the shark bite, the lightning strike, and the meth capitals of the world.
Two hours south from where I live someone got high on bath salts and ate someone’s face off.
Thirty minutes north of my house, right now, there is a lake filled with over 10,000 alligators. And sometimes during hurricane season those gators get LIFTED FROM THE LAKE. AND LAUNCHED INTO NEIGHBORING BACKYARDS.
SHARKNADO STYLE.
Do you THINK. I’m SCARED. OF YOUR BULLETS?

The lost community of Lightning
A 1962 map from the Atlanta-Fulton Planning Board shows where Black households were located in the city, as a way of mapping what was termed as "negro expansion."
You can find similar maps throughout the GSU Digital Collections. Planners kept track of where Black communities were located -- especially low-income ones -- often to peg a place as being ripe for "renewal," which appears to have been code for: "erase this place and fill it with something that appeals to white suburbanites."
The area immediately to the left of the map legend was the location of a neighborhood called Lightning, which was partially demolished to make way for the Georgia World Congress Center, and the remaining pieces were demolished prior to construction of the Georgia Dome in the 1980s.
See the second image for a look at this same area now. The land on the north side of the Mercedes-Benz stadium is where Lightning stood.
The community might have gone undocumented and forgotten if not for the careful work of an Atlanta journalist.
In 2017, local writer Max Blau did a deep investigation of the history of the neighborhood which was published in Bitter Southerner.
In the wake of that investigation, Councilmember Michael Julian Bond wrote an ordinance for creating a commission to develop some kind of memorial for Lightning.
I've sent an email to his office to find out if anything came of that. From my own brief search, I couldn't find any evidence in Council records that the commission ever met and produced anything, but hopefully they did.
I'll update with whatever I find out from Bond. I think there absolutely should be something that recognizes that people lived here. And I'd like to see a lot of other recognition of where people lived before neighborhoods were demolished for various urban renewal projects in Atlanta.

favorite hockey father adopted son relationship
three cities you think deserve a team in the future
create your own hockey awards what would the first award be and who would you give it to?
12. favorite hockey father adopted son relationship
this is a difficult one because it is such a common and also . good dynamic. old man pavs and my comrade wyatt a good candidate but i think i have to go with ultimate dilf john tavares and his children mitchy and matt knies. about to make a controversial statement but i think notorious worm corey perry and notorious firecracker connor bedard are about to have THE sickest and twistedest evil parent/evil child dynamic
19. three cities you think deserve a team in the future
i wont say qc because frankly it's been said far too much but. here we go
atlanta . 3rd time will work i promise. not to praise the nhl but their two new expansion teams have actually done a REALLY good fucking job, not necessarily out of building a competent roster (i mean, vegas absolutely has done that and seattle looks alright so far) but by marketing the game and team to its city. i want whatever lone competent nhl management committee has done that to go back to atlanta. cmawn. please. please. please
houston . i understand the stars' current shtick is that they are the one team for the whole of texas but i firmly believe there's one thing better than being united through hockeyloving and that's SPORTS RIVALRY!!!!!!!. back to trashing the nhl: now that both the lightning and cats are allegedly good or at least competent they should market the hell out of the battle of florida. and you know what? they do not do that. houston v dallas though? texans are the albertans of america so you know they would be immediately down to watch a rivalry in the Sport Where You Are Allowed To Fistfight.
toronto (bear with me). what does the league have? an abundance of canadian fans all of whom seem to hate the leafs but most of whom live near toronto anyway. easy solution: give them a second team in the area thats not american (ew sabres) not out in Fucking Kanata (sorry sens) and that you can also conveniently market a battle of the centre of the universe . or something. it's always about the leafs !!
23. create your own hockey awards. what would be the first award and who would you give it to?
the bill barilko award for most iconically cursed player. current finalists are of course quinnifer himself and mcdavo. think i have to give it to connor atm tho considering. The Events.

Completely separate. The gist of it is that Logan and Oscar grew up in a small town and dated a little bit, but then Oscar went off to play college baseball and Logan was left behind. At the start of the fic, Oscar has just gotten into the MLB while Logan just released his first album and absolutely blew up, and now it’s impossible for Oscar to avoid thinking about Logan.
It’s split into three parts, each centered around a different album of Logan’s. I’ll put the song lists under the cut bc I am very proud of them. And yes, Logan is a country musician 😌

FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss Lightning Strikes Twice, Woman on the Run, Darwyn Cooke’s comic book adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker novels, which classic film noirs should be remade, Eddie’s novel The Distance and more. We wind up the show with a discussion of the notorious psychological thriller Who Killed Teddy Bear. On the cat front, we get a rare visit from Tizzy the traveling cat.

The dialogue of LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE was nuanced, subtle, wicked, I wonder what male author has also sustained that continuous level of repartee? At the amusement park towards the finale of WOMAN ON THE RUN, the life-size Laughing Sally made me think it was San Francisco - am I mistaken?
Sara
Any news of a restoration/screening/Noir Alley showing/home release for CANON CITY (1948)? Morse
Eddie has expressed his affinity for comic books in the past, have either of you read the Darwyn Cooke adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker books?
Nathanael from New Braunfels, Texas
Would Film Noir have existed if World War II had not?
John
Are there any classical Film Noir movies that might be worth a redo along the lines of NIGHTMARE ALLEY, with the chance of going back to original source material without the production code limitations?
Carlton, Atlanta, Georgia
In WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS Scalise keeps administrating what appears to be a nasal spray, but from my memory of Le Chiffre in James Bond isn’t it likelier that it is Benzedrine he’s inhaling?
Eric
One of my more favorite movies of recent vintage is EMILY THE CRIMINAL. What do both of you think about the film?
John - Brooklyn, N.Y.
I recently watched David Lynch's brilliant LOST HIGHWAY for the first time in several years and for the first time the very noir elements really stuck out for me. Is there another neo-noir with such strong sci-fi elements?
Joe on Long Island
My first question is for Eddie. Do you consider Alfred Hitchcock’s SPELLBOUND and THE PARADINE CASE – both starring your favorite actor, Gregory Peck – to be good representatives of noir films?
Anne, since you are a big fan of the Golden Era of Radio, were you a fan of the Alan Ladd radio series, BOX 13, and do you think it qualifies as a noir?
Loren, Chicago
Re THE DISTANCE. Couldn't find any definition for "Swansy hollow punch". Could you elaborate? Did you make up the fighters' names or are they real names pulled from the past Was this your first book-length effort? If not, what was?
Jay and Connie, Ann Arbor, MI
