Orange League, Episode 5 - Orange League! Mikan Gym.

First stop on the quest to challenge the Southern Cross/Orange Crew: Natsukan/Mikan Island, both of which are variants on the "natsumikan" fruit. While also confirming that yes, Lapras is officially part of Ash's team in the "Go into your Poke Ball and wait for me to call you out again" capacity.

For Ash's first Gym battle, he has to face the West Star Atsuki/Cissy (Localizers, why?). Gym Challenges are a bit different here. Ash's Pokemon have to compete with Cissy's in contests of skill rather than battles.

Squirtle matches Cissy's Seadra at Water Gun target-shooting, which leaves a Surfing competition between Lapras and Cissy's Blastoise. Lapras's Ice Beam allows them to take a frictionless win despite Blastoise's incredible power and stamina.

Blastoise can also do that with the right TM, but Lapras learns it naturally, and it's an idea that never occurred to Cissy. It's a typical Ash outside-the-box strategy rather than standard play. I think the Orange League's peculiar method of Gym challenge is going to be good for Ash. His creativity is his best asset.

What never gets explained, however, is why the Gym building is a soda can.

That building has a pull tab. I demand answers.
