THE B. BOYS WERE MY NEIGHBORS IN THE '90s, AND NO ONE EVER TOLD ME.
NOTE: ^I used to live in neighboring Los Feliz for most of the nineties, but I was just a kid at the time with absolutely zero interest in hip-hop music.

Giamela’s Submarine Sandwiches, 3178 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039
Tumblr media
Giamela’s is a beloved local Italian eatery, serving Italian sub sandwiches, pizza, and pasta since 1964. They’re famous for their pepper steak subs. Subs are toasted upon request and they’ll also scoop out the bread if you ask them to. Look for the daily specials.
They have hot and cold subs – turkey, roast beef, ham, Italian cold cuts, ham, salami, pepper steak, sausage, meatball, etc. Sandwiches come in two sizes, regular and large. The subs come with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, dressing, mustard & mayo. They have several kinds of mayo – red pepper mayo, pesto mayo and regular mayo. Round out your meal with a soda and a bag of potato chips.
Lunch special: Turkey & capocollo regular sub and soda ($10.95): The sandwich looked expertly put together with red pepper mayo, the meat and cheese nicely layered, a huge amount of finely shredded iceberg lettuce in the middle, and the rest of the veggies piled on top – chopped tomatoes, chopped pickles, and chopped onions. The sub roll is a soft white roll with sesame seeds. The sandwich was put together like a loaded hot dog. The toppings fall off too easily. However, if you eat it carefully, every bite is a different mix of flavors and textures and the bread and veggies are fresh. The bread gets soggy fast.
The space looks older with the red & white checkered tablecloths you’d expect to find at an Italian eatery. They have old family photos hanging. There’s free parking.

Suspect In Custody After Standoff w/ police In Atwater Village...
ATWATER VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A man led police on a chase and then barricaded himself inside a stolen, bullet-riddled LADWP vehicle for more than two hours in Atwater Village Wednesday evening. The lengthy and bizarre standoff ended around 8:45 p.m. when law enforcement swarmed the man when he emerged from the stolen SUV and climbed onto the roof of the vehicle. His leg was wounded and…

Ritual Acai, 3199 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039, Score: 31/50
Tumblr media
Ritual Acai opened in 2020. They specialize in organic acai and pitaya bowls. You can build your own or choose a signature bowl.
Score: 31/50
Food: 4/5 – They have their acai and pitaya bowls and Brazilian snacks like the cheese bread that I like.
Coffee: 4/5 – I haven’t tried the coffee but they carry Brazilian coffee (supposed to be less acidic), tea, kombucha, and more. They also have smoothies.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, secure. Ask for the password. It worked fine and didn’t seem super slow.
Ambiance: 3/5 – A small space but cute with a neon sign and a few wood pieces that look like they came from Goodies.
Noise: 3/5 – They play lively music that you can hear outside but it’s not that loud
Plugs: 4/5 – Didn’t see any
Parking: 4/5 – You can usually find something in the neighborhood and park for as long as you want. There are free public parking lots as well.
Comfort: 2/5 – The chairs are uncomfortable and the tables are tiny.
Bathroom: 0/5 – I didn’t see one.
Art: 3/5 – They had neon signs.
Tips: They do not accept cash. You can also pick up some bottled drinks and grain cookies.

KEEPIN' IT GANGSTA-FRESH ON L.A.'s EASTSIDE -- ATWATER VILLAGE, BABY!
NOTE: I used to live in Los Feliz as a kid, from the mid '90s to 2000, right next door to ATWV but no one ever told me the B. Boys were making music just a mile away from me.
PIC INFO: Resolution at 1242x1223 -- Spotlight on the BEASTIE BOYS in front of their then own recording studio G-Son, photographed Glen E. Friedman, c. "Check Your Head" sessions, early '90s, Atwater Village, eastside of Los Angeles (NOT East L.A.), east of Hollywood, east of Los Feliz, CA.
"It was a clubhouse atmosphere,” says Caldato. “It was the most ideal setup that anybody could have.” Dubbed G-Son Studios, it’s where they recorded their third and fourth albums, "Check Your Head" and "Ill Communication." G-Son also became the headquarters of their record label Grand Royal, their magazine of the same name, and the Diamond-affiliated clothing label, X-Large. The steep metal staircase to its back alley entrance was used as a shooting location in the video for “Pass the Mic”  the first single from "Check Your Head.""

HomeState, 3170 Glendale Blvd, Unit A&D, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039
Tumblr media
HomeState keeps opening new locations and I’m happy about it. HomeState’s female founder, Briana Valdez, moved to Los Angeles and missed the Tex-Mex food, including breakfast tacos ($3.50 and up), anytime tacos, queso, brisket, migas, etc. They use pasture-raised eggs and that does make a difference. Breakfast is served all day but it seems to be busier around lunch time than early in the morning. There are vegetarian and vegan options. They have beverages, including margaritas. It’s the perfect brunch spot.
I was a regular for awhile because I love their migas. I tried a variety of things and the tacos are good but Classic migas are special. The tacos seem small but with migas, you get a lot of eggs.
Classic migas ($8.50): scrambled eggs with crispy corn strips, onions, cheddar cheese. The eggs are soft and fluffy, the cheese melted and stretchy, and the chips add a little texture. It’s like chilaquiles minus the sauce and with more eggs. Love dousing migas with their housemade red and green salsas and adding a housemade flour tortilla ($1) so that I can make my own breakfast burrito. The tortilla is served warm and a little thicker than your usual flour tortilla.
House coffee: Bitter but drinkable, free refills
Order at the counter and get a number. They’ll bring your order to you. The food arrived fairly quickly. The place is cute – the outdoor patio is covered and has music and string lights – a relaxing place for tacos. There’s a station where you can get hot sauce, salt, pepper, water, etc. The employees also check in with you to see if you need anything. Service is good.
