Welcome to FARAWAY TOWN. Ever since he left, it no longer feels like home.
Tumblr media
KEL
Tumblr media
KEL'S smile disappeared along with him behind a door on a cold night. Ever since then, the only sign of his existence has been his mother calling out his name a little too loud from time to time. What he’s been up to during the past four years, no one knows.
WEAPON: BOX CUTTER
You found it in DAD’S toolbox.
—————————————————————————
SUNNY
Tumblr media
After BASIL moved, SUNNY chose to distance himself from others, spending most of his time alone. Eventually growing tired of his parents' pressure and his sister’s paranoia, he made friends with THE HOOLIGANS, tagging along in their antics. Sometimes you'll hear the soft tune of a violin coming from the old TREEHOUSE, though SUNNY will deny it should you ask him about it.
WEAPON: BUTTERFLY KNIFE
Perfect for intimidation and tricks alike.
—————————————————————————
AUBREY
Tumblr media
A sweet and energetic girl, you’ll find AUBREY running all around FARAWAY TOWN looking out for anyone who might need her help. If she’s not at FARAWAY PARK practicing for her next softball match, you’ll find her at BASIL’S old house, taking care of the flowers alongside POLLY. Although her friends have drifted apart with time, AUBREY will never stop reaching out to them, always waiting for them in their old HANGOUT SPOT.
WEAPON: BASEBALL BAT
KIM and VANCE helped decorate it.
—————————————————————————
BASIL
Tumblr media
Ever since his grandmother’s passing, BASIL started spending less time at home, instead looking for a new subject matter to focus on. After one of his pictures caught the attention of several people, BASIL moved back to the city with his parents, traveling alongside them in order to find new inspiration for his pictures. Despite that, he’ll always have time to visit those he holds dear at FARAWAY TOWN, often stopping by the CHURCH to bring them flowers.
WEAPON: GARDEN SHEARS
They’re a little rusty, but they can still trim down any plant.
—————————————————————————
MARI
Tumblr media
SUNNY’S doting older sister, MARI chose to stay in FARAWAY TOWN instead of going to college, taking a gap year to ‘collect her thoughts’. Once so eager to show her skills, MARI is now reluctant to even play a simple song, her old piano doing nothing but gather dust with time. You’ll find her roaming around FARAWAY PARK looking for her little brother, always worried something might’ve happened to him, much to his annoyance.
WEAPON: HANDS
Better for playing the piano than fighting.
(I’m leaving some fun facts below, so keep reading if you’re interested!)
KEL
His hair is really messy. He doesn’t brush it at all.
Doesn’t talk as much as he used to.
Eye bags from lack of sleep thanks to the nightmares and SALLY.
SUNNY
His hoodie has cat ears!
He’s selectively mute. Hiding his face makes him feel more confident which is why he usually wears a mask. Has different masks.
Although he’s not as close with AUBREY as he used to be, he dyed his hair purple to honor the promise she and MARI made when they were younger. He’ll deny it if you ask, though.
AUBREY
Dyed her under hair pink after coming to an agreement with her dad.
She likes painting her nails but doesn’t do it often.
BASIL gave her the gladiolus bracelet before moving.
BASIL
He sewed the sunflower and blue rose patches on his bag to remember HERO his grandma.
Daisy hair clip! It was a gift from POLLY when she moved in.
Always wears a turtleneck (even in summer).
MARI
Her necklace has a rose pendant.
Hides eye-bags with makeup. Her eyes are always puffy.
Often hides her hands in her pockets to hide their shaking.

Tagged by @thecowboykatsuki-anon & @darling-millicent-aubrey !!! It was to do What color is your aura quiz and then create a mood board from it.
I ended up getting two diff answers for the exact same answers to my questions and they both fit so LOL you get both. I'm putting them under a cut and tagging: @dabisqueen @druidickats @stars-constellation-collection (Tumblr y u no tag) @miamaha!! (If you want to!)
Sky
short poems, teacups, clear skies, diaries, dripping icicles, tears, tennis shoes. your essence is sky: you are a hard worker and do not relent on something once you have begun. you are giving to all but yourself and pour from an empty cup; you want to be simple, self-sufficient, easy. you overflow with creativity but throw away your sketches before they're even done. you are the dauntless. you are the venturer. you find kinship in like-minded individuals of blue, navy, periwinkle, and seafoam, who likewise hold themselves to high standards. you are also drawn to the self-actualizing sage and apricot, who will help you grow and relax into your feelings. however, you may struggle to get along with the strict personalities of ivory and blush who seem overly critical.

Jade
islands, sketchbooks, rainy windows, pendants, puzzle pieces, tree frogs, sea glass. your essence is jade: you are withdrawn and observant, like a sailing ship watching others pass. you struggle between giving too much and too little; it is a hard thing to be both authentic and loved. your sensitivity makes you gentle to others. you are the spirit. you are the philosopher. you find kinship in like-minded individuals of seafoam, teal, blue, and green, who share your thoughtfulness and creativity. you are also drawn to the purposeful chartreuse and fire, who will help you grow and connect to the world around you. however, you may struggle to get along with the ambitious personalities of wine and terracotta who push too hard.

OSRR: 2977
i lost my phone earlier in the day while finding a gift for my cousin.
i ended up arranging for my parents to pick it up this evening. (i have it now. i hugged it when i got home.)
i also got to briefly chat with joel when i got my phone back this evening. i miss him.
and, well, the funeral was about as good as it could be.
and just an fyi, there's a tw here for death and funerals, of course.
there was a viewing. i spent a lot of time unable to look in that direction because that would make it real. but the good news is that besides the color of his complexion and his hands, it didn't look like him. it made it so much easier to be there. because nah, that wasn't tyler.
my cousin gave a beautiful eulogy and i'm confident there wasn't a dry eye in the place. she and tyler's friends gave beautiful speeches and told stories and it was really nice, actually. i cried a lot.
and then there was an afterparty. which is the oddest thing, but it was nice. too much stuffy environment is not something tyler would've wanted. he would've wanted a party. so that's what we did.
also because one time boo (my cousin) and tyler had a conversation about death, tyler said, "i don't care, just throw me in the garbage" or something. aubrey gave out little plastic garbage cans and opossum stickers as favors.
perfection, yknow?
because i was with my aunt and i wasn't about to tell her i didn't believe in god, i drank ginger ale. close to the end though boo walked up to me and handed me a drink and said "people keep buying me drinks. here." and i just kinda took a big gulp of it, discovered it was a vodka lemonade, shrugged, and then finished the rest of it in three big gulps.
and of course, it did nothing.
it was just good. which is so weird because i guess i drink things with a higher vodka content in it so i'm used to the bad flavor but this was a decent balance. i only wish the lemonade had been stronger, yknow? i'm tempted to make a container of lemonade that's got half vodka for the mix. or at least a third, yknow? maybe then it'd help. keep some in the fridge.
anyway, the after party was at a hookah lounge. that was cool. some of it smelled like raisins but Bad. how do you make raisins smell bad??
smh.
anyway there was also a raffle they did to raise money for boo as she deals with everything, and it was for a big basket of comfy things and aunt wendy won it. that was cool.
all in all, it was really nice to be able to spend time in an environment that was more upbeat with people who loved tyler.
also the gifts i got for boo went over well. i got her some crystals for healing. some of them are pendants, and some of them are stones she can keep in her pocket. i looked up stones that meant strength, perseverance, and courage, and i found those in as many things as i could. i wrote down the meanings and was able to give them to her, and she started crying. tyler had told her to "stop buying so many damn rocks" and im glad i was able to give that to her. good news man, she didn't buy them. i did. joke's on you lmao.
i guess the joke's on us, though, huh.
anyway.
thanksgiving is gonna be tough.
so is christmas.
i still expect him to come out of the back room wiping off his hands being like "what'd i miss" or "hey i fixed the faucet" or something.
yeah.

I fucking love taz, 75% of the time it's like silly goofs and whatnot but then sometimes they just go so hard on acting, character work, descriptions, all of it. Just heard Ned and Aubrey's confrontation after Aubrey finds the pendant and that shit gave me chills like holy shit

#20 “Don’t try to fix me. I’m not broken.” for Aubrey?
I ended up altering the line a little bit, to better fit the scene I had in mind, but it’s close enough. So here’s some rare evidence of Aubrey actually having emotions and being vulnerable and stuff, even if it’s only for a moment, and there’s no-one else around to see it. I think this is actually the first time that I’ve written for Aubrey, so that was pretty fun!
She scampered up towards the crow's nest, invisible to the night, her sure-footed steps across the rigging betraying a well-practiced familiarity with the route before her. Finally reaching the top, she hopped over the wooden railing, throwing down the pillow that she had been clutching in one hand, and collapsed down to the floor atop it, drinking in the view of the starlit sky above her.
The ship was near silent below, most of the makeshift crew that she had been able to pull together having headed off to find an inn to stay in earlier that evening when they had docked in Neketaka. Aubrey was glad for it. The peace and quiet helped remind her of the old days, back before she had become a Watcher; when it had been just her and the open road, on a hunt for her missing memories.
Well. Not just her, she supposed.
"Hey, Wael?" Eyes remaining skyward, Aubrey pulled herself up into a sitting position, back pressed against the railing as she tucked her legs up in front of her chest, wrapping her arms around them. "Everything's kind of blurry again. The memories. I guess it's because Eothas killed me. Which is rude, by the way. He smashed right up from under the temple I built to you and everything." She let out a long sigh, and the stars above twinkled, as if prompting her to continue. "I don't know if it's within your power to give me those memories back. Probably is. But even if it is, I wouldn't ask you to."
She paused a moment, sorting out her thoughts, hugging her legs tighter against her body. "I don't need you to fix me. I'm not broken."
Finally dropping her legs, she rolled off to one side, coming to rest on the pillow once again. Reaching up, she pulled at the leather cord that she wore around her neck, thumbing absent-mindedly at the small metal symbol of an eye that resided there. "But... could you maybe keep guiding me, the way you always have? Be there by my side while I try and piece everything back together again... again? I know that I'm kind of beholden to Berath now, for bringing me back, but... But, well, you're the one who's always been there for me."
"I'm sure there's plenty more mysteries ahead of us." She told the night's sky. "And pranks, and puzzles."
Finally tearing her eyes away from the sky above her, she cast her gaze downward, settling meaningfully on the holy symbol in her hand. "At least, if you'll still have me?"
For the briefest moment, she could have sworn that she saw the metal eye move on it's own, flashing her an exaggerated wink, and a wide smile began to spread across Aubrey's face.
Tucking the pendant safely back under her shirt, she turned her smile skywards, feeling as though a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. "Thanks! I promise that I won't let you down."

oh god i can't stop thinking about a TAZ Amnesty Moana AU ok please consider:
-Aubrey’s raised to be the chief of her village one day but feels Called to magic and the strange world outside of what she’s always known and even shows an affinity for it
-Aubrey for sure talks to magic and fire the same way Moana talks to the ocean
-But there’s the approaching darkness of the Quell that’s threatening to destroy her home and so it’s Hero’s Journey Time
-Ned takes Grandma Tala’s place as the elder that everyone thinks is crazy and eccentric and who also just so happens to know a shitton about the old legends, although he considers himself to be past the point of believing them
-But it’s all Aubrey has to go on, so she convinces Ned to join her and they go on a quest to awaken an entity called Sylvain and get her to defeat the Quell, since that’s the only way according to the stories
-(There’s also just a small part of that legend that mentions needing an orange pendant to restore the heart of Sylvain in order to awaken her, but Ned just chooses not to tell Aubrey about that one. All these stories are poppycock anyway.)
-But anyway he tells her that in order to get this shit done, they have to find a demigod that no one’s heard from in years
-Turns out that’s because he fucked off to a corner of the deep deep forest and has just been vibing for like decades because he was tired of everyone wanting him to fulfill quests just because he’s buff and godly and shit
-But Aubrey does convince demigod!Duck (who does in fact still resemble Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson) to come with them anyway and they have some battles together and he realizes that he has to face up to his responsibilities, especially because the more the darkness of the Quell spreads, the more vulnerable he becomes
-(Ned is both encouraged and increasingly nervous about how much these old legends are turning out to be prophecies)
-Also Beacon is a giant fish hook in this but otherwise he talks and acts in exactly the same way he does in Amnesty
-Anyway shenanigans ensue, the trio grows closer through all the danger, Aubrey’s skills in magic increase, and it seems like they’re getting closer and closer to finding Sylvain
-But then Ned just disappears as they come to the ritual place or whatever where they’re supposed to awaken Sylvain, and Duck and Aubrey can’t figure out how to do it with just the two of them
-What Ned can’t figure out is how he’s going to tell Aubrey that this whole time, he’s been hiding the magic pendant that’s kept him in good health for all his many years. The one he snatched when she was still a toddler, knowing its powers of eternal life but not just what it was. They’ve had the heart of Sylvain this whole time, among their group.
-He doesn’t have to tell her, though. Aubrey finds him as he’s looking at the thing, as he’s going back and forth. It’s too late for him to explain.
-She tells him to leave.
-She and Duck restore the heart of Sylvain at the ritual place and...nothing. She’s not awakened. Maybe there was never anything to awaken. Maybe she’s dead.
-Meanwhile, Duck’s powers are gone. They’re in the heart of the Quell’s darkness and he’s just a regular human now. He’s sorry. He can’t face this without his abilities.
-And then? Then Aubrey finds that Ned is dead.
-She’s failed at all of this. She doesn’t want any of it. She’s alone now and she just wants to go home while there’s still a home to go to.
-And then, from the pendant, there’s a light, and an outpouring of the strongest flaming magic she’s ever felt, and in front of her stands someone who could be her sister.
-She meets, for the first time, the goddess who’s been inside her this whole time. Sylvain embraces her. The spirit of Ned is there, too, forgiving and forgiven at last.
-And it’s obvs still a musical so as Aubrey finds herself surrounded by swells of warm bright magic in the dark and feels wholly enveloped in divine love she comes to the climax of her song and sings, “and the call isn’t out there at all, it’s inside me! It’s like the fire, always falling and rising. I will carry you here in my heart. You remind me that come what may, I know the waaaaay!”
-”I AM MOANA SYLVAIN!”
-I cry.
-She meets back up with Duck, who’s had a change of heart and doesn’t care that he doesn’t have his same powers. He’ll do what he can.
-And finally after it’s clear that fighting won’t do it, we see Aubrey walking calmly through a wall of fire as the huge black form and giant red eye of the Quell barrels toward her, destroying everything in its path. She just proceeds, sure in her own magic and relationship with Sylvain.
-And you know what even though I liked the fight against the Quell in Amnesty what we really deserved was Aubrey approaching it in peace and chanting, “They have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you. This is not who you are. You know who you are.”
-I cry, again.
-Also Dr. Bonkers is the cute pig

He is not a bad person.
"Edmund Chicane" tells himself that as he slowly inspects the safe he's trying to break into.
It's a matter of survival. He's broke, these people are not. He's not going to steal anything they'll really miss.
Still, as he slowly, meticulously turns the lock hoping to find the right combination, guilt eats away at him, tiny piece by tiny piece.
But the guilt is easily overshadowed by the anxiety. It's not his first time breaking into a place like this, but it damn near is.
He goes over his story in his head again and again.
He's Edmund Chicane, brother of three younger siblings, just trying to put food on the table.
Even if that crap doesn't get him any sympathy, the ID in his back pocket might just cause enough confusion to let him slip away.
There's no need for any of that.
Before he knows it, there's a click, and the safe swings open.
He quickly grabs most of what's inside : some money and a few jewels that look expensive, leaving behind some papers and a gun.
The guilt creeps back up on him when he catches a glimpse of a news report with a family crying about precious family heirlooms.
However, the guilt disappears almost as quickly as it came when he realises how comfortably he can pay for his meals that month.
Edmund Chicane is not a bad person.
He tells himself as much as he's sneaking passed the cameras in Clooney's mansion.
He can't be a bad person when he's restricting his thievery to one thing.
Sure, that thing is an Oscar, and, sure, he did take that nice watch on the table by the front door, but that's not really bad in any quantifiable way.
If anything, it's probably just going to help Clooney's career. Eventually, it'll become a funny story for him to talk about during fancy parties he goes to.
It's been a while since he's felt genuine fear at the prospect of being caught, but, this time, his heart jumps a little when the security guard starts to turn the corner while he's not yet entirely over the fence.
He gets away with it, of course he does. He's Edmund Chicane.
As he shows his prize to the few who know him, the bragging rights are entirely worth it.
Edmund "Ned" Chicane is not a bad person.
He reminds himself of that fact while in the van with Boyd.
He hasn't hit a mark like this in years, considering himself more of a Robin Hood kind of thief.
He steals from the rich and famous people at the top and gives back the loot. Mostly to his own benefit, but that's just a detail.
Stealing from a random suburban household, however rich they may be, feels unethical.
But, as much as he would like to say Boyd had to really twist his arm on this one, funds are getting relatively low, and some opportunities you just can't refuse.
He hesitates before taking the pendant, remembering his first real mark. But, it's glowing, bright orange and red hues covering the walls and objects near it.
If he doesn't take it, Boyd will, there's little doubt about it.
As soon as it's in his bag, it fades from his thoughts, especially as more and more things start to go wrong.
It's not until he's going through the bag he grabbed out of the van, hidden in the room given to him by Victoria of course, that he remembers the strange gem.
He is not a bad person.
Ned Chicane wonders how many times he'll have to repeat it before it becomes true.
He's slowly, meticulously, putting all of his things into boxes. The jewels, the Oscar, the other junk he's accumulated over the years.
He'd perhaps underestimated how painful being alone again would hurt him.
Or maybe it's just the realisation that he can't deny how rotten he is anymore; how rotten he's been since he started this dirty line of work
The items burn his hands as he packs them away, but, as much as he wants to, Ned knows he can't leave them here.
He can't have thousands worth of stolen goods attached to his name like that.
It doesn't take as long as Ned thought it would. In the blink of an eye, his storeroom is empty, save for his most recent acquisition.
He feels choked by guilt just looking at it.
He doesn't hesitate much before deciding to leave it where it is. They're going to find it eventually and it'll be returned to its rightful owner.
As Ned starts to pack up his boxes in his truck, he feels like the branches of the sculpture are staring him down, like dozens of judgemental eyes.
He wonders why he was too much of a coward to tell Aubrey as soon as he realised the truth.
He wonders why he was too much of a coward to tell Aubrey as soon as Boyd came back.
Only one answer comes to mind.
Ned Chicane is a bad person, and nothing, not even one of the two true friends he's ever had, will ever change that.

I WANNA TALK MORE ABOUT ADHD AUBREY
Like yeah, it gets acknowledged, but it's mostly surface stuff. Sure she's excitable and emotional and impatient but!!! I want more details
Like, I bet Aubrey chews her sleeves, and maybe that's part of why her jean jacket eventually became a jean vest, because she chewed on the sleeves so much over a long period of time and eventually they needed to Go but she was too attached to the jacket to just get rid of it - and that's a whole other ADHD mood, Aubrey has a real rough time with change. She's had the same aesthetic since high school for that very reason.
But yeah anyway she chews her sleeves and definitely her nails as well and eventually Jake introduces her to chewelry and it helps her a lot!! She finds some pieces that match her flame motif and everything :)
(Side note: Aubrey no wait that's not your chew pendant that's the Flamebright Pendant oh god she can't hear us no -)
Also, ever wonder why no one ever comments on Aubrey starting to wear sunglasses after her eye changed color? She already wore sunglasses a lot anyway because her sensory differences make bright lights hell, people were already used to it
Okay but Also? The girl has a Snack Problem. Like whenever her energy is flagging and focusing gets difficult her brain's automatic reaction is "eat some chocolate and we can go So Very Fast" and she impulse buys so many vending machine snacks!! Someone help her pls!
We all know that stage magic is one of her special interests but also? For like two years before she even got Dr. Bonkers rabbits and rabbit care were a special interest. She learned everything she could about how to care for rabbits, all about their breeds and markings, their temperaments and behavior, how to make a good rabbit habitat, etc. And of course she would infodump to anyone who showed even a little bit of interest. She made several powerpoint presentations for her parents all about rabbit care, and that was what finally convinced them to let her get one.
She loves fuzzy textures!! All of her pajamas and blankets are super soft and fuzzy, she has so many slipper socks, lots of stuffed animals, and whenever her undercut is freshly buzzed she can't stop rubbing her head because fuzzzzzz
Okay this post is long enough already, I just got so excited about Aubrey

Roleswap au in which Dani, Mama, and Barclabe are normal humans roped into the pine guard and Aubrey, Ned, and Duck live in The Lodge trying to protect the supernatural.
Features include:
- Friend Jake, Barclanes favourite waiter down at his breakfast diner
- Hollis, who, after being caught and saved in the woods by Mama from that bear abomination, went to work in city hall
- Pidgeon, who finds out about the supernatural and wants in, along with her rag-tag gang of troublemakers
- Dani with magic powers, probably manifests first as cold/ wind. She travels aimlessly. Dani has enough money a job is more a hobby than a need, and just... Drifts, for a while, before coming to Keplar. Duck catches her after she freezes some would-be muggers solid and takes her back to the lodge
- Mama the forest ranger with a big ole dog at home named Tobias, a destiny shes long since accepted but now fears will be her reckoning, and a talking gun
- Indrid as Minerva, lamenting his mistakes and yet being unable to really do anything, trying so hard but never being able to touch
- Minerva as an old, eldritch, twisting thing. She wears a choker around her neck. No one has ever seen it come off. She lives on the edge of town, haunted constantly by what she sees, and waits
-Aubrey is a werewolf, or the type of thing that would've inspired such stories. She wears a pendant around her neck, as the item concealing her form
-Dr Harris Bonkers (PhD) is the same, but this time he can communicate telepathically
-Duck the normal human in charge of the pine guard, really just doing his fucking best for he and his to not die. It's not going great
-Ned who keeps a collection of all the history of Silvaine, who tells stories at bedtime about all the wonders he'll never see again, Ned who takes off his scarf to reveal a fucking yeti, Ned who encourages the rumours and the cryptid theories because there's money in it

Arsonist's Lullubye (TAZ)
Hi, hello, it’s been awhile. I haven't formally written anything with the Amnesty gang, so here is a little angsty Aubrey Little drabble. I couldn't stop the connection between the song and some of herself, so I just started writing it down. Hope someone enjoys this as much as I do!
When I was a child, I heard voices Some would sing and some would scream
Good parents made sure their child felt loved. Aubrey Little thought her parents weren't just good; they were the best. The enthusiasm and compassion she was given followed her throughout her childhood. This made her social. She became a friendly face to anyone and everyone. School time was play time, full of singing loudly in talent shows and screaming laughter in games of tag. Her ability to be the center of attention, to command the room with her child-like dramatics, also followed her.
You soon find you have few choices I learned the voices died with me
She got older and kids got meaner. Suddenly Aubrey Little wasn't funny, she was weird. The whispers and rumors got the best of her. It felt like a wall of fire in between her and the other kids. It burned. She came home crying and didn't stop until her dad bundled her in the softest blanket and held her (not too tightly) in silence. When her mom came home, she found them asleep, nestled into the couch. Aubrey learned how to drown out the voices, but it took time.
When I was a child, I'd sit for hours Staring into open flame
Her mother never worried about how fascinating fire was to her. Candles scattered around the house had a strange habit of being off when she left the room and on when she returned. Somehow, putting all the lighters on top of the fridge stopped that occurrence. She really didn't mind. Her daughter would sit and watch the flame flicker with wide eyes, attention never quite on the task she was meant to do. The day she finally let little Aubrey light her own candles, she found every wick in the house burning and just smiled, fingers brushing the pendant around her neck.
Something in it had a power Could barely tear my eyes away
“The Lady Flame” came about with a passion. She can't remember how it even started, but a cheap magic kit and a felt top hat was the best Christmas present she ever got. Her parents never told her she was silly, or immature. Her dad ruffled her hair and told her to keep working on her act and her mom laughed and added “just don't burn down the house” before kissing her forehead and sitting back to resume the book she had set down. She did keep working, and with her new assistant Harris Bonkers (studying to get his PhD), she started real performances. Whether it was Jimmy Ainsley’s ninth birthday party or a talent show at school, she put her all into it.
All you have is your fire And the place you need to reach
Nothing meant more to her than her family. They fueled the fire in her and encouraged every development in her magic act. “If this is what you want, go for it.” Her dad smiled at her warmly. Most people said that fire was too dangerous to mess with, but it called to her in a way that no other trick did. No matter what, she incorporated fire into every performance. “It's like you're having a conversation with it.” remarked a judge during a show. The compliment only pushed her to do better.
Don't you ever tame your demons But always keep 'em on a leash
Burns weren't uncommon. Bandages could be found on her arms more often than not. Anyone who didn't know better would say she was careless, but Aubrey’s parents knew better. They saw her constantly working. New tricks, bigger and better, worked on tirelessly. After failing what should have been a simple maneuver for the umpteenth time, she threw her gloves on the floor. Her flashpaper must have been in them, because they set alight almost instantly. As she stomped it out, tears in her eyes, her mom came in to check on her. “It's alright.” She cooed while pulling Aubrey into a hug. “Take it step by step and you'll get it.”
When I was 16, my senses fooled me Thought gasoline was on my clothes
Aubrey woke up with a gasping breath. Smoke filled her lungs and sent her into a coughing fit. Something was wrong, she thought, as she struggled to get off the floor. Her head hurt and the room was hot, too hot. She remembered, then, the burglars and the fall. All around her, fire devoured her childhood home. What happened? Where was mom and dad? Oh god, her parents! She called out for them, wishing this was all a dream.
I knew that something would always rule me I knew the scent was mine alone
The realization that her powers were real crashed over her in waves. One of elation, a giddiness with new ideas for her act. The next was sorrow. She caused the fire, didn't she? There was no known source, they said, but what if she was the source? Her fault. Her mother's death stained her soul. The smell of smoke from that night never went away, and she knew it was hers, now.
All you have is your fire
Aubrey Little, fresh out of high school, moved from city to city with only her act and her rabbit, trying desperately to forget the worst day of her life. Her dad called often, but they never talked long.
And the place you need to reach
Kepler, West Virginia, was an insignificant town full of odd people. She got a sense she would be out of there in a week, tops.
Don't you ever tame your demons
The fire wasn't supposed to be that big. That trick only worked half the time anyway, why was this time different?
But always keep 'em on a leash
Her mother's soft words couldn't hear her eyes from the Flamebright Pendant in her hands. It called to her. She knew that somehow.
When I was a man I thought it ended When I knew love's perfect ache
Duck Newton and Ned Chicane became her family without her permission. She didn't know when their relationship changed, but she was keenly aware of the fact that she would die for them, given the chance. Her powers were stronger with them. They weren't afraid, they trusted her. With them and Mama and Dani and Janelle, everyone at the Lodge, too, she could focus. Focus on what she wanted, who she wanted to keep safe, and then she could wield her power with grace. Sure, it didn't always go right, but they were always there for her, and that was what love was.
But my peace has always depended On all the ashes in my wake
All she could see through the thinned crowd was Mama, but something else. Something wrong. “Is Ned okay?” The question silenced the crowd. Mama didn't say what she wanted to hear. This can't be happening. She tried to heal him, but nothing happened. Ned wasn't dead. Mama pulled her into her arms. She choked out “Mama, I- I told him to leave, I was-” her sobs were drowned out by something worse.
All you have is your fire
Adrenaline guided her as she tore through the woods, tears streaming freely and choked sobs escaping her.
And the place you need to reach
Her feet stilled in front of Janelle, who looked at her with such hope, yet so much guilt. “To take something from someone else isn't a sacrifice.”
Don't you ever tame your demons
Thunder drew her attention to the smoke and light in the sky.
But always keep 'em on a leash
The peak of Mount Kepler was falling and the only thing Aubrey could do was run.
