Spotify’s Newest Feature: Song Writer Promo Cards

Spotify has recently added a new feature to its platform that allows songwriters to promote their work. The unique promo cards on Spotify are described as ” customizable social media assets “ according to Digital News Media; all songwriters have to do is use their name, select a profile, and customize the color/picture for their background. The promotional card is connected to the songwriter’s Spotify profile, making it easily shareable on other social media platforms. This accessibility makes it easier for songwriters to '' get discovered by new listeners and potential collaborators ``according to TechCrunch. 

Another unique trait about the Spotify songwriter promo cards is that they do not require a login to create, allowing fans to create promo cards that help celebrate their favorite songwriters. Spotify created the promo card feature in 2020 allowing all content creators such as podcasters and authors the pleasure of having a promo card to advertise their work and receive more recognition. This feature was specifically beneficial at the time because we were in the pandemic due to COVID-19; pushing for content creators to get themselves out there and increase their fanbase. Even in 2018, Spotify advocated for the recognition of its creators. They” publicly displaying song credits in 2018, and labels and distributors credit songwriters on their new releases more frequently” according to TechCrunch.  In addition to other features, Spotify has created a “Written by Playlist” so that listeners have easy access to listening to more songs written by that specific songwriter. 

Some may argue that songwriters do not receive enough public recognition for the songs that they write. By creating songwriter promo cards Spotify is advocating and granting songwriters the opportunity to receive more recognition for their work. This connects to my sector of Audio Streaming because it shows how an audio streaming service like Spotify has developed and created innovations like Writer Promo Cards, on their platform. After all, they want to support the content creators who make a big contribution to their company’s success. Spotify realized that songwriters and other creators were not receiving the recognition they deserved for their work, so by creating Songwriter Promo Cards they were able to do so. (Word Count: 370)

SoundCloud, the popular audio streaming platform, has announced another round of layoffs as part of its efforts to achieve profitability and attract new investors. The company will cut 8% of its global workforce, which amounts to about 40 employees, mostly in the US. This comes less than a year after the company reduced its staff by 20% in August 2022.

The decision was communicated to the staff by CEO Eliah Seton in an all-hands meeting and an email on Tuesday (May 23). Seton said that the layoffs were "a challenging but essential decision to ensure the health of our business and get SoundCloud to profitability this year". He also said that he takes accountability for this decision and thanked the affected employees for their contributions.

According to sources within the company, SoundCloud aims to reach profitability by the fourth quarter of this year. The company also plans to seek further investors to support its growth trajectory. SoundCloud has been struggling to compete with other music streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music, and has faced financial challenges in recent years.

In 2017, SoundCloud laid off 40% of its workforce and closed two of its offices. The company also secured a $170 million investment from The Raine Group and Temasek Holdings that year, which helped it avoid bankruptcy. Alex Ljung, who was then the CEO, said that those cuts were necessary for the company to “control” its "independent future".

SoundCloud has since tried to diversify its revenue streams by launching a subscription service called SoundCloud Go, a distribution service called SoundCloud Premier, and a live streaming platform called SoundCloud Live. The company has also partnered with various labels, publishers, and artists to expand its catalog and offer more exclusive content.

However, SoundCloud still faces challenges in monetizing its user base, which consists largely of independent creators and listeners. The company reported a revenue of $166 million in 2020, up 37% from 2019, but still posted a net loss of $92 million1. The company also has a debt of $246 million as of December 2020.

SoundCloud’s latest layoffs indicate that the company is still trying to find a sustainable business model and a competitive edge in the crowded music streaming market. The company hopes that by reducing its costs and seeking new investors, it will be able to achieve profitability and growth in the near future.

do you love streaming tv shows and movies on free (perhaps even shady) websites but hate how many of them are inaccessible to you due to lack of subtitles?

i have a solution!

get the browser extension "substital"

it's available for firefox and chrome for desktop, as well as firefox. it even works on the chromium mini-browser in hyperbeam if you like watching with friends (tho i haven't figured out if/how i can make it run srt files in hyperbeam or android)

to use it:

you first navigate to your streaming website of choice.

then click play and then pause on your video (this is necessary on some streaming sites to make the video visible to the extension, idk why)

then click the substital icon (it looks like an S in a square) in your browser extension list. then the name of your video should pop up.

then click the name of the video

you'll see a popup with two boxes: one that says "search subtitles" and one that says "upload your own subtitles file"

you're gonna wanna try the "search subtitles" box first. look up the name of the episode or movie you want to watch. if you find an option in your language, then just click it and you'll be good to go

if you can't find the right subtitles in their database (or the ones in their database suck/are broken) the unfortunately you're going to have to use the "upload your own subtitles file" option. (and to do that, you're gonna first need to go find and download an srt file of your desired show/movie and language from a 3rd party website. (my favorite subtitle souce is addic7ed.com, another common source is opensubtitles.com)). then you can either click and drag the srt file from your downloads folder, or click the "upload your own subtitles file" and find where you have the set downloaded at like that.

now that you have your subtitles on your video, you may find that you want to change the size or colour of the subtitles for easier viewing. or that the subtitles are a few seconds behind or ahead of the audio/video. to fix that, just click the little S icon that will appear on the bottom of the video alongside the play/pause and time bar and volume and whatnot, and the options will appear to fix that.

also apparently substital recently introduced a 5 subtitle daily limit (which applies to ones you get from their database but you can still upload your own as many times as you want) which is fucked up and annoying.
