Today has been a pretty good day. Why? Because I submitted two assignments (one more to go!) and I FINALLY released my Kingdom of the Wicked bookmarks 🔮🐍💀 There are five new designs available as part of this KOTW set: three quote bookmarks, and two variations of a bookmark inspired by Emilia and Wrath’s bargain tattoo. This bookmark is the “Powerful” design. Check out my stories or my Etsy shop for a look at the other designs. I feel like I’ve been on the cusp of releasing these bookmarks for a month now 😩 Between the weather and uni assessment, I had to delay them more than once. I’m so glad to now have them available in the store 🙌 Q: What bookmark are you using right now? #KingdomoftheWicked #Auskiwibooksta #KOTW #PrincesofHell #PrinceWrath #KerriManiscalco #KingdomoftheCursed #KingdomoftheFeared #popularbooks #bookquote #openbook #WrathandEmilia #aussiebookstagram #witchybooks #Etsysellerau #etsyseller #bookishetsy #bookmarkshop #newproduct #booktineusbookmarks #booktineusdesigns #smallbizau #shopsmall #readersofig https://www.instagram.com/p/CkQPFu4rKsD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“That’s the thing about falling in love. You don’t exactly expect it to happen until you’re crash landing into someone else’s arms, wondering how the hell you lost the battle against gravity in the first place.” ✨🏠✨ Final Offer by Lauren Asher is the third and final instalment in the Dreamland Billionaires series, this time following the dual narratives of Callahan “Cal” Kane and Alana “Lana” Castillo. I have to admit that this was by far my favourite of the trilogy! The friends to lovers (not once, but twice!) meant that the banter and the tension were incredibly amped up, and the smut scenes reflected that. I loved how the fluffy cuteness could transition into steamy spice without being awkward. The characters well well-rounded, and I enjoyed the exploration of their past relationship, as well as their current one, and I very much liked that while the inheritance played a part of the story, it wasn’t as much of the main focus, unlike the last two books. I also have to admit that I loved that both the previous couples made appearances in this book, as it felt like it tied them together nicely. The discussion around substance abuse and the road to recovery was, for the most part, handled incredibly well. However, I didn’t agree with the fact that Cal seemed to be so focused on making Lana his reason for staying sober; I feel like the book would have benefited if we saw a bit more of Cal doing it for himself, rather than her or the inheritance. Overall, another great read from Asher, and a brilliant conclusion to the Dreamland Billionaires series! ✨🏠✨ Final Offer is book 21 for 2023. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2023 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #finaloffer #finalofferlaurenasher #laurenasher #dreamlandbillionaires #spicyromance #contemporaryromance https://www.instagram.com/p/Cqb_OGSrZc4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“I just want to feel better. My own body is my deepest enemy. It wants, it wants, it wants and when it does not get, it cries and cries and I punish it. How can you live in fear of your own body?” ✨📚✨ Trigger warnings include attempted suicide, self harm, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, violence, abuse, and sexual abuse. 📚 Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow is a dark contemporary young adult novel following Charlotte “Charlie” Davis before and after she attempts to commit suicide. The first thing that I have to say about this book is that I didn’t enjoy the way the book was written. It was really fragmented; some chapters only had a couple of lines on them, while others had pages. I found it to be distracting from the overall story, but it did make it a quick read. This novel deals with a lot of heavy topics, and for the most part, I think it was done well. Glasgow isn’t afraid to show us what Charlie is thinking or feeling, which sometimes leads to some really complex and gritty discussions about self harm and abuse, but at times it did feel like some of the things included were only for shock value. I think some of the issues discussed could have been explored more in depth if only the author didn’t try to tackle so many at once. That being said, Charlie and her thoughts and fears as she tried to build a life for herself after leaving the institute were incredibly realistic, as were most of the interactions she had with the people around her. But I do have to be honest and say that I found it hard to like Charlie as a character at times, which I think is important; not everyone is likeable all of the time. Overall, a thought provoking novel. ✨📚✨ Girl in Pieces is book 57 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #girlinpieces #kathleenglasgow #booksaboutselfharm #youngadultbooks #booksaboutmentalhealth https://www.instagram.com/p/CifmP2JPrZZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“I take a longer look at the words on her headstone. Brave, kind, loyal, sweet, loving, graceful, strong, thoughtful, funny, genuine, hopeful, playful, insightful, and on and on… Was she, though? Was she any of those things? The words make me angry. I can’t look at them any longer. Why do we romanticize the dead? Why can’t we be honest about them?” ✨⚱️✨ Jennette McCurdy’s memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died is a deeply hard hitting read that talked about McCurdy’s complicated relationship with her mother. The way that McCurdy discussed her thoughts, feelings and issues relating to her mother was wholly honest and insightful, and there were times where the book was incredibly witty. McCurdy didn’t shy away from sharing the details oh her life, and I admired her for it. The book was well written and put together, and the chapters flowed into each other beautifully. I found this book to be incredibly relatable in some ways, as I also have a complicated relationship with my mother. I loved that McCurdy decided to be completely transparent in what she went through, as it can be extremely hard to discuss. There were so many issues discussed in this book, and some of them were extremely confronting, and I’d highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in. ✨⚱️✨ I’m Glad My Mom Died is book 15 for 2023. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2023 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #imgladmymomdied #jenettemccurdy #memior #checktriggerwarnings #pinkandyellow #hardhittingreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CppQ2eDLGvl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"It is my right to reside in my own mind. It is my right... It is my right to be unsociable and it is my right to be unpleasant to be around. Do you ever listen to yourself? This is crazy, that is crazy, everything is crazy to you. By whose measure? Well, it is my right to be crazy, as you love to say so much. I have no shame. I have felt many things in my life, but shame is not among them." ✨📚✨ Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado is a strange, experimental feminist genre-defying collection of stories. Like most collections, this book contained a mix bag of stories, and I definitely had my favourites in the collection, which included The Husband Stitch, Eight Bites and The Resident, all of which were different and were making different points. Machado’s writing style is lyrical and evocative, and I very much enjoyed how she played around with styles for some of the stories. It’s often hard to review collections like these because they vary so wildly and everyone is going to enjoy different parts. That being said, for the majority of the book, Machado held me as a willing captive, and I’m excited to reread this book at a later date. ✨📚✨ Her Body and Other Parties is book 94 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #herbodyandotherparties #carmenmariamachado #shortstorycollection #feministstories #lgbtqiareads https://www.instagram.com/p/Clgc5PcrIfq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“You’ve done enough poking around, this is getting stupid. You’re not some kind of pregnant Miss Marple!” 💄✨💄 The It Girl by Ruth Ware is another compelling thriller mystery, this time set around the strange events of the death of April Coutts-Cliveden. Following Hannah, we watch as she and April form a friendship while attending Oxford, and later as the news that her convicted killer has died in prison, which sets Hannah on a journey that is both dangerous and life-changing. When news breaks that the man thought to have killed April may have been innocent, Hannah starts to dig into her memories and the past to try and work out what really happened to April the night she died. I found that the dual timeline of “then” and “now” really exacerbated the strangeness, and added to the overall mystery. I have to admit that I am absolutely in love with the way Ware is able to create her characters! Ware manages to create flawed and realistic characters that you both cheer for and despair for, and it worked so well within this novel. I never exactly knew who to trust, which added so much complexity to the events of the novel Overall, another fantastic novel from Ware, one that is definitely well worth a read! 💄✨💄 The It Girl is book 93 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta # https://www.instagram.com/p/Clf5gdcL5RZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“We all have our own curses. Our own blessings. We are the gods of our own universes, aren’t we? Destructive ones.” ✨🌏✨🌏✨ The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake is book one of the dark academia fantasy series set around a secret society related to the Library of Alexandria. I have to admit that I put off reading this book because of the hype surrounding it, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised when I did finally read it. While at times the writing and pacing could have been more improved upon, I overall enjoyed my time in this world, as I really loved the premise of this novel. A secret society guarding and learning from the Library of Alexandria, in a world full of magic and abilities, and I only wish we’d gotten to read more about the actual library at times. The book is mostly character driven, although the main plot line kept my interest. The mix of characters and the magic they possessed were presented beautifully, and I very much loved the chemistry and tension between them all, as it made for a compelling read. The only problem that I had was that sometimes they felt a little bit two-dimensional, however it was clear that they all had differing personalities, which makes the plot point of the trial exciting. I do have to admit that I’m looking forward to reading book two, as I want to know what happens next! ✨🌏✨🌏✨ The Atlas Six is book 84 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #theatlassix #olivieblake #blackandgold #darkacademia #newadultnovels https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj40kGMrF20/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“See, my mother was born in a foreign tongue. And though her English is perfect and her Chinese broken, I don’t understand her. I never learnt. She is of no language I know.” ✨📚✨ She Is Haunted by Paige Clark is a eclectic and original collection of short stories that has left me haunted. I don’t even know where to begin this review. Beautifully written, this collection was at turns emotional and powerful, funny and sometimes disturbing. Covering topics such as life and death, love of all types - familial, platonic and romantic, this book was both subtle and clever. Not all of the stories wowed me or made sense to me, but I think that was the point - there is something for everyone to get out of this collection. I know that this review is incredibly short, but I think that this is a book that is best read to be understood. The collection as a whole resonated with me and I believe that I’ll be thinking about it for an incredibly long time. ✨📚✨ She Is Haunted is book 32 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta # https://www.instagram.com/p/CdSvEH1LsB8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“The time you have in the past will only be from when I pour the coffee until the coffee has gone cold.” ✨☕️✨☕️✨ Before the Coffee Gets Cold written by Toshikazu Kawaguchi and translated from Japanese by Geoffrey Trousselot is a contemporary magical realism trilogy centred around cafes that allows time travel. These books discuss relationships between family, friends and lovers, but also death and grief, regrets and wishes for the future. Intricately tied together through the cafes and the people who work there, they combine the mundane with the magical. This trilogy was an absolutely gorgeous blend of both simplicity and complexity, and it was both emotive and thought provoking. I very much struggled to put these books down, and I loved every moment I spent with these characters. ✨☕️✨☕️✨ Before the Coffee Gets Cold is book 18 for 2023. “She's not lucky, though. She's never been lucky. She can sense him standing over her now, wheezing like an old man. The stink of cigarettes fills her nose. If she looked up she would see those dark-grey eyes staring down at her. Instinctively, she pulls the duvet a fraction higher over her face. But she can't hide. The tiny movement will have given her away: hell know she's only pretending to be asleep. Not that it will make any difference. Its never made any difference.” ✨🪨✨ Trigger warnings for child sexual abuse, child murder/death, mentions of miscarriage and mentions of suicide. ✨ The Creak on the Stairs by Eva Björg Egisdóttir, translated by Victoria Cribb, is a Nordic thriller mystery set in Akranes, Iceland. Written following alternate timelines and points of view, we follow Chief Investigating Officer Elma try and work out the identity of the woman who was mysteriously murdered and slowly unravel the threads of the case was both intense and captivating, especially when interspersed with the murdered woman’s childhood. This book was extremely thought provoking and it was while I worked out some of the twists, there were others that I had to wait to be unfolded. “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” ✨👁️‍🗨️✨ The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood is a modern classic in dystopian fiction. Following a woman named Offred, we learn about the decline of the birth rate and how the world has slowly changed so that women who are deemed fertile are classified as Handmaidens, and are assigned to a household in the hopes that they will be able to provide a child. This book was incredibly layered, powerful and complex, and it packed an emotional punch. There were times when this book was incredibly hard to read as there were parts that were frightening and emotionally draining, but it was also a deeply thought provoking read. This book has played on my mind since I finished it, and I think it’s one that is going to stay with me for a very long time. ✨👁️‍🗨️✨ The Handmaids Tale is book 16 for 2023. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2023 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #thehandmaidstale #margaretatwood #dystopianfiction #modernclassics #redandwhite #thehandmaidstalemargaretatwood https://www.instagram.com/p/CprggRnrkHr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“To clear up a murder you must do your own killing.” ✨🎞️✨ The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor by Cameron McCabe is a cult classic murder mystery story. Set following the events after an actress named Estella has been discovered dead, this novel is extremely layered and complex while also being extremely clever and witty. I do have to admit that I didn’t enjoy this very much - it often went over the same pieces of information with the same people but in different ways. After a while, it got very old very quickly. I found most of the characters to be unlikable in some way, and none of them ever felt fully fleshed out, however I very much enjoyed the writing style which kept the story moving forward. Overall, I can see why so many people enjoyed this but it just wasn’t for me. 🎞️ This book was gifted to me for my 26th birthday by my very lovely boyfriend, @tomislavcielicki ✨🎞️✨ The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor is book 13 for 2023. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2023 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #thefaceonthecuttingroomfloor #cameronmccabe #thrillermystery #classicmystery #cultclassic #giftedbook https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpc9Y6rrX2P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Gods were the inventions of men. Men fashioned gods to carry the burden of their own guilt. Men killed because they were afraid, and forgiveness made the killing easier. Without absolution, men suffered.” ✨⛓️✨⛓️✨ Scar Night by Alan Campbell is book one in the dark fantasy trilogy The Deepgate Codex. Following multiple points of view, this grim dark fantasy had me hooked from the very beginning. We learnt about the city and it’s inhabitants, gods and beliefs, while also watching a friendship blossom between Rachel and Dill. The characters in this novel were richly complex and well fleshed out. There were characters that I loved and those that I loved to hate, and I absolutely loved the banter and sarcasm layered in the conversations. “Let’s start with a love story. Or maybe it’s another horror story. It seems like the difference is mostly in where the ending comes.” ✨🍄✨ The Lost Sisters by Holly Black is a young adult fantasy romance novella set following the events before The Cruel Prince. In this novella, we hear Taryn’s side of the story for some of the events that happen in The Cruel Prince. Reading like a letter to Jude, this novella offers a completely different perspective and offers new information about the story we already know. A quick read, I loved getting more of the backstory to several of the plot points that had such a big impact to the Folk of the Air trilogy while also being drawn back into the world of the fae. “I know that the harder you try to dispel a legend the more power it gains.” ✨🌊✨ Carol Goodman’s novel The Lake of Dead Languages is a dual timeline thriller/mystery dark academia set in a boarding school. Following Jane, a former student and now teacher, we learn about the events of her senior year and the death of three of her friends, and we watch as the events seem to be repeating themselves amongst her Latin students. I could not put this book down. The writing was lushly lyrical, and I loved the emphasis of mythology and pagan/Wicca ideologies throughout. The dual timeline made for a complex and interesting tale, and I loved the way Goodman managed to bring everything together. The atmosphere of this book was tense, eerie and chilling, and I never quite knew what was going to happen next. There were times where I had guesses - and was sometimes right - but there were other times when information came to light that shocked me. If you’re a fan of dark academia novels, I’d highly suggest picking this one up! ✨ Trigger warnings for suicide, murder, incest, assault, stillbirth, and drowning. ✨🌊✨ The Lake of Dead Languages is book 10 for 2023. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2023 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #thelakeofdeadlanguages #carolgoodman #darkacademia #boardingschoolbooks #mysteryromance #creepybooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CoUQiRILccv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Skepticism in favor of a presumption of guilt when the facts do not support a finding of guilt is irrational skepticism. And irrational skepticism is the smoke screen behind which these murders have been hidden for a hundred years.” ✨🚂✨🚂✨ The Man from the Train by Bill James and Rachel McCarthy James is a true crime book focusing on the murders committed all over the country by an unknown serial killer. This book was incredibly harrowing to read at times. The crimes are discussed in enough detail to form a very clear picture, but not so much that it’s overly graphic. The coauthors discuss the victims and the crimes, as well as the people affected by the crimes, in a respectful yet knowledgeable way, which makes for a compelling read. The way that the coauthors write the information feels a little bit like a professor lecturing (in a good way!) in which that they often break away from the crime that their discussing to talk about something they want us to think about, or to remind us of other information. This book is well worth picking up if you’re a fan of true crime.
