Rushin’ through me like a fire Part 3
A Steddie Club AU
AO3 | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
“You bought a bar, but you don’t like people?” Steve tilts his head curiously.
“I’m an enigma, I know.” He flaps his hands around. “My Uncle Wayne always told me I’m as crazy as a rainbow trout in a car wash.” He laughs at the face Steve makes and scratches the back of his head. “Yeah, I never really understood what that meant either until I bought this place. Got in over my head with it all and it takes a lot of work to keep it running. Should’ve known better than to buy a bar when I barely graduated high school.”
“Seems like it all worked out for you, though,” Steve looks around appreciatively, as if he’s not already well acquainted with these fours walls. “Robin and I love coming here. It’s our favorite place. Unless we count our house.”
Eddie cheeks flush a pretty pink color that looks delicious under the twinkling lights. “Such high praise from one of my best customers.”
Now Steve’s blushing, ducking his head to hide his smile. He swirls his drink around in the glass. Deciding to be a bit bold, he says, “If I had known you were out here on slow nights, maybe I would’ve come in earlier in the week.” He takes a sip of his drink to stop himself from saying more.
“Are you saying little old me is enough to bring you in on a slow night?” Eddie leans forward, closing some of the space between them. It feels wholly different from when Austin did it, butterflies kicking up in his stomach and palms perspiring, instead of cold dread. The people sitting around the bar or dancing behind him have completely disappeared, his focus only on Eddie and the adorable way he’s biting his lip, playing up being coy but still looking secretly pleased at Steve’s attention.
“I think you’d be enough to bring me in any night.” And Steve gets to watch his cheeks blossom a bright cherry red as a delighted zing of pleasure wraps itself around his heart. Perhaps he hasn’t lost his touch after all.
“Aren’t you just a charmer?”
“Guess my lines do work, then, huh?” Steve asks, unable to wipe the goofy grin off his face. Pushing his luck, he asks, “Is the owner allowed to dance, or are you too busy?”
Before Eddie has a chance to answer, Gareth leans over his shoulder and says, “He’s not too busy.” Eddie elbows Gareth in the ribs. Gareth ignores him. “Go on, boss. Have fun for once.”
Steve hesitantly adds, “It’s ok if you don’t want to. The rejection won’t crush me or anything.” And so what if he’s lying through his teeth and it would definitely crush him completely if Eddie backed away from him after all the electricity he felt between them? He’ll keep that to himself.
“No rejection here, sweetheart,” Eddie sheepishly grins. He drags Gareth away with him by the arm, both of them whispering feverishly to each other as Eddie rounds the end of the bar. The hairs on his neck stand at attention knowing that they’re definitely talking about him, but he tries to stay focused on Eddie agreeing to dance with him.
With one last exasperated look, Gareth turns Eddie around by the shoulders and frog marches him over to Steve, who has hopped down from the bar stool to wait patiently along the edge of the dance floor.
“He’s all yours, Steve,” Gareth smirks and pushes Eddie forward with a little shove, then runs back behind the bar to continue helping customers.
“We really don’t have to, if you’re that uncomfortable,” Steve says once more, making sure that Eddie doesn’t feel pressured into anything.
“It’s not you,” Eddie glances at the dance floor, eyes nervously darting around. “I wasn’t kidding before. People make me nervous. I’m not used to anyone touching me unless they’ve known me since I was in diapers.” He rubs at the back of his neck. “I’m afraid I won’t be very good at all of that.” He gestures towards the bodies moving together.
“It’s not really about being a good dancer. At least, not for me,” Steve shrugs. “I like the release I get when I just let the music take over and it drains all of the stress out of my body.”
Eddie has turned away from the crowd, staring intently at Steve’s face. “You’re still a good dancer, though.”
“Are you admitting that you’ve watched me on those cameras of yours?” Steve can’t help the way his heart races at the thought. He wants to be the center of Eddie’s attention.
“I saw you earlier with that idiot,” Eddie tries to argue, but his cheeks are rosy and he looks a little skittish. Hard to tell if that’s a lie or if he really is that nervous.
Steve reaches out to grab Eddie’s hand, keeping eye contact and hesitating for a second, waiting on Eddie to give him an approving nod. He wraps a hand around Eddie’s and takes a step closer. “You know what else I love about dancing?”
It’s almost too dark to catch, but Eddie’s eyes flick down to his mouth. He runs his tongue over his bottom lip and Eddie’s eyes track the movement, giving Steve a rush of confidence.
“What?” Eddie asks, a bit dazed, like he barely heard Steve.
“How it lets you get close to someone.” He takes another step closer. “You can feel heat passing between bodies.” Another step. “The way the beat runs through your veins down to your hips.” He places a hand on Eddie’s hip and can actually see the full body shudder run through Eddie. “You can pretend like there’s no one else in the room.”
Eddie nods along, eyes glazed over and focused on Steve’s mouth, like he’s hanging on every word.
As the song changes, the beat switches to something softer, a little slower. A sensual jazzy undertone that makes him want to turn off the lights and move his body in time with someone else. It’s exactly the opening Steve needs.

good, honest thieves
Pairing: John Marston x gn!reader
Summary: A fight with Micah leads to a lecture from Dutch. Loyalty is exactly what you've been raised on, but to what? To whom? The answer seems to be John every time.
Warnings: Knife violence, canon-typical violence, fish guts, strong language, Micah Bell's whole existence, sexist language/insults, Dutch being our fav little manipulator, blink-and-you'll-miss-it mild angst
Word count: 1,465
A/N: I've been waiting to write this altercation since I first started ghost story, so I hope you all enjoy it for this nice, short chapter 💕
Series masterlist • AO3
—
You miss out on a hell of a firefight. A lot of law dead. A lot of townsfolk dead. A run-in with Mr. Leviticus Cornwall himself.
You’re surprised that he deigned to show his face in the mud and the muck of Valentine, but if there’s one thing rich folk are good for it’s greed. From the sound of it, he’s none too pleased to have been robbed.
From the sound of it, it’s a lucky thing John and Arthur and Dutch and Strauss ain’t dead after all that.
The gang was quick to make a hasty retreat.
Now you’re camped outside a little town called Rhodes, farther south than you’ve settled in years. Arthur teases that you and Javier must be happy to be in warmer climes, but personally? You hate it. New Austin is dry heat and desert for miles. The air there bites, sharp and clean. Here it’s thick as molasses and wet with humidity. Sweat and condensation cling to everything. The very ground beneath you is mucky and muddy and lush with overgrowth, like the vegetation can’t stand it here, either. It claws and climbs its way out and onto everything. You’ve never seen undergrowth like this, swallowing trees and homesteads whole without discrimination.
Out of everyone, you figured Dutch would hate it most - you can’t count how many times he’s told stories about the Southern scum that put his daddy in the ground. But he seems in his element out here. The town is divided into factions he and Hosea have wasted no time playing against one another, and rumors of confederate gold have lit his eyes with that same gleam you saw before Blackwater. You know you won’t leave until he has it - he’s even got Bill and Arthur playing deputy while working leads.
Today they’re off with the sheriff chasing ‘shine in the hills, so camp is mostly quiet. Or it would be, if Micah wasn’t hanging around.
“Ghost,” he calls out, uncomfortably familiar. He approaches Pearson’s chuckwagon with open arms that are greeted only with a flat stare when you look up from the fish you’re gutting. You promised Pearson you’d take care of them while he does the shopping.
“Micah.” His name grits past the teeth you’re doing your utmost not to bare in warning; already he’s closer than you’d like.
“Haven’t seen much of you since I got back from Strawberry,” he says.
“I keep busy.”
“Not too busy for Marston.” He rocks back on his heels and raises his brows like he’s caught you out. Something about the way he says John’s name makes your hackles raise.
“Me an’ him are friends,” you chop off a trout head aggressively while making even more aggressive eye contact. “You and me, on the other hand, ain’t.”
“Aw, don’t be like that,” he wheedles. “I’m a real friendly fella. We oughta go drinking sometime and I’ll show you.”
It takes everything in you not to cringe at the thought. It’s one thing to work a job with him, when you have to, but spending quality time with Micah? It sounds like just about the worst thing you can think of. He has this slimy quality about him, and the way he talks about some of the others is enough to solidify your poor opinion.
Dutch can make nice with him all he likes. You won’t.
“We all heard what happened when you went drinking in Strawberry,” is what you say aloud. “Rhodes might not survive.”
He laughs through the fact that the joke was meant to be at his expense and leans closer. “You’re funny, Ghost. Real funny. I can see why John likes you so much. It’s too bad he’s so… Well, you know.”
“He’s so what?” If looks could kill, Micah would be stone dead.
“Useless,” he shrugs. “I mean, first he gets hisself half eaten, then he’s fleeced rustlin’ sheep— almost got his brains blown out in Valentine. Not to mention he let Morgan steal a two dollar whore right out from between his—”
All of the sudden you can’t hear past the ringing in your ears or see past the blood red of your vision. He’s snickering, leaning closer still, leering, and faster even than you can register you’ve grabbed him by the hair and smashed his face against the fish guts and the wooden table before you.
He cries out, somewhere between alarmed and disgusted and enraged.
Your filleting knife rests against his pulse point.
“Say it again,” you snarl.
Stark, killing hate reflects back on your knife blade with the whites of his eyes. “Goddamn you!”
“Not so funny now, huh?” He struggles in your grip. “Say it again.”
He opens his mouth and bares his teeth, likely to spit more profanities, when approaching footsteps stop you both in your tracks. You glare up at the intrusion to find Ms. Grimshaw. Her face is even more severe than usual.
“What exactly is going on in my camp?” she demands, hands on her hips.
“Micah was just apologizing,” you say. Your smile is a feral show of teeth.
He squirms in your grip, claws at your hands. “Get this goddamn lunatic off me!”
She purses her lips, unimpressed. “Ghost, unhand Mr. Bell.”
You let him go reluctantly, pressing the knife to his skin just a little harder before shoving him back. He staggers away and you wipe your hands down your pants and grimace.
Micah’s hands fly to his throat, like he’s checking it’s all still intact. His cheek shines slimy red with fish blood.
“You’re crazy!” he accuses.
“Ghost is plenty of things,” Ms. Grimshaw says before you can cut in, “but crazy ain’t one of ‘em. I suggest you learn from this particular mistake, Mr. Bell. Now go on, the both of you. Get! Before you make another mess for me to clean up.”
You murmur a chastised yes, ma’am under your breath.
Micah stalks away, glaring over his shoulder without another word.
All that’s left is the thunk, thunk, thunk, of your knife against the wooden table. You let yourself imagine each unfortunate fish is Micah, instead.
—
Dutch finds you later. You’re sat on a log overlooking the lake, glaring out across the water like it’s somehow responsible for everything that’s happened up until now. He sits beside you and lights a cigar.
“Ms. Grimshaw tells me someone tried to kill Micah today.”
His tone is neutral, but a quick glance out of the corner of your eye reveals a tightness in his posture that’s never a good sign. He lets out a puff of smoke and watches it fade into the horizon with squinted eyes.
“She tell you he had it coming?”
“Now, Ghost—” he starts to chastise, but you cut him off.
“I never pretended to see what you do in him.” His eyes widen and flash with wounded pride, but your face is set in defiance. “Maybe we’re all nasty killers and degenerates, but he’s worse. I ain’t gonna stand by while he runs his mouth about any one of us.”
His face is all severity and rough-cut gemstone. “Any one of us, or just John?”
Outrage flares your nostrils and twists your mouth into something ugly. “That ain’t fair! And it certainly ain’t the point.”
“Isn’t it?” His hand on your shoulder, so often a comfort through the years, rests heavy and threatening. Your pulse jumps. Your mouth feels dry. “We don’t have the luxury of doubt - not between any of us. Haven’t I taught you loyalty? Don’t I deserve your trust?”
That’s all it takes for you to deflate. “You have it. You’ve always done right by us, but—”
“There is no but,” he says. “Faith, Ghost! Faith.”
“Faith, then. Fine. Faith.”
The words taste bitter on your tongue, but his eyes soften all at once into that familiar, sparkling brown. “I knew I could depend on you.”
“Sure. Always.”
He leaves with one last squeeze of your shoulder and orders to look into the Braithwaite family - something to do with prize horses. After all, who better than the infamous Ghost Rider? The Van der Linde Ghost?
You stay on that log for a long time. Thinking. Smoking. Stewing in the not-quite-anger left in Dutch’s wake.
That night around the fire you and John gravitate to one another like always. He brings you a plate of fish and sits beside you; a little too close for friends, a little too friendly to be anything but.
Somehow it aches more than usual.
He chatters on about his day, but all you can hear is the sneer of Micah’s voice, and all you can feel is the burn of Dutch’s knowing stare. The sweat on your brow has little to do with Lemoyne’s oppressive heat anymore.

with her fathers and the rest of the kitchen staff now retired to the servants’ quarters, it’s only charlie left in the palace kitchens -- well, her and ten heaps of pots and pans waiting patiently to be scrubbed. her father austin had wanted to help, but her other father gabriel insisted it was a just penalty when charlie had been dodging work most of the day. unfortunately, she had been too enraptured with her new book ( possibly swiped from the royal library ) to be helpful with the navarrean princesses’ arrival.
but regardless of what is happening at the castle, it hardly seems to matter to charlie. as a kitchen maid, her life mainly happens downstairs, confined to the sweltering walls of the scullery. she’s only allowed to partake in the upstairs world’ by sweeping the ashes from the fireplaces in the mornings, but -- for her every day change of scenery, charlie has to rely on her books.
the biggest change with the royals’ visit is that there’s simply more cutlery and kettles and pans to wash, now with queen sienna and king james trying to impress the princess’s betrothed. charlie had never seen her papa plate a trout with so many different flowers from the palace gardens, but . . . she guessed it was a decent illusion, making it seem as if there was much more food when it was mostly petals and leaves. these days, she doesn’t envy the meals on the silver trays so much -- preferring some good old bread and stew to fancy tricks with garnishes. a feast for the eyes can’t very well slake a real appetite.
she decides to sneak a bit of cheese and apple before she gets to work on the dishes. and with that, of course she’ll need a cup of tea. and then before charlie realizes it, she’s back to opening her book again, devouring an exciting chapter about ancient burials and curses from the middle east. as she turns the page to read further about the dolls that would become servants in the afterlife, however, charlie hears the door open suddenly.
she immediately bolts up like a dog caught nibbling his owner’s favorite shoe, hurrying over to the basin as she pumps water. ❝ i’m washing! i was washing the whole time, honest! ❞ she insists right off the bat, assuming it’s gabriel or nora ( forgetting her glasses again ). but when charlie casts a glance over her shoulder, pretending to be hard at work -- she’s astonished to see a new face.
and it’s not someone finally here to help with the scrubbing, but one of the visiting princesses. princess ashley, by the looks of it; charlie vaguely remembers seeing the royal portraits when the halls were first awash with the new proposal rumors.
Tumblr media
❝ oh -- your highness! ❞ charlie starts, wiping her hands on her apron before dropping into a quick curtsy. ❝ what, ah -- what -- what brings you here? ❞ she starts, the bewildered expression still plastered across her face. and then a few seconds pass, and charlie realizes her impertinence. ❝ i mean, begging your pardon, miss -- ah -- i mean, princess -- ❞ oh gods, this is why her fathers never let her speak to the royals here; they know charlie always ends up putting her foot in her mouth. ( but also, it’s their fault then, that she’s so very poor at it ).
❝ uhhhh, is there anything i can help you with, your highness? ❞ charlie finishes, hoping that’s a decent save. she puts on a big smile afterwards, hoping that the princesses of navarre are nicer than the ones in temeria. ( the time charlie accidentally pet duke when she still had ash on her hand from the fireplace was enough to tell her she should avoid princess audrey at all costs. ) ( @feveredblurs )

FZ’s next outing is a mostly-live mostly-collaboration with Captain Beefheart. I wanted this record to be a knockout when I first heard about it. The Zappa/Beefheart lore goes deep: they were high school friends, and some of the first extant recordings of either of them they made together, though they were never very serious collaborators. FZ recorded Beefheart’s legendary, divisive debut Trout Mask Replica, and of course Beefheart contributed the vocals for Willie the Pimp on Hot Rats. A full album collaboration should have been dynamite. But, eh. It’s not bad, but it’s far from the best of Zappa or the best of Beefheart. CB’s contributions are largely poetry recitations over the band’s playing; you don’t get that FZ/CB synergy you’d hope for.
A lot of the best material here is just Zappa: my favorites are Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy and Advance Romance. And of course Muffin Man is a great but ultimately insubstantial jam. I used to see Zappa Plays Zappa in Austin a bunch (where Muffin Man was recorded—good night Austin, Texas, wherever you are), and they always made a big showpiece out of the song there. Those versions were spectacular—the original on this album is just monologue, chorus, long guitar solo, outro. All good, but there’s just not that much to it.
This is kind of the last album by the best Mothers lineup, and it feels more like an epilogue to their era than a conclusion. But I say “kind of” because this is also a transition record: you’ve got George Duke and Tom Fowler, but no Ruth Underwood (😱) and most of the drums are by Terry Bozzio, who will become THE mainstay of Zappa’s next band. This is also the last (non-posthumous) album to be credited to the Mothers. From this point on Zappa is a solo musician, and all his albums and tours are under his own name.
My copy of this record is a little worn, but given how much I listen to it, it’s fine—I’m not super tempted to upgrade it.

I really got to start tuning in for these BKFC events. Just watching the highlights on Twitter now
Austin Trout gave Diego Sanchez the work, as expected
A 6’0 290 lb man KO former NFL player, UFC vet, and POS Greg Hardy.
A woman got hit so hard off a counter, her ankle twisted 90 degrees in the wrong direction. She then proceeded to snap it back into place with her hand before standing up.
Mike Richman is still around! And also Lorenzo Hunt KOed him after almost getting slept himself. Also John Dodson and Kevin Croom KOed some dudes.

Determining the "best" Jermall Charlo fight is subjective and can vary depending on personal preferences. Jermall Charlo has had several notable fights throughout his career, and fans may have different opinions on which one is the best. Here are a few fights that are often regarded as significant or memorable:
Jermall Charlo vs. Julian Williams (2016): This fight was a unification bout for the IBF and WBC junior middleweight titles. Charlo showed his skills and power by scoring a fifth-round knockout against Williams, solidifying his status as a top fighter in the division.
Jermall Charlo vs. Austin Trout (2019): Charlo defended his WBC interim middleweight title against former world champion Austin Trout. It was a competitive fight that went the distance, with Charlo ultimately winning by unanimous decision.

The History of Round Rock, TX
Round Rock was originally inhabited by the Tonkawa Native American tribe. It was founded in 1851 by Jacob M. Harrell, who built a log cabin on Brushy Creek. The town got its name from a large round rock in the creek bed that was used as a landmark by Native Americans and early settlers. In the early days of the town, Round Rock served as a hub for the cattle industry and was a stop on the Chisholm Trail. It also played a role in the Civil War, with Confederate forces occupying the area and the Battle of Round Rock taking place nearby in 1864. After the war, Round Rock began to grow and develop, with the arrival of the railroad in 1876 and the establishment of the first school in 1877. It continued to grow throughout the 20th century, becoming a major center for commerce and industry in the region.
Old Settlers Park
