it will be difficult for you to see, hear and breathe
Fandom: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Pairing: Phryne/Jack Tags: Modern AU, Australian bushfires, whump, Jack babysitting
Excerpt:
Jack tore his eyes away from his phone. He dropped the wooden spoon into the mixing bowl, and began to fumble in his pockets for his ear buds.
It is now too late to leave
He was leaving streaks of flour on his pants, but he didn’t slow down to wipe off his hands.
If you are not in the area, do not return
“Isn’t Aunty Phry in Queanbeyan trying to get all those old people from the old people’s home onto a bus?” Mary asked, scowling down at the table and absently folding the plastic packaging down into a neat square.
Following a change in weather conditions, the Pialligo bushfire is approaching Beard, Oaks Estate and West Queanbeyan including Crestwood. The fire may pose a threat to all lives directly in its path.
Jack squeezed his eyes shut, and nodded.
People in these suburbs are in danger and need to seek immediate shelter as the fire approaches.
His fingers closed around his headphones, and he yanked them out of his pocket, pulling the cloth lining of the pocket inside out as he did.
“She’ll be okay,” he muttered to Mary.
He kept his teeth shut as he spoke. There was a knot of panic that was moving from his chest to his throat, and he wasn’t sure what would happen if it got out.

Australia at risk of worst grass fires in 49 years, report warns
"Powder keg-like conditions for fires” is not a sentence I wanted to read. Australia is now a country of extremes. Flood straight to drought. No more "normal " years in between. Som models predict that Climate Change is going to make this country uninhabitable by 2100. I can believe it. :/

The crew on an army helicopter that started Canberra’s devastating 2020 bushfires were landing for a toilet break when they inadvertently ignited the monster blaze.
...
The major admitted he hadn’t turned off the search light before landing, which the court heard can be as hot as 550C.
He denied even knowing the light would be hot, telling the court he’d only ever been inside the helicopter when it was on.
We train 'em well, don't we?

The Fire Knows No Boundaries
This picture is not from the fires, but of a sacred place, Mt Yengo. It’s where Biame [a creation ancestor] stepped back into the sky. That’s why the mountain is flat. It was part of the bushfire story and is part of our Story that will outlast these times. Aussie asthma fam and other folk with respiratory problems - we're seeing early bushfires this year so now's a good time to check your meds. CHECK YOUR BACKUPS TOO. It'll pay to get ahead of the curve, if you can.

Given the fact that we are only just in Spring now, its only 28°C and I walked outside and saw the smoke in the atmosphere I am really not looking forward when it hits summer. I have watched the rest of the fires devastate the rest of the world and I am really scared for this summer. Although there were only a few small fires or grass fires today, given all the La Niña’s and El Niño’s we have had, I am worried.

oh yeah so for like the last week or two we’d been hearing some noises outside and we’ve been like. the fuck is that. always at night and crap and it’s a new animal noise we’ve not heard before. to tell you how boring our suburb is, I’d never heard a frog croak at night until this year LMFAO so! we’ve been getting many kookaburras this month (I assume bc of the heat…?) and now this so we’re like. huh.
anyways we’ve got bats

black summer
Twisting, cruel sun,
Australian summer, black bikinis on red skin.
A wave crashes, eyes flicker in the light,
And you walk into the ocean.
The water hits you,
Caressing your waist, cooling your feet.
‘Always swim with a friend.’
The men in red and yellow had always told you,
Why now do you swim alone?
A speck in the great expanse of water.
You’re the furthest out,
Your hair rippling around you,
And you float on your back.
Are you now aware of how insignificant you seem?
The changing tides knock you around,
With no care, no sympathy for the girl in the ocean.
And the sun sets, the pink sky warms your burnt skin.
You don’t leave though, as it grows darker.
And you float, staring into orange abyss,
The bushfire, the smoke.
Warping your nostrils to tense,
Your throat to choke.
How long will you lie here?
Wishing, waiting, wanting.
Craving the feeling of weights in your pockets,
The brutal caress of suffocation.
Or the tightening of rope,
The loss of ruby red blood.
And when you stumble back onto shore,
Your hair dripping, trickling the cruel ocean’s water down your spine,
What will you do now?
Do you wander on home, the bus ride silent?
Do you revel in the smoke in your lungs,
Or the water in your hair?
Or do you turn away from the lights of the village,
The people who drink and laugh,
And face the ocean,
And walk back in?

Quote
During Australia's deadly Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20, the prime minister encountered a severe backlash when he went on a poorly timed family holiday to Hawaii. News of the trip - which his office initially tried to avoid making public - forced Mr Morrison to cut the trip short and issue an apology. "I get it that people would have been upset to know that I was holidaying with my family while their families were under great stress," he said. The prime minister didn't fare much better when floods ravaged large parts of Queensland and New South Wales in March, drawing accusations of responding too slowly to declare a national emergency. The fire and flood events - two of Australia's worst-ever natural disasters - again raised public anger over the government's climate targets, which are among the weakest set by rich nations.
