apparently that actor penned an open letter to get another performer removed from their lead role in hedwig and the angry inch, on the grounds that cis men shouldn't play hedwig. except oops turns out that performer was nonbinary.

I don’t know much about that industry but I don’t understand sn**k’s attachment to Rabbit. Like why she was in it
Why was she in Run Rabbit Run? I think plenty of reasons.
I think when she and her agent were pitched the project, it probably felt like a really exciting film.
It's the debut screenplay of a really 'hot' Australian author, Hannah Kent, who wrote the enormously internationally successful Burial Rites, as well as The Good People and Devotion (which are all dense historical fiction novels, which is a part of why I was suspicious of such a vast genre switch for screen which was basically confirmed for me when Kent said she doesn't watch horror) and the second feature of a really 'hot' Australian woman director, Daina Reid, who's worked extensively on really 'good' genre TV - The Handmaid's Tale, The Shining Girls, Romper Stomper, The Spanish Princess, Offspring.
That is, on paper, a really exciting creative team! I can see why her agent would recommend it and why she'd think it was going to be something that's more than what it is as a film.
I also think it probably had both personal and strategic benefits for her since she's moved back to Australia. The first one's pretty easy to see, I think - she's from Adelaide originally, Run Rabbit Run was shot in Adelaide / South Australia. Shooting a movie there means she gets to stay for a longer period of time and spend time with the friends and family she has there.
A lot of actors take jobs in their hometowns for that reason - a sort of working homecoming, as well as a way to support the industry you originally came from. A friend of mine who's a theatre director has actually just accepted a job directing a play back in her hometown pretty much for that reason exactly. It's a level below what she'd normally do, but she's really looking forward to spending a lot of time with her Dad around the play as he had a health scare not too long ago and this gives her the opportunity to spend three months there.
The strategic benefit is speculative, of course, and a bit more specific to the Australian industry, so bear with me as I try to explain it, haha.
Each state here has their own screen agency, and these screen agencies play an enormous role in funding and supporting local production, while also attracting overseas production with specific local advantages. Queensland for instance, my home state, sells itself on its beaches, Warner Brothers' large studio, and the fact they have some of the biggest water tanks for shooting underwater sequences in the Southern Hemisphere. It's why things like Aquaman, Pirates of the Carribbean and every mermaid show you've ever heard of are shot there.
Because they are state funded though, these films and tv shows have state talent quotas attached to them. In other words, they have to have a certain amount of both Above the Line Talent (these are producers, directors, writers and principal actors), and Below the Line Talent (all crew, extras, stunties, craft services, etc.) that are considered as being 'from' that state.
These quotas are designed so that interstate and international productions can't just ship in crews or whole casts from interstate or overseas, and effectively makes them invest in local talent.
But what local talent means can vary a little.
Using myself as an example, I'm from Brisbane, so I automatically qualify as local talent for Screen Queensland, but I live in Melbourne, which doesn't actually mean I automatically qualify as local talent for VicScreen. To qualify, I had to live in the state of Victoria consistently for two years, and be able to supply evidence of that, which I can, and is why I am now on the talent registers both in Queensland and Victoria.
For Sarah, she's from South Australia, but she also lives in Melbourne, which means she's considered basically a talent asset for both the South Australia Film Corporation (which funded Run Rabbit Run), and VicScreen (which interestingly enough actually was involved in developing Run Rabbit Run). Her last Australian productions were Winchester (2018), The Beautiful Lie (2015), Oddball (2015), The Dressmaker (2015) and The Secret River (2015), all of which are VicScreen, meaning they were all filmed in Melbourne / Victoria (which makes sense! Melbourne has a much bigger industry than Adelaide).
With her moving back to Australia, and moving back with the status that means she's always going to be a principal actor, I think it makes sense that she'd want to strategically show that she can qualify as Above the Line Talent in both Melbourne and Adelaide. It shows her off a bit as supporting her home state's industry / remembering her roots, but also makes her appear as available / accessible for filmmakers there and the state's funding body.
Given she's heading to London's West End again for theatre too, I think it probably was a pretty smart strategic move to sort of stake such a local claim like that before she goes international again too.

Comment:
Australian studios are increasingly playing the role of Hollywood ‘backlot’: foreign stories made for cinema with a state-of-the art industry subsidised by various arms of the Australian state. ‘Elvis’ is an example.
Amidst streaming services, US purchases of local TV stations, and a competitive tussle for public monies, less and less local content and stories are being told in digital media.
Extract:
[T]he story of Elvis Presley is no less than the story of rock 'n' roll, from the backwater shacks and steamy late night clubs of the American south to prime-time national television.
And Luhrmann bravely takes it all in his kaleidoscopic sweep: with its often-hyperactive camerawork, the film plays as a 159-minute musical roller-coaster ride through Elvis's 42 years. You're liable to get all shook up, if not from tenderness of feeling then possibly from motion sickness.

Revolutionizing Australia's Entertainment Industry
Tumblr media
Australia's entertainment industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by dynamic shifts in film, television, and digital games. Let's explore key statistics and trends in this ever-evolving sector.
Film and Video Production Businesses
Film and video production businesses have surged ahead, becoming the dominant revenue generator in the industry. In 2021-22, they recorded a remarkable total income of $4,575.3 million, marking a staggering 98.7% increase since 2015-16. This explosive growth is paralleled by a 131.1% rise in total expenses, reaching $4,902.0 million. This sector's contribution to the industry value added also escalated by 61.7% to $1,610.8 million.
Despite these impressive figures, the operating profit before tax stood at -$285.6 million in 2021-22. The fluctuations in profit are largely influenced by the project-based nature of major productions and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), which are not consistently captured in this survey. SPVs often incur expenses, but income from these productions may arrive in different financial years or through overseas legal entities, eluding the survey's scope.
Income Streams
1. Television Programs Reign: Production income from television programs reigned supreme, constituting 33.8% of the total income in 2021-22. This segment witnessed a striking 101.8% surge, reaching $1,544.7 million, primarily fueled by income from television drama programs.
2. Film and Video Production: The film and video production sector contributed $837.6 million to the total income, accounting for 18.3% of the industry's earnings.
3. Production Services on the Rise: Total production services income surged by 112.6% to $773.2 million in 2021-22. Other production services, in particular, saw a remarkable 627.2% increase, reaching $404.3 million. This segment became the industry's largest income source.
4. Post-Production and Visual Effects: The post-production, digital, and visual effects services income skyrocketed by 231.8% to $388.9 million, reflecting a trend of in-house handling of simpler tasks. Visual effects services, specifically, generated $115.0 million in income.
Employment Dynamics
As of June 2022, the industry employed 26,808 people, marking an impressive 83.1% increase (12,170 people) since June 2016. This workforce comprised 62.1% males and 37.9% females.
On-set crew members took the lead in employment, with 8,450 people contributing 31.5% of total employment by June 2022.
Queensland experienced a substantial employment surge, adding 2,885 people (226.8%) to its workforce from June 2016 to June 2022. This boost was driven by a wave of international film productions choosing the state as their filming destination.
Australia's entertainment landscape is thriving, with film, television, and digital games at the forefront of this evolution. As the industry continues to expand, adapt, and innovate, it presents exciting opportunities for both professionals and enthusiasts looking to be part of its dynamic journey.

The best films of 2022 in a year of cinematic delights
The best films of 2022 in a year of cinematic delights
Even as the film industry continues to recover from the debilitating effects of the pandemic, the film’s continuing story is not a loss of quality. It’s been a year filled with cinematic delights from all parts of the world, with rookie filmmakers doing everything they can to shock audiences and old masters delving into their darkest memories for indelible works of memory. I remain concerned that…

Things I noticed on my Pacific Rim rewatch:
1. Raleigh had his left arm ripped off while he was piloting the left hemisphere, then had his right arm and leg shredded while he was piloting the right hemisphere. Holy fuck he has been through it. His resilience and battle focus is enough to be recognized by Pentecost, whose solo Tokyo battle was three hours long.
2. Implied that Hercules Hansen was one of the OGs, like Cherno Alpha. Wonder what happened to his copilot before he began drifting with his son. Wonder what happened to the Jaeger he piloted before Striker Eureka.
3. Pentecost says he carries nothing into the drift, but that just means he knows how to match with anyone, right? Wonder what that final drift was like in Chuck Hansen's head.
4. Tendo Choi is in command of the bridge when neither Pentecost nor Herc Hansen is present. I forgot that he reverts to Cantonese in stress situations, love these details.
5. I enjoy the bilinguals of this film. Also really interesting choice to focus on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean: Australians, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, and a badass Marshal who strikes deals with the black market and literally anyone else who will fund the Jaeger program. We get to have industrial apocalypse, alien thriller, and cyberpunk in one film. (Side question: are the Americas' coastlines devastated?)
6. Mako's expressions are so. Agh. Her face shows what she's feeling with unshielded honesty (she feels so much, like Raleigh) but she carries herself like Pentecost: deliberate, controlled. Very much his student (daughter).
7. Newt and Hermann are obsessed with their scientific theories being right, even if it means the possible doom of humankind. Iconic Academics. Also they must be important enough to have helicopters on call, since they run out of one to get to the bridge in time for the final fight.
8. Final goodbyes between Stacker Pentecost and Mako Mori.
9. Mako and Raleigh are two of many orphans who had no intention of surviving the war that took their families. Raleigh's last sacrifice was simultaneously the most selfless and selfish thing to do. Good for him to have survived, Mako would've found it hard to forgive him.
10. "Stop the clock."

i’ve gone back to college and started student teaching and gotten covid and adopted a kitten all in the last two weeks so i haven’t gotten to read as much but here is what i’ve got! the key is the same as the lestappen fic rec:

Here we go! I’m also tagging some of the bestest and loveliest authors at the bottom of the post, go send them some love!! (Putting it under a Read More for all of our collective sanity)

Lando has a childhood fear of thunderstorms and in a record-breaking year for rainfall, Oscar Piastri becomes his new teammate.

Anyways, the driver room is largely quiet at the moment. But not entirely, much to Lando’s enjoyment.
Buzzing from Oscar’s headphones, loud enough for Lando to hear the words, is a song from Barbie.
Charli XCX, no less.

• Fluff, Comedy *800 words
> Mortifying! Anyways, =
Mortifying interaction, but he’d survive. Besides, it’s not like the cashier was that cut–
“Cute enough to make you stupid, huh Norris?” He could hear his smile before he saw his face, a proper Cheshire grin.
“Fuck off mate,” Lando groaned, already trying to scrub the cashier from his brain. Except for the Australian accent, he decided; that bit could stay. Maybe his eyes, too, as tired as they had seemed. And his hair, which looked so soft in that kind of ridiculous side part.

> The New Normal =
He wears a lot of shorts.
Lando had thought that Daniel wore shorts a lot, and then along came Oscar. It must be something about Australians.
Carlos never wore shorts.
Oscar’s pale, unblemished, muscular (and hairy) thighs spill out of the team issued black shorts whenever they sit to film content, or sit in meetings, or whenever Oscar sits in Lando’s general vicinity while wearing them.
They’re not a distraction.
OR Lando’s very healthy obsession with his new teammate’s thighs.

> Invocations One Fall Away From the Concrete = ♥️
“Okay,” Lando says. “What’s your power?”
“Telekinesis,” Oscar replies a little too easily, like he’s trying not to make a big deal out of it. In fact, he’s already looking back down at his form. Lando doesn’t miss the way he seems completely stumped by the ‘Birth date’ square though.
Telekinetics are far and few between. You’re probably more likely to be struck by lightning twice than to meet a telekinetic. They’re so highly sought after in the hero industry that any telekinetic baby would automatically have a net worth of at least three hundred billion US dollars the second it was born. Moreover Oscar's an Oxy. It’s like, the jackpot of jackpots. This guy’s simply unreal on paper.
Lando scrunches up his face, rolls his eyes and says, “alright.” He shrugs. “Nothing to write home about, then.”

AKA the low-key superpowers au where they have to activate their powers doing a really specific thing. Oscar's activation is a mystery to Lando, but it involves a lot of good stuff, pinky promise. (Lando Wink™)

Not worth dwelling on, really. Oscar doesn’t have to understand him to be on his team. If he were a pitcher, it would be different; Oscar has to get his pitchers in order to do his job as a catcher well. Lando isn’t a pitcher, though. So it’s fine.

Lando wasn’t above throwing his weight around in order to get what he wanted, at least in some circumstances. And he wanted to meet Oscar Piastri.
In general, he wanted to go to a MotoGP weekend and probably could have either bought tickets and waited around there like a normal person or asked one of his actual sort-of friends in the paddock to hang out in their garage, but the more specific desire was to meet Oscar Piastri.

So officially, Oscar Piastri, pretty good steepler and pretty bad pacer, was now a professional runner.
They wanted him to steeple, mostly, though he’d be doing cross country in the fall, and Lando had pinky promised him, mid-distance guy to mid-distance guy, that if he wanted to get into the 3k flat indoor then he would get him in.
Oscar didn’t really want to ask how he planned on doing that. Felt safer not to ask.

Lando grabs a pillow and hits him with it, while Oscar laughs loudly. His fangs are on full display, white and sharp and pretty. “You know what I mean, you dickhead!”
“Yeah, I know what you mean,” Oscar says, eyes twinkling. “You want me to use you as a human Capri Sun. You know, like a weirdo.”
“God, you’re making this so much worse than it is,” Lando says, burying his face in his hands. It’s. Well, it’s embarrassing, but Oscar also hasn’t outright said no, so. You know what they say. In for a penny, in for a pound. “So, will you?” And then, just in case, he adds. “Suck my blood?”

Anyways, she wants to hop on the bandwagon, get us to play chess, take photos after the weekend. She thinks you could teach me. It would show that you’re pedantic and that I’m pushing past my comfort zone...”
Oscar scoffs. “If Michelle’s only taking photos, why do I need to teach you it? Couldn’t we just pose with a chess set, like the Williams drivers?”

“Oh,” Oscar says, because what else are you supposed to say when your teammate says ‘I wish I still had a girlfriend so I could fuck some of that frustration out of me’. “I mean. I uh. I could give you a blowjob? I’d suggest a fuck but I don’t have any lube on me right now and I’m guessing you don’t either.”
Huh, would you look at that. Looks like the award for ‘most insane statement of the night’ doesn’t go to Lando after all.

The cat thing ends up getting sort of explained in Bahrain, when Lando walks into his driver room and finds a small orange cat sitting on his couch.
Oscar’s cat, presumably.
And he kind of looks like Oscar, too. Slender, lean, and with a slightly grumpy, unimpressed expression on his face. It makes Lando laugh a little. Like owner, like pet, clearly. “Should I just call you Oscat, then,” Lando jokes, giving the cat a little head scratch.
The cat, Oscat, stops rubbing at Lando’s hand and just stares at him instead. Lando would almost say he was looking at him disapprovingly, but it is a cat, so he’s probably just imagining things.

He just doesn’t understand why Oscar stares so much.
It first comes to his attention at the pre-season media shoots. They have to be photographed in the new gear, and the new suits, and all the while a video camera is rolling to capture content for some behind the scenes pre-season footage. Lando likes to look back at the content they film, just to see how awkward he is.
He looks over some of the test photos while the videos load, and he sees Oscar’s eyes on him a lot of the time. Lando’s own are on the camera, his posture relaxed as he goes through the motions of what the team asks of him.

Lando seems to have come to the conclusion that his strategy of appeasing him isn't working, so he opts for being impersonal, objective. "You were optimistic, Carlos locked up, you both crashed. It was a racing incident, and you - you are being dumb about it."

He scoffs, upset, he has never left anything well alone, he digs his heels deeper. "I wasn't too optimistic, I was inexperienced, was I not?"

All in all, it’d been a shit weekend for Oscar. He knew he was beating himself up over understandable, expected rookie mistakes, he knew it was a great learning opportunity, he knew that the damage to his car hadn’t been entirely his fault on both occasions. Even if he didn’t show it or express it outwardly, it stung to watch his teammate stand on the podium - P3 - after all that’d happened. It hurt even more when that P3 became P2 before they’d even finished celebrating.
Lando moved up in the championship, so did the team. He deserved it, but it hurt like a bitch.

Oscar doesn’t really do entrances. Sure, in high society, it’s deemed necessary to stand at the top of some ridiculous staircase and wait for someone to announce your arrival. But that really only works in your favor if your name has any kind of good status associated with it.
Oscar’s not fortunate enough to fall into that category.

Getting ready for the Booklr Reads Australian challenge. These are a selection of Aussie books I own (fiction on the left, nonfic on the right) which I'll be choosing from during the month. I'm a mood reader so I have no idea what I'll actually end up picking but I'd like to get through at least a few of these.
List of titles and brief descriptions of each is below the cut for anyone looking for ideas for their own Australian reads.
The open book is The Tea Chest by Josephine Moon (my current read.) It's a rather sweet novel revolving around four women who's lives in Australia have been disrupted and who come together to open a tea shop in London.
A true History of the Hula Hoop by Judith Lanigan The book weaves together two parallel stories, one of Catherine, a struggling Aussie hula-hooping performance artist, and the other of Columbina, a feisty 16th century Italian female clown travelling through Europe with the first ever commedia dell'arte troupe, while also weaving in the history of the hula hoop.
Without Further Ado by Jessica Dettmann A romcom inspired by/paying homage to Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, in which the protagonist loves the Kenneth Branagh adaptation and finds her love life mirroring the plot.
Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne A romance inspired by Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, in which Victor Frankenstein's sister Angelika is anxious for love and decides to take matters into her own hands and create a suitable suitor.
Empires by Nick Earls This novel spans continents and centuries. It's split up into 5 parts, each occurring in a different time and place, but which all intertwine and connect. It's about two brother from Brisbane who've lead separate lives, but its also about humans in strange and difficult times, the way people see themselves, and the interconnectedness of all things.
The Tea Ladies by Amanda Hampson A cosy mystery set in 1965 Sydney. It follows a group of tea ladies who work in a fashion house getting tea and biscuits for the staff. Until a murder occurs in the building and the tea ladies become accidental sleuths.
Top End Girl by Miranda Tapsell Larrakia Tiwi actress Miranda Tapsell's memoir about her work and life as an Aboriginal woman and how she combined both when creating the film Top End Wedding.
Girt by David Hunt A humorous look at Australian history, from megafauna to Macquarie. Full of strange, ridiculous and bizarre stories.
Harlem Nights: The Secret History of Australia's Jazz Age by Deirdre O'Connell This is the story of the Sydney and Melbourne legs of American jazz band The Colored Idea's ill fated Australian tour in 1928. It's about the international rise of African American jazz, the history of Australia's entertainment industry and modernism in the arts in Australia, and the influence of the White Australia Policy beyond immigration issues.
Flash Jim: The Astonishing Story of the Convict Fraudster Who Wrote Australia's First Dictionary by Kel Richards This is a biography of conman, pickpocket and thief James Hardy Vaux who was sent to Australia as a convict. Not only does it go into explanations of his numerous crimes but also the origins of Australian English as Vaux also created a dictionary of the criminal slang of the colony, some of which can still be seen in modern Australian language.
Great Australian Mysteries by John Pinkney A collection of Australian true crime mysteries including inexplicable disappearances, unsolved murders and scientific enigmas.
Notorious Australian Women by Kay Saunders This book celebrates the lives of some of Australia's most fearless, brash, and scandalous women, including bushrangers, courtesans, and writers, amongst others.

Top 10 Innovative Cars
The cars of today owe a lot to the vehicles that came before them. Car design has always been about innovation and breaking new ground, but it's rare to find an automobile that can genuinely be said to have changed everything that came afterwards. The cars in this list were not your average motors - each and every one of them had an influence that reached far beyond their original conception. Here are the unique stories of ten of the most innovative and influential cars ever produced.
Tumblr media
Ford Model T (1908)
The first massed produced automobile.
The Model T - colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie - is generally regarded as the first affordable car in the world, and the vehicle that opened up a world of automobile travel to the middle classes. Ford's assembly line production made it all possible, setting a standard of manufacturing that influenced almost every industry in the world. Produced between 1908 and 1927, more than 15 million Tin Lizzies were sold, and the car gave mobility to the masses. For that reason, it is often considered to be one of the most influential developments in the history of design and production.
Tumblr media
Rolls Royce Silver Ghost (1908)
The first military car.
At the time of its development, the beautiful Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was considered to be at the forefront of luxury car design. However, it was to become something much more important than a toy for the rich. In 1914, all Silver Ghost chassis were re-purposed to form the basis for a brand new armored car, and the vehicles ended up playing a significant part in World War I, the Irish Civil War, the Turkish Wars and even World War II. In doing so, the Silver Ghost gave birth to the modern concept of mechanized military conflicts and ended the days of the horse cavalry.
Tumblr media
Austin Seven (1922)
The first 'people's car'.
The Austin 7 is a legendary British car that was hugely successful both in its home country and abroad. It is often seen as the forerunner to the modern automobile as we know it, and made a huge impact on the economy car market that was comparable to the innovative inroads made by the Ford Model T fifteen years before. It is seen as the first 'people's car' that further popularized motoring, and it was re-bodied to form the basis for the first cars produced by BMW, Nissan, Lotus, Jaguar and the Australian firm Holden.
Tumblr media
Volkswagen Beetle (1938)
The mechanical innovator that became a cultural icon.
It's hard to find another automobile with the rich history of the Volkswagen Beetle. The brainchild of Ferdinand Porsche, it was one of the first rear-engine automobiles and was specifically designed to travel at 100kph on Germany's autobahn highway system. It also featured one of the world's first air-cooled engine designs, but its impact went way beyond its mechanical innovations. Its production lasted for 65 years between 1938 and 2006 - the longest ever run for a single design concept - and it was the first car to truly become a cultural icon (helped by the 'Herbie' films of course), showing that motor cars had a place in wider entertainment.
Tumblr media
BMC Mini (1959)
The early 'hot hatchback'.
Another car that gained an influence outside of the motoring world is the much loved BMC mini. It was conceptualized as a car for everyone and went on to be produced in over 100 variants in countries all over the globe. It was also one of the first modern front wheel drive cars, and made the idea of the small 'hot hatchback' cool. This simple, little car which came to symbolize the 'swinging' 60s, was one of the first efficient 'city' cars and became a rally car, racing legend and movie icon in pictures like The Italian Job.
Tumblr media
Citroen DS (1955)
The groundbreaking car that influenced car design for years.
The Citroën DS always occupies high places when experts are looking to crown the best car of all time, and with good reason. This executive car was years ahead of its time and it's widely accepted that every modern car model can in some way trace its design back to the DS. It was the first mass production car to include disc brakes, featured an aerodynamic body design considered futuristic at the time but standard today, it had hydraulic suspensions and revolving headlights, and sold a then-record 12,000 units on its first day of release. It remains one of the most influential automobile designs ever produced.
Tumblr media
Jaguar E-Type (1961)
The luxury icon of the 1960s.
The Jaguar E-Type is one of the most beautiful sports cars ever to grace the road, and a legend of 1960s design. At a time when most cars were more about practicality than style and performance, the E-Type boasted top of speeds in excess of 150mph and could travel 0-60mph in under 7 seconds. It was the first production vehicle that didn't feature a body fixed to a separate chassis, instead, it employed a 'racing design' where the body was attached to a tubular framework. It will always be associated with high performance and sleek sophistication, and it influenced sports car designed long after it left the production line.
Tumblr media
Lamborghini Miura (1966)
The world's first super car.
The Lamborghini Miura was the world's first super car, and pushed the boundaries of what people thought was possible in automobile design. It ushered in the era of the high-performance, two-seater sports car and was lightning quick - comfortably the fastest road car in production when it was first released. The design shared much more in common with the race cars of the day, rather than the sleek touring car designs that had previously been favored by car firm bosses, including Ferruccio Lamborghini himself, who objected the original concept for the Miura, forcing the company's engineers to design it in their spare time.
Tumblr media
Chrysler Minivan (1983)
The first ever multi-passenger mini-van.
In 1983, Chrysler effectively invented the Minivan and changed the way cars were conceptualized for good. The Minivan's design grew from the need for a vehicle suitable for larger families, which still retained the driveability of a normal car. It looked boxy, but had a sliding side door that made loading the kids in the car easy, yet it was small enough to fit in a standard parking spot. Owning one came to symbolise both financial, adult success and, paradoxically, 'lost youth' in 1980s America. The car changed the landscape of automobile design forever.
Tumblr media
Toyota Prius (1997)
The world's first mass-produced electric hybrid vehicle.
The Toyota Prius was the first mass-produced hybrid, electric vehicle in the world, and its influence is probably yet to be fully realized. Just as the Model T and Austin 7 brought automobiles to the masses, the Prius broke new ground in the important quest for an electric powered alternative to modern gas guzzlers and remains one of the most environmentally friendly cars sold to date (now in its fourth generation, it remains in production). For all these reasons, the Prius deserves its place on this list of the most innovative car designs of all time.

Back in October, Hash Tayeh, the founder of Australia’s biggest independently-owned burger chain Burgertory, was filmed at a Melbourne rally leading chants of ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’.
He later tried to assure Jewish Australians that he was neither antisemitic nor wished Jews any harm.
On Monday, the Jordan-born entrepreneur wrote ‘an open letter to my Jewish friends’ following a wave of criticism for his involvement in the protest and calls to boycott his restaurants.  He vehemently rejected the allegation he held anti-Semitic views and claimed he was a ‘voice for peace’.  ‘At no stage have I ever called for harm to any individual, and I want to emphasise that I have deep and meaningful friendships with members of the Jewish community.’  — Mr Tayeh said ‘violence or eradication’ was against everything he stood for and he loved humanity too much’ to be anti-Semtitic – but stopped short of apologising directly. Instead, he sought to explain there were different interpretations of the slogan.   ‘Unfortunately there are two very stark differences in interpretation of the chant “From the river to the sea”, but from first-hand account (sic) I can assure you there is no one I know that means it in the sense that we want Jewish people dead or Israel eradicated,’ he wrote.
He also said he was proud to have opened one of his stores in a heavily Jewish neighborhood as proof as to how we can co-exist.
“I was genuinely proud to have my store in the heart of Caulfield. I knew Caulfield was [in] the dominant Jewish area, and I opened my store there, being loud and proud letting everyone hear that yes, I am a Palestinian. “For me, that was a beacon of unity and hope, and an example to the world of how Palestinians and Israelis can coexist, can support each other, can love each other.
That store was firebombed in November, prompting an anti-Israel protest at a nearby park opposite a local Synagogue, even though there was no evidence the firebombing was racially or politically motivated.
Fast forward to now, and Tayeh – much like his burgers – seems to be full of bull.
Tumblr media
I am not sure what sharing a post about Jewish involvement in the porn industry will do to Free Palestine, let alone a post from a Nazi account, which also claims ”the Holocaust is the root of woke culture” and that ”Jews go to synagogues to plot and scheme.”

Glee star Darren Criss dispels SAG-AFTRA strike myth ahead of Australian tour
Glee star Darren Criss has weighed in on the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood and confirmed that it won’t impact the set list for his upcoming Australian tour which kicks off in September. “I've done theatre stuff and TV stuff, I've done music of my own, I've written for other things, music from YouTube days. All of that will be there,” he confirms to 9Honey Celebrity. "I am sort of this living playlist of a lot of songs that have been featured throughout my career. [The tour] is a bit of everything.”
Best known for his role as Blaine Anderson on Glee, Criss even teases that a few of the most iconic songs he performed on the show will be on his Aussie set list. The Emmy and Golden Globe winner first headed Down Under in 2018 and promises fans will get everything from "whacky synth pop", to jazz and even a few tracks from his TV and Broadway career when he returns. Despite starting in hit shows like like The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and films, Criss can’t say much about his most famous projects due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood, which he stands in solidarity with.
He can, however, dispel a common myth about the strikes which have been making headlines in the US and here in Australia. "This isn't an actor saying, 'We want more money'. These are workers saying, 'We deserve to be treated more fairly,’” he says.
"Surprise, surprise; big corporations tend to take a big cut of things that perhaps they shouldn't, when looking at the disparity in wealth between their employees and the bosses,” Criss continues. A-listers like Jack Black, Daniel Radcliffe, Aubrey Plaza, Vanessa Hudgens, Hilary Duff and more have been photographed on the picket lines supporting the strike recently. But there has been some confusion about the strike as many everyday Aussies assume all Hollywood actors make bank.
Though Criss is by no means a spokesperson for SAG-AFTRA or other actors on strike, he says that’s just not the case. "There are actors that do make a significant amount of money that are in the minority of performers, and there is a huge percent of actors that do not fall under that category," he explains. According to a statement from SAG-AFTRA released earlier this month, the current state of the US entertainment industry has made it increasingly difficult for most actors to achieve a middle-class lifestyle.
"For people on the outside looking in, this seems like a classic case of a disparity in wealth," Criss continues. "But this is not about some of the more famous names that you would associate with making millions of dollars... the livelihood of so many people is being threatened." Most SAG-AFTRA members are small-time actors, not multi-millionaire movie stars, and they need Hollywood contracts to keep up with the rapidly changing entertainment industry. At the end of the day, this strike is just like any other labour dispute between employing entities and workers. This one just happens to have an all-star cast.
"If we were painters or something, a dispute between us and our employers and our union is not going to make headline news because the people on the picket lines aren't people that are on posters in your bedroom,” he says. Those are the same people across now counts among his many famous friends, his Instagram brimming with selfies snapped with the likes of Cher, Daniel Radcliffe and Lawrence Fishburne. One throwback snap from his last trip Down Under even shows the singer and actor enjoying an NRL game with Joe Jonas, both of them draped in Penrith Panthers scarves. Though it’s been years since the snap was taken, Criss is excited to return to Australia, a nation that played a pivotal role in his early success when A Very Potter Musical first went viral.
“Australia really drove our [YouTube] channel to a place where we were like ‘holy s—t, this might be something. We might have a company on our hands,’” he reveals. That success inspired Starkid Productions, the theatre company he co-founded and continues to play an active role in today. “The numbers that came from Australia were so staggering at that time that I have always had a really special place in my heart for Australia and for Starkid.” Darren Criss returns to Australia for a five-city national tour starting September 3, 2023. Tickets to all shows go on sale on Thursday, 27 July 2023.

the australian body horror film body melt (1993) has everything you could look for in terms of melting faces, hallucinated surgeries, exploding penises, sentient placentas, the wellness and beauty industry, and of course lots and lots of goo. however, it also does some interesting work mapping a person’s horror of their body onto australia’s horror of itself. the wealthy melbourne suburb and the isolated, hyper-modern wellness clinic that the film centers around are unnatural, artificial, and brittle in their lushness and cleanliness; as uncanny as the mass-produced houses, the thick hair gel, and the heavy makeup of the suburbs are, the outback and its dangerous creatures and idiosyncratic residents are more horrifying to the characters who venture out there. in a similar way, the normal state of the human body is unacceptable to the characters. they seek out supplements and regimens to bring their bodies to the highest possible state, and the development of their bodies into something perfect and alien tears them grotesquely apart. the image of the perfect body or the quest for it is a central theme in a good amount of body horror, as are the film’s other tangential themes of sex as the period of greatest vulnerability and horror for men and pregnancy or childbirth as the period of greatest vulnerability and horror for women. in many respects, indeed, i would call body melt (1993) a solid, classic-flavor body horror film; however, due to the imaginative practical effects, the well-timed moments of comedy, and the interesting framing within the context of the melbourne suburbs, this is a high compliment rather than any kind of criticism
