History suggests that the human spirit wanders farthest in the silent hours between midnight and dawn. Those dark fruitful hours, seldom recorded, whose secret flowerings breed peace and war, loves and hates, the crowning or uncrowning of heads.

The Fool by Laura J Fitzwilson - coming July 2024
The Fool is the story of a third-born prince who unwillingly becomes king after the death of his parents and twin brother. His kingdom and castle are in shambles, his family's murderers are getting bolder and he is utterly unprepared to be king, but Leo's biggest problem is the castle fool, who is determined to humiliate him and shake his already tenuous self-confidence. On top of it all, he’s slipping deeper into a romance that he knows he should be resisting with a man who won’t even tell him his name. It's about living up to expectations, daddy issues and the importance of love.
Vibes:
queer romance
humour
familial relationships
fantasy politics
set in fantasy Australia

seven little australians by ethel turner is a truly beautiful novel. i have read it time and time again and, now i've bought the audiobook, just finished listening to it for the 100th time.
it kind of breaks my heart that, i assume, this beautiful piece of literature is limited to australian readers so i'm coming on here to just recommend it to the broader population. you do not have to be australian to read this book.
if you like anne of green gables or the secret seven/famous five or little women i think you'll like this too. For me at least, they kinda have similar vibes?
ANYWAY read australian literature. there are some truly gorgeous masterpieces that have come out of this country. don't limit yourself to primarily american and british literature which is what i often find myself doing.

Irma Leopold, rock appreciator
I’ve read speculation that the rock returns Irma because Irma wants to make everyone happy, and her going missing, obviously, makes all her loved ones unhappy.
I think that’s possible. I also notice that Irma is the first to appreciate the rock, on the way over in the coach, saying it’s been waiting millions of years « just for us! »
The novel tells us that Irma’s ruling characteristic is her open-handed generosity and that she never « outgrows » this, and never lets her left hand know what her right hand is doing all her life. She appears to get this trait from her parents, who track down Albert Crundall and send him a cheque for a life-changing amount of money to show their appreciation for his rescuing Irma.
Now here’s something interesting: Irma can’t find a suitable wedding gift for the French teacher in the local shops, so she offers one of her own brooches, an emerald parrot which was given to her by her grandmother who has died and therefore won’t miss it. Irma’s enjoyment of precious stones is a thing: emeralds are mentioned more than once, and so are rubies. A parrot is mentioned among the birds attending the original picnic, too.
Perhaps, since Irma is generous with the rocks, the rock is generous with Irma in return.
ETA: Miranda says she doesn’t wear her diamond watch any more, and Irma says if she had one like it she’d wear it all the time, even in the bath. Irma never met a rock she didn’t like.

The Doctor had deactivated the alarm field they’d left to guard the bits and pieces. He’d improvised a tablecloth from one of his cleaner handkerchiefs, and rummaged through the bags until he’d found a chipped ex-UNIT enamel mug and a mug with the message MY PARENTS WENT TO SKARO AND ALL I GOT WAS A LOUSY PAIR OF GENES.
