The second movie that I decided to watch was called Musclecar. This film came out in 2017 and is directed by Dwayne Labbé. Quentin Tarantino said “no one shoots a car like an Aussie”, so I figured I’d watch this movie.
Here is the cover for the film
However this film was nothing like I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be a film with some crazy car chases and cars flipping in kind of a fast and furious style film. I was completely incorrect. Instead it was like some violent version of Herbie Fully Loaded. I definitely should have done some more research on what this film was.
Here is the trailer
Now there are some similarities in the two films that I watched. Lots of swearing, drinking and fighting. The plot seems to be far fetched, which is on brand with the ozploitation genre. Where Bambi, the main character, gets a new car and is broke. She then kills people and uses the alcohol in their blood to put gas in her car. This film also uses colors in a similar way as other Australian films. Like when Bambi cuts up a body the screen goes red and along with many other scenes in the garage.
But there are many differences. For one it doesn’t seem as high budget as Wake in Fright. In this movie the camera seems to move a lot and the transitions aren’t as smooth as other ozploitation films. The actors aren’t great. There are little animated cartoons to tell a story in between scenes that are black and white but will also highlight the red.
Here is an example of one of the cartoons in the Musclecar
I did not enjoy this movie very much. I thought it was quite stupid, but that’s what makes it fit the genre. A website called Fear Forever talks about the movie and says “MUSCLECAR knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to take itself too seriously. It’s refreshing when a film completely embraces the B-movie within (Grant).” Which made me realize that the film might actually be quite good. I was looking at it in a serious way but I was looking at it all wrong. For instance there is a scene in the movie where a dentist, who they are forcing to be a doctor to the car, and he tells them the car has AIDS. It may just be the most dramatic part of the entire movie.
