It’s always funny when anglo writers looking to express a specific idea casually pluck a cool ready-made monosyllabic phrase from their language’s unlimited supply and Romance language translators just curl up in the fœtal position and cry. I'm reading a text in which the American author talks about ‘Haves’ vs ‘Have-Nots’ vs ‘Have-Mosts’ —the poor French translator translated this as ‘ceux-qui-ont’ (the French language: don’t worry I’m just getting warmed up), ‘ceux-qui-n’ont-pas’ (nice we’ve doubled the syllable count but we mustn’t falter), and the beautiful ‘ceux-qui-ont-plus-que-tous-les-autres’ (300% expansion ratio let’s gooo! we did it great work everybody.) From 2 to 8 syllables—the minute I saw that bulky thing I knew it had to be Have-Mosts in the original and I was giggling. The anglo author happily proceeds to use the phrase ‘Have-Mosts’ 5 times per paragraph because why not! it’s so quick and wieldy :) we don’t actually need the word wieldy 'cause it’s just the normal state of our language <3 meanwhile you can feel the French translator’s desperation grow as she is reduced to juggling with “those” and “the latter” to avoid summoning her creature. Eventually she reaches the acceptance stage and uses ceux-qui-ont-plus-que-tous-les-autres again like, it’s my monster. I shouldn’t reject it

#language tag #and when anglo authors use a somewhat long and clunky phrase french translators are like no that's our thing?#they're trying to steal our thing. we have no choice but to make the phrase even longer and clunkier. perfidious albion mustn't win this #like how He Who Must Not Be Named went from 6 to 12 syllables in the french HP translation (RIP voice actors who had to dub it)#even though there were shorter options? but i suspect the translator picked the 12 syllable one due to #our national obsession with alexandrine metre

something something mike wheeler is so used to being brushed off and ignored by his own family that he learns to make his feelings loud and obnoxious around most people because it’s better to be ignored when you’re being annoying on purpose than to be ignored when you’re being vulnerable on accident. he learns to roll his eyes and be slow to trust and be critical of newcomers because his friends are his people— his most trusted, his tried and true ride or dies, but after you make it into his circle he will die for you. he scowls and he glares and he tries so hard to be somebody he’s not because he thinks things will be easier for him that way, because he’s been bullied his whole life. he’s a little abrasive but he softens around his best friend, who can get him to open up without even saying a word. he likes syrup on his eggs and cheesy pop music. he’s the paladin, he’s a fighter, he’s a source of good. he’s will’s light in the darkness and he finds that same light in will too. he’s surprised every time a parental figure hugs him. he’s seen his best friends die and come back and die again. he spent a year searching for a purpose and he found it in will byers. he feels like nobody needs him, but all he wants is to be needed. to be wanted. he feels like he’s drifting apart from his people, until will reels him in, tethers him, and says hey, remember when you said asking me to be your friend was the best thing you ever did? well being your friend gives me the courage to fight on.

Every now and then I just get the kind of comment that makes me stop working on a fic and just has me going 'how about you write it since you're so concerned with correcting me on this one tiny thing that doesn't matter because it's fanfiction actually'

So someone sent me an anon ask saying something like “well you’re terrible at writing so maybe you should stop and get a new hobby” I don’t want to bother publishing the ask (already blocked and deleted oop) to give attention to it but one thing about it kind of stuck with me. My question for people with this thought process…. do you…..do you think you have to be “good” at something for you to be ‘allowed’ to have it as a hobby? My dudes..hobbies are about doing things you enjoy… for you and you alone…. it has nothing to do with being arbitrarily ‘good’ or not friend.

I highly recommend local bookstores because nowhere else can you pick up a book that is no different from any other books around it, which include publications by such authors as Ursula fucking Le Guin, and discover only once you get home that it's printed in batches of 200 and doesn't even have an associated ISBN. This has happened to me multiple times, and it is the best. This is not ironic, it's the funniest experience and you really will only get this kind of appreciation and uplifting of local and small artists in indie bookstores.

And also those books will usually knock your fucking socks off.

While the fandom is a mess because of The Spoiler, can I just take a moment to fixate wildly on something that changes nothing? I can? Cool. So...... Kaito is left-handed.

Hear me out-

I understand that this is meant to be a show of Midoriko's keen observational skills however;

It's so amazingly specific.

The fact that it includes other people that come to this house means that other common guests are being considered in her data set, so we can exclude the possibility that there's some kind of household rule against leaving a torn bit.

But even then Kaito is supposedly the only one that it rips on the right edge for, so there's got to be a fundamental difference in how he's tearing it compared to everyone else. And so being left-handed is less common than being right handed so that fits actually.

Also just overthinking it but if the tp is gonna rip it's gonna do it on the far side from where you started tearing.

But anyway that impacts nothing really, since he's a magician he's probably trained to the point of being functionally ambidextrous, but maybe he favors his left a little in situations where there's no need to calculate his movements.
