I don't use big, complex words because I want to look smart. I use them because I literally forgot the simpler ones.

So, since I realized I was autistic I've tried really hard to stop my internalized ableism and starts unmasking more. But lately, at the top of my progress, things just started going downhill. I started experiencing internalized ableism again, trying to mask more, and just feeling worse. Why's that? What'd I do wrong?
hello !!
although unmasking can be very, very helpful, the process of unmasking itself can be extremely draining without you even realizing it
i’m thinking you may be experiencing something called autistic burnout, which is essentially a depressive episode that many autistic people will go through at least once during their lifetime
this little comic book panel from @autiebiographical describes it well 👇🏼
these episodes can last days, weeks, months, or in extreme cases, years. but it is most definitely that you can get through and will
it’s important to rest, avoid social situations when you can (but still let in people with lower energy and people that will respect the fact that you need time), interact with the things that make you happy—or just content—in order to get through this
basically, just consider yourself as your main priority, because you are

Auctober 2022
Day 1: Stims
It wasn't until I was a little bit older that I realized what stims were. Growing up, I always just called it being fidgety, and it wasn't until I started being more accepting of myself as an autistic person that I learned it was called stimming.
My favorite stims are bouncing, flapping and shaking my hands (flappy hands are happy hands), and moving/dancing with my music. I stim a lot to music, because the rhythm of the song flows with my stim.
Also, thank you to @autiebiographical for making Auctober a thing! I love you and your work immensely. :)

Auctober Month: Day 8 (Diverse)
*I skipped Day 7 (Hyperfocus) because I’m not sure when I hyperfocused on something to be honest. I remember using my special interests in my art projects in college (e.g. making a TV guide for a self-promotion project), but I don’t know if that counts*
One thing that I love about cartoons is that they are stepping up in representation and diversity, especially in the autistic community. Here are a few of my favorite canonically autistic characters.
From left to right: Norma Khan (Dead End: Paranormal Park), Carl Gould (Arthur), Max (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood)

Auctober 2022
I don't know if I'll be able to keep up with this all month, but I saw @autiebiographical 's post and got so excited about this, so I just had to join in however I'm able!
Stims! I love me some good hand flapping. Jumping up and down and leg bouncing are some more high-energy ones. Sometimes I'll layer my fingers over each other, one by one, and then layer them in reverse order - that's actually the first stim I remember doing!
Sometimes, when I'm trying to sleep, I'll just sort of bend my foot up and down like I'm pressing on and releasing a pedal. Still not sure what that one's about, to be honest (/pos).
Tapping my fingers in sequence sometimes drives other people a little crazy, but having a laptop where I can type and get essentially the same thing done helps with that.
Chewing is also a really good stim, but I don't have any chewelry or anything yet, and gum just doesn't work for me, unfortunately. Someday, though, I'm gonna get myself a nice chewing stick.
Granted, there are a few stims that aren't so good that I have (under the cut, content warning for self harm), but those are some of my most common ones.
Sometimes, when I'm really frustrated, I'll hit myself on my head with the heel of my palm, or I'll dig into my skin with my nails. Often, regardless of how I'm feeling, I find myself picking and pulling hairs.
When I was a kid, I also used to pick and chew and rip at my nails. I'll be honest, I'm not sure what made me stop doing that, but I'm grateful nonetheless.
I also occasionally chewed on my shirts when I was younger? I don't know why, I guess I just craved the flavor of fabric. I really have always been a chaotic little gremlin.

LOUD
Ever have one of those days when suddenly everything seems really loud? A day when the microwave door really SLAMS? When FOOTSTEPS seem to echo? When the sound of a teaspoon in a cup rings like a BELL? When your device seems loud even when it’s one click above silent? When your keyboard is making an amazing amount of CLATTER?
Yeah, that’s me today.

Advice
We have gone through a couple of years of lockdowns, financial hardship, weird theories on the internet, Zoom for school and meetings, and wondering if just going to the grocery store was going to kill us. That’s a lot. And we’ve been doing it without a break. Without any respite. The result of this is a lot of us feel like crap.
We’re tired.
It’s called burnout.
It’s perfectly natural.
Cut yourself some slack.
If you need to stim, do it.
If you need to cry, do it.
If you need to cocoon, do it.
If you need to say no, do it.
We’ve had a hell of a couple of years.
Take some time for yourself.
Take care of yourself.

No everyone isn’t a little bit autistic
Any more than everyone is a little bit left handed because they can carry something in either hand.
No, everyone isn’t a little bit autistic
Any more than everyone is a little bit asthmatic because they occasionally get out of breath.
No, everyone isn’t a little bit autistic
Any more than everyone is a little bit handicapped because their foot fell asleep.

My #1 post of 2022
Isn’t it fun when someone throws you a sentence fragment and assumes you have a clue what they mean? Tonight for example my SO came over, held out a half full bottle of water, and said, “My water. ”
I froze for a couple of seconds while I pondered this. The statement could have meant;
“Is this water in this bottle or something else?” As we have no history of putting anything else in water bottles in the refrigerator this seemed like the least likely meaning.
“This is my water. Keep your hands off”. This seemed unlikely, though not as improbable as the first one. We share everything and there were a bunch of bottles in the fridge so there really wasn’t anything special about this one. No reason to get possessive.
“Is this my water or yours?“. We both knew that I hadn’t opened one and we had been together all day, and there was no one else around to open one. Because of this, there was no reason for them to ask.
“Would you like some of my water?” This seemed to be the most likely possibility so I want with it.
After a long pause to sort through the various meanings and the probabilities of each, and once I selected the most likely one to formulate an appropriate response, I replied, “No thanks, I’m good.”
People wonder why I don’t respond quickly. “It’s a simple question, just answer,” is what i hear a lot. Well, it would have been if you had asked a question. But you didn’t. You dropped two random words while holding a bottle. I had to decode what you meant. You and other neurotypical people may pick up on these subtle meanings*, but I don’t. Just say what you mean.
Neurotypical people are so weird sometimes.
*(the bottle was tilted slightly toward me to indicate it was an offer, how could I miss that? /end sarcasm)

Autism ask game- 1, 7, 10, 16, 18, 44, 45, 49
hey, thanks for sending these!!
1 - how old were you when you found out you were autistic?
technically, 5. i was officially diagnosed with sensory processing disorder when i was 5 - which was still called sensory integration disorder at the time. but as i got older, much more symptoms started showing up outside of sensory stuff, such as stimming, hyperfixations, photographic memory, and food aversions. i started suspecting i was autistic when i was 15-16, but my parents dismissed it because i didn't "look" autistic. by the time i was 18 or 19 i was watching and reading a lot of things online about autism and i had never felt more seen. my parents have learned a lot more since then and now accept me as autistic.
7 - do you find it hard to make friends?
oh DEFINITELY. i have people that i talk to at college but i am awful at starting conversations or maintaining friendships. as far as friends i regularly hang out with go, i've had the same 2 friends since the mid-2010s.
10 - what are your most common stims?
at the moment i'm fidgeting with half of a pop-it ball - one that was badly glued together in manufacturing and was ripped apart by me fidgeting with it so much. there are holes in the two halves as well because of how much i poke them in and out. so that's a common stim for me. i also have a regular pop-it that's not a ball, a metal slinky and aaron's thinking putty. i rarely sit at my desk without fidgeting with something.
i also hum a lot and rock around in my seat.
16 - do you have any autistic friends?
i have neurodivergent IRL friends, but they aren't autistic. i do have autistic internet friends though! if y'all are reading this i love y'all <3
18 - do you find it easier to get along with other autistic people?
yes, 100%. i can talk about the stuff i go through and the things i feel and they understand most of the time.
44 - who are your favorite autistic bloggers? say something nice about them.
i recently found autismisaokay and they reblog really relatable stuff about autism! i also love cypopps and autiebiographical, who post comics about being autistic.
45 - favorite autistic celebrity?
tbh, i don't think i know any autistic celebrities
49 - what's something you find hard to do because of autism?
there are lots of things. small talk, walking from class to class if i'm overstimulated, going to the mall, trying new foods, making new friends, etc.

Day 30: Routines
Can’t believe that tomorrow is the last day of Auctober! Thanks, @autiebiographical so much for doing this!
Routines are definitely something I love, sometimes a little too much. I can get so caught up in my routine that I forget to let go and enjoy stuff sometimes, which I’m trying to work on. Luckily I have very spontaneous friends, so letting go of my routine is a lot easier when I with them.
Routines are comforting to me. Many say that monotony and predictability are boring, but to me, routines are a constant I can rely on, and I work best when I have one. I do try to be flexible, since it’s good to get out of my comfort zone, but with the exception of my aforementioned friends, I have to plan for spontaneity so I can adjust my routine accordingly.
