Neurotypicals all need to be reminded that if you made fun of someone in school for being “weird,” you were making fun of autistic people and that’s ableist and wrong. If you don’t educate yourself and change, you’re a bad person.
Things I saw kids get made fun of for:
Walking on their toes
Communicating directly
Not making eye contact
Making too much eye contact
Having special interests
Not having the right interests
Having few friends
Trying to make friends
Being “too” happy
Feeling overwhelmed
Being shy
Not talking much
Talking too much
Having fun being silly
Being serious
Doing well in class (nerd)
Doing poorly in class (stupid)
Any noticeable stims
The way we eat
A lot of other shit
Yeah, those kids were neurodivergent and you were an asshole to them. Do you see all the contradictions in that list? You never actually had a problem with anything we did or didn’t do. You had a problem with our existence. The way we talked, walked, breathed, you bullied us for it.
What’s even more disgusting and insane:
Lots of these kids chose to spend their elective periods with the special ed kids class. Lots of them grew up to be teachers, SpEd teachers, psychologists, etc. not because they want to help autistic people, but because they want to feel superior.
A big fuck you to all of the bullies and jerks that treated us like shit simply for being different from you.
I hope you’ve changed, but I know you probably haven’t. You’re doing the same shit, all that’s changed is you’re getting paid for it now. Go to hell. (A very particular section of hell where you’re marginalized for your neurotype and forced into ABA therapy and treated exactly how you treated us).

you've been told all your childhood that it's rude to interrupt. and now you have grown up and speak only when there is a pause in the conversation. but suddenly you understand that neurotypicals are all interrupting each other and this is quite normal. but you are already used to not interrupting and waiting for a pause in the conversation and do not understand how to normally maintain a conversation in order to talk, but at the same time not to seem rude

autistic people are allowed to fit autism stereotypes
i take things literally. i don’t get a lot of neurotypical humor and often feel left out of the joke or even feel like i’m the joke sometimes. i’m gullible. there’s no way to sugarcoat it or put it more nicely, i’m just gullible. i don’t always know what’s satire. i’m socially awkward and have a hard time befriending or remaining friends with anybody who isn’t like me.
much of the autism community puts so much emphasis on “all autistic people aren’t x” and not enough on “who cares if we’re x, we deserve rights”
this goes doubly for ID and nonspeaking autistics btw i just can’t speak to that experience personally

It's ok that white autistic people aren't familiar with autistic people of color's experiences. That's not the problem.
The problem is how many white autistic people seem to think their experiences are universal, that they can speak for and over autistic people of color.
Being autistic doesn't take away white privilege. Being white and autistic still has privilege over autistic BIPOC, and even neurotypical BIPOC.
Neurodivergence doesn't exempt anyone from deconstructing and unpacking white supremacy.

My entire childhood: Don't use that tone with me!/Don't talk to me like that!/Why do you have such an attitude?
Me, who didn't know about autism: What?

I didn’t fully realize the extent to which I am affected by sensory overload until I decided to accommodate myself anyway. Wearing headphones in public keeps my anxiety so much lower.
It’s kinda ironic that the reason I didn’t notice I’m autistic is because I’m autistic. My struggles with interoception made it hard for me to recognize my sensory issues.

i hate that i have no volume control. i try so, so hard to reel it in but when im happy, excited, relaxed, comfortable, etc. i talk and laugh loud. it’s as involuntary as laughter. i don’t realize until i get shushed, then i feel like my heart got stomped on. it’s so frustrating because i KNOW it is annoying but can’t seem to help it. getting called on it always takes me from happy to feeling awful in a millisecond

One of the impacts, for me at least, of growing up autistic, but not diagnosed or anything, is that I don’t expect to get help. I will help other people, pitch in when something is going on and either money or an extra pair of hands is required. I’m happy to do that. But if I need help? No, I honestly do not expect anyone to step up, ever. This is why when I need to do something and my partner says “Ask **** for a hand,” it honestly comes as a surprise. The thought never occurs to me. I spent my whole life figuring out how to get out of jams, get something done, achieve something, learn a skill, by myself. The idea that someone would be happy to help me with something is just not even on my radar. Then even after my partner suggests it I’m still hesitant to ask because I just know deep down in my bones that it’s an imposition. That I shouldn’t ask.
