Mary Holland as Jane Caldwell in “Happiest Season” (2020)
Honestly, there are a lot of reasons to cry in this movie, but as an autistic woman, this scene hit me like a goddamn freight train. I cried basically the entire time I made this gifset because it felt so raw and relatable.
Seeing clearly autistic coded characters have their moment and making them more than just comedic relief doesn’t happen often enough, and Mary Holland did such an amazing job in the writing and acting of this scene. I am so grateful for this movie ❤️
“I am something.”

What are the Do’s and Dont’s when writing an autistic character??? 🤔
huh that’s a good question. as an autistic writer i don’t… really have experience having to ask this, because my pov is autistic by default. let’s see…
read about real autistic experiences, not just autism as written about by allistic people. check the tag ‘actuallyautistic’ to read posts from people actually on the spectrum. keep an eye out for topics that get repeatedly mentioned. (for example, we tend to talk about our sensory issues a lot, and make memes about communication difficulties).
read things by autistic writers! tumblr, please leave suggestions in the notes.
get an autistic beta reader to review your writing, and give input
i would love to see an autistic character infodumping in a way that charms the audience. it’s something many of us are self-conscious about, and are sometimes ostracized for, but I actually find it lovely to hear people on the spectrum sharing their excitement with the world.
i love characters who express things in awkward ways but still manage to make a point. i love characters whose conversationally gawkiness makes them unconventional but still endearing. who are strange and ungainly, but still loved, still delightful.
unconventional conversation styles! i tend to bounce between overly talkative and withdrawn. sometimes i babble. i also tend to use a lot of metaphors to explain my experiences in a way other people will understand. and I check in a lot, asking “Does that make sense? Do you ever get that too?” If people don’t seem to ‘get it’, I try repeating myself using different metaphors, different wording. you’ll see many autistic people using repetition and other language quirks.
I think there’s a lot of value in writing an autistic character with the attitude “I know from experience that a lot of people won’t understand me, but I understand myself, and I like myself regardless.” Quiet confidence is hard-won for people like us, and I like seeing it represented.
you’ll also see many autistic people who are naturally accepting of other people’s quirks. we know what it’s like to be isolated for being different. i find that i’m rarely phased by traits that other people are self-conscious about revealing. interestingly, i’ve had many new acquaintances come out to me (as queer, as neurodiverse) and share insecurities they usually keep hidden. being on the outside means other ‘outsiders’ tend to recognize you as a safe person. even if i can’t communicate the ‘standard’ way, i still have value as a community member, and people will sometimes seek me out in unexpected ways.
sometimes we need quiet time. the world is an overwhelming place. i can’t count the number of times i’ve had to say, unexpectedly “I need to stop, I need to sit down, I can’t talk right now”. a good friendship dynamic might have a character whose supporting of that.
autistic people get frustrated, just like anyone else! i’d love to see a character frustrated at their communication struggles, and a patient allistic friend giving them time, saying It’s ok. I’m still here. People figuring out ways to support each other through trial and error is my jam.
anyone else have advice for allistic writers writing autistic characters? Also, any good recommendations for fics with autistic characters? one that stands out to me is ‘true, and unafraid of toil’, a fantastic beasts fic about an autistic newt scamander.

so i’m pretty sure Baby is autistic
like more sure than just about any other character i’ve ever seen. i just got back from my second viewing and now i’m more convinced than ever. evidence:
adherence to routine: baby still eats at the diner where his mom worked, and he still orders from the kids menu. the waitress said that he’d been coming there for as long as she’s worked there; baby has basically lived his entire life around that diner, and he hasn’t updated his routine in years because the routine brings him comfort.
delayed echolalia: a significant portion baby’s spoken dialogue is actually just him repeating things he’s heard before in other contexts. we all do this from time-to-time, everybody likes a good quote, but baby does it... a lot. like, way more than normal. he seems FAR more comfortable speaking in quotes than he does speaking off-the-cuff.
immediate echolalia: and he doesn’t always store quotes for later. sometimes he repeats them back immediately. this kind of parroting is something autistic children have been known to do to help them process what is being said, not realizing that their repetition is being taken as a response. when doc asks baby “are you in?” and baby repeats “am I in?” almost automatically, you can tell this is an exchange they’ve gone through many times, likely going all the way back to when baby was a kid. perhaps that’s how it started.
memorization - this goes hand-in-hand with echolalia; you have to remember quotes in order to repeat them, after all. but it goes beyond mere snippets of dialogue; baby is able to memorize extremely complicated plans and rundowns and repeat them verbatim after hearing them exactly once. he does this twice; once when doc is telling the crew the plan, and once when he goes into the post-office and sam gives him the rundown of the security.
hyperfixation: baby lives and breathes music. owns dozens upon dozens of ipods that he has clearly gone through the trouble of buying off other people, each of which is loaded with different songs for different occasions and each individual library of which he has memorized. has keyboards and turntables and other mixing tools to create his own music, has a huge case of tapes of his own stuff, and a wall of vinyl records he’s collected. choreographs his getaway driving to music. hell, choreographs his entire life to music, to the point where baby has to stop what he is doing to restart, rewind, or find a song multiple times over the course of the film, even when his actual life is in jeopardy.
sensory issues: constantly listens to music to drown out his tinnitus. for many people, the ringing from tinnitus is something they can get used to and ‘tune out’ so to speak. baby’s inability to do this suggests that either his tinnitus is more severe, or he has some form of sensory disorder that prevents him from ignoring unwanted stimuli, forcing him to override it with something else.
savant syndrome: there’s really no way around this; baby is goddamn driving prodigy. if he were a middle-age man, his skill would put him among the best in the world; the fact that he’s this good now, and that he’s been this good since he was an actual child puts him so far into the stratosphere that we can’t even see him anymore. like, sorry, kevin spacey, but it’s not baby’s personal playlist that makes him the best driver on the fucking planet; there is something else going on in that kid’s brain, and whatever it is, it ain’t normal.
add all of this to the fact that baby’s intense focus and quiet, seemingly emotionless demeanor makes his criminal associates suspicious of him to the point where various idiots accuse him of having ‘mental problems,’ being ‘not on planet earth,’ with one particularly dumb asshole even throwing the R-word at him, and I’d say at the very least you have a strong case for baby being anything but neurotypical.
“I’m not slow. I’m fast.”
hell yeah you are. i love my fast autistic son. 🚗

odd little things i want autistic characters doing from now on
I feel like there’s a list of ‘typical autistic traits’ that people go to for autistic characters but there’s really so much more than, you know, being super smart and not liking to be touched and rocking back and forwards. so here
• sitting on odd surfaces
• striking random poses for no reason?? just doing a random lil dance??
• clicking their teeth to the tune of a song stuck in their head
• counting all the sides and corners on any given object at any given moment
• tapping rhythms with their feet
• really in tune with the vibe of places?? if a house or a shop or something has a bad vibe™️ they will not go there
• music is too loud today. tomorrow it will be too quiet. does the perfect volume exist? no.
• crosslegged on chairs
• do not touch my bed!!! you will infect it!!
• just standing in corners or against walls or something, they look really awkward but they’re actually just chilling
add more!!

This pride month remember that yes! Autistic ace, aro, and aroace people exist!
And seeing your faves as autistic AND aspec, no matter which "a" it is, is absolutely fucking great. You're not infantilizing them for it, SPECIFICALLY if you're autistic, aro/ace, or both!
Just please, respect us, autistic people, when applying those headcanons. We, as people, have always been codified/stereotypes as "incapable of feeling compassion/love/attraction/etc". I've heard the love thing from my own mom.
Don't do it just because you see them as autistic. Don't do it just because you see them as aro/ace. When we're both, we simply are! And your headcanons should be like that too!
If your hc is that they're autistic, then they simply are! If your hc is that they're aspec, they simply are! Don't connect them just because. That's harmful, and it feels like a must, when it doesn't work like that.
This has been a psa by your fellow ace autistic trans dude! I would die for my aro and aroace autistic siblings 💪✨🏳️‍🌈
Oh! And if you bring discourse to this post I'll break your bones! This is abt autistic lgbt+ people feeling loved and I couldn't give less of a shit!

The new short “Loop” on Disney + is amazing. It is a great depiction of someone with autism (high spectrum) and that you can always connect with them if you just take your time. If you get the chance, watch it. It’s about 11 minutes and absolutely wonderful and beautiful to see.

You can run ahead with autistic Hermione and whatever, and thats fine, and I do like it, but consider:
Autistic Ron
special interest in chess
has no idea how to communicate?
asked about scar after knowing him for 0.2 seconds
despite it being what others might think of as a sensitive subject
falls for what his brothers (who are known for being pranksters) said about having to fight a troll
instantly ride or die
Autistic Harry
special interest in DADA
also has no idea how to cummunicate?
doesn’t see everyone else issues with shit like saying Voldemort or why his scar might be a sensitive subject
bought an entire fucking food trolley because it seemed like the easiest way to befriend this stranger
instantly ride or die after like 2 minutes
strong wrong/right morals
didn’t even occur to him to lie to dudley about being able to use magic on him until Hagrid pointed it out?
I could go on

I was nervous, understandably. Humans had a remarkable, fearsome reputation. First contact with the human race had been when the Shianb research colony had selected a familial unit for study and the genetic-mother had torn her thumb from it’s socket in order to escape a binding, strangled a Shianb scientist guard with her bare hands, and violently killed any Shianb that had tried to stop her until she had retrieved her young and mate and then piloted the ship colony back to her home planet. It was a terror inspiring event, but one that was quickly shown to not be unusual. As we figured out how to speak and deal with the human’s peacefully, the InterSystemAlliance had adopted a human phrase directly into the ‘Language, Physiology, and Behavior of Inter Stellar Species Data Collection’: Don’t fuck with humans. Which oddly enough had a completely different meaning to the phrase “don’t fuck humans”.
Hirriib linguists were practically oozing excitement pheromones over the flexibility of the word ‘fuck’.
But I had managed to hire a pair of humans to my ship. Genetic-siblings they were, which ensured previously established pack bonds which were essential to human health, and one was a scientist as well as a weapons expert, a dual specialization common among humans. They were boarding today and I was excited and nervous, my cranial ingota flashing despite my efforts to keep myself under control.
With a trill of the automated doors opening, the humans stepped into the meeting room. They were tall, one ducking through the doorway and the other a length of their skulls shorter. The tall one had their dark cranial hair shorn off and was wearing a loose fitting torso covering with the words #redinstead written on it. Their eyes flitted around the room, never once looking at me directly while their hands made a rhythmic flapping gesture that seemed quite similar to my own habit of contracting my spinal spikes to soothe myself. That must be Danyell Jimson, the scientist and weapons expert. The shorter one had to be Damon Jimson, the hand to hand combat expert. He had impressive cranial hair that stood out from his head in dark, tight curls and pieces of metal inserted through the flesh of his brow hair and the cartilage of his ears in a display of fierceness. He was also wearing a torso covering that proclaimed #redinstead. I would have to query what that phrase meant and log it. He stepped forward and held his hand out in the traditional human greeting of ‘not immediately aggressive’ and clasped my paw gently which meant he was friendly. I held my paw out to the taller one, Danyell Jimson, but Damon Jimson held a large hand out to stop me.
“Don’t touch them.”
My ingota flashed with confusion and anger. “You are isolating them? Human’s require contact to strengthen pack bonds! That is cruel!”
Damon Jimson shook his head, a visual negative cue. “No, not all humans are comfortable with physical contact.”
Danyell Jimson was staring at my ingota and made several gestures with their hands that I was not familiar with.
“They want to know why your crest is changing colors.”
“It is my ingota. It is a visual communication of my emotions. How did they communicate with you? I was told that humans are not telepathic and do not communicate outside of my species’ auditory range?” I was flashing confusion again and Danyell Jimson was staring at my ingota with the hyper focus of a predator. I contracted my spinal spikes.
“It’s sign language, their hands are making words. It’s a visual communication language. Danyell doesn’t communicate verbally.”
“Amazing!” I blurted out, broadcasting awe and fascination. I had been unaware that humans communicated nonverbally beyond simple body language. The only other species besides my own with a form of visual communication beyond basic body language within the contacted solar systems was humans! I couldn’t suppress a flash of giddiness at the thought that my species held a similarity to the intimidating humans.
Danyell Jimson spoke with their hands again and Damon Jimson bared his teeth in a amused/friendly/pleased visual cue. “They said they’ll teach you ASL if you teach them what your crest colors mean.”
My ingota lit up with excitement. “This is excitement. I would be most interested in exchanging non verbal language knowledge with you, Danyell Jimson.”
Danyell Jimson tapped rapidly on their handheld device and held it to their head with the excitement color emanating from the screen, making a gesture with their other hand, a clenched hand with the ‘thumb’ pointing up, a visual cue for approval/excitement/agreement.
I mimicked the gesture with my paw, extending my prehensile dew claw in lieu of a thumb. I could tell that I would greatly enjoy developing a pack bond with Danyell.
