Your art is amazing and I could stare at it all day! But I'm curious about your Ocs, specifically Jacque and Sloane.

Did you change anything about them? Like appearance or storyline?

The issue with Sloane and Jacque is that they never really had an established setting or storyline to begin with, and it has given me a lot of headaches over the years when it comes to actually doing something with them and develop them into more than just vague personality concepts. The sketches from last month is me trying to actually give them a setting and story to inhabit for once lmao.

I didn't use to actually write shit for my characters, but my friends have enabled me and I'm now suffering from trying to write actual characters and story. This has been most successful with Otto and Siskin, my tiefling oc's, and Jacque and Sloane to a lesser degree. To claim that they have an actual storyline is a bit of a stretch still, but I've established a more concrete dynamic and aesthetic for them that are both pretty different from what little I had for them to begin with.

In my recent re-hashing of them, the two of them meet as Sloane is taken as a prisoner of war after some sort of ~ambiguous magical disaster~ with her at its center. Jacque is a commanding officer of the opposing side, who for seemingly very selfish reasons offers Sloane protection in exchange for her service.

It's a fantasy setting with a magic system centered around promise, oaths and their binding power. Sloane is an anomaly, someone who's made a desparate choice that she's paying dearly for, and Jacque is someone with quite a bit of power, but not as much as she would like, who's trying to overturn the shape of the conflict they're in.

Their dynamic is tense with a spicy power imbalance. Sloane has wings because it's sexy. That's the basic framework I've got.

Golden hour creeps up the walls. Nie Mingjue drowses in and out of a whispered argument about who had stolen what item of whose clothes when (Jin Guangyao, a Mitski concert t-shirt, two days ago, although it is debatable whether the shirt was Xichen’s or Mingjue’s to begin with, hence the argument) and only comes to when someone calls her name. (Or: On home, and the inherent eroticism of sharing spaces with the people you love.)

He charges $50 for a pair of lobes. Doesn’t own an autoclave, thinks alcohol is fine. Tells clients to use undiluted tea tree only. Keeps the same gloves for the entire process.

Harley: did a psychology undergrad but didn’t finish, got with the joker and agreed to apprentice under him instead, he drove her literally insane. She hated it so much she just thought the job would not be for her but then couldn’t go back to college so agreed to work with ivy.

Favourite piercing: Rims because she can get them done in 3 minutes or less.

One hundred million revolving apprentices that end up leaving due to poor work ethic.

Rogue shop

Riddler: Not APP qualified because he sees himself as better than them. Skilled but does NOT take criticism. Tells people riddles to take their minds off the piercings which works weirdly well. Does not do oral piercings bc of saliva. Doesn’t let anyone else near the autoclave.

Scarecrow: Obsessed with history and relationship with queer culture, likes the fear element (weirdo)

Croc: bad at it. Left Joker’s studio and lied on his CV. Floundering constantly but refuses to admit or ask for help.

Penguin: Leaves for a cig break every ten minutes. Not allowed to sterilise jewellery because he’ll smoke while he does.

Ivy: spiritual/cultural piercings, has incense on constantly, does scarification too, studio is too new to be certified but works to APP standard. Thinks Bruce is too up himself and won’t collaborate with him on anything, doesn’t let men pierce in her studio and lets the others pierce male clients.

Harley (post-joker): learns to love the job again due to wlw tendencies and having a safe environment, great with kids and specialises in kids lobes. Gains huge clientele by having sessions where she listens to your issues and pierces you therapeutically.

Babs: Was offered a place in Bruce’s studio but turned it down to work here. Very skilled, likes to pierce daiths and industrials.

Piercings: Symmetrical, paired brows, paired nostrils, 6x rims with rings per side, fwd helixes both sides, tragus both sides, flat each side with question mark labs, venom

Jonathan: Weird about it all, experimental. Piercings: Antinavel (doesn’t have the anatomy for traditional), three lobes on one side, tongue, double conch (low and high, both 1.6), single vertical helix that he wears a plain titanium barbell in. all his jewellery is plain titanium, bcrs if rings but he prefers labs or curved bars for everything but his lobes.

Harley: Piercings: angel fangs w/ one black one red ball, tongue that’s wonky because she didn’t have the proper anatomy so it’s angled, smiley, double lobe and paired stacks, can’t heal cartilage for shit but has a conch and 3 rims anyway, isn’t allowed a rook even though she wants one, paired eyebrows with cones, septum (full hinged, maybe with a mandala design). all are titanium with ONLY acrylic balls and cones for the colours :). 18cm stretched lobes w/ either opal tunnels or hangers

Joker: Piercings: fucking snake eyes AND frog eyes. Snakebites with barbells instead of labrets, his teeth are FUCKED. Wonky as fuck navel, hand webs, wrist dermals, pierced his own tongue traditionally initially and didn’t have the anatomy so pierced straight through a vein but refused to take it out or go to hospital so nearly went septic. All slime green glow in the dark acrylic and cheap “bioflex” bars

Ivy: Piercings: none but visible patterned scarification on her arms and back

The first "sample" they bring her isn't a sample at all. It's a body.

A Patrat they call it, with a capital P. It's like a chipmunk, Dottie observes, carefully adjusting the animal- Pokémon around in the cabinet (thank that Pokémon god that there are biosafety cabinets here). There's still remnants of foam around its mouth, dampening its fur.

The assistant carrying the little thing in a sack did say it was. . . fresh.

Dottie sighs, fogging the face mask she wears. Forget it, there's work to be done.

Accessing brain stem is relatively simple. There's blood involved, but without a beating heart, it's not as messy. Dottie places the brain on small petri dishes, then picks the Pokémon up again.

That's. . . all she needs. This Pokémon is infected, and the virus is no doubt accumulated in the brain she's removed. But. . . it feels almost wrong, to have this little thing in her hands, practically the same as before, minus a bit of tissue.

She has to. . . burn it. Autoclave it. To kill the virus so it doesn't infect any of the staff here. Put it in a bag, and throw it away, practically.

Dottie doesn't understand Pokémon, but she's seen the horror in people's eyes. The way some clutch their little companions, companions that follow them to work even, as they try and pick out information on "will he get sick will he die will he hurt me."

And Dottie has no answers for them. Because she doesn't know. She knows animals, knows mammalian species that are hosts to the rabies virus (they call it rampage sickness here). She doesn't know if a floating magnet with an eye has the nervous system needed for the virus. Doesn't know if a plant snake carries the proper factors.

She doesn't know, and she needed to know yesterday.

Dottie numbly places the Patrat into an bag-filled pan for the autoclave, and feels like she's laying someone down to rest, to be buried, to be destroyed.

Patrat. Pat. Pat the Patrat came to the labs first, and its sacrifice is helping this place, Unova. Dottie makes a note to write that down somewhere, maybe doodle what she can remember of the little beast's face. Something to make this seem less. . . cold.

Dottie places Pat to rest, then turns to the brain.

This is going to be a long night, isolating virons and eventually mutating them to hell. But Pat died for this, so Dottie steels her nerves and gets to work.

The next sample they bring her is a Munna. Dottie names it Moon, and gets to work.
