This Week In BL - I’m pleased with what’s airing, but conflicted about what’s ended & getting started

Aug 2023 Wk 1

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Laws of Attraction (Sat iQIYI) 4 of 8 - Omg the way the bodyguard (handler?) looks at the rich kid. Gah. I see why @heretherebedork loves these 2. But I really hate him (not the handler, the kid). Fun fight scene. I love lawyer babygirl SO MUCH. HE WILL BE MY 2023 FAV CHARACTER. I’M CALLING IT. This ep, Srs? You’re killing me. Suits! Pussycat bows! And then... The Public Claiming!!!!! One of my favorite tropes! And openly flirting? Boys. I’m getting spoiled. Wait… is that…? NO SINGING. Ah well, Thai BL giveth and Thai BL taketh away.

Hidden Agenda that isn’t hidden (Sun GMMTV YouTube) ep 4 of 10 - I like the script for this. It feels like the conversations they have are very honest to a uni experience. It’s comfortable and breezy. I did not expect the kiss. Bit early in the arc. There is either going to be a lot of backend drama, or a long domestic honeymoon period. (Bet you can guess which one I vote for.)

Low Frequency (Sat iQIYI) ep 5 of 8 - It’s moving along in a Ghost Host kinda way (minus the killer chemistry). I’m not mad about it, I don’t think I'll remember it tho.

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 5 of 12 - My ambivalent relationship with this drama continues. Cohabitation trope. Punn is basically a huge puppy trying to spoil/cuddle/fuck his pretty kitty prince. It is what it is. Meanwhile, I just want more of Big Daddy & the Hot Doc. (Also the name of my burlesque show.) Why does Kevin have more chemistry with Ashi in a 1 min long scene than Punn has had… ever? Is this nascent bad boy effect or nascent 2nd lead syndrome I’m feeling? (Meanwhile Ben! Hi! Long time no see!)

Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 11 of 12 - Whatever. Trash(ish) watch here.

Dinosaur Love (Sun iQIYI) ep 6 of 8 eps - Aw pretty baby is unhappy his bf got injured. But also very blushing maiden. This is profoundly NOT GOOD.

Wedding Plan (Weds YT & iQIYI) ep 3 of 7 - I have decided that Lom’s theme song is BigBang’s Monster. Listen. You’ll see what I mean. Also BigBang = also very problematic but banging. What I’m saying is, I wanna punch Lom so bad, I went slightly bonkers. Water sports are addressed. A trash watch is happening!

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Jun & Jun (Korea Thurs Viki) 3 of 8 - How DARE they make me love this show so much? I feel personally attacked. The smell thing! Gah. The way they automatically go informal in private. The flirting. The language. The suits, the EVERYTHING. It’s embarrassing how much I rewatch the final bits of each ep.

Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) 6 of 10 eps - I adore this ridiculous show. (I just realized that the actor playing Jiang Chi played Ray’s evil 2-timing bf in About Youth). Baby boy is quite clueless. Sweet dreams tho. I love them both so much. The washing his jersey scene was so fucking cute. Couple’s numbers, couple’s keychains, bridal towel, kisses. Thank you Taiwan for NOT activating blushing maiden. However, confident gay/confused bisexual is a go. And we got us some justifiable angst. Sigh. I’m so happy.

Sing My Crush AKA Follow The Wind (Korea Weds iQIYI) 1-2 of 8 eps - supposed to have released in the first half of 2022 this is a adaption of Myung’s webtoon, from the director of My Sweet Dear, and Love Tractor’s production house, basically Korea does About Youth. It’s sweet (the singing bits are easy to skip) and very much a story of young first love but less stiff than KBL’s usual high school fare (kinda Taiwan feeling). I like it but that very imprecision in production makes me concerned for an HEA, especially with such a low MDL rating.

Tokyo in April is... AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 8fin - Rough final episode, but it does end happily. Fortunately, I had some warning for my personal triggers, but this is Japan and they did go dark. Full review below.

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) 5 of 12 eps - Shin is so cute and proud and boldly out. I love him. Movement in the relationship with both couples, even if it’s movement into arguments and misunderstanding. I suppose we got 12 eps they need to do... something.

Stay Still (Hong Kong Tues YouTube) 1 of 5 eps - It’s confusing. And… not good? Some flashbacks some present day?

Review: Tokyo in April is... AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa

I had to chew on this for a while but here’s where I ended up.

Two young men with a shared tragic past reunite and fall in love all over again, but the past will not stop hunting them. Based on a manga, this office set reunion romance is GREAT… damn it. It’s Japan in full on soft focus which means it gets emo, abusive, and chewy. These two characters are giving parts of their souls away in a desperate attempt to shape themselves to the expectations they have of each other.

Japan gave us the Bed Friends that Thailand could never even imagine. But here’s the thing: I don’t enjoy my BL this heavy and cutting. I know that for The 8th Sense crowd this is peak BL and I can’t argue with the fact that the romantic devotion, domesticity, script, and acting IS all on point. It’s just not my personal preference for that point to be so damn sharp. I appreciate that this being 2023 I have the luxury of consistent quality (especially from Japan) and thus the ability to say…

I acknowledge that this SHOULD get a 9/10 but I can’t emotionally go higher than 8/10

RECOMMENDED BUT KNOW WHAT KIND OF BL THIS IS AND TRIGGER WARNINGS LIKE CRAZY

Japan = sticking to its lanes like their BL is on rails.

8/22 Kisseki: Dear to Me formerly known as Miracle (Taiwan Tues ????) 13 eps - From screenwriter Lin Pei Yu (We Best Love, H3: Trapped) features a student doctor forced to take care of a gangster. I love the premise and like the writer, Viki or Gaga will get this one.

8/24 Man Suang (Thailand movie, domestic cinema release) - historical drama about Thai burlesque with KP’s MileApo. Tong is in this one too?

8/? Why R U? (Korean remake) is supposed to be out this month, filming started in sept 22. I find everything about this hilarious. I mean if Korea remakes it, we lose all the sexy and then... would we have a story at all? No we would not. Not even for six short eps. It’d be like one of those mesh shopping bags.

Oh yeah, Only Friends is coming.

DON’T BE SCARED

Summary: you and pierre seek comfort in each other during the red flag of suzuka 2022

Pairing: pierre gasly x reader

Warnings: none

Word Count: 561

You had accompanied Pierre to the Japanese GP, since this year you were a little freer from work and could attend more races to support him.

So you were in the garage at alpha tauri watching your boyfriend in the garage in his car ready to go racing. You had to admit that you were scared in this race. In the years that you had been dating Pierre, you had been to some races in the rain, but the Suzuka circuit in these conditions did not bring back the best memories for anyone.

The lights went out and you saw your boyfriend leave the pit lane once the rest of the cars had already left. There were several accidents at the start of the race, you saw Carlos Sainz and Sebastian Vettel crash into the barriers and you prayed that your boy did not suffer the same.

You almost gasped when you heard Pierre's radio after driving past that tractor and taking what looked like a piece of barrier. You put your hands to your mouth, your eyes already watering when you heard your boyfriend's voice talking pissed off about how he could have been killed because of that tractor.

You approached where some of the engineers were, who gave you a look mixed between pity and relaxation. You waited there knowing that with the red flag your boyfriend would have to go back to the garage to wait for the race to resume.

You sighed shakily as his car pulled into the alpha tauri garage and he got out, removing his helmet and breathing angrily. You saw him automatically go to the engineers and his team leader, complaining pissed off about the accident that could have happened and how he could have died. When he finished, he started walking directly towards you, having already seen you and almost invisibly relaxing his features as he looked at you. When he got to you he grabbed your hand and walked with you next to him to a secluded spot in the garage so you two could talk. You stood facing each other and Pierre placed his hands on your waist squeezing to try to relax. At the same time you placed your hands on his face caressing his cheeks with your thumbs trying to calm both of you when you noticed your eyes watering.

"Don't cry mon amour" Pierre said leaning his forehead on yours at the same moment he saw you about to cry.

"I was very scared. I thought you had hurt yourself” you whimpered.

“Don't be scared, amour. Everything has been left in a scare okay” Pierre calmed you down hugging you as much as he could.

You closed your eyes sighing, letting fall a few tears that Pierre kissed, following a trail until it reached your lips, where he left you a tender but passionate kiss, the two of you wanting to feel each other after the bad moment.

"I love you. Please try not to scare me like that anymore” you told him when you parted ways.

"I'll try mon amour. I love you so much, thank you for being here” Pierre spoke, the two of you calm now, although there was still talk about the accident, but you decided to let it go at that moment, preferring to enjoy being close to your boy regardless of what happened.

Day 7 of Yasammy Week: Free Day

This concept has been in my brain for a hot second and I'm so glad to finally have out in the world! Preview below and I hope you lovelies enjoy :D

The night air was cool and crisp. As Yaz walked across the parking lot, she marveled at just how nice it all was. Daytime temperatures in Michigan were already below freezing, and the first snow of the year had been just a week ago. How often did it snow here? She had heard from an uncle in Kentucky that the Southern states shut down at the slightest sign of a flurry.

The striped paint of a parking space on the pavement told her that she’d reached the front of the store. Double automatic doors framed the entrance. She wasn’t sure she felt ready to enter whatever insanity was behind them; the outside was weird enough. Dozens of ice boxes lined the wall, there was something that looked suspiciously like a fully-functioning tractor, and beyond it all was… a statue? Yeah, that was a bronze statue of something.

Yaz squinted at it; it looked like some kind of animal. If the person waving at her would just move out of the way, she might be able to figure it out.

Wait. Person waving at her?

Short bob, puffy brown jacket, cowgirl boots…

No way.

“Yaz?”

“Sammy?”

“Yaz!”

“Sammy!”

Yaz ran and ran, not caring about the dark, not caring about the cold, not caring about anything, because Sammy was there.

B5 03e14 Ship of Tears previous episode • table of contents

The news from Earth is back, but it's fully propaganda now.

I'm glad Sheridan's getting to play in the starfuries for a bit. He definitely needs some chill, fun, flying time.

Dang, it's Walter Koenig! My guy, Bester. Can't wait to see what evil shenanigans he's up to now!

He's such a good villain. So reasonable. So...off.

I don't get why the gang are still stonewalling G'Kar...it's ever more fucked up the longer they keep doing it. C'mon, be better.

I forgot about the new uniforms for a bit but I like them. Looking snazzy! I like the lines and random patch of color.

I genuinely wonder if Bester intentionally goaded her into hitting him. Glad PsiCorps are against the Shadows...it's a low bar to clear, since the Shadows are against life, but still glad.

This is a huge enemy-of-my-enemy stretch, though, considering elements within PsiCorps have been directly enemies with B5 interests themselves. Still, cooperation has got to be key against the shadows.

Wow, this is the biggest fight I've seen Delenn and John have! But seriously for the best to read G'Kar in on all the intel. He brought his intel to them! it's insulting they haven't read him in to their own intel.

Oh shit, they disclosed the existence of the Secret Ship to Bester! That's a hell of a move, as is it for Bester to just plop into the Captain's chair on the bridge. Is that a Star Trek nod? Chekov never commanded the Enterprise in any of the episodes and never sat in the chair, so Bester steals the chair for a second in B5? Cute.

I gotta pay close attention to Delenn and G'Kar's talk. Delenn's decision to obsfucate was directly because of the Grey Council's decision not to share any info. Delenn's arguing it was a good decision, because if they'd allied openly with the Narns from the beginning, the Shadows would have wiped out the Narns entirely instead of only enabling the Centauri to genocide and oppress them.

I find G'Kar's reaction a bit...odd. He talks himself around to agreeing with her, which I find a bit shameful of the writers. It cannot ever be a good thing that a people were wiped out without any foreknowledge from supposed allies. Maybe it wouldn't have changed the outcome in terms of life, but who could say what they may have done?

They have a sort of tractor beam and caught a ship, cool. Weapon's supplies, but it seems to be a person in pained stasis. Dun dun dun.

It's so wild that they took Bester into their confidence enough to take him on the White Star when they're known G'Kar all along and he still doesn't know it exists! Wild, wild set of priorities on information sharing. Bester has been a literally mortal threat to them all, G'Kar has never been a threat to any of them but Londo. And that was fair anyhow.

A shadow body? Or a different species that's allied? I thought the shadows were multi-limbed, spindly things.

Not just one person in a tube, but over a hundred! Ivanova called them sleeper tubes, but Dr Franklin calls them cryotubes.

They have impants on either side of their cerebral cortexes, the lady they were waking up slowly came to screaming and asking why they were doing this. Bester identifies her as "a blip," a telepath who refused to take suppressants or join the corps. This lady is P-11 or P-12.

And she has a terrible nightmare/flashback to what looks to be three individuals, the same species as the unidentified body they found earlier. Leaning towards species allied with the shadows.

P-12 lady made herself a nest of wires? And first thing she tries to do is lure Bester in and attack him. Good instincts, lol. And she's in pain, she says. Bester claims she has no reason attack him or sabotage the station by ripping out all the wires, and she automatically shoots at Bester's PsiCorps broach.

Her name is Carolyn - I guess the shadows already got their hands on her and into her brain? Well that's harrowing. idk what her shared telepathy with Bester was about, even with Bester's explanation. He met her when she was caught and sent to the re-education center, and immediately fell in love with her. Tried to make her experience in the center better...I guess? Bigger quarters and more food. Yikes. And then he knocked her up. No mention of if she had anything to say about that?? jesus.

Hm, Shadows use people as processing for their ships? They are acting like they've talked about it before, but it's new info to me, and horrifying info at that.

Bester says his promise to keep her and their baby safe is the only promise he's ever made that he meant a damn. And that if they can help her, he's 100% on Sheridan's side. Handy! If they can pull it off and get those next level impants out of her or something.

Ivanova says he'll turn on them the second it's all over and I'm inclined to believe her. Maybe he'd play nicer for longer if he achieved some of his goals for telepaths - they are the future, he says.

Did Garibaldi finally teach himself enough Narn to read some of G'Kar's book? Good for him.

The Shadows are weak to telepaths, hence probably the 100+ telepaths being made into ship components. And this info is so timely, because the Shadows are attacking a place right now! Telepaths! We ride at space dawn!

Eddie needed to get out of the city, like far out of the city. His dad had been taken in for multiple grand theft auto charges and he didn't want to be pinned for the few times he's helped him if his dad decides to save his own ass. Which is why he finds himself in a small town of mainly farms called Hawkins. Nowhere close to his dad and his bullshit.

He'd discovered a the small town hall a collection of job postings, one of the farms was offering food and board for a farmhand which suited Eddie perfectly since he only had a few bucks to his name, not enough for a room at the inn.

The Harrington farm was on the edge of town, not secluded but still private. It had been a bit of a bitch to walk all the way there but the air was fresher here and made Eddie feel lighter. He knocked on the front door of the farmstead, holding the notice nervously.

"Can I help you?"

Eddie spins around and is met with the most beautiful man he's ever seen, looking rough and sweaty in his work clothes.

"I-Um, I saw the notice in the town hall, I'm new in town and was hoping for some work?"

The man smiles, "Oh! Great, was hoping someone would reply, didn't expect a city boy like yourself, but beggars can't be choosers. I'm Steve, Steve Harrington." Steve holds out his hand.

Eddie smiles back and shakes Steve's hand, "Eddie, Eddie Munson." Eddie hoped that his family's reputation didn't reach this far. Since Steve's smile didn't waver he felt safe.

Steve showed Eddie around the farm, Steve mainly had orchards so Eddie would be helping trim the trees, weeding and harvesting the fruit. His room was small but better than he expected and over dinner that night Eddie found that Steve was a great cook.

Eddie thought that the jobs didn't sound that hard, he quickly discovered he was wrong. It started with the wake up call at barely dawn. Steve who had gotten up even earlier to make breakfast laughed and called him a city boy again when Eddie grumbled out of bed and got into the work clothes Steve had given him.

Eddie had only driven an automatic before and so Steve had told him he'd have to teach him how to drive the tractor another day. The tasks of the day sounded simple, they had to trim the newer apple trees so that they would grow correctly for next year's season and harvest the peach trees.

Turns out Eddie isn't as strong as he thinks he is, the smaller branches are fine but the ones Steve has marked that are a bit thicker take both of his hands to slice with the cutters and he slips, cutting his palm. Steve his quick to reassure him and wrap his hand, telling him that when he was younger he got all kinds of scraps and bruises until he got strong enough for the work. Eddie feels better knowing that Steve isn't going to get rid of him straight away.

The peach harvesting goes much better, at least at first. Steve shows him how to tell which peaches are ready and gives him a step ladder to reach the higher ones. Eddie learns more about Steve as they pass conversation between them moving down the rows. He learns that Steve moved to Hawkins to escape his dad who wanted Steve to become a lawyer like him, Steve didn't want that at all so took all of his trust fund and bought the farm. Eddie almost brought up his own dad then, but didn't want to lose his job so soon.

They'd almost finished when Eddie had tripped with his basket coming down from the step ladder and spilled all of the peaches. "Shit, I'm so sorry," Eddie says scrambling to pick them all back up. "Hey, hey Eddie it's alright, accidents happen, no worry," Steve laughs, laughing softly and bending to help him. "You've been so nice to me, Steve, I just want to do right by you and do a good job." Steve smiles, "You're doing great, Eddie, I promise."

By the time the work day is done Eddie is exhausted, but he insists on helping Steve make dinner, Steve shows him how to make peach cobbler for their dessert and a treat for his first day. Over dinner Eddie comes clean about why he's in Hawkins, not wanting to lie to Steve.

"I don't care about who you were before, Eddie, you're not your dad in the same way I'm not mine. I still want you here."

Months pass and the two men become closer. Eddie gets stronger and learns how to drive a manual. One night Eddie surprises Steve with apple pie, a recipe he learnt from his grandmother when he was young, and Steve kisses him.

Two men once defined by their name become something better together in the fresh air, far away from the city.

As soon as they were near Caracas, she remembered it all. She remembered the way. Gabby had only been there once, but she remembered the way back to the farm. They couldn’t think of a reason not to let her lead. Even if she was a speed demon.

They found themselves at some big metal gates and an impossibly long dirt road.

When Gabby said that they were going to a farm. Santiago pictured something small, a shack made of spare bits of wood and corrugated iron. Not a homestead with a wraparound porch and fields as far as the eyes could see.

A man in his late fifties walked out the front door and down the front steps as they pulled up. He had dark hair and he was rounder then Santiago had imagined. Not the type that he would have pictured she would fall for.

The guy he was guessing was Sebastian, he shook Frankie’s hand and gestured inside before Frankie nodded his head as Santiago got closer, he heard Sebastian ask

“Where is she?”

She walked out from behind the van. Gabby walked over to him slowly before softly wrapping her arms around Sebastian waist and resting her head on his chest. He brushed down her hair. Running his hand over her head and down her neck. Treating her like she was the most delicate thing in the world.

Gabby got lost in him for a few seconds before getting ripped back out by Sebastian picking her up off the ground. She automatically wrapped her legs around his waist, burying her face in his neck.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly

"I am now"

Their voices were muffled by each other's bodies and quiet. Santiago walked her a little away from the group

"What's the story?"

He sat her on top of a wooden fence where she had sat many times before.

"You don’t have to do this"

"It's okay. You asked for help. You never ask for help"

"You don’t have to help just because I asked” she shook her head “It's Rojas"

"You and I have faced worse people"

"If he finds you"

"Honey" he soothed as he held her head in his hands. Fingers intertwined in her hair "He's not going to find me. We'll put the money in the cellar under the old barn. I'm going to put the antique tractor over the top of the trap door. No one will ever know there's a cellar there"

"That's actually really smart"

"It's what Tio Felix used to do with the coca decades ago"

"Sebastian, I’m scared"

He kissed her forehead

“Well, the bad news is that it’s not over yet. Come on” he took her hand and gently pulled her over to the group.

She introduced everyone to Sebastian.

It was all very caveman, with the grunts, the nods and the handshakes.

If this wasn’t so serious, she would have laughed.

They all stood there on the porch trying to escape the sun for as long as they could.Gabby and Sebastian held hands, her other hand wrapped around his wrist . She stood a little closer to him, without realising that she stepped closer

“What’s going on?” she asked quietly

“I made a few calls, sent some feelers out. Rojas has every port and airfield coming into the US on watch. He has people everywhere”

“Which means he has people scattered on the roads out of here” she said

“You’ve already have us covered because of the zillions of coffee beans we stole” Will nodded his head at her “We’re got this”

“Let’s move this stuff before the sun goes down” Sebastian suggested “Do you remember your way to the barn?”

“I do remember the barn” she smirked suggestively at him “I remember that barn very well. Thank you very much”

She was keeping it light, flirtatious, carefree but he knew the weight of this thing was on her chest. Her breathing was shallow, she was rubbing her neck, she was jittery. Gabby was freaking out and all Sebastian wanted to do was take it all away.

She showed them the way before finding the antique tractor was already outside in the sun. There was something about seeing a tractor being towed by another tractor that was funny to Gabby but she explained it away was delirium.

The cellar door was open, and she walked down the stairs before even thinking about it. The room was dark and cool. It was calming. The space was huge.

“Luna?” Sebastian called out “Watch out for spiders”

She suddenly shot up the stairs like her hair was on fire

It was the first time that she had been girly this whole time. She brushed her hair and arms as if she was covered in spiders, just the thought was freaking her out.

She walked out of the barn and straight to the house where there were no spiders. Where she knew where everything was.

As much as he hated the fact that they were there. Santiago knew they were somewhere safe. They had actual beds, more food than they needed and time to build up their energy, which they were going to need later on.

He just didn’t like new people.

Sure, Gabby trusted Sebastian but no one else even knew him.

He even had a space to store the money that was unseen.

That alone was enough to have Santiago concerned but it wasn’t just that.

It was the wordless conversations being had and none of them Santiago understood.

He hated being out of the loop.

The guy was even cooking everyone dinner.

Who was this guy? Was he going for sainthood?

It was the mischievous glance between Sebastian and Gabby. It was the history. He felt like he was choking on the history

He just didn’t understand why this guy was under his skin so bad. Why Gabby was grating on him since they pulled up the dirt driveway.

They were close, they were always touching. He had never seen her with anyone like that, not even Frankie.

She was delicate and soft. It was in total contrast to how she was with Santiago. He didn’t mean to take it personally, but it was staring him right in the freakin’ face

It was weird.

After dinner Gabby was clearing the table as everyone else was laughing and having a good time. Sebastian wrapped his arm around her waist, stopping her and dragging Gabby down to his lap

“As much as I hate to admit it” he sighed “I’m thinking you might need to call Gunner”

“No” Frankie protested softly “That’s not going to be cheap”

Santiago frowned confused. Since when had Frankie been materialistic about money.

“He has big planes and we need big planes. Whether it be from here or somewhere else”

“Where to, after that?” Will questioned “If Rojas has every port and airport into the states dialled in”

“Would the army have a base with an airfield or whatever?”

“That would be the Navy” Santiago answered dryly

“Same thing”

“It’s not”

“Military base, whatever” she said annoyed “The Navy has planes?”

“I feel the need” Sebastian told her

“They weren’t air force?”

“Navy”

“Is there any abandoned navy bases with an airfield in Canada?”

“Not abandoned” Frankie told her gently. Her mind was working overtime and she was running on fumes. She was covering it well, but Frankie saw it

“Anyone have connections in Canada?”

“Why Canada?”

“She has a cabin up there” Sebastian answered

“We can siphon the money back into the states slowly that way. Not unless you guys are in a hurry or have any trips to Australia on the cards?” she teased

“I think I’m going to go to bed” Santiago told the table smirking at her as he stood up from the table

“I could have someone that could help us” Will told him “But he is in Alaska”

“Could be far enough away from Rojas to work”

Gabby and Sebastian shared a look before Sebastian nodded his head

“This plan is writing itself, Luna”

“I’ll call Gunner tomorrow” she sighed “Do you have any scales big enough to weight the pay load”

“Big enough to weight cows”

“I can work with that” Frankie answered

“Thank god you are a pilot, Frank”

“I’m still concerned about Gunner”

“I can handle Gunner”

This time it was Frankie and Sebastian who exchanged a look. The guy wasn’t going to want money, no matter what they offered him. He was going to want the thing he had wanted for years and openly so.

He was going to want Gabby.

It was the one thing that he would never have.

She wouldn’t agree to giving him what he wanted. Not even to get them back to the states but Frankie did have a mind to throw Gunner to Rojas, if it come to that.

The world wouldn’t miss him.

Santiago heard Gabby on the staircase around midnight. The house was dark but she had yet to go to bed. The stairs creaked as she was got to the top

“Bear?” she whispered

He heard her gasped before she giggled. He had no doubt that Sebastian was ‘Bear’ and there was also no doubt that Gabby had just been carried off to bed.

Santiago would have rolled his eyes if they weren’t already closed.

He couldn’t sleep

It was the damn bed he was in.

It was too soft.

The air was too hot and the sheets had wrapped around him in such a way that he felt like they were trying to kill him.

Santiago didn’t like the unknown and right now. It was nothing but unknown.

It the first time he had heard the name Gunner and since when did Gabby own anything, let alone a cabin in Canada.

This was getting ridiculous.

He sighed as he tossed his arm above his head.

No wonder he couldn’t sleep.

This whole thing was a mess.

K so time to write my superfam angst fic with:

Ma and Pa Kent, aka the only two braincells in this mess. Clark Kent, who would really like to get this god damned tractor fixed, but has to learn to deal with seven kids. He only planned for two. Lois Lane, who suddenly went from being mother of two to mother of seven. She only gave birth to one. Kara Zor El, long suffering and sick of her cousin’s bullshit, but someone has to teach these kids about Krypton and Clark sure as hell isn’t. Karen Starr, deciding to try and integrate with her alternate-universe cousin’s family a bit more. It would be easier if she knew how children worked. Kon El Kent, who did not sign up to be the eldest of seven children or the responsible one here. Mia Kent, who recently got away from Brainiac, coming to the realization maybe she’s not the most well adjusted. Laney Kent, who’s automatic reaction to everything is still “BRUTAL MURDER!!”. His friendship with Duke is not helpful. Chris Kent, currently getting used to the idea of the people he lives with giving a shit about him. Jon Kent, recovering from being held captive and traumatized by an evil version of his dad for a year. Also, he’s twelve. Otho-Ra and Osul-Ra, eight years old and fully ready to become the family menaces.

Eurovision 2023: 38 songs, first impressions

Wake up, bitches, it’s Eurovision time… AGAIN!

There’s only one word I can use to describe my first listening of the year of those 38 songs and it’s “surprising”. I was surprised. In more ways than one.

So let’s not waste any more time and let’s talk about these songs.

As per every year, obligatory disclaimer: I have listened to these songs just once, so do not take my words as my final decision. I can still change my mind, after listening to them more times. But for now, here are my thoughts.

ITALY

I know half of Italy will kill me and the other half will tell me I understand nothing, but I don’t particularly like Mengoni. He’s not a bad singer, he has a good voice and the song isn’t bad either. It’s just... okay. Maybe the chorus could’ve been more powerful. Maybe he could’ve written something different than another love song. I just don’t particularly vibe with it.

Vote: just okay

LATVIA

Well, since he asked so kindly, I won’t wake up and I’ll keep sleeping during this boring song.

UNITED KINGDOM

Here’s the first surprise of this year. The UK sent a great song: not just a good one, not just an okay one. A great one. And I love it! It has a lot of 90s dance vibes, but only the best ones and I approve.

Also, I love that this song is a revenge. Why feel bad or make a scene, when you can expose your cheating boyfriend through a song everyone can listen/dance to? Way to go, queen.

Vote: Revenge is best served in the UK

SLOVENIA

Last year’s song was a snoozefest, this year is way better. I still forgot it after my first listening and it’s not in my top 10 either, but at least I can listen to it more than once without falling asleep.

Also, extra points for singing again in their native language. Great job, Slovenia, you deserve points just for that.

Vote: singing in your language should automatically give you access to the finals. That’s the rule, I decided it

ICELAND

That’s not a bad song, but it’s something already listened to. I mean, at first I thought it was Sweden’s entry, because of how generic it sounded.

At least it’s better than last year.

Vote: I miss the BDSM club from two years ago

CROATIA

A sudden vibe. Mentions of mothers and tractors. Armageddon-granny. Morons. I glanced at the video and saw a Stalin-looking guy. Funny weirdos dancing. The fricking alphabet. The war. And then, the line: “That little psychopath”. And I was like: wait, is this a parody of Stalin?

And then, I started laughing.

It was pretty clear that there’s more than meets the eye in this song. So I searched for the meaning and found an interesting article on the Eurovision website, in which the band explained just a few details - like the tractor line: it is actually a reference to Belarus and Russia’s relationship (read it, it’s quite interesting).

I know some stupid people (read: the jury) won’t appreciate this song and that’s a shame because it deserves love. It follows the “Keep the Eurovision weird” memo, it has funny people, biting satire and all the vibes. What else do you need?

Vote: top 5 because I Say So

PORTUGAL

Please remember that, when I listen to these songs the first time, I put the playlist on and do my chores while listening. So when I listened to this one, I thought it was very interesting and what a nice rhythm! That’s definitely an east European country. But which one?

And then, to my utter surprise, I checked the video title and saw it was Portugal’s entry.

I’ve always hated everything Portugal sent, because if it wasn’t bad, it was the most boring thing known to mankind.

But this year, a miracle happened. They finally (FINALLY!) sent a good song. A song with a rhythm and their own language.

I am baffled. What happened in Portugal? Did they wake up from a dream? Did everyone just regain their hearing? Did someone teach them what “rhythm” is?

Vote: A Christmas miracle in May! A Christmas miracle!

MALTA

The sax got my attention, the rhythm kept me around.

Good job, Malta boy.

Vote: Maltese people are sorcerers because they always bring a good song.

ROMANIA

Just to give you an idea of how forgettable is this song: when I finished listening to all 38 songs, I forgot it even existed. And I didn’t even realize it was Romania’s entry, until I checked again to write this post.

Vote: I miss the vampires

POLAND

It’s not a bad song. It has a good rhythm, but it’s not this incredible. It’s just... okay?

I know I said this before, but this song also sounds like something I listened to before, so it’s only fitting.

Vote: I thought it was a bad entry from Spain. It ended up being a mediocre one from Poland

SAN MARINO

That’s very kind of San Marino to bring something that will go to the bottom of the chart.

Vote: Someone should occupy those positions, after all

AUSTRIA

A song about Edgar Allan Poe: this alone deserves top 5.

But if that’s not enough for you, the lyric is also a satire of the music industry and the rhythm is just too catchy to ignore it. Everyone should appreciate it.

Vote: Top 5 now

AUSTRALIA

The song was bringing me joy, then the screamo moment gave me even more joy.

Great singer, great rhythm, great band, great everything. After some weak years, Australia brought back a great song and I’m in love once again.

Vote: the most European country of all shows us why we made a good choice inviting it to our party

SERBIA

This is the second song about sleeping but while the first one made me want to go to bed, this one got my attention.

Also, it’s probably a reference to the current political situation - so the feeling is much more understandable.

In addition to that, the song has a perfect mix of creepiness, awareness and weirdness. And the lyric isn’t entirely in English either, which is always appreciated.

Vote: What did I say before? Native language -> instant finals. And this one is weird and interesting, so it deserves a good position too

CZECH REPUBLIC

My sister won't stand in the corner Nor will she listen to you

I think these first two lines are enough to explain this song, its meaning and why it was blocked in Russia and Belarus 4 hours after the premiere.

If it’s not enough, consider that this song isn’t just in Czech, but in FOUR languages. It has parts in Ukrainian, Bulgarian and English too. It’s a literal Slavic hymn to the Slavic family.

And if it’s still not enough, then there’s also a great rhythm that will instantly get your attention.

This song doesn’t deserve the top because I say it, but because it’s a magnificent love letter to a Slavic country from its sister and a powerful scream against war.

Vote: This should be the winner. Period

ISRAEL

The first mention of a unicorn made me think maybe I heard it wrong. The second mention left me puzzled.

And in the end, she didn’t even end up with a unicorn horn on her forehead. I’m disappointed.

Vote: I miss Czech already

SWEDEN

As said before, when I listen to these songs for the first time, I don’t check the name or the country: I just put the playlist on. So when I listened to this one, I thought: “man, this is bad. The poor singer can’t even spell the words or reach her notes”.

Then I glanced at the video, read the name and found out it was Loreen.

I know half of the world will probably kill me, but I don’t like Loreen. I don’t think she’s this good. I’d much rather listen to a singer who can spell words and not mumble them for three minutes. She has good vocals, fine, but the words - or even the letters are non-existent. I have to read subtitles to understand what she’s trying to say. And she’s talking in English, not in some weird language.

But even if she spoke in another language… how’s that possible I can’t understand A SINGLE LETTER? I can understand letters in languages I don’t know, why she’s the only one I can’t understand? What, I’m deaf only to her? Or she’s the one who’s not able to properly spell words?

And before any of you says anything: I know she did the same during Euphoria, but at least I could get some words during the chorus. This time? I literally have no idea what she said. I can’t even tell you a single letter. Not a word, a LETTER. To me, she sounds drunk. Or like a person who doesn’t know English and is trying to repeat the words of an English song, without knowing them.

The world loves her and she will probably get a high position in the final chart because her and because Sweden is everyone’s favourite even when it brings trash. But if someone from another country brought this, they would never go past the semifinals. Just saying.

Vote: stop mumbling, sis, I can’t understand a single thing

FRANCE

Great song, again! Amazing rhythm, lyrics in French (as they should rightfully be), and a singer with a lot of style. It deserves a good place and lots of love.

THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands did a miracle last year and brought a wonderful song in their own language. This year they forgot everything they learned and brought a generic ballad in English.

ARMENIA

She wrote a song for her future lover. And maybe it’s her voice, maybe it’s the softness of the chorus, but I like the soft, innocent vibes it gives me.

Not my personal favorite, but it’s a heartwarming song with a nice rhythm and I don’t feel like making too much fun of it.

Vote: we can have a soft song, once in a while. As a treat

FINLAND

Thank goddess, one of the Nordics got the memo to sing in their language and Finland delivered it with a great song!

The rhythm is on point, it makes you want to dance and the lyric is in Finnish, which makes me very happy, because I don’t remember having listened to it before.

Vote: what a pleasant surprise!

SPAIN

The title itself is a noise, the song contributed to it.

It gave me a headache and it’s a shame because the rhythm is good, it’s in Spanish and it could’ve been way more enjoyable with fewer vocals.

GEORGIA

I had the biggest deja-vu while listening to this song because it sounds like something I’ve already listened but I don’t remember exactly when.

I just remember it sounded better from start to end and not only during the chorus.

LITHUANIA

Thank you, Lithuania, for bringing your language once again. I truly appreciate it - even if it’s mixed with English.

If you bring a good song too next time, I would be even more grateful.

UKRAINE

When I listened to it, I thought it was Sweden. And then, to my utter surprise, it was Ukraine.

The guy is a good singer. And I checked the lyric too: pretty good, message loud and clear.

But that’s not the Ukrainian rhythm. It has nothing of Ukraine, except for a few lines. And I know they probably wanted something different, but this… this is too bland and generic. This is forgettable, while the previous years have been amazing.

I don’t know, maybe they didn’t want to win again, but just to deliver a powerful message?

Vote: it could’ve been way WAY better, considering it’s coming from Ukraine

SWITZERLAND

Last year, Switzerland brought a song that was more of a torture, rather than a song. This year, they learned from their mistakes and gave us something amazing.

The singer is young, but he has a mature voice and a powerful message. The lyric is perfect in its simplicity. And the rhythm isn’t bad either.

Vote: good job, Switzerland! A couple of years like this and I may forgive you for that torture you brought last year

AZERBAIJAN

And there it is, my second deja-vu. I am sure I already listened to this song once, the rhythm is just too familiar.

Vote: Not cool, Azerbaijan. Not cool.

GREECE

Greece should be banished from Eurovision, until they learn they should bring the Greek language and Balkan rhythm back. Until that moment, they don’t deserve anything, especially if they deliver this boring ball of nothing.

Vote: at least this guy seems Greek, unlike the Nordic girl from last year

CYPRUS

It’s another English song and it has nothing of the Balkan rhythm. AND YET, it’s better than the Greek one.

Vote: it’s still possible to write a good song if you try. And at least Cyprus is trying

ALBANIA

It’s very... Albanian. And not in a bad way! The rhythm, the lyric, everything screams Albania and it does it in a way that makes this song interesting and worth listening to more times.

Vote: maybe not my favorite, but definitely more interesting than Greece and Cyprus

BELGIUM

90s vibes again. And, once again, the best ones only.

Vote: Belgium always makes something worth the finals

GERMANY

Germany finally realized what Eurovision is about: blood and glitter. And rock. And fire. And weirdness. And a surprisingly wholesome song.

I am in love with everything.

Vote: Germany is finally learning and I am proud of them

IRELAND

Man-Curtain left Australia to reach Ireland and brought a song much more interesting compared to last year’s.

Vote: Ireland and Belgium, they always have an interesting entry

MOLDOVA

And here to the left, you can see two of Eurovision’s most beloved traditions: Moldova bringing something weird/good and a song about a rave in the forest.

Moldova delivered hard and this song is immediately top 3. The rave, the vibes, the rhythm, the flute, accompanied by a good-looking guy and stunning women: everything is on point.

Vote: Moldova always understands the assignment

NORWAY

Two months ago I was on the internet, minding my own business, when I saw an AMV with a great song. I immediately fell in love and put it in my personal playlist. It was interesting and with great vibes how could I ignore it?

Now imagine my surprise when this song started and hey, the first notes sound familiar. Then the singer drops the first “she” and I immediately jumped up and said: “Wait, is this Queen of Kings?!”

So… do I like it? Heck, I liked this song even before knowing it was Norway’s entry, of course I like it! It’s one of my favorites! And yes, I still love it.

Vote: my opinion might change about the other songs, but be sure it won’t change about this one

DENMARK

This guy is apparently a Tiktoker and this explains why the lyric sounds so perfect for that app and so bland in general.

It doesn’t explain why he looks so bored, tho.

ESTONIA

She has a great voice. But hey, some years ago Estonia sent a female soprano singer, so I suppose that great female voices are a must for them.

Also, the song is very nice, the rhythm is good and the message is good too. I would like to see it in the finals.
