Also announced today, Illarys! I’ll be drawing a fantasy one shot for the Jump Tales anthology! The story is about Illarys, a young half-elf girl who must fight against the elements and her pursuers in order to deliver herself and her little brother to safety. They are on the run from their despotic home kingdom and it will take all of her untested skills to keep her and her brother alive!
I’m excited to draw this one, I think everyone has seen that I’ve been going nuts with fantasy stuff lately, and this will be my first real foray into telling a fantasy story (not counting Rare Drops). This one will be fun for anyone who likes Elder Scrolls or Dungeons and Dragons, which are my biggest influences, in addition to the novels and other things I’ve been digesting lately. I’ll share more on this one when it’s available, but for now, I hope you enjoy this small glimpse of a new work!
This was drawn in my Stillman & Birn Gamma sketchbook, and the toned and colored in Photoshop. The final comic will be black & white, I colored it because I wanted to give it a go!

World Building Challenge Week
Technology Tuesday - Technology in Artemia
The world of When the Light Dies is in a place of transition between the new and the old. Much of the continent of Artemia is in the midst of its industrial revolution. Factories dot the countryside, producing weapons, vehicles, and pollution in spades. Electricity, once reserved for the sun lamps that protect each city, and then the nobility, is now widely available to all within city limits. Still, many cling to the old way of things, wary of the rapid evolution of technology.
With the advancement of technology, Ghent finds itself in a difficult position. Once the center of power on the continent, it finds the playing field evened for its opponents with the invention of the belt-fed machine gun, as well as their massacre of the Allcasters who had been the driving force behind their expansion to begin with.
Still, with superior numbers and discipline, Ghent does not go down easily against the countries of Adra and Mydinia, and much of the land is now scarred with trenches and mass graves from their slogging fight.
Gas masks are a common sight throughout Ghent, both on the field of battle and off. Many members of The Guard wear masks while on duty, as they help prevent possession from demons, although it is not completely guaranteed.
In the fight against demons, three pieces of technology have been key. The first are the sun lamps, lights that glow as bright as the sun, and are scattered throughout the large cities of Ghent to keep the demons at bay. In areas such as Hilltop, where the nobility live, the sun lamps are so abundant that the people have never experienced true night, and many have lost their night vision as a result.
The second are swords that are assigned to every member of The Guard. They are made of an element called “Godsteel,” a formidable metal that never dulls and cannot be manipulated by even the most powerful of Allcasters. Godsteel burns a demon as well as the sun, and is perfect for close combat when a pistol is not on hand.
The third invention is what are simply referred to as “Light Bullets.” These are special rounds that, upon contact, shatter and produce a quick burst of light. Demonic executions are often performed with multiple light bullets.
