AVALANCE AU

AU: Sara is attending CU Boulder, she plays soccer and lives with her teammate Zari and childhood best friend Ray. Ray’s best friend with Nate but Nate is in a frat. Charlie is on the team and has a massive crush on Zari who has a massive crush on Nate. Ava attends CU Boulder as well, she plays basketball, she’s lives with her best friend Nora. Gary is friends and is in the same frat as Nate, has a massive crush on Ava but will soon have a sexual awakening.

Part 9/? The Game I Was Talking About The Game

“You’ve got to admit she’s really good,” Charlie tries to make conversation as the game finishes. Boulder wins their first scrimmage which Ava loves because she’s as competitive as they come. 

“Right Sara?” Zari looks at Sara who is still sitting down in a bit of shock. A shock that for once she is actually enjoying basketball game and that nobody else has gotten her attention but Ava. 

“Yeah, c’mon we’ve got a party to go to.” Sara gets up from the chair and starts to head for the exit. 

“Wait why dont we go say hi?” Zari pulls Sara back and heads towards a welcoming Nora and a nervous Gary “Hey guys,” Charlie awkwardly greets digging her hands down deep into her pockets

“Hey guys glad you could make it, what’d you think?” Nora smiles knowing that Ava will soon come out from the locker room 

“It was good, they’ve got a lot of fans don't they?” Zari jokes 

“Yeah actually, its crazy how much people love basketball--Ava hey!” Nora smiles and waves Sara immediately stiffens.

“Hey guys, Z, Charlie---Hi Sara.” Ava fixes her hair and joins the group circle 

“So basically, when people say ball is life--you actually meant it” Zari puts her hand up for a high-five. Ava chuckles and nods, “You could say that” she adds 

“Alright good game, Nora I was wondering if I could pick your brain about that one class we’ve got all together.” Zari lies and everyone seems to catch up on what she is hinting at 

“Of course, we’ll meet you guys outside” Nora smirks, Z and Charlie wink and Gary fan girls not so subtly 

“That felt like a set up” Ava chuckles as they start walking to where there friends 

“You’re telling me, when we’re you going to mention that you were the star player? Let alone have two awards for being the athlete of the month by gatorade?” Sara makes conversation hoping that Ava finally takes her bait 

“When we’re you going to tell me? I saw the big banner of you, Charlie, Zari and  2 other people but I saw you Sara. You were right in the middle.”

“Oh is that so? Because last time I check I wasn’t nominated nor did I win an award.” 

“We’re doing this? Fine I'm going to look you up right now-” Ava pulls out her phone and types in Sara’s name  “L A N C E right?” 

“Wai--wait a minute.” Sara tries to take her phone away by reaching over to Ava. But Ava simply pushes herself up against Sara while creating some distance between Sara and the arm with her phone in it. The girls chuckle for a while and Sara had the urge to kiss Ava but shakes her head. 

“You won't find much.” Sara pulls away and puts her hand in her pockets

“Funny because-” Ava clears her throat to recover from the moment they shared “-It says you were the first freshman to be voted as captain, every summer since college you’ve trained with the US national women's team. What’s that about Lance?”

“I--look its not that big of a deal. I’m just happy we’re finally having a conversation.” Sara smiles knowing how she missed her and Ava’s playful banter even though they’d only known each other for a week

“Are you telling me you missed me?” 

“ You are good. You are so good--the game---I was talking about the game.” Sara stutters trying to recover knowing that she wasn't talking about sex. 

“I think you’ve already mentioned that but thanks, thank you for coming to my scrimmage.”

“I actually enjoyed myself-”

“Why do you sound shock?”

“I don’t know, I love sports and all but I never clicked with basketball”

“Did I sway you?”

“Not you personally but the game was definitely good.”

“Ah--alright what are you doing right now?” 

“Heading--to--why?”

“Well seeing that you took me to a party, its only fair you come to one of mine. Right guys?” Ava turns to their friends seeing that they’ve finally caught up

“Right about what?” Gary wonders 

“They should come to a party with us since we went to a party with them last weekend.”

“Yes! We’re going to Kappa Sigma” Sara stops in her tracks hearing that familiar frat house 

“Wait why there?” Sara wonders

“Some of the girls on the team are “dating” some of the brothers. So are you down?” Ava looks at Sara who seems a bit unsure but surprisingly replies with a nod.

“Great I’ll see you in an hour. C’mon guys.” Ava waves goodbye and the two follow them 

“What was that all about? You were so confident and honestly hot.” Gary rambles earning weird looks from the two girls 

“You just had to make it weird didn't you?” Ava jokes ignoring what Gary said

This just got updated the other week and ruined multiple nights of sleep for me. At almost 350k words, still going, I don’t know how to explain without spoiling stuff that happens a long way in. There are so many layers to both Ava and Sara here, and the trauma, and the issues, and the fact they will not talk to each other about anything. I jumped on this a bit late, as the title and description didn’t grab me, but oh boy, I was missing out. I did get to read a heap of it in one go, but that doesn’t help the slow burn. I would start this even though it’s still a WIP, just because it will take you a while, to read, and also the storylines need time to settle in, because they are heavy, but just amazing. It is now the longest Avalance fic with the latest update.

This fic had me crying in the lunchroom during my second week of work because I couldn’t not read during my lunch break, and it was hitting me so hard. That was after starting it at 10pm, reading to 2am, sleeping until 6am, reading until 11am a couple of days before. Warning for major character deaths; the funeral for one is alluded to in the description. If anyone says something bad about Jordan, I will not be happy; one of the best original characters I have ever read in a fic. Sara’s not in a great place initially, but she gets there. And there’s some cute flashbacks to college Legends too.

I just looked at the word count for this, and it must be the first time I have, because wow! It is a journey! There’s a couple of prequel, sequel and interjection stories in this universe too. Ava has to deal with her family not being super supportive when she comes out. Sara has to deal with Laurel struggling and their mum having a clear favourite (Laurel). Most of the Legends have really great arcs in here as well. Ava’s family is great. I wanna hang out with her little sister. Don’t be like 2018 me who gives up after the first chapter because they are mad about what Laurel is going through. She’s fine, and there’s a heap of great Sara and Laurel moments. I recently re-read the last 10 chapters, and I still couldn’t stop myself from reading like it was the first time.

I hate the movie this fic is based on. The movie’s fine, and it was a delight seeing Tatiana Maslany in it while I was watching Orphan Black, but basically it is my worst-case scenario, losing my memory. The fact that this fic kept me hooked despite that, is a testament to the quality. The fic itself says “light angst”, I say it’s much, much heavier than that, but that’s just me. Warning, there are some intense twists in here, and everyone is a bit OOC to me, memory loss being considered, which might not be your thing.

In general, as I’ve mentioned before, I don’t like kid fics. Fics with future children coming back to meet their parents, or the couple going into the future? Some of my favourites ever. This has no time travel, but I trust Lucy. This story is under 75k, but the sequel is almost as long, so combined they’re over. The sequel is a WIP. I didn’t watch Once Upon a Time, but it’s the plot of the start of that, except the gay actually happens. There are a lot of issues our girls have to work through here, but the kid is so cute.

I’m sure this format of storytelling is not for everyone, and that’s okay! I was so confused by it at first. I would recommend starting with the shorter one, I can be your hero (in Part 2), just to see if you like it, before jumping into this. I read this when the epilogue, the fic, was released, and I was up until 5am because I couldn’t stop. It became part of my personality. Story wise, Sara and Ava are on different coasts, but both know Nate, Ray and Nora. Ray and Nora get engaged, and Avalance have to deal with planning that wedding, and whatever is going on with them.

I re-read this every year when the new Australian season comes out. It’s so burned into my brain that when I was watching the speed climbing at the Olympics I genuinely thought “I wonder how Amaya would go in this?”. Amaya’s pre-Ninja experience is rock climbing in this fic. I learnt so much about Ninja Warrior and how the show (at least in this universe) works, and it’s fascinating. Would recommend watching some clips if you’re unfamiliar with the concept. The story goes pretty in detail about the courses. For recommendations, either Jessie Gaff, who was a S1 Supergirl stuntwoman, or Australia’s own Olivia Vivian, who is just stages better than our next female.

Do you ever 100% have those days when you believe supercorp is in fact canon in all the ways compared to the het tropes? But there’s the thorn on your side that’s “waiting” on everybody behind the show to “confirm” what we’ve been saying and preaching for years now? And if it highkey comes down to the show pulling a catradora on us with supercorp I’ll be totally fine with it because I’ll just take that as a big fat “I told you so” to the haters. Analysis GO OFF 😚

Dude, you have no idea how many little break downs I have every once in a while because I just feel so confident that Supercorp will happen! Everything in the Supercorp-specific writing, music, cinematic tropes, actress choices, etc. has shown that Kara and Lena will and should be canon. Look, I’m in graduate school for psychology and I haven’t taken a film class in my life. I’ve never even been a big “shipping” person. But I watched Supergirl live all throughout undergrad, often with my straight friends (who were less into the show) and even they noticed all the things that we "delusional" fans discuss.

Iconic Superhero/Love interest tropes

The Hero having to choose between saving their LI or kids/city/world, but miraculously save both. May I present Exhibit A:

The LI standing between the Hero and their one weakness: literally every time Lena has built anti-kryptonite suits, protected Kara before she knew her identity, and specifically Exhibit B:

The Hero finding strength from their LI: the CW sure loves using El Mayarah in Supercorp posts! And social media aside, we've seen how confident and strong Lena makes Kara, both in dialogue and visually. (And it's a bonus that Kara makes Lena stronger too!)

Everything with food

Kara literally referred to food as a love language when talking to Nia. Only an episode or so away from bringing Lena food from 3 different countries. And let’s remember how Kara offered to fly to Italy for her first date with James...

Kara also always brought Lena food, even before season 5. That was their Thing.

We also have to talk about the absences of food: Kara dropping potstickers at Pulitzer ceremony when she sees Lena and not accepting Dansen’s invitation to get food after her falling out with Lena.

It was established all the way back in Season 1 (very much so in the fun Flash crossover) that Kara thinks food is more important than everything and will often use it as a coping mechanism when she’s sad (like in Season 2/3 about Mon). Yet, she’s so devastated over Lena that she can’t even eat her favorite foods? Interesting.

Color schemes and certain shots

The red/blue color scheme consistently used with Supercorp, with exception to the purple tones used in Season 5 to represent their conflict.

No other love interest for Kara has consistently used that iconic Super/LL color palet. Not James, Mon, William, or the two episodes with Adam.

I'd like to specifically remind everyone how Kara chose to wear purple with William, against Alex's explicit advice.

There are always lighting choices made with Supercorp shots. No other duo (besides dramatic Danvers sisters shots) seem to have such artistic care.

Do I even need to mention the balcony scenes? Both at the Pulitzer Ceremony and in scenes from multiple seasons where Kara has hovered over Lena's balcony-- most notably in 5x03.

Like seriously, do I need to mention the scene from 5x08 where Kara and Lena are looking longingly at the same picture of the two of them?

Music

If I know anything as a musician, I know scores. And Blake Neely has created certain melodies just for Supercorp saves. There’s the typical “Supergirl hero” melody, but it’s rarely used for scenes with Lena (besides the one instance in 5x07 cliff scene, when Neely combines the Leviathan theme with the Supergirl theme).

If you want to listen to examples: the brief save in 2x15 and the plane save in 3x05. Both melodies are unique, unreleased scores that (to my musical knowledge) have not been repeated with other Kara rescues. 

Also, can we talk about how Supercorp has their own heroic theme, composed specifically for the 100th episode? Played by a live orchestra? For the one AU where Kara and Lena were partners from the start?

Decisions made by Melissa and Katie

We know they've known about Supercorp since at least the end of Season 2. Melissa showed Katie and they've been aware for years.

Yet, they play into the Supercorp dynamic. Longing stares, giggly dialogue, tear filled eyes, etc.

Regarding Melissa specifically: for her directorial debut she made two significant decisions. 1. She chose to have a camera pan over the room during Lex's speech, showing only Lena noticing Kara leaving and upset. 2. She dressed Lena in two comics Lois Lane outfits, one of which in red to parallel Kara's blue.

Melissa also has played Kara's interractions with Lena very similarly to how she played the Kara/James dynamic in Season 1. Something she chose not to do with Mon or William. But let's get into my next point...

Despite the mistreatment of Supercorp fans, and LGBT fans in general, by some actors and crew, and despite the tone deaf plot lines and usage of characters, Supercorp has consistently held up with all of my points stated above. That's why I still have days where I can just feel it in my bones that Supergirl is playing the slow burn game with Supercorp. It clearly won't be as well-done as Catradora, because of how much sh*t they've pulled over the seasons. But just like you, I have days where I get strong feelings that maybe it’s all part of their poorly thought out plan and we’ll get that validation and happiness.

Que nous a-t-on raconté sur les bienfaits du modèle suédois en matière de mœurs et pour son ouverture aux merveilles qu'allait apporter l'invasion démographique en cours… C'est très simple, expliquaient ces imbéciles : il suffit, comme le font si bien les suédois, d'être ‘’maso’’ et de refuser le réel et l’évident… et bientôt, le bonheur sera dans le pré ! Cinq ans plus tard, le réveil est terrible, comme l’annonçaient “ceux qui pensent avec leur tête” plutôt que selon une “doxa”.

  Aujourd'hui, la “Saison 2” pourrait s'appeler : “Cauchemar au royaume de l'environnement heureux, des énergies renouvelables et de l'immigration incontrôlée”... Un silence systématique est organisé”. Sauf que “ça”, c'était … avant ! En effet, il y a quelques semaines, pratiquement tous les journalistes suédois (un peu moins fanatiques dans leurs idéologies frelatées que  leurs confrères français –voyez comme je suis gentil : j'écris “confrères” en un seul mot, ce qui m'est inhabituel !) ont été forcés d’ouvrir les yeux et de devenir honnêtes et intelligents, tant les faits sont alarmants !

  Judith Bergman écrit  : “L'accueil d'un nombre important de migrants sur une période de temps relativement courte, de 2012 à 2017 (donc pas seulement le pic migratoire de 2015), a placé les municipalités devant un taux de chômage élevé, une hausse de la pauvreté infantile et une augmentation des dépenses sociales. Et depuis, si la situation ne s'est pas améliorée, la capacité de résilience s'amenuise. Ceux qui le peuvent vont s'installer ailleurs dans le pays ou à l'étranger.   Un exemple généralisable : Claes Hultgren, maire de Filipstad, petite ville de 10 000 habitants, se plaignait récemment que de 2012 à 2018, 640 Suédois “de souche” avaient quitté sa ville, remplacées par  963 personnes originaires de Syrie, de Somalie, d'Erythrée, d'Afghanistan et d'Irak … ayant un niveau d'éducation très bas et ne vivant que grâce à l'aide sociale. Ces nouveaux arrivants vivent à l'écart du reste de la société, ne cherchent jamais à sortir de l'exclusion où ils s'enferment, et sont un poids énorme pour l'économie locale.  La plupart d'entre eux ne possède aucune des qualifications minimales qui peuvent permettre d'accéder au marché du travail et ils ne pourront survivre qu'en étant totalement à la charge de la société”.  

  En dix ans, les dépenses sociales ont augmenté de 200% dans cette petite ville, comme dans tant d’autres : 2,9 millions d'euros pour 2019  (= 31 millions SKr), contre 930 000 euros en 2009.  En élargissant à l'échelle nationale, le taux de chômage est de 80% chez les arrivants d'origine extra-européenne, et tout le corps social est donc frappé par ce mal qui engendre de terribles manques d'enseignants et d'infirmières, deux éléments-clés de cet État dit social-démocrate. Dans tout le pays, cette vague de réfugiés exerce une énorme pression, en particulier sur les municipalités les plus pauvres, et le coût de la sécurité sociale nationale explose.

  Mais ce n'est pas tout ! La violence des gangs, les agressions, les coups de feu, les attentats à la bombe et les incendies de voitures poussent les suédois à l'exode, car ceux qui se sont plaints ont été menacés et leurs maisons ont été ’'caillassées”. Ici, c'est un homme assassiné en plein jour, près d'un terrain de jeu rempli de parents et d'enfants. Là, ce sont des balles perdues qui traversent les fenêtres, manquant de peu des enfants.. Ailleurs, c'est un jeune suédois (battu, volé et menacé de mort par des gangs), à qui les autorités suédoises ont recommandé de ne pas porter plainte “pour éviter que les choses ne s'aggravent pour lui… “ (sic !)  Voilà ce qu'est devenu, en quelques années, l'ex-’'paradis social-démocrate”  mille fois invoqué par les Gauches françaises pour son ouverture à leurs fantasmes qu'ils disaient ’'sociétaux” et qui n'étaient que faussement humanitaires (on dirait, en bon français : “qui étaient, à peu de choses près, tout ce qu'il faut absolument éviter” !).

  La majorité des citoyens français ne devrait pas avoir trop de mal à comprendre la morale de cette histoire : le nombre de quartiers qui sont devenus, en très peu de temps, des insupportables “zones de non-droit” (le mot lui-même est une honte, un déni, une défaite) sont un avertissement menaçant à tous les habitants des “beaux quartiers” de Paris, ces idiots que j'entends répéter, comme si cela avait  le moindre sens : “moi… je suis tranquille, là où j'habite…” : ils se préparent des réveils que je ne leur envie pas. Mais, tant chez les français que chez les suédois, combien ont la lucidité de tirer les conséquences à moyen terme de ces histoires -qui se retrouvent presque à l'identique dans les autres pays européens, pour les mêmes causes ?   Combien ont le courage de se demander pourquoi et comment ils en sont arrivés si vite à une situation aussi catastrophique ? Et combien osent reconnaître que c'est tout le “corpus idéologique” actuel qui doit être abandonné et oublié, au plus vite ?

  Cette dernière remarque pose une fois de plus deux questions récurrentes. La première : “les musulmans (et /ou l'islam) sont-ils totalement inadaptables à tout autre monde que le leur ?”. Et la seconde, qui est encore plus dérangeante : “les musulmans que nous savons ou voyons ’'intégrés” sont-ils, sauf exceptions bien sûr, définitivement sincères, comme le sont tous les juifs, tous les chrétiens, et tant d'autres… ?“. En 1993 officiellement, mais bien avant ça en réalité, mon cher ami le roi Hassan II du Maroc répondait par la négative, en justifiant brillamment des raisons qu'auraient dû entendre tous les sourds-par-système qui ont laissé se pourrir les relations entre les Etats d'Afrique et notre pays –que la majorité de leurs habitants ne demandait qu'à aimer… Quant à nous… nous n'échapperons pas à l'obligation impérative de leur trouver une ou des réponse(s) à toutes les deux. Mais ce n'est ni le jour, ni le ’'billet”. Demain, peut-être, ou une autre fois… In cha Allah !
