Somebody on Twitter pointed out that almost all of the netflix Avatar show was filmed so that the focus of the action would be at the center, so it could be viewed vertically, like on tiktok

why do I see people complaining left and right aboout them cutting sokkas sexism arc but not about them completely cutting sokka out of the jet arc??? which in my humble opinion was much more important to sokkas character development overall and as a leader. sokka being the only one not blindly believing jet and his heroic act and instead trusting his instinct and revealing jets twisted morals and cruel plan that could have led to the death of a whole village full of innocent people??? no one???

The most annoying thing in Avatar live action is that Aang is not stupid enough. I want him and Sokka to share that one last brain cell and afterwards lend it to Toph and Zuko… i want him to be the imbecile he truly is…

So I had to stop on episode 6. Gonna continue watching tonight. I just have one thing to say so far. People think a good adaptation is the one that follows the story of the original. It’s not. It’s the characters. The characters are the ones that made the original so good. And none of them are as fleshed out here. You cannot seriously tell me the katara you see in the original is the one you see in the live action.
The writers decided to take the struggle and the growth of the characters away. I’m on episode 6. So far, Aang had everything come so easy to him, he didn’t struggle at all. Kyoshi fought for him at Kyoshi island. He enters the spirit world so easily, he finds Roku so freaking fast, he immediately knows Hei Bai is the spirit of the forest, out of nowhere. He learns absolutely nothing through those 6 episode. I could talk for hours about how that scene with Gyatso was a cop out. Why should their main character suffer right? He shouldn’t. So they just make up a scene where Aang meets Gyatso and he just outright tells him there’s nothing he could have done so he shouldn’t feel guilty.
The OG never had that scene. Because the OG knew the audience was smart enough to realize it themselves. There was nothing Aang could have done if he hadn’t run away, he would have died. But Aang needs to realize this himself, he needs to confront his feelings, learn from his mistakes, forgive himself and move on. But these days, writers don’t want their characters going through a journey, nope, the characters are just perfect, from the beginning to end.
Same said for Zuko. The writers apparently decided to make him softer, have higher morals, not as angry or determined, because that would make Zuko complex and interesting. He was good at heart in the OG show too, but he was spoiled and angry and violent. He’s none of that here, he’s gentle and respectful to everyone and just wants to capture the avatar, but not too much though. Zuko doesn’t even give everything he has to capture Aang, he doesn’t hire pirates, he doesn’t hire June himself (Iroh has to convince him to do it), he doesn’t follow Aang into the fire nation, you don’t feel his desperation, his determination, just how much he wants to go home. How could his journey feel interesting when we don’t see the dramatic shift in his character? The most interesting character in the show is not as ineteresting when he doesn’t go from a spoiled angry hurt teenager to an honorable smart and compassionate young man.
Yes, the story is fine, the visuals are nice, but it’s all very surface level. Everything is just flat.

Can I speak on another hot take (maybe) that I’ve been sitting on
Tumblr media
I haven’t seen anyone else on tumblr bring this up yet but it was the first thing I noticed with the shots we get from Kyoshi Island…
Why is Sokka not in the dress??? Or the makeup????? He’s still in his regular clothes, and this is a pretty clear shot of them during his training. In the og series, Suki made him change before she started teaching him anything because it was important to her that if he was to learn the combat skills used by the Kyoshi warriors, he also had to respect their traditions and uniform. It wasn’t just a silly “haha they made the misogynistic guy wear a dress” moment, it was a sign of respect for the Kyoshi warriors, their sacred traditions, and Avatar Kyoshi herself. So why is he not doing that???
Aside from Suki rightfully kicking sokka’s ass in this episode and beating the misogyny out of him, a large message in this episode was the fact that Sokka was deconstructing his misguided enforcement of gender roles by going directly against them and wearing and dress and makeup, even if it was part of a warrior uniform.
At first I thought “ok, maybe they’re just doing things in a different order” but no. In the trailer we see a shot of Suki and Sokka fighting side by side like they did at the end of the original episode, and even then Sokka is still in his regular clothes. It just looks like he’s wearing the top layer of Kyoshi warrior armor over his regular clothes since they’re in a battle.
Tumblr media
I really hate this because not only is it disrespecting their traditions, but it also makes Suki’s character seem like a push over for allowing him to stay in his regular clothes while simultaneously utilizing their armor. Her original character was a total badass, and had such a powerful spirit that Sokka willingly bowed down to, so she would have never let him get away with that.
Another reason to be skeptical of the live action </3

Me: Wow, the Netflix ATLA was better than what I expected. Indeed, it felt too rushed, probably because they were asked to do only 8 episodes like everything in the platform; but they were still able to capture the feeling of the original, and it was an enjoyable show. Not to mention the effects, those were so well done, especially Zuko fire kicks, I loved those.
Me: *checks internet opinions*
Me: Oh... I'm supposed to hate this adaptation.
