“Sod that”… my favorite expression from now on.
Plus I was expecting this moment to take place on a Cave and under a terrible context situation because… HERONDALE STUFF. But I actually enjoy the way it developed, I was glad I got to see Cordelia being happy with James. And the way this moment is written… how can it be so tender and full of love but also like desperate and rough.
I keep blushing every time I remember James asking Cordelia “How much do you like this dress?” 😮‍💨

I love, love learning languages. The initial euphoria of being able first to read words, then to understand them, even if it’s something completely mundane - oh look, here’s an exit in the subway car, and the instructions tell you to boil the pasta for 10 minutes! And then, after some months of stringing words together into sentences, with much cursing at the dictionary, you attempt to read (yet another) poem...and after keeping the words carefully leashed in your mind to trace the meaning through them, something clicks! You realize that the poem is beautiful in the language you have been learning, not just in its content, not just in the language of the translation. In fact, you are beginning to catch the feeling that the translation could only approximate, but the feeling is here, in the poem, in front of your eyes. You feel that you have broken through, at last, a new language has opened up for you like a doorway (into a labyrinth, not an amusement park, but oh! the treasures that lie ahead).
---
So I just got there with my Latin (Catullus - Ave atque vale) that I have been teaching myself since August, and I feel that I should at the very least be hearing trumpets and seeing fireworks, celebrating that I have made it, that a new language has just opened up for me and there is so much, so much more to learn and to discover. Dizzyingly, it’s also a poem that has been around for 2000 years, and, I like to imagine, hitting Latin learners with the grief and beauty in it for just as long. This connection to centuries of learners has been one of the reasons for me to learn classical Latin, in addition to its pleasant orderliness, the sheer joy of learning languages in general and an interest in the history of Rome.

Multas per gentes et multa per aequora vectus
advenio has miseras, frater, ad inferias,
ut te postremo donarem munere mortis
et mutam nequiquam alloquerer cinerem
quandoquidem fortuna mihi tete abstulit ipsum
heu miser indigne frater adempte mihi
nunc tamen interea haec, prisco quae more parentum
tradita sunt tristi munere ad inferias,
accipe fraterno multum manantia fletu.
Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale.

BITCHES BASTARDS NON BINARY HOES HOLY SHIT.
I JUST FINISHED TALES FROM THE SHADOWHUNTER ACADEMY.
This. this is the one where they focus on Simon. Yes Simon, Clary Fairchild's parabatai. But also Simon Lewis-Lovelace who is a fucking badass. And Simon Lewis-Lovelace the hero. Amen.
This dude named 35 rats with his roommate after the dude who made their first year feel like shit.
THIS DUDE WENT HARD BRO.
AND THE FLASHBACKS? CATARINA TALKING ABT HER KID. IT WAS QUICK BUT STILL. HER DOING IT BECAUSE OF RAGNOR?? AND MAX LIGHTWOOD-BANE. THEN ROBERT FIGHTING MARYSE FOR MAX'S SECOND NAME??? MICHAEL BEING IN LOVE WITH ROBERT???
HELEN AND ALINE'S WEDDING. IT MADE ME FURIOUS. JUAT THE ONE DAY? HELEN BEING CONFINED INTO THAT ONE APARTMENT/ROOM THING? AND THE FACT THAT HELEN STILL OFFERED TO HELP IZZY WITH SIMON? LIKE BRO I NEED A FRIEND LIKE HER.
And the chaos that are the Lightwoods. And the fact that one of the more memorable Lightwoods, according to Magnus, WAS ANNA LIGHTWOOD. MY GIRL.

⚠️COT SPOILERS⚠️
You know, Christopher Lightwood was always one of my favourite characters even though no one paid attention to him. Not gonna lie, it’s kinda annoying that you all SUDDENLY love him just cause he died-

Black dreams; the pale and sorrowful desire Whose eyes have looked on Lethe and have seen, Deep in the sliding ebon tide serene, Their own vain light inverted; the vain lyre That only tells of love and languishing; Autumnal roses blind with rain; slow foam From desert-sinking seas, with honeycomb Of aconite and poppy—these I bring With this my bitter, barren love to thee; And from the grievous springs of memory, Far in the great Maremma of my heart, I proffer thee to drink; and on thy mouth, With the one kiss wherein we meet and part, Leave fire and dust from quenchless leagues of drouth.

Kinda sad Christopher didn’t even get a funeral. Like we didn’t even see him go through all the Shadowhunter burial rites and we didn’t get an Ave Atque Vale for him nor did we see anyone truly grieving him. He was done so dirty 😔😔😔

actually this was the worst possible moment to take that last reblog out of drafts because now i am thinking about catullus 101 and the tai sui brothers in perpetuum at the same time. like. xi ping is definitely multas per gentes (quite literally) et multa per aequora vectus and he is on a journey to see zhou ying but from there it diverges irrevocably because he has no gifts or rites and certainly no brother’s tears to offer, he saw zhou ying’s “death” and knows it wasn’t fortune but his own choice that took him away, and instead of speaking to silent ashes he is silent holding zhou ying’s last words etched onto the shattered mirror…  yet the feeling i get from the poem vs their final meeting/parting in tai sui is so similar.

I’m just gonna say it…
Christopher Lightwood was the worst, the saddest, the hardest death to get through that Cassie has ever written.
More than Livvy or George Lovelace. Christopher was the closest to the main characters, if not a main character himself, part of a solid group and actually had a future laid out for him (his inventions, Grace) and it was stolen from him.
Christopher Lightwood deserved better. Ave Atque Vale, Kit.
(because no one in the book said it for you)

Star Trek: Prodigy
Tumblr media
I hurriedly binged this the night before last and last night to have a look at it before it vanished. (You know how it is... you put something off, and put it off, and then things suddenly get interesting.)
It's a serious shame that there will not be a second season of this airing at Paramount+. I seem to recall hearing that they're completing production on what they've got and will be "trying to find it another home."
I very much hope they do. I enjoyed what I saw, these last couple of nights. The animation style was handsome and the writing was sharp. There were some story and character choices I wouldn't have made, but (shrug) I wasn't in the room; so, whatever. It felt like good solid Star Trek to me; I'll miss not seeing more of it.
I was seeing reports on Twitter last night that it had already been pulled from P+, but here on the European side it lingered through today. If you're over here and subscribing, and want to catch a last glimpse, according to the article above tonight's your last chance.
Meanwhile: ave atque vale, Prodigy.
