I think throwing Baldr's Gate into hell would be a wonderful gesture equivalent to a marriage proposal for Raphael, but it's very large-scale, so here's a smaller fantasy.
Tav is the leader of the Baal cult who would really like to attract the attention of the charming devil. However, Raphael rejected her many times, but at the last meeting he carelessly threw a joke that if the city falls into hell in his name, he will definitely give the cultist his attention. Then everything went quiet, maybe for half a year. And now imagine Raphael's face when, sitting on the balcony in his house, he saw a small town appear above the river Styx?
Now he is obliged to pay a visit to her temple. Of course he found this alternatively gifted leader there. And she is genuinely surprised and of course glad that he came.
- Oh, handsome, why did you come now?
- Why? All the townspeople and newspapers are trumpeting the death of the town in hell, and in Averno, Zariel was very surprised that her same adventure was stopped, and in the name of Raphael everything worked out. - the devil was angry, his eyes were almost burning, and his hands were rising rapidly in gestures.
- Hmm ... - Tav thought about it - I didn't have a chance to make sure that my present arrived. But this is just a rehearsal for the ritual, I thought you wouldn't come for such a small offering.
- A trial?
Raphael's anger flared up, but he rested against the innocent eyes of this unreasonable creature. The incident with the town provided him with a lot of souls, but at the same time an unpleasant interest from the Archduchess. A lot of eloquence had to be spent to neutralize this situation.
- Well, yes, it was necessary to make sure that the ritual was working.
To complement Tav's charming image, only awkwardly folded hands were missing from this awkward voice.
All of Raphael's methods of working with people were designed for the sane, but here he understood that they were not suitable.
- How does your God feel about offerings to hellish creatures?
-My Father favors the massacre,- Tav said with inspiration, spreading her arms to the sides, - But he doesn't need the currency of souls.
A spark of interest lit up in Raphael's eyes.
- Well, that's it... Will you be waiting for the next gift? - Tav said hopefully
- No, no, my dear, that's not necessary. It seems we are ready to make a deal.
- Yes!
Tav jumped up and down joyfully.
- Yes, little rabbit, calm down.  He touched the top of her head lightly to stop her jumping.- As a suggestion to you, from now on, and on your behalf, the souls of all the victims in the name of Baal are transferred to me.
- And you and I will be connected and you will visit me? - It would be difficult for anyone else in this universe to understand this joy.
-That's right, intelligent creature.
Raphael's condescension was in the air. He had been hoping to avoid her attention for so long. To mess with the offspring of Baal is the height of stupidity, and he will remember it more than once. But it won't work to just kill without consequences, and it's stupid to give up the benefits. Well, let's see what happens.

I feel like such a fool. Every time I see you answer one of those 'I had no idea you wrote that Star Trek book!' asks I get a smug feeling, because I've been reading ST books since the 80s so of course I knew that already. *Nods sagely* And now it turns out that I had no idea you wrote the ST:TNG book Dark Mirror, which was one of my favourites back in the day, so thank you.
You're completely welcome! I'm glad you liked it. It was a whole lot of fun to write, in an unnerving kind of way. (For C.S. Lewis was right to point out how easy it can be, how seductive even, to get caught up in writing characters who're having fun being evil. Several times while I was writing that book, I had to kind of pull back and remind myself that sure, the descent to Avernus is easy, but getting out again... that's where the real work is going to be, if you're not careful.)
...Anyway, it's no surprise other people can't always be sure about how many of these I've written, and which ones. To tell the truth, it sometimes surprises me (when I've had to stop and take a count) that I've written so many. All I can say at this end of time is that I suspect I was having too much fun to stop. And, since I'm a first-generation Trekkie, stopping can seem like some kind of obscure betrayal.
Of course the flip side of this kind of behavior is that there are many people who have no idea I've ever done anything else... even though my Trek work is only 20% of my output. I suppose I just have to console myself with the thought that some day a copy of one of the Young Wizards books or the Middle Kingdoms novels will jump out of some dark corner and take them by surprise. (Or the Spider-Man novels, or the NetForce novels, or, or, or...)
At any rate, I still have one more Trek novel in me; the question is whether I'm going to be able to get around to it any time soon, as I've got other universes to tend to. I should have my agent give Pocket Books a yell and see if they've got any interest in one more DD Trek novel...
(headclutch) (muttering: Oh sweet Thoth help me. Facilis descensus Averno...) :)

hiiiii rosy! if you’ve had any good reads lately pls consider this a free pass to talk about them- i love hearing what you’re up to in the world of literature & am curious to hear whether any of the book recs you’ve been sent worked out! <3
hiii anon this is such a sweet ask, thank you so much!
i've read a lot this year (compared to my usual, i'm now at 13 books and i used to average one monthly). but this is also due to cutting down fic reading & writing, which i'm slowly picking back up, trying to keep it very low-pressure and fun. (just today i read @antimonyandthyme's newest sebmick fic, which is incredible.)
the last thing i finished (yesterday) was Averno by Louise Glück -- it's a gorgeous collection. it touches upon death, complicated family relations, grief, and also -- i'm sure there are better words for this, but i don't know them -- trauma that often comes with becoming a woman. see here, from averno:
Tumblr media
from a myth of innocence:
Tumblr media
the triumph of achilles has remained my fave collection of hers, but i liked averno better than the wild iris.
before that, i read neal shusterman's series arc of a scythe within like, a week. it's dystopian and ponders interesting ideas. there'll be a movie (allegedly) and i'm really curious about that -- i also started gleanings, which is a collection of short stories in the same universe. if anyone read the series, please hit me up because hooooo boy have i got some opinions.
i'm ALSO reading my dark vanessa but i admit i take a break after every chapter because it's quite heavy, but i love it so far!
and the book recs, i'm sorry i'm so terrible with them, but i've got all of them logged on my storygraph to read pile, and up next is: stone butch blues (i've only read excerpts before and i don't want my gay card revoked -- jk, jk), swimming in the dark, proper english and mort (discworld). i travel a lot and i always forget to download them and then i read whatever i have on the kindle or scribd app available!
okay one last thought: this year i finally got around reading margaret atwood (the handmaid's tale and alias grace) and james baldwin (go tell it on the mountain) and they were soooo good, i definitely want to read more of their works!

11, 25, and 38 for the writer asks?
11.  Books and/or authors who influenced you the most
i think if i were to study my style and influences, i could trace it back to a few key writers and their respective works that changed me:
anne carson (autobiography of red, grief lessons), heather o'neill (lullabies for little criminals), emma cline (the girls, daddy), madeline miller (the song of achilles, circe), china mieville (the scar, perdido street station), and louise gluck (averno, the triumph of achilles, the wild iris, poems 1962-2012), just to name a few.
25.  Favourite part of writing
maybe the control it allows me? i set the stage, i cast the characters, i grow them into monsters and heroes (sometimes a medley; sometimes neither). i shed them of their skin, wound them with tragedies, uncover their grief, and entangle them in love worth dying for. it's like playing with barbies again.
38.  Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had
during my first short fiction term, i became really overwhelmed with all the sexual assault stories being turned in (if you take a short fiction class in university, three things are certain: you will have peers who cannot punctuate dialogue, you will receive stories about sexual assault and serial killers, and you will read the worst drug-taking scenes from someone who has clearly never been high in their life).
so i wrote about a cruel and restrictive father who abuses his vegetarian child by force-feeding her meat. got an A for that one.

muse for  descencus averno .  morgan : the wheel of fortune .  reaper ;  booboo stewart .
STATS .
( taken ) name :  morgan . “birth”day : december 15  ( ageless ,  looks to be early 20s ) . nationality : n.a. species :  reaper . gender : agender . pronouns :  he / him ;  they / them . orientation :  bisexual & biromantic . religion :  unnecessary . moral alignment :  true neutral . occupation :  student assistant at columbia university libraries  ( butler building ,  rare books & manuscripts ) ,  part time . location :  shared flats .  all of them .  they appear wherever whenever they need something ,  and shared flats are good places where no one bats an eye at things going missing or random  ‘ friends ’  staying on the couch .  ( and if ,  well ,  that belief is adjusted easily enough . )
BIO .
THEY HAVE ALWAYS  worked on the premise that life is a circle ,  not a straight line .  of course it might seem that way from a mortal’s perspective  —  you’re born ,  you live ,  you die ,  bob’s your uncle .  god only  knew what came after ;  m certainly didn’t .  presumably ,  they must’ve done the same sprint at some point ,  but they can’t remember and honestly don’t care to .  you’re born ,  you live ,  you die  —  somebody else is born and lives and dies in that place  —  over and over .  ‘ round we go .  it’s the one principle of the world ;  what keeps it turning ,  actually ,  m is sure .
HISTORY  is fascinating ,  from that point of view .  m rarely gets involved ;  even in their  ‘ downtime ’  they prefer to observe ,  though some creatures tickle their fancy enough to step into action .  they’ve become  magnus  in the 1620s and  marianne  for some time in the 18th century ,  from their more memorable personas ;  mateo and mai and mona were too brief to be properly remembered .  they picked their names like coats and discarded them just as easily when the fabric’s worn out and it’s time to move on .
THAT MENTALITY  is what makes them so good at their job ;  things are what they are ,  and when someone’s time is up ,  it’s up .  ( and  ‘ round we go . )  they get curious ,  and compassionate ,  and every few decades maybe even  caring ,  but that doesn’t keep the world from turning .  ( not often ,  at least .  who’ll notice one or two stops that last barely half a second? )  when it counts  —  which is always ,  of course ,  almost  always  —  they go by the book , and have done so for  ...  millennia ,  probably .  who knows ?
BUT SOMEHOW ,  it seems that the world has started spinning faster .  there’s so much more to do ,  and  —  it’s not like they haven’t seen their share of atrocities over the years ,  but  ...  you’d think it’d get better ,  not worse .  but every time  one  way of death is eradicated ,  it seems humans invent three more in it’s place just to spite them .  there’s no more time for  observation ;  barely anything  worth  of it anyways .  for the first time in their entire existence ,  they feel  ...  exhausted .
IT SUCKS .
EVEN THE HUMANS  get sick leave  —  burn out ,  is it ?  they read a few articles ,  talk to a therapist ,  and decide to go on  holiday .  they’ve certainly earned it ,  although that’s easier said than done .  after all ,  being a reaper is not just a job ,  it’s a  calling  —  in the most literal sense ,  it seems .  how is anyone supposed to  relax  with this constant pull in their chest ?
THE CLOSEST THEY CAN GET  to turning off their phone is  —  repressing it .  the  tugging ,  the magic ,  half of their being ;  everything .  it takes a few decades  ( he mostly spends it on a farm ,  in some mountains somewhere ,  with a kind old lady who raps him on the head with a rolled up paper and calls him  ‘ e stießel ’  whenever he annoys her a bit too much  )  but eventually ,  most of his existence is pretty quiet .  vacation is nice ,  he decides .
AS THINGS USUALLY GO ,  everything turns bottom’s up right about then .  there’s a massive shift in the world and a whole bunch of presences that he was  decidedly  not aware of anymore go missing .  not his problem ,  though .  on  his  end of the world ,  things keep going ,  so nothing could have gone  that  badly ,  right ?
( wrong . )
CURRENT SITUATION
THE SECOND SHIFT  really kicks their worry into action ;  the universe feels realigned ,  but odd  —  like something was put together wrong ,  was  missing .  the change appears to originate from new york ,  so they decide to go to investigate .  just briefly ,  to see what’s up .  ( they’ve got a couple decades left on their vacation ,  they’d say . )
THEIR SKILLS  may be a bit rusty ,  by then ,  and they haven’t been to the city in quite some time  —  a lot has changed .  he really can’t be blamed for missing the beat a bit ,  landing in the middle of the street ,  and promptly getting run-over by a taxi .  the injuries are superficial  ( though kind passers-by insist on calling him an ambulance anyways ) ,  but his  ( possibly a little deranged )  laughter at the irony of the situation is likely what makes the emt’s decide to suggest keeping him in the hospital for a bit .
A NEW IDENTITY  is forged easily .  in the confusing aftermath of the accident ,  they come up with  ‘ umm ... morgan ’  at the spot ,  and go from there with the hospital survey .  he can look for a proper place to live later  —  for now ,  couch-surfing serves his needs just fine ;  he’s learning a lot about modern trends .  he looks to be in his early 20s ,  so being a student assistant somewhere  —  the library ,  for nostalgic reasons  —  seems like a believable idea .  and a good position to find out just  what the hell  has been going on in this here state ,  recently .
CONNECTION / PLOT IDEAS .
RUIN :  the past come back to haunt him in some shape or other .  definitely open to varying types of connections for this  —  maybe someone he helped to soothe in their last moments ?  or someone who regretted going with them ,  given where their death had lead them after ?  maybe a psychic-adept loved one of a person he reaped ,  recognizing him from the moment of death ?
COME BACK ALIVE :  someone he should have taken but didn’t .  or maybe did ,  and brought them back . it would have been a slow death ,  with a few close calls ,  that had him hovering on stand-by a lot ?  with just how bad it got ,  the person would’ve been able to see him and they’d have quite a few  ‘ last ’  conversations ,  and eventually ,  he started caring  ( even though he shouldn’t ) .  he has a love for human potential and this one seemed ... bright .  so he gave them another shot ;  a once-in-a-million-years moment of mercy .  he would’ve checked in on their life every once in a while and they’d have stayed close friends .
LANDSLIDE :  people they met in the process of considering or during their  ‘ vacation ’ .  random people they bugged for opinions in cafés and supermarkets and other heavily-frequented human places whom he can proudly tell he took their advice ;  people he came into contact with in the farm’s rural town or some brief travels .

Being summoned by the unassuming miss Hatter has not yielded much excitement, as of yet; she is, of course, supplying adequate amounts of mana (a surprisingly large amount, to be honest) and there are no complaints on his partHowever, Kirei thinks as he scans her form with cold crimson eyes, there must be more behind her quiet demeanor that he has not yet managed to unearth. These things take time, after all. "Ah, master. Are you already done with your duties for the day?" Her slightly disheveled appearance causes a smirk to appear on his face, as he moves to walk at her side. "Nothing out of the ordinary, I hope?"
Facilis descensus Averno.
Dulling headache pulsates at the right temple of Sophie Hatter's forehead, and the temporary cure comes in her rolling the ball of her wrist against it. Her eyes narrowed down the relatively empty corridor, not out of annoyance but haggard tiredness, making the world about her go slower and slower.
Today's investigations and research has been futile.
Countless memoirs, research books, philosophy and methodology references, and empirical resources pass the spellcaster's eyes, but the Augustinian legend's words haunt her attention. Though no pages are in front of her, her attention isn't fleeting but honed in one direction; all the energy in her body attempting to make a quick getaway to the recesses of her room.
Finding solutions, executing plans, and maintaining stability - these responsibilities never changed from her life outside here. Impromptu and true creativity in resolutions to the ongoing 'situation' - the greatest understatement of a word for current circumstances - comes in handy. But so many things are fixed with what are, admittedly, short and temporary fixes.
That train of thought halts, a distracting mass of red and black ribbons dancing at the corner of her sight. No skip of her heart nor fledging panic comes to her, for the incredible lack of energy in her person seems to render her indifferent.
"Father Kotomine, a pleasure to see you," Sophie's hand withdraws from her forehead and rests on her side. The priest's muted footfalls join at her side, and their footsteps echo through the quiet hallway.
The former vessel of Rasputin houses a creature of cold blood and scales - the fire-breathing dragon of agony and death, he who threatens benevolence.
However, without the presence of malevolence, how does one come to know goodness? The universe's own checks and balances, Sophie humors herself.
"It's Sophie," corrects the human, though her tone is not as kind and polite as she presented it with all others.
Her head slowly rises at that question. Eyes stained by sleeplessness follow the looming shadow at her side. He moves closer, asserting himself to be in a long conversation with her - expending what little energy and tolerance she mustered to bother walking in a seemingly public area.
Her head tilts slowly, stray copper locks from her braid falling in place. A short and slow blink comes before a sound finally leaves her - an incredulous breath of laughter.
Done? Done with my duties of the day? The day's responsibilities are the ongoing conundrum of returning to Fuyuki and their original timeline. Nothing of which has made a grand process.
Hold yourself, Sophie. She reminds herself, grabbing the reins of her shortened patience. There is little to give and to have in throwing yourself recklessly and openly to your displeasure and upset about yourself.
A failure you are, and it is no one else's fault that you haven't solved this yet.
"Still the same business as always. Nothing spectacular or extraordinary to be found with a plain thing as myself," the spellcaster explains. "If something different than normal is what you seek, perhaps you were truly summoned by the wrong person."
His earlier question made a smile appear on her face. It was not an optimistic smile nor a reaction based on how touched she could be that someone asked about her. The fact she was remotely 'done' with anything was far too funny to her.

im trying to understand more about the universe that was built in averno and the first thing i always try to consider while reading is the value and meaning of nature in louise's writing. so, when she writes about snow and relates it to purity, i think about the innocence of the first contact with snow and the magic that seasons can contain. i wanna be able to develop that inside me, this sensitivity towards the elements of earth and how much they can affect oneself.

Chapter 17, Pluto and the Underworld
In the beginning of the world, before the gods came to dwell in Olympus, all the universe was in the hands of the Titans; and among these the greatest was Saturn,—or Cronos,39—who wedded his sister Rhea (also called Cybele) and became the father of three sons and three daughters, Jupiter, Pluto, Neptune, Ceres, Vesta, and Juno. For many ages Saturn and Rhea, having subdued all the opposing Titans, ruled over heaven and earth; but when the cruelty of Saturn drove his children into rebellion, there arose a mighty war in the universe, in which the sons and daughters of Saturn leagued against their father, who had called upon the other Titans for aid. After years of combat the six brothers and sisters, helped by the Cyclops,40 defeated the allied Titans and imprisoned them in the black abyss of Tartarus—all except a few who had not joined in the war against the children of Saturn. Among those who were wise enough to accept the new sovereignty were Mnemosyne (Memory) and138 Themis, goddess of justice. Those descendants of the Titans who refused to acknowledge the supremacy of Jupiter were consigned to the center of Mount Etna, and were the giants who constantly turned over and over, making Pluto fear for the safety of his realm. A few of the giants were spared: Atlas, whose punishment was to hold the heavens on his shoulders, and Prometheus and Epimetheus who had espoused the cause of Jupiter and so escaped the fate of the conquered Titans. When the children of Saturn found themselves masters of the world, they agreed to accept Jupiter as their ruler, on condition that the two other brothers be given a share in the universe. So a division was made whereby Pluto became king of the underworld—or Hades; Neptune took the dominion of the sea; and Jupiter, having married his sister, Juno, established his dwelling in Olympus as lord of heaven and earth.
The kingdom of Pluto41 was dreaded by all mortals, and its ruler inspired men with great fear. Though Pluto was known to visit the earth from time to time, no one wished to see his face, and each man dreaded the moment when he should be obliged to appear before the grim monarch of Hades, and be assigned a place among the innumerable dead. No temples were dedicated to Pluto, though altars139 were sometimes erected on which men burned sacrifices to this inexorable god while petitioning him to be merciful to the souls of the departed. The festivals held in his honor were celebrated only once in a hundred years, and on these occasions none but black animals were killed for the sacrifice.
The underworld, over which Pluto reigned, was deep in the heart of the earth; but there were several entrances to it, one being near Lake Avernus, where the mist rising from the waters was so foul that no bird could fly over it. The lake itself was in an extinct volcano near Vesuvius. It was very deep, and was surrounded by high banks covered with a thick forest. The first descent into Hades could be easily accomplished (facilis descensus Averno, says the poet Virgil); but no mortal was daring enough to venture far into the black depths, lest he should never again see the light of day.
At the portals of Hades sits the fierce three-headed dog Cerberus, who keeps all living things from entering the gate, and allows no spirit that has once been admitted to pass out again. From here a long dark pathway leads deeper into Hades, and is finally lost in the rivers that flow around Pluto's throne. The waters of the river Cocytus are salt, as they are made of the tears that stream forever from the eyes of those unhappy souls who are condemned to labor in Tartarus—that part of Hades140 that is the exclusive abode of the wicked. The Phlegethon River, which is always on fire, separates Tartarus from the rest of Hades, and wretched indeed is the soul that is forced to cross its seething waters. On the banks of the Acheron, a black and turbid river, stand the souls who come fresh from the sunlit earth; for all must pass this river and be brought before the judgment-throne of Pluto. There is no bridge over the murky stream, and the current is so swift that the boldest swimmer would not trust himself to its treacherous waters. The only way to cross is by the leaky, worm-eaten boat rowed by Charon, an aged ferryman who has plied his oar ever since the day that the curse of death first came upon the earth.
No spirit is allowed to enter the leaky craft until he has first paid Charon the fee of a small coin called the obolus. (During the funeral services, before the body is committed for burial, this coin is laid on the tongue of the dead, that the soul may have no trouble in passing to the throne of Pluto.) If any spirits cannot furnish the necessary money, they are ruthlessly pushed aside by the mercenary boatman and are required to wait a hundred years. At the end of this time Charon grudgingly ferries them over the river free of charge. As the unstable boat can hold but few, there is always an eager group of spirits on the further bank, clamoring to be taken141 across the river; but Charon is never in a hurry, and repulses, sometimes with his oar, the pitiful crowd that waits his grim pleasure.
There is also in Hades the river Styx, by whose sacred waters the gods swear the most terrible of all oaths, and on the other side of Pluto's throne is the softly flowing Lethe, of which only those souls can drink who are to spend endless days of happiness in the Elysian Fields. As soon as those blessed spirits have tasted of the waters of Lethe, all regrets for friends that mourn completely vanish, and the joy and grief, and pleasure and pain of the soul's life on earth are forgotten. In the Elysian Fields there is no darkness such as fills the rest of Hades with its thick gloom; but a soft light spreads over the meadows where the spirits of the thrice-blessed wander. There are willows here, and stately silver poplars, and the "meads of Asphodel" breathe out a faint perfume from their pale flowers."There do men lead easiest lives. No snow, no bitter cold, no beating rains are there." —Bryant's Odyssey, Book IV, line 722.
The sighs and groans that rise by night and day from the black abyss of Tartarus do not reach the ears of those who dwell at peace in the Elysian Fields, and the sight of its painful torments is hid forever from their eyes.

Pluto and his queen Proserpina are seated side by side on a sable throne, ruling over the myriad souls that compose the vast kingdom of the dead. Perched on the back of the throne is the blinking owl, who loves this eternal darkness, and the black-winged raven that was once a bird of snowy plumage and the favorite messenger of Apollo. The raven fell from his high estate on account of some unwelcome tidings that he once brought to Apollo when that god was an ardent lover of the fair-haired Coronis. Believing that no one could supplant him in the maiden's affections, Apollo was happy in the thought of being beloved by so beautiful a mortal; but one day his snow-white raven flew in haste to Olympus to tell him that the maiden was listening to the wooing of another lover. Enraged at this duplicity, Apollo seized his bow and shot the faithless Coronis; but the moment that he saw her lying dead, he repented of his rash deed and vainly sought to restore143 her to life. Though skilled in the art of healing, Apollo could not save the maiden; and in his frenzied grief he cursed the unfortunate raven that had brought the evil tidings, and banished it forever from his sight."Then he turned upon the Raven, 'Wanton babbler! see thy fate! Messenger of mine no longer, Go to Hades with thy prate! 'Weary Pluto with thy tattle! Hither, monster, come not back; And—to match thy disposition— Henceforth be thy plumage black.'" —Saxe.
Near Pluto's throne are seated the three judges of Hades (Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Æacus) who question all souls that are brought across the river. When they have learned every detail of the newcomer's past life, they deliver the cowering spirit into the hands of Themis, the blindfolded goddess of justice, who weighs impartially the good and bad deeds in her unerring scales. If the good outweighs the evil, the soul is led gently to the Elysian Fields; but if the bad overbalances the good, then the wretched spirit is driven to Tartarus, there to suffer for all its wrongdoings in the fires that burn forever and ever behind the brazen gates. To these gates144 the guilty one is urged by the three Furies,42 whose snaky hair shakes hideously as they ply their lashes to goad the shrinking soul to its place of torment. Sometimes they are joined by Nemesis, goddess of revenge, who hurries the doomed spirit over the fiery waters of the Phlegethon with her merciless whip, and sees that it follows no path but the one leading to the brazen gates of Tartarus.
As soon as the gates close on the newly-admitted soul, there is a renewed clamor of voices, while heart-breaking sighs and groans mingle with the curses of those who in their misery dare to defy the gods. And beneath all the awful sounds that greet the listener's ears, there is an undertone of pitiful wailing like the sea's "melancholy, long-withdrawing roar" that seems to come from millions of throats too feeble to utter a loud cry. The deepest sighs proceed from the Danaïdes,—the beautiful daughters of Danaüs, king of Argos,—who must forever strive to fill a bottomless cask with water. They form a sad procession as, with their urns on their arms, they go down to the stream to begin their hopeless task, and then climb wearily up the steep bank to pour the water into the ever-empty cask. If they pause a moment, exhausted with fatigue, the whips of some avenging attendants of Pluto lash them again into145 action. Their punishment is severe, but the crime for which they are suffering was a dreadful one. The fifty daughters of Danaüs were once pledged in marriage to the fifty sons of Ægyptus, brother of Danaüs; but when the wedding was being celebrated, their father remembered the words of an ancient prophecy that said that he would die by the hand of his son-in-law. Fearing for his life, he confided to his daughters what the oracle had foretold, and gave them each a dagger, bidding them slay their husbands. On the evening of the wedding, when the sons of Ægyptus were heavy with wine, the new-made wives stole in upon them and killed them as they slept. Danaüs then believed himself safe, until he learned that one of his daughters had spared her husband out of love for him. This son-in-law was eager to avenge his brothers' murder, and having sought out the wicked Danaüs, fulfilled the prophecy by killing the king with the very dagger intended for his own death. The gods punished the cruel daughters—except Hypermnestra, who had saved her husband—by condemning them to labor in Tartarus at their impossible task.
Near the Danaïdes stands Tantalus, the father of Niobe, who on earth was a most inhuman and brutal king. He ill-treated his subjects, defied the gods, and dared to make his own will the religion of his kingdom. He boasted that the gods were not so146 omniscient as people were led to believe; and insulted the immortals by offering them at a banquet the flesh of his own son Pelops, believing that they would never learn the truth of this loathsome feast. But the gods were not deceived, and left the meal untouched,—all except poor Ceres, who, still mourning over her daughter's detention in Hades, did not realize what was happening and bit off some of the lad's shoulder. When the gods restored Pelops to life, Ceres was very sorry for her carelessness and gave him a shoulder of ivory. The inhuman Tantalus was condemned to the torments of Tartarus, where he stands up to his chin in a clear stream. Though frenzied with thirst he can never drink of the water, for whenever he bends his head the stream recedes from his parched lips. Above him hangs a branch of delicious fruit; but when, tormented with hunger, he strives to grasp it, the branch eludes his eager fingers. Thus he stays, always "tantalized" by the sight of food and drink he never can secure.
Not far from Tantalus is Salmoneus, also a king, who dared to challenge the gods by impersonating Jupiter. He made a huge bridge of brass, and drove heavily over it while he threw lighted torches among the people who were waiting below, hoping thus to frighten them into believing that he was the very ruler of the heavens who hurls the mighty thunderbolts. This insult to his divinity so angered147 Jupiter that he seized a real thunderbolt and soon dispatched the arrogant king. When Salmoneus came before the throne of Pluto, his fate was quickly decided, and he was driven to terrible Tartarus, where he sits under a huge rock that threatens every moment to fall and crush him beneath its weight.
Another unhappy king is Sisyphus, who, when ruler of Corinth, became a famous robber, and in the pride of his great wealth dared to set the gods at naught. Therefore he was consigned to Tartarus, and his punishment is to roll an immense stone to the top of a steep hill. As soon as he reaches the summit, the rock slips from his aching arms and tumbles to the foot of the hill, and he must at once start on the hopeless task of pushing it up the long ascent again."With many a weary step, and many a groan, Up the high hill he heaves a huge round stone." —Homer—Pope's translation.
Beyond Sisyphus lies Tityus, a giant whose huge body covers nine acres of ground. He was condemned to the blackness of Tartarus because he dared to affront a goddess with his addresses, and so was doomed to suffer, like Prometheus, by being chained to a rock, while a vulture tears at his liver. Near him is Ixion, who was promised the hand of a certain maiden in marriage, on condition that he148 would give her father a large sum of money. Ixion agreed, but when the maiden became his wife, he refused to give the stipulated sum, in spite of her father's clamorous demands. At length, wearied by the old man's insistence, Ixion slew him; but the deed did not go unpunished, for the gods summoned him to appear before them and answer for his cruelty. Ixion pleaded his cause so well that Jupiter was about to dismiss him, when he saw the presumptuous mortal making love to Juno. This offense could not be overlooked, so Ixion was sent to Tartarus, where he was bound to an ever-revolving wheel of fire.
If any one could follow the course of the gentle Lethe River, it would lead beyond the sunless realm of Pluto to a quiet and far-distant valley, where, in a soundless cave, live Somnus, the god of sleep, and his twin brother Mors, god of death. "Here the sun, whether rising or in his mid course, or setting, can never come; and fogs, mingled with the dimness, form a strange twilight. No wakeful bird calls forth the morn, nor do watchful dogs disturb the brooding silence. No sound of wild beast or cattle, nor any noise of creaking bough, nor human voice, breaks in upon the perfect stillness, where mute Rest has her abode. Before the cave bloom abundant poppies and other sleep-producing herbs, which Night gathers, that she may distil their juice and scatter slumbers on the darkened earth. Within149 the cave is no door that could creak on rusty hinges, and no porter stands at the entrance of that inner room where, on a downy couch made of black ebony and draped with sable curtains, over which black plumes wave, lies Somnus, the god of sleep,—Sleep, the repose of all things, gentlest of the deities from whom all care flies, the peace of mind who can sooth the hearts of men wearied with the toils of the day, and can refit them for labor."43
Near Somnus sits Morpheus, one of his many sons, who watches over his slumbers and sees that no one shall break in upon his sleep. This god holds a vase in one hand, and with the other he shakes the nodding poppies that bring drowsiness and sleep. Sometimes he assumes varied forms in which he appears to men at night, and always he flies through the darkness with wings that make no noise. Around the couch of Somnus hover shadowy forms, the Dreams,44 which are as numerous as the forest leaves or the sands upon the seashore. In a distant corner of the room lurk the horrid Nightmares, which creep out of the cave to visit sleeping mortals, but are never led to earth by Mercury, as are the welcomed Dreams. Two gates lead out of the valley of sleep, one of horn and one of ivory.
150"Of dreams, O stranger, some are meaningless And idle, and can never be fulfilled. Two portals are there for their shadowy shapes, Of ivory one, and one of horn. The dreams That come through the carved ivory deceive With promises that never are made good; But those which pass the doors of polished horn, And are beheld of men, are ever true." —Bryant's Homer's Odyssey, Book XIX, line 679."Sunt geminæ Somni portæ, quarumaltera fertur Cornea, qua veris facilis datur exitus Umbris; Altera candenti perfecta nitens elephanto, Sed falsa ad cælum mittunt insomnia Manes."45 —Virgil, Æneid, Book VI, line 893.
Mors, god of death, occupies one of the rooms in the cave of sleep. He is a fearful-looking deity, cadaverous as a skeleton, and wrapped in a winding sheet. He holds an hourglass in one hand, and a sharp scythe in the other; and stands watching the sand run out of his glass that he may know when a human life is nearing its end. Then, as the last grains fall, he glides from the valley of sleep and stalks silently and unseen upon the earth, where he cuts down the unhappy mortal, who cannot even hear the rustle of his garments as he approaches. It is nothing to him whether the life he takes belongs to151 childhood or youth, for he mows them down as relentlessly as he does tottering old age. And to the rich he is as unsparing as to the poor."Pallida Mors æquo pulsat pede pauperum tabernas regumque turres."46 —Horace, Carminum, Book I, § IV, line 13.
The divinities who dwelt in the Cave of Sleep were distrusted by the ancients, and Mors was held in universal dread. No homage was ever offered to him, and no temples were dedicated in his honor; though sacrifices were sometimes made to ward off his dreaded coming. He was never represented in art except in a pleasing aspect, for although they believed him to have in reality the fearful appearance that tradition ascribed to him, yet the beauty-loving Greeks refused to have this kind of horror embodied in marble. So when Death appears in sculpture, it is usually with his brother Sleep, and both are represented as sleeping youths, whose heads are crowned with poppies or amaranths, and who hold inverted torches in their listless hands.
