Hogtober Day 24 - Patronus

Here’s my last contribution for Hogtober/inktober!

The wolf patronus is Rohan's and the butterfly is Avis' own! I’ve shared a bit about my MCs patronuses in this post here if you’re interested in reading about it! MC Patronus

Just know that the McQuaids all have a wolf for their patronus as that’s part of their family's crest. Rohan has a gray wolf, Coby and Veruca have the Arctic wolf.

“My ancient magic… I guess you can say that I am not very fond of it…”

Combining day one and two for Hogtober since it’s literally just Avis for both days (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵) of course I could have always drawn Tierney for day two, but I don’t have the free time to do every day (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥｀) Plus, I like drawing Avis!

Avis isn’t fond of her ancient magic mostly due to the effects of her spell. Her ancient magic is literally a counter spell. Anyone casting a spell at her with malicious or ill intent will have that spell backfire and affect them instead but the effects is doubled. Avis being a pacifist absolutely despises such a thing. She cannot stand to witness anyone being cruel or in pain so seeing how her magic affects someone is enough to scare the poor girl, even if the person who casted the spell against her was trying to hurt her.

So Avis keeps her ancient magic a secret. Of course her family, Rohan and his friends, are the only ones that know. And Rohan is doing his best to make sure the knowledge of Avis' magic never reaches to anyone who would take advantage of her.

It’s time to share my Hogwarts Legacy MCs Rohan Mac Uáid and Avis Ni Conraoi! I've already shared a bit about Avis, though some of the information has been changed. I'll make a proper introduction post to their characters someday.

Now that I know what time the game takes place in, I can try and work on their family tree and timeline. I would also like to make something on Rohan's circle and Avis' old friend Zelaria Harpee.

The Wolf and The Butterfly

Rohan of the Mac Uáid family, proud of his family name and like the wolf on his coat of arms, he conveys courage and strength and values loyalty and understanding above all else. He cares little for status, whether it be by blood or class, and believes old traditions should be left in the past with the generation that made them.

Avis Ni Conraoi, the only daughter of her family, an advocate for peace and equality. She has an affinity to butterflies, and as her patronus, the butterfly stems from her hopeful soul. The winged insect's "dreamlike" meaning alludes to her tranquil nature.

Despite Rohan and Avis' relationship being arranged since they were young, the two have made their relationship work and eventually fell in love with each other. The arrangement both of their parents made was more of a business tactic rather than something personal. At their first interaction, Avis remained calm and polite while Rohan was more stern and observant. Both were originally doing what they were told as children of nobility, yet both felt stiff and suffocated by the forced interaction. Though with all the time they spent at each family’s estates, Rohan and Avis eventually grew comfortable being around each other.

While Avis was catching up with her studies, oblivious to what was going on outside of Hogwarts, Rohan and his group were dealing with Ranrok and Rockwood’s goons. After finding out that they were after Avis for her ancient magic, Rohan was determined to keep them away from Avis. With Avis being a pacifist, Rohan would rather keep her in the dark regarding the conflict and dangers especially if it now involved her.

Now that Avis spends a lot of time in the Room of Requirement, Rohan spends most of his free time there mostly to just keep her company. And when she takes breaks from her studies, Avis plays her harp as a form of relaxation as well as soothing Rohan from the stress of everything outside of Hogwarts. The two bond over music, Avis being delighted to know that Rohan is fond of musical arts as well, and was eager to play for him whenever he wished.

HPHL - Avis Ni Conraoi

Avis' portrait edit is finally done! This definitely looks so much better than her old version where I overdid it with the airbrush 😩

I know I got Rohan's drawing in the drafts, but since Avis has an image done already I may as well introduce her character! Some of this was just copied from her old bio, which I need to edit for later. Maybe I'll make a portrait edit for Rohan so he can match with Avis.

Avis ni Conraoi (Oct. 14th) is a pureblood Irish witch. She is the only child of Cormac and Aisling. Despite being an only child, she grew up with many cousins, all who dote on her. She's the second youngest amongst her cousins, she was treated as the baby of the family. Avis grew up in Abbeyfeale, Ireland, before moving to Kinsale after her marriage with Rohan.

Gentle and patient, Avis cares for the well-being of her family and friends, always awaiting their return and watching over them. Both Rohan and Zelaria, however, are unable to discern her true thoughts, outside of her familial love towards them.

Avis shares her father's sentiments of avoiding needless conflict and protecting order. In reality, she severely doubts her strengths, fearing conflict and would usually not want to take part in it. Deeply moved by the sorrows she sees around her, she is empathetic to other people's strife and desires to impart hope to them. To ease her stress, Avis may compose melodies or poems. Her art is her alternative means of inspiring courage and peace of mind to herself and others.

Free-spirited and unpredictable, she is noted to act against the norms of her time, choosing to wander off on her own, much to Rohan's chagrin. Her genuine care for her family is coupled with her knowledge and she often acts as a guide for her younger followers, and even her father.

Like Rohan, the delicate and refined Avis does everything she can to declaw the stark class inequality between herself and others. Her words are perfumed with the scent of nobility yet they are kind and candid. Her composure is poised yet her casual gestures are friendly and inviting. She may be modest in receiving praise, yet her maturity and tenacity will shine through to inspire those around her. Avis follows the will of her father to exert herself for her family, enduring any trial that may come their way.

An advocate for peace, Avis believes in equality for creatures and other magical beings. Once when she was younger, she freed all the house elves in her home, emptying out her closet and giving them her clothes. Her family, while surprised by the house elves causing a commotion being freed, couldn't stay mad at Avis as they knew it was only a matter of time till she freed them. Ever since then, the family only hires people to work in their estate.

Given the amount of wisdom she has, Avis is marvelous in Divination. Her skills with fortune telling make people believe she's seer. When in actuality, it's the poetic language and her attentiveness that make her skills in divination remarkable.

As her patronus, Avis is symbolized by a butterfly, which stems from her hopeful soul. The winged insect's "dreamlike" meaning alludes to her tranquil nature.

Butterflies are commonly seen as objects of beauty yet also symbolize death and rebirth in various cultures. A few legends state that a person's remains or soul may be reincarnated as several butterflies after their passing. During Avis' passing, a kaleidoscope of butterflies appeared around her grave.

The type of ancient magic Avis possesses is kept a secret from many outside of the Conraoi family. Avis was born with 'Mystic Eyes' which neutralizes the spells and magic of any wizard or witch that meets her gaze directly, halting whatever magic they are using at the moment. This magic can also be used as a hypnosis technique, where Avis reverses the homicidal intent of anyone who meets the stare of its user directly. In other words; if someone expresses hostility toward her, Avis is able to will those opposing her into harming themselves instead of her. Unlike the predecessor before her in the family, Avis' is not permanently enabled and can be triggered at will. When activated, Avis' corneas and pupils turn a bright blue.

Avis however detests the negative effect her magic possesses, and refuses to hold any ill fiber in her to avoid using it. Besides hypnosis and neutralizing, Avis' ancient magic has another effect. Her special technique is a spell called “Dreaming Reality”, which enables her to create illusions and control the movement of it through her harp. This spell is often used for those on their deathbeds, afraid of dying alone. Avis casts this spell to put them at ease as they give their final breath.

The second Mac Uáid House, commonly referred to as McQuaid, is a household of purebloods originating from Ireland. The household is symbolized by a wolf pack and the family patronus is a wolf that suits each member's character.

》Overview《

The Mac Uáid family was founded by Rohan Mac Uáid. It originally was in the possession of his grandfather, Maol Mac Uáid. After Rohan's marriage with Avis of the Conraoi family, he overthrew the current head of the family and casted out those who shared the same ideology towards muggles and blood purity. The influence of the family continued to grow even after Rohan's death. After his passing, he left his holding to his eldest son Donagh, who, in turn, disposed of those who betrayed the family. Over the years the Mac Uáid family slowly separated themselves from nobility, choosing to live in commonality. 

》Family Structure《

A family clan that originated from the sole Mac Uáid family but has broken apart from them and now acts as a separated household. The household is built up with close family members as well as loyal followers of Rohan. The Bettina, Bernier and Crow families operated as the main form of security to the Mac Uáid household. The Bettina family had casted a numerous amount of protective spells over the family manor. The Crow and Bernier families acted as personal guards to the household.

A plaque of the Mac Uáid coat of arms that had been made during Rohan's time. It is currently held at the Mac Uáid family manor. 

Avis' Harp

A harp that was once in Avis' possessions. She was well known by those around her that she would always be seen playing the harp. The harp holds so much sentimental value that after her passing, the harp has remained within the family as a relic.

Mac Uáid Spell Book

Book of spells written by Miksa that has been held within the Mac Uáid manor for generations. The spells recorded have been created by Rohan to the current generation.

Quidditch Plaques

Given how some members of the family are into quidditch, Elroy especially, there is a wall dedicated to all the quidditch season plaques and trophies he's ever won.

》Magic Abilities《

The Mac Uáid household has always prided themselves in duelling. A duelling competition within the household is held annually at the manor's duelling area. Their expertise focused around wandless magic, and spell creations. Miska, Nevaeh, Kasper, Wilhelmina, Rian and Aisling were excellent spell inventors while Rohan, Donagh, Áine, Crow, Coby, Selma, Veruca and Rain were exceptional in wandless magic.

Some of the members within the household are familiar with the dark arts. The Crow, Ní hlorua, and Serpen families focused on using the dark arts as a learning method for the younger generations in the family to teach them how to properly defend themselves against it.

Majority of the households are excellent flyers. Quidditch has been an interest to many within the family. Elroy is one of the well known players during his time in Hogwarts. Coby, Giles, Charléne, and Valentine were known as the fastest flyers within the family.

》Trivia《

• The family manor has a wall dedicated to crests of families that have joined with the Mac Uáids either through loyalty but mainly through marriage.

• While the Mac Uáids started off as a pure-blood family, it slowly lost its purity as generations passed.

• Every year during family reunions, the Mac Uáid household hosts a little competition for the family. The very first game was hosted by Avis as a way to keep the familial bonds strong. The competition can range from duelling, quidditch or flying races.

• With the addition of the Caplan family, music, dancing and a talent show have been added to the reunions.

• After breaking apart from his old family, Rohan changed the spelling of his surname to the anglicized version of it. His coat of arms, as well as his eldest son, kept the Gaelic spelling for Mac Uáid.

While I try to finish up the lineart for Cardverse!Rakepick I've gotten the inspiration to work on other things but I can't keep doing them all at once. Otherwise I'm just gonna burn myself out quickly. So I'm making use of the polls to decide what to work on next!

Tierney, Giles and Wren are Rohan's friends and Zelaria is Avis friend. I'm kinda excited for Rohan's friends though, especially Giles and Tierney since they have special interactions with Avis x)

Avis can often be found out in nature, composing a new poem or song

Whenever she plays, butterflies appear around her.

Avis loses track of time whenever she has been inspired by some muse that has caught her interest

I was hit with major inspiration for Avis so I dropped everything to draw this!!

I really wanted to take my time with this drawing and put more details into the background. The background was actually my favorite part in this piece. I usually struggle with drawing trees, so I’m extremely happy with how they turned out!

I have finished making Avis' designs!

Because of her personality, being gentle and caring, I figured Lolita fashion would be the perfect style for Avis. I for one love Lolita fashion, but drawing it is a nightmare. I hate drawing frills and lace. Lace especially! That's pure nightmare for me! So I pretty much strayed from the lace here and decided to just keep the frills.

The first attire is Avis' casual attire. It's what she wears outside of classes and Hogwarts. Her other two are the outfits she wears under her school robes.

The middle attire is the uniform Avis wears when she was attending another school before transferring to Hogwarts. If you read about Erehnoll, the magic school in Ireland, that is the school Avis attended before her transfer. It is entirely fanmade, so there wasn't much information on the uniform just the colors for the houses and other stuff for the school.

The third attire should be obvious with the Hufflepuff bow. This outfit is what Avis wears under her Hogwarts robe. I just like how simple this one looks compared to the other two. I think it would have been my favorite, if I wasn't a little biased towards vests.

So anyways that is the entire designs for Avis. I'll be adding this to my Masterlist post. And I'll be working on Avis' bio very soon! I already made it on Amino and linked it to my Masterlist post, but I'll be making one specifically for Tumblr. You can also find Avis' photo edit of her portrait in the masterlist as well!

19, 29 and 31 for Veruca and Avis?

19: What do they think about before falling asleep at night?

Veruca: Oh there are many things that Veruca thinks about at night. The biggest thing that she's always thinking about is her brother. She was confident she would find him, but everyone's comments on it, not to mention the cruel jokes from Merula, she was slowly doubting herself. She doesn't like going to be in a bad mood so she would think back to all the times she had fun with Coby when they were younger. Thoughts back to simpler times where Veruca used to hit Coby with a toy bat, or cling onto his legs whenever he went to hang out with his friends. Any thoughts that had her laughing in them, and when she's finally in a good mood again, she'll fall asleep.

Avis: Before Effie's betrayal if someone were to ask Avis what she thinks of before falling asleep, she would tell them that she doesn't think much except for how the next day will be. She doesn't think about how she will go about the next day, nor does she think about what new things can happen. As a free spirit, she lives with how the wind blows and where life takes her. Everything will fall into line, and she has since then accepted how life will play on. However, after her best friend's betrayal, Avis started thinking more on her old friend's whereabouts and wellbeing. She still holds out hope that she will return and seek help.

29: Reaction to sudden extrapersonal disaster (e.g. The house is on fire! What do they do?)

Veruca: You know that scene from The Office? Yeah she's basically Dwight in this scenario. On a more serious note, she is more shocked by the sudden disaster. She may take a moment to get into action. As soon as she is fully composed again, she'll try to figure out a way to stop the disaster from getting worse. With people around, it's a little harder for her to focus, especially when they are panicking. Veruca would try to keep a level head, but if they refuse to listen to reason, she would have to knock some sense into them to snap them out of their panic.

Avis: Unlike her great granddaughter, Avis reacts rather calmly. She's quick to settle things and if there were other people around, she would do her best to calm everyone down. Panicking won't make things better, so she gets to work stopping the disaster. While doing so, she will calmly talk to the others to help them relax a bit more so no other disasters are made. 

31: Most prized possession?

Veruca: The most prized possession Veruca owns would be the twin bat charms she and Coby wear. Before Coby left to Hogwarts, he got Veruca an early birthday gift since he wouldn't be able to celebrate it while he's away. The bat charms were enchanted to act as a source to know when the other is in danger or hurt. Coby often used his charm to know whenever Veruca was feeling upset and needed him. Coby used to sneak out of Hogwarts to see her until he was caught by Dumbledore. After Coby went missing, Veruca would try to make herself sad, hoping Coby would suddenly appear to comfort her. When it was stolen, along with her quidditch plaque (based on that one bug that removed some items in the dorms), Veruca panicked and nearly tore her dorm and the common room apart. 

Avis: Most people would say the harp is Avis' most prized possession since she is always seen playing it. But actually the butterfly pendant she wears. Avis is symbolized by butterflies, and her patronus is a butterfly. She received the pendant as a gift from her grandfather when she was born, it has never been taken off. Whenever she feels the need to make a silent prayer or calm her nerves before facing situations that scare her, she would grasp her pendant in her hand while doing so.

32: Thoughts on material possessions in general?

Honestly, Avis cares so much about material things whether it's her own possessions or someone else's.The things Avis owns hold so much sentimental value to her, she can't really bring herself to throw them away. With her old friend Effie, the friendship bracelets are something she holds dear to her even after Effie's betrayal of their friendship. "Everything tells a story" her father often says to her, and she now recites these very words when asked about her obsession to keep random trinkets. 

37: Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making?

It's a little bit of both for Avis. She's mostly seen as a free spirit who acts more upon emotion though. However, her uncles are aware of how much wisdom she holds from her father and can understand the reasons behind political and civil decisions. She prefers to be viewed as refined and delicate yet unpredictable, hence her acting against the norms of her time. If she was asked to follow Tierney to look through the dangerous parts of the forest for something, Avis wouldn't think of it and tag along as Tierney needs her help. Avis cares a lot about the people around her, so to help them because of it will always be the decision she makes.

38: What recharges them when they’re feeling drained?

Most of the time, it's playing her harp or reciting poetry. It calms her, inspiring a peace of mind for her. She also feels rejuvenated when she's going on a nature walk. Her home has a magic floating rock waterfall that trails down a river. Walking over the bridge by the river with the waterfall in view helps put her at ease too. Avis will instantly be in a greater mood if she had someone to talk to while on the walk. On days where she is completely drained, and she has no muse for her art, a nice cup of tea to enjoy by the window helps.
