i'm not sure if it was just for the holidays or what, but recently httyd was free to watch on youtube and i wanted it like seven times in the span of a week. it's such a special movie to me and i wanted to quickly give a shout out to... basically the entire film, but also the scene of hiccup realizing he'd lost his leg. the way his expression and body language tells what's going on in his head; his ragged breathing as he processes that he's lost a limb, toothless's clear empathy... all of it.
They knew how to make this scene hit. They knew how to make this scene hit.
I love that this scene - like other critical scenes - knew to pause, let words be few, and have expressions, reactions, and realities speak for themselves. As you said, this is a young boy, eyes wincing in hurt and disbelief, no words to speak, processing his leg's gone forever.
It's a moment to make the audience lose their breath when they realize what happened. How often do we see our heroes in family animated films permanently lose limbs, with the consequences clear, the emotions depicted true?
It's understated in some ways, but that's what makes it real and raw.

what's the last dinner you made that you said "oh fuuuggggg that's good" about and would you be willing to share a recipe. also do you have any OCS with invisible (physical) disabilities like fibro for example im curious because of I'm having a flare up . answer or don't it's ok. I hope you had a good walk around smiiiiiile
literally last dinner like that was Literally Last Night when my wife made me a really fucking good pasta. homemade tomato sauce and fresh basil and spaghetti and was So Yummy Good. i will let her choose if share recipe LOL.
as for OCs with invisible disabilities this is a bit of a cop-out answer but- I don't think I know yet! I haven't intentionally designed any where I said "and this guy has fibro" or something of that ilk, but the funny thing about creating characters is sometimes they'll kinda Reveal something to you that you didn't know before but once they do you're like "oh that make sense yeah that's part of your character now". I do have an older character that eventually developed in such a way to have an old injury that occasionally requires them to use a brace and/or cane due to pain, but I suppose that's a little different than something like fibro, yeah?

Do you think you'll ever do a Another Story video like the White Rabbit for psychonauts one?
OOOOOOOOHHHHHH MAN. I've have quite a few animatic ideas burned into my brain about this for years now. I've actually put a lot of thought into maybe doing one or two of them as a side project to chip away at, and release them after it gets to the point in the plot's release where it isn't spoilers anymore.
Obviously it would take a lot more work because you know. I'd have to make all the visuals for it instead of just assembling them. But MAN would I love to!!!!
Some of the songs that I would love to make them for are "Goodbye Mr. A" by the Hoosiers (this song shaped the whole development of S1 plot), "Artificial Heart" by Jonathan Coulton, "Man-Made Object" by Lemon Demon. All 3 of these are primarily about Umbers, I'm realizing. But that's okay because he's the best character.

Since you've been talking about Riku quite a bit lately I was just wondering - are there any of your mutuals' ocs that you think he would get along well with?
Alright I've been putting this off for like. Two months now because I've been really nervous about it (a good nervous) but fuck it I'm just gonna get this done!!!
OK so the short answer is yes. I'll be 100% honest whenever a mutual posts about their OC I am IMMEDIATELY thinking about how they'd vibe with Riku. I can't help it I think about him 24/7 and to be honest I think it's actually a fun exercise that helps build up characters to imagine how he'd get on with other people.
The longer answer is tough because I don't want to ramble on too long and also I feel. silly. enough so I'm gonna just limit it to a few of my mutuals OCs. Readmore cause this got kinda long but also let me say that you should absolutely check out all the OCs I mentioned because they're so cool and well thought out and just amazing :]
So the first one is Nico (latenitewaffles) OC Katsuro Sanada who has been spinning around in my head ever since Nico introduced him. He's such a cool guy and I get excited whenever Nico posts about him!! Katsuro is an Akishinji kid so obviously with Riku being a Yukamitsu kid, these two would have grown up together. I think they'd balance each other pretty well!! From what I know of Katsuro he's a pretty chilled low energy dude, which honestly Riku needs because that boy is like a comet. Full of energy fr fr. I feel like Riku would have also had a much better time as a kid because he would have had someone very close to his age as a friend. There would be a period of time where the two would be in Kosei together and unfortunately I feel like they wouldn't spend much time together because Riku would have shut himself off from everyone while he was dealing with Hatanaka's bullshit and at the same time Katsuro had all the stuff with Nakada going on too. They'd def make it up to each other afterwards though :] Also Riku 🤝 Katsuro -> having weird ass dreams involving moons and coffins and green skies.
The second one I'm picking I'm cheating a little and picking two of Rui's (wildcard-rumi) OCs Tobei and Aki! If you wanna read more about them I'd highly recommend Rui's fic its so so good. I know there's more OCs in their Persona group but these would be the two I know most about. I think Riku would vibe with them pretty well too!! I know Tobei dislikes being pitied for his illness and I think Riku would kinda get that. He'd have to stop himself from checking in on him every two minutes because he just really cares about his friends but I think Riku would definitely encourage him to try new things, although maybe his high energy might overwhelm Tobei a bit... As for Aki well Riku would honestly vibe with him so much, he'd probably beg Aki to get him to teach him skateboard tricks... only for him to fail spectacularly because he was way too over enthusiastic about it. Also I found it kinda funny there's a place in the fic called Riku Park which is connected to the Labyrinth (which is the Shadow world of Rui's fic) and I think Riku would constantly refer to it as his park and would probably try and convince people he bought it. Just to see the look on their faces 💀
The third one then I'm picking is Asuka Misty (misty-wisp) OC! Another OC I've been rotating in my brain since Misty dropped this fic with her. Initially I think Asuka would be weary of Riku. Cause like Asuka is a very anxious person (for good reason too girl's going through it) and Riku is well. Riku "is anyone gonna rush head first into this dangerous situation" then doesn't wait for an answer Kirijo. However, I think because Asuka is really good at reading people, she'd probably be one of the few people to pick up on the fact that Riku's ego is just a front for how insecure in himself he actually is and eventually I think they'd be good friends :] Also I'm pretty sure Asuka gets on very well with Ann and well Riku gets on extremely well with Ann so the three of them would vibe well with Ann acting as kinda the middle ground between the two.
OK I think that's like. The main ones I can think of where I know enough about the OC to talk about the potential Riku dynamic. A few honorable mentions would be (yusuke-of-valla) Alto's OC Ryuko, both her and Riku are theatre kid nerds and would probably sing + gush about Musicals together, Gabe (elijah-terry) OC Yuuha again they both love dancing so they'd vibe with that and also they have a black mask AU and thats all I can think of for now. I know there's other OCs I'm missing so I'm really sorry about that >.< But this was a really fun ask to think out thank you anon :] and I hope I did all my mutuals' OCs justice....

i feel like swifties are dramatic in general but my god fandom twitter is just so messy. i remember i tried to join bc all my friends moved from tumblr to twitter ~2017 and there were just so many ppl trying to start shit w people in other fandoms… like bragging about awards/streams/etc and in the same beat going “oh yeah at least my fave isn't racist” or something like 💀💀💀
Funnily enough these last few months or so I have been more active on Twitter but idk swiftie twitter is just so…. It’s so BIG! And it just feels so.. different than any other fandoms I’ve been in. The best way I can describe it is when I had a swiftie twt, it was hard to build actual friendships and get to know people bec everyone is just trying to one up each other in the fandom and prove that they’re a better fan and like you said one up other fandoms too and I’m just like -.- let me cry about lyrics and be mentally ill about her without this weird competitive behavior in peace please??? so yeah I ofc still follow swifties but have def moved onto yjtwt/ asoiaftwt and with Yellowjackets twitter I’ve actually made friends I can imagine being friends with forever yk? And then with asoiaf twitter… I mean to me that’s one of my home fandoms just like Taylor is and I’ve made so many dany stan friends and I’ve even reconnected with some old friends who I was close with on here while I was active in the fandom more and it’s just 🥺🥰 ofc there are antis we gotta deal with but that’s a given and inescapable when you stan the main character 😌🤪

Your work is really cool! I love Gene and his adventures, and I am so thankful that you post them. Thanks to you I finally decided to start writing some docs about my oc. She was in my head for so long and I after seeing your comics I decided to write out her story, instead of just daydreaming about doing it. You are a really big inspiration to me and I can't wait to see more of Gene's adventures.
aaaa thanks!! that's so awesome, I'm glad you're getting to write out your character!!! I hope you have a ton of fun with it whether or not you decide to share it!!! 😭😭😭

Hello! I'm curious, what is a good way for a new writer in a fandom to connect with other writers and artists? I feel it will just take time but you all seem very cool and friendly
Hi! Tbh I'm not really sure if I'm the best person to ask. I only had very few writer friends until very recently and i barely talked privately with most of them, but here's what little I know about making writer friends:
Leave comments. If someone leaves a lot of comments on my fics I personally get super curious and check out their profile to see if they write too. I have a couple of writers that I consider ao3 mutuals. We read and comment on each other's fics all the time and it's the best feeling
Send out asks for ask games. When I reblog an ask game/prompts I try to always send an ask to the person I reblogged it from, even if I've never seen their blog before. Sometimes those strangers will jump into my DMs (like the one time when I didn't specify a fandom for a prompt and the writer asked me what I'd like) and the prompts are a great conversation starter
Join discord servers. There are a ton of writer/artist servers where people cheer each other on and create stuff together and just hang out. I personally get overwhelmed by that super quickly in most cases, but if it's too much for you, you can mute some channels and only stay in the ones where you know you're comfortable in
Collabs. I feel like collabing must help. You'd have to talk about what to create together and how to do that and in doing so you can talk about your interests? Sometimes there are events where people collab or you could make a post about an idea you have and ask if someone wants to collab
The most harrowing thing of all: talk to people. I'm surprised every time but it just works. If you see someone's creation, you can hop into their DMs and say that you love it. Sometimes there will just be a polite "thanks" and that's it but sometimes you really vibe and get talking. Or, if you notice someone likes all the things of the same artist you love, you can talk to them about that. Or you could ask someone if it's ok to make fanart of fanfic of their creations and send it to them privately if you don't want to post it
One thing I don't do myself but that's really helpful: have a similar profile pic/url across platforms. It helps people recognize you. Someone on ao3 who might really want to talk to you might not recognize you on tumblr bc your url is so different. It definitely happened to me multiple times that people didn't recognize me

Do you think Hiccup could have physically overpowered Viggo?
I do not! Assuming we're looking at a straightforward physical one-on-one, Viggo would win. At least 9 times out of 10.
While Hiccup has the advantage of:
Blacksmith
Constantly physically active in ways that'd strengthen you
Stronk Proof Via Snotlout Punch
and Viggo has the disadvantage of:
Leader who sends other brawn out
Chess Maces and Talons nerd
we've still seen Viggo in action. Viggo is a man of war. An adult man of war. Viggo is older, bigger, more matured and developed, and by logical accounts stronger than a still-growing beanpole teen (even a very active and honed beanpole).
And I think that's good. While villain variety is good (not all should be Sir Brawny Brawn the Muscle Man), Hiccup is the hiccup, the unlikely pipsqueak who's made it within a war-heavy Viking realm by showing how to be different. Hiccup is active enough to hold his own, utilize his intelligence, and work with dragons to overcome any skirmish. But I like that Hiccup remains the beanpole in this world, highlighting that, no mind he's grown tall and handsome, he's still a unique product like the archipelago's never seen.

Anonymous asked... Your Bruce Banner is BRILLIANT. Click here to send me something!
Tumblr media
Sorry for taking so long to respond to this! I've been going back and forth on what to say, because it was so nice to see this in my inbox, and I wanted to reply properly. I'm not an innately confident writer, and because of the chilly reception that adaptations like this usually get on tumblr, there are often occasions where I wonder if I'm writing Bruce well. Sometimes my assurance disappears. But messages like yours are super encouraging, so thank you.
I've been writing for a long time. I've had one or two things published, but nothing substantial, and certainly not novellas or novels. I remember when I first took a real interest in writing stories, and my characters were absolutely terrible, haha. My first original character was based on a book for young readers about dragons (who could assume human form) and people. In this book, there was a teen girl who had dragon wings. I can't remember the name of the book, but I used like 90% of the character's traits for my first OC, and I didn't really put much thought into it beyond this. Call it a product of me being ten years old, but the OC was goofy and corny, and my writing was beyond dramatic, holy smokes... But at least it formed a great foundation for what not to do, moving forward.
When I was in high school, I took an immediate liking to English class. Digging into media and writing essays was very enjoyable for me! Some of the material felt too simplistic, like a deeper meaning couldn't be derived from it, but I still really loved looking for metaphors and nuance in different texts, and devising different ways to present my findings, and sometimes bullshit them from scratch. I jumped headfirst into AP English soon after that. I particularly remember the assignments for Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", and Swift's "A Modest Proposal", which were pretty strange and surreal texts, but they were fascinating!
(That is the kind of literature I love to encounter. Things that are "out there", that make you think, that have something to say about certain topics, and that leave a lasting impression.)
During this time, I picked up a few other OCs, including some that were inspired by my lucid dreams and the film "Avatar" (2008). I also loved analyzing and discussing films that I'd watched, and I became more and more interested in "character study bait" films, including "Hunger" (2008), "Taxi Driver" (1976), and "American Psycho" (2000). The more focus that a film had on a character, the more I liked exploring it and looking for details. "Breaking Bad" was absolutely captivating to me because of all the colour palette and script choices. And certain characters jumped out at me as well, such as Jesse Pinkman, Wikus Van De Merwe, Tony Stark, and Jake Sulley, who all received varying amounts of attention in fics.
Bruce Banner was another character who really stood out, when I finally decided to give him a chance. My first exposure to him was "The Incredible Hulk" (2008), and even after that single film and its somewhat anemic script, I noticed there was a lot going on with him, and I wanted to explore it. It helped that he was a science fiction character too, because that is my favourite genre, and that I'd always been a sucker for werewolf and monster tropes. I hadn't even gotten into the comics yet or learned about his family life (that happened shortly before I graduated), but I was already so invested in him! And it snowballed from there.
I think it's the combination of my keen interest in Bruce and my love for analysis that has resulted in this portrayal. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I like to think he's still recognizable, and he is very much the same character. He was simply given different options from canon, and he's developed accordingly. But he's never wandered too far from his roots. Everything about this portrayal can be traced back to something I've seen, somewhere, in canon.
I'm also deeply proud of my decision to make this portrayal exceptionally self-aware about the psychology of trauma. I put a very heavy emphasis on how trauma informs someone's decisions throughout their life, which canon has rarely bothered to dissect (the comics on occasion, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe only like, once). I've said it before, but Bruce is often depicted and handwaved as "yet another superhero" and is often dumped into the "superhero genre", which is conflated with formulaic, flashy popcorn flicks. I try to write him deeper than that, and more well-rounded. I've never been a fan of shying away from gritty, dark, or personal shit, because it can often be very revealing and insightful, especially for a character like Bruce. I also feel like this makes him a more accessible character to someone who doesn't necessarily like the MCU or Marvel. If all of the "bam, pow, superheroes and capes and high stakes" stuff takes a break, and the painfully human aspects can shine through more, it humanizes him that much more. I think that's part of the reason the television show and Ruffalo's performance in "The Avengers" was so well-received.
(But this is all just my opinion.)
So thanks again, anonymous! I'm really happy to hear you like the direction I've taken him.
Tumblr media
I have many other messages in my inbox, including some old ask memes. I'm slowly working through them. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

hello! can you explain what is sheraton academy? and is there a specific order to read the stories in?
Hello there! Sheraton Academy was an old, play by post forum RP game, about a bunch of boys at a rich boarding school, and the girls' school nearby. It's defunct now and has been for at least ten years but certain characters just clung on and wouldn't let go. I'd suggest for sure starting with canon short stories, to get a feel for the characters. It's a little out of date, as there has been some new stuff I haven't updated, but I definitely suggest starting with this page. It has most of the short stories and links to the longer ones. There are a handful of AU shorts, too!
Unfortunately I'm not sure if the in-tumblr links work on mobile, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. If you have access to tumblr on a desktop I know it will work there, though. The tag itself also has inspo and facecanons and playlists and stuff, so it's a little cluttered. But if you have an afternoon, check that out too! I'll tag it below so it will be sure to work on both desktop and mobile.
If you would prefer, I have the most important stories collected on Wattpad: Sheraton Academy and All Grown Up
The characters were played by multiple people. The only ones who have tumblrs are @ohsugarfoot, @arishokoth, and @avalonjoan, and none of them really post about these characters anymore. But check out their blogs anyway because they are all rad. :) There were others, too, and I did my best to make a list on the introduction page. Unfortunately I've lost touch with everyone else, but that's why the canon ones will always be free to read: we all made a deal way back when that as long as we didn't kill any characters, or make any money, we could write about them. I like to imagine every now and then the others still write little stories, too.
Most of the longer ones, like Until Our Hearts Go Numb, are AUs that got out of hand! The one exception is The Art of Losing Touch, about my character Cal Owen. That is extended canon that I wanted to explore because I love him so much. :)
The stories I've written come in two waves. The first is the original kids at school and their adventures, and the second is mostly Meara, Josselin, Danny, and their friends all grown up and their adult lives, from university to jobs to kids. I started writing those as I got older because I wanted characters that were dealing with stuff I was dealing with as an adult, but loved the characters so much I couldn't just drop them! I also occasionally write about the adult adventures of Christian and his little group, and some others, but it's mostly Meara and Josselin centric.
You don't need to know anything about the canon to enjoy any of the longer stories! I made sure they can stand alone if needed.
The older stories don't all have content warnings, so if you have questions about any specific one, please ask!
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!! I love the Sheraton kids and am happy to ramble all day, I just don't want you to have to parse through too much text to get the info you're looking for :)
