AX3002 - Promotional Portfolio - Art of The Film Book
I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t have any fun with this what-so-ever. The deadline came at a really stressful time as our final deadline is looming over us and we had to churn out a book that basically coincided with our animation schedule. I don’t think this book was really necessary as we already did a book in first semester and with all the other work I had to do at the time, I had to put off to do this book.
Tumblr media
Here’s the cover using the design I talked about previously in my post about my poster. I really didn’t want to see this design and colour scheme go to waste and thought this would be the perfect place to put it. I also like the blocking out of the text. IT’S HOT.
Tumblr media
Here I wanted to show what the book would be about and what style/design I was going for.
Tumblr media
Rather than plastering my entire script onto a couple of pages and having it look nasty, I went for a more stylised approach. I don’t think someone’s gonna read my entire script, and even if they wanted to, they could just watch my film, none of the words have been changed.
Tumblr media
I don’t really have a lot to say about this double page spread, I just wanted to show it off.
Tumblr media
Probably my favourite pages in the book because these drawings are definitley what took up the most time in my film and I’’m really happy with all of them. I usually hate doing backgrounds (and to be honest I hated doing these) but looking at the finished products all together does put a smile on my face.
Tumblr media
When I made the book I honestly didn’t have a lot of animation done, so what I did was find the most complicated shots I had done so far, onion skinned the entire files and screenshotted them so it shows people how I went about the process and it’s a neat little visual. Also a special thanks page is always a nice touch. Shout out to the homies.

AX3002 Promotional Portfolio: Poster
As part of my promotional project, I had to create a poster for my 3-minute film. I was looking forward to designing the poster as it was a bit of a break from tediously animating complicated shots.
As I had already had pre-made rigs for all my characters, I decided to create my poster in After Effects so that I could pose the characters alongside their assets. This saved me a lot of time as I didn’t have to re-draw everything.
I took huge reference from my college project that was ironically also based around Mother Earth. Below you can see my promotional posters for my college project:

I wanted to try and have a similar concept with my film poster and wanted to make sure that I included all the different ‘sections’ in the composition.
In the end, I was pretty chuffed with how it turned out, you can see what I produced below:
Tumblr media
I originally had a lot more text underneath my name however my tutor suggested that It made the poster look way too busy. I instead decided to replace it with the uclan logo. This made my poster look a lot clearer.
I’m really happy with how it came out and really enjoyed spending time on it, I think I’ve managed to express the concept of my film pretty well!

AX3002 - Promotional Portfolio - Poster
My poster started off as random drawings, not even anything to do with the course, but the more I played around with it, the more I thought this would be a perfect poster for my film.
At the time of drawing this, I started a Twitter account more dedicated to my art, so my personal account could be more about memes and stuff lel (side note: my art Twitter is @dannydrawsstuff if you wanna give it a follow xoxo) and one of the first artists I found on there was someone called deepeearts. This person had such a unique style and I wanted to see what I could do to make my own interpretation of it.
Tumblr media
I did this one just for fun and to see if I would even be able to come close to deepees style (she retweeted it so I must’ve done something right. I had so much fun doing this piece I decided to do my poster in a similar style, but have it tailor towards my usual art style as I usually like to use thick outlines (whereas you can see the picture above doesn’t).
Tumblr media
This was what I came up with and I’m really happy with it. I thought if I stuck with standard colours it’d be a bit boring so I thought I’d change it up a bit and go with a more artsy approach and use colours I don’t normally use.
I showed this to my tutor and he said he liked it, but something didn’t feel right about it. I then showed him a version I did in black and white just for fun and he much preffered that one so I chose to do that instead (luckily this colour scheme didn’t go to waste as I used it for the cover of my art of the film book which I’ll talk about in a later post).
Tumblr media
This is what I presented to my tutor afterwards and he was a lot more with this look, but he thought I should get rid of the uclan logo in the corner as it messes up the composition a bit and also change the text and size of the drawing so it’d be more printer friendly.
Tumblr media
Here’s the final design. This is one part of the module I found a lot more enjoyable than the other things we had to do.

AX3002 - Promotional Portfolio - Proffessional Showreel
Probably the most fun I’ve had with a project on this course. Besides wanting to be an animator, I also wouldn’t mind being an editor one day and this project allowed me to work on my editing skills and learn a couple new techniques in premiere along the way.
I actually finished my showreel a while ago, I just forgot to write about it so here we are. When I started, I was excited to work on it, but I didn’t have a song to use and since we were allowed to use copyrighted music, the possibilities were endless.
My first thought was to use a track used in a trailer for the ps2 game “Ape Escape 2″ it’s a minute long and it seemed like a perfect fit, now all I had to do was find out what the original song was since I couldn’t rip it from the trailer as it’s filled with monkey screeches. I found the proper song, but it wasn’t the same mix used in the trailer, I still tried to use it, but some annoying, hard synths come out of nowhere throughout the song and it just made the song sound ugly. I ditched that idea and continued my quest by doing what I do best, lying on my bed listening to Spotify.
(If you wanna watch the ape escape trailer, here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeaJ2nGk26k)
The songs I ended up with were Feel it still by Portugal the Man, You Spin Me Right Round by Dead Or Alive and Something good 08′ (music video version). I even edited 3 rough showreels to see which had the best feel and the clear winner was something good 08′.

My main goal for this was to show that I’m primarily an animator, but I have other skills as well and I think I’ve demonstrated that well.

AX3002 Promotional Portfolio: Art Of The Film
Another aspect of my promotional portfolio was to complete a book depicting the entire process of my film.
I included things from both pre and post production. The book took a huge portion of time to make which unfortunately gave me less time on the animation end. However, having said that. My book ended turning out really nice in the end and I was happy that I’d spent the extra time making it look good. You can see the full PDF version of my book here: Book

As you can see I spent a bit of extra time working on some page spreads for the introduction of each topic. I found it quite interesting to see how my film had come together. It gave me a lot more confidence in the amount of work I have actually done. I hadn’t realised how much effort had gone into the entire process until I saw it all laid out in front of me.
So, it’s positive overall folk!

AX3002 Promotional Portfolio: Showreel
After initially absolutely dreading doing my showreel, I’ve gotta say I’m super happy with it considering I was starting to get pushed for time.
I was initially worried about not having enough work as I’d only just really started getting into a style that I liked. However, when speaking to my other coursemates, they reassured me that I should put in some of my older work.
Even though I wasn’t so keen on this style of work anymore, It at least would give the opportunity to show that I am open to a variety of skills.
You can view my showreel here:
vimeo
Once again I was pretty blown back about how much work I’d actually produced over the course of 3 years. I was so so worried about only showing recent work as I was never really happy with what I produced in the second year. However, after watching it back I still had huge portions of good work that I was proud of.
So once again, ending on a positive note my dudes.
