Bookworm Season
Tumblr media
reading is a healthy habit everyone should take up, not only does it expand your vocabulary scientists say it strengthens memory, concentration and exercises the brain, it may even help you live longer. although in our youth reading is compulsory, the excitement surrounding it can wear off, especially after your brain develops and learning styles are embedded, making it hard for visual learners to concentrate on a book.
if you are a visual learner, there are ways to combat this whilst still strengthening the connections of your brain; setting a daily task to read for at least 10 minutes, preferably before you sleep, will help with routine alongside mood. likewise, magazines are a great option, as they have both the visual side and minimal text, with a wide range of topics.
futhermore, the magazines i have selected are all environmentally friendly, with eco-friendly packaging, as for the books, many can be bought second hand via Amazon or Ebay.
and so with that being said here are some of my favourite magazines and book recommendations:
Magazines
Riposte Magazine - a magazine catered towards women, Riposte is environmentally friendly, empowering and opens spaces for women to talk on a number of interesting topics. it is be available online or physical copies, as featured on Mottainai Marketplace.
More or Less - this magazine focusses on sustainability, ethics, overconsumption and purchasing habits. the content is fashion based and green creatives.
Paper Magazine -produced quarterly this magazine focusses on fashion, pop culture, music, art, nightlife and film, often featuring big name celebrities like Kim Kardashian.
Pop Magazine - shifting onto an online only presence Pop Magazine has partnered with The Barn utilising social media, working with commercial partners such as Guess Jeans A$ap Rocky x Naomi Campbell.
Sporty and Rich - Emily Oberg’s brand continues to grow with her magazine ventures, all about culture, streetwear, vintage clothing, this magazine is catered towards all genders.
Rubbish Famzine - a family run hand-made business highlights the magic of publishing, whilst involving captivating storytelling.
Sofa Magazine - catered towards Gen Z Sofa acclaims itself as “It’s illuminating, it’s different, it’s sassy”, this claim is backed up by the unusual appointment of their 16 year old guest editor Andy Coronado. the illustrations compile a nostalgic yet fresh aesthetic whilst the content highlights the future generations.
Printed Pages - featuring engaging articles from creatives all over the world, including photographers, illustrators and more.
Books
Aya Takano - the Japanese Superflat artist Takano has a number of texts featuring her iconic illustrations, alongside science fiction text.
Grayson Perry - the renowned artist has a number of books centering around identity, his artwork and life.
Hush, Kate Maxwell - Maxwell’s debut has been quoted as “hugely impressive”, Hush is a powerful novel about the feminine identity and motherhood.
The 100 Year Old Man who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared, Jonas Jonasson - a compelling story following 100 year old’s Allan Karlsson detailed life and the adventures he managed to get wound up in throughout.
How to Kill your Family, Bella Mackie - Mackie’s debut novel is an intriguing story about female protagonist who is hell-bent on revenge, this darkly humorous story is begging you to not put it down.
The Appeal, Janice Hallett - following a murder in a small town, with fifteen suspects, Hallett’s format is interesting as it largely takes place through emails between two trainee detectives, the novel has interesting twisting turns throughout.
A Narrow Door, Joanne Harris - a story told by two peoples accounts on a newly appointed headmistress, exploring her past and how she got to the role in an extremely sexist exclusive grammar school, with a few scandals chucked in as well.
Do/Design, Why Beauty is Key to Everything, Alan Moore - Moore’s short book invites the reader to reevaluate what we produce and why, from motorcycles to technology Moore encourages us to slow down and take in the natural landscape.
How to be Calm, Anna Barnes - an interactive novel giving methods on how to combat anxiety, relax the mind and body, as well as practising wellness habits.
Free, Lea Ypi - a memoir surrounding the last days of communism in Albania, focussing on humanity, and the wonders of childhood.
Yoga, Erich Schiffmann - a guided book on the principles of yoga, how it affects the body and helps look into our inner selves.
The Day Before Yesterday, Colin Tudge - exploring evolution, modern genetics and heredity this novel is laced with facts, told in a compelling way explaining the importance of animals and nature.
First Person Singular, Haruki Murakami - Murakami explores the wonders of the world through his eyes through eight short stories, encompassing his love for baseball, jazz and finding his voice.
