Blue Period Review!
Anime review time today! If you've ever dreamed of becoming an artist, I have an anime that's just for you: Blue Period.
Tumblr media
To start off, Blue Period is a Netflix exclusive that was adapted from a manga in 2021. It is twelve episodes long, and as suggested in the intro, it deals with an interesting topic: the fine arts.
I didn't know what to expect from an anime about painting, and the arts in general. I can't draw to save my life, so I wasn't sure if this would echo with me, but whether that's the case or not, I really enjoyed it! The plot is simple, but sometimes the simplest things work best, don't they? It has a few great plot twists, and honestly, for an anime so short, I'm impressed by how good the pacing is.
Undoubtedly, this anime's greatest strength is its characters. There are relatively few important characters, but they're all pretty solid, and especially the protagonist. It's nice to see him grow, and I think he can be an inspiration for many aspiring artists. Special mention of another important character whose development is done very well and who has a great plot twist revolving around them.
I have to say, I liked the music. It's pretty discrete, but it works pretty well. Ironically, this anime's main flaw is the art, haha. The backgrounds and animation are just fine, but OMG, the characters are ugly. Their designs aren't to blame, but the way they're drawn doesn't sit right with me. I blame Netflix, since it's not the first ONA that has this issue. It's not bad enough that it ruins the enjoyment, though.
Overall, this anime is definitely worth watching. It's beautiful, in a way, and I think it deserves more recognition.
Down below is the tierlist for the characters! Thank you for reading this review!

appreciation post (2) : birth of a passion (spoilers to Blue Period manga and anime)
"Truth is, you should be free to do as you like because when it comes down to it, your life is you own" ~Blue Period by Tsubasa Yamaguchi
They say that there is never too late to find something you'll be devoted to. Maybe not for your whole life, but as long as you love something, there is a strength to do so.
Tumblr media
Blue Period reveals to the reader such an issue, and it is not the only one. The human struggles that the author shows us cannot be put only in one category, and the whole plot is simple but complex at the same time. Long story short - hard to put into words, easy to understand and feel. I think anyone can find themselves in the writing of characters around whom events take place and on whose shoulders maintains the quality of the story.
WARNING: Blue Period hits different when you are/were an artist or a burned out gifted kid. Spoilers ahead. TW: abuse, suicide
YATORA YAGUCHI how hard work outshines talent
Tumblr media
I've never felt a deeper connection with a character than with Yaguchi. His whole story is inspiring, yet in every way to success - there is hard work. The growth of this man is incredible.
At the beginning of the story he was ignorant towards artists and their works, thinking that talent is doing all the work. Not practice, not years put into mastering tools and techniques - just pure talent. Just like most of the people that haven't created anything professionally or with passion.
You can be one of the best students in your own year, yet still be overlooked with one phrase: you're smart.
You can be one of the best skilled artist and still be called only talented.
When the realization hits right, there's no going back.
In my eyes, he is a representation of a person without a clear goal. Meeting the expectations of his parents and choosing a stable course in school, telling others what they want to hear. Becoming one of the best students of the year on exams. And then boom, everything changes.
For his sake, he was made aware: "you have talent" is not an appropriate compliment for an artist. Not every good intention is formed into the right words.
He lives day by day trying his best, not even knowing why.
Until he sees that painting.
What makes me sad about Blue Period is that our main character is developing almost only with the help of the others. I understand that the influence of others is powerful, but on the other hand, Yaguchi is not dumb. He could figure out on his own that he needs to study all these artsy things, just like he studied on exams. Yet, I'm not mad. I like seeing the good development, even if it's not thanks to the characters themselves. Yaguchi makes up for his shortcomings with hard work, learning various techniques over time. But is it enough to create well?
No, it isn't. But what makes his art progressing?
He's not giving up on learning how to get better. His hunger to create more and more is making him a promising artist. I can't wait to read more (I'm on volume 10)
Of course, its not an easy road, love for art isn't always natural, but love is a twisted and makes it's own rules.
RYUUJI AYUKAWA what love makes us do
Tumblr media
I think Yuka is the most tragic character in the whole series. I really like them, even if I'm not feeling such a connection with them as much as with Yaguchi. They're truly a good representation of ,,different" people's struggles on a daily basis, that's for sure.
What's more to this character? Yuka doesn't have a good relationship with parents, they can only feel safe with their grandmother, who taught them how to do nihonga. Yuka loves their grandmother and goes for a course of this type of art just because ,,my grandma likes nihonga". They struggle with their family.
They drown themselves with their love for a person that cares for them the most and search for an acceptance.
They struggle with their sexuality and gender identity. They cannot accept the world in which people like them cannot live normally, like others do. Maybe if more people talked about this problem, the world would be completely different.
But no, the world is cruel, and Yuka knows it very well.
They're the one who invited Yatora to the art club which was surprising to me, yet with the time you understand that it was to show our main character the way to express himself. After all, Yuka was the one that complimented our hero's first painting. Even if this was not intentional, they made a huge impact on our main hero and vice versa.
I'm not even going to talk about the part when these two went on vacation. The quote from this time is truly heartbreaking but true, to anyone who struggles with their mental health.
,,If you're still bothered by what other people will think of you, then you can't die just yet".
Means: if you care about others, you care about yourself. At least that's what I understand.
But you can't fool gods. They know everything
right?

Yotasuke Takahashi god in someone's eyes
Tumblr media
Even if I'm considering Yatora a very likable character and a great mc in general, I adore Yotasuke with all my heart.
Unapproachable personality, sharp tongue, no beating around the bush. It's a great mix for a character that is going to be hated. The philosophy of ,,I don't need anyone" - that's Yotasuke Takahashi for you
Or is it?
I think he's the most complex character in Blue Period and even so he's very relatable. It might still be a problem to understand his character without reading the manga (i'm looking at volume 10 here). It's really hard for me to put into words and I'm not sure if I understood it correctly, but he found comfort in animals.
You can talk to them, they won't understand you. You will care about them and they will show you gratitude. He isn't seen as a human by most of the people around him, more like some kind of art god.
He's overlooked by others, they only see his abilities, talent and works. Most of us would probably be irritated about the fact like that. Just like
you're not a person just because you're not like the others around you.
With time I learned not to pity people like this, not to worship them. They're human, they make mistakes, they have emotions and their reactions. They're not here to be an object of fascination, no.
he is a human, they're only people.
THE FINAL QUESTION
So
what is a talent?
Tumblr media
but the more important question is
does it even exist?

10 characters
tagged by @talays-portkey ❤ I chose 10 characters from 10 different things that I consumed this year and liked.  I’m gonna say a few things about each and try to keep it short.
tagging @intyalote, @the-cloud-whisperer, @not-saying-revolution-but, @cortue, @isabellaofparma, @sassyassassy. Have fun, there’s no rules!
continues under the cut:
Sean /Not Me: The Series (2021)
Tumblr media
Not Me, as a whole, breaks me in the best ways possible. And Sean - he’s just everything to me. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful character arcs you can give me is having a character find a few more reasons to live. Make them start cherishing their life as a thing that should be protected and you have me on the floor sobbing. And Sean is this to me - comfort and pain wrapped in one person.
Jim Jimenez /Our Flag Means Death (2022)
Tumblr media
Do you know how hard it is to choose only one character from this damn show? I love them all so much, with my entire heart. But Jim is my special kid okay. It truly hits diffently, seeing them having their own arc in this silly little show, being just as silly with their crewmates, but also being badass and cool off the side and also having such a precious friends to lovers romance alongside everything. My beloved.
Ayukawa Ryuuji “Yuka”/ Blue Period (2021)
Tumblr media
This anime wrecked me, everything about Yuka wrecked me. Their story made me cry for two hours straight and unlocked something in my brain. I don’t know how to explain.
Shen Yi /Under The Skin (2022)
Tumblr media
With everything happening this year, I almost forgot I watched this show, but everytime I remember it, I’m so incredibly fond. It’s rare to watch a crime show that feels comforting, but this one does it! And I attribute a lot of it to this lovely protagonist, because he is so warm, sensitive and charismatic. I loved watching Shen Yi and going through all these cases from his point of view. He just feels like such a comforting presence and honestly, more protagonists should have this characteristic. Let them be gentle!!
Guillermo de la Cruz/ What We Do in the Shadows (2019-?)
Tumblr media
As someone on this hellsite put it - he’s the most character ever. Last week I finally caught up with the new season and I’m all here for Guillermo’s emancipation arc! Fuck it up son!!!! I’m cheering you on, keep doing your hot girl shit!
Vegas Theerapanyakul & Pete / Kinnporsche: La Forte (2022)
Tumblr media
Yes I’m cheating again but what are you gonna do about it. I couldn’t choose between these two because I find them both equally as engaging and interesting. If you’ve been following me - you know. You know the insanity I feel for these two. Who would’ve thought comfort is stored in the toxic BDSM couple. Emotional support fucked up men. Truly on the top of the list for this year.
Striga /Castlevania (2017-2021)
Tumblr media
Listen it doesn’t need much - give me a queer muscly lady with a huge sword and the coolest action sequence of the series and you have me sold. My actual favourite is Alucard, but I feel like we, as a society, should appreciate love and go crazy over Striga a bit more. Like, she’s right there!!
Lucifer Morningstar /The Sandman (2022)
Tumblr media
I just think they’re neat. Once again a show full of wonderful, beautiful characters, but Lucifer simply lives in my mind rentfree. @ netflix I beg, please renew this show so we can get the sequel with Lucifer going apeshit. I’m on my knees.
Wen Ning / The Untamed (2019)
Tumblr media
Sooooooooo I’ve been rewatching this curse of a show for the past week while lying sick in bed with covid and. AND. After three years the pain truly does not get better. Once again, I did not know who to choose for this - every single character in this god forsaken show deserves their own spot. But I somehow ended up on my darling, my boy, my favourite Ghost General. His story arc fucks me up so badly every time and yet it is one of the most beautifully tragic things. He’s a red thread, pulled through the entire story, and it makes my heart bleed. (and yes @the-cloud-whisperer, I’m gonna come back to you soon and finally scream with you properly)
👑 Louis de Pointe du Lac / Interview With the Vampire (2022-?)
Tumblr media
2022 has not ended yet but I know this guy takes the crown. I’ve been a fan of the Vampire Chronicles since I was 15 and finally. FINALLY. I get what I fucking deserve. And FINALLY here is a Louis that I adore - one that is charismatic, one that feels raw and real, and one I can finally love and be invested in. This show truly made me fall in love with his character when before that, he always paled in my affection to Lestat. He always kinda bored me in the books and the movie adaptation. As my friend put it: we all want to be Lestat but actually we are all Louis. But here is he at last, my highest quality blorbo: Louis de Pointe du Lac, resident disaster man full of existential despair, wrath and love. This show is all I’ve been thinking about and I will not apologise.
